Fla GOP disses Fla GOP donor

That seems to be the implication in the latest email salvo the Republican Party of Florida fired off noting Charlie Crist's former political sugar daddy Scott Rothstein, who is now serving a 50-year-federal prison sentence for running a $1.4-billion Ponzi scheme. Rothstein yesterday testified that "For certain contributions, people were appointed (by Crist) to the bench."

The subject line on today's Florida GOP release:  "Is John Morgan the new Scott Rothstein?"

Morgan is Crist's boss and a key political supporter, whose interest in judicial appointments is pretty obvious. But likening him to Rothstein is pretty much like calling Morgan a potential crook.

So it's worth noting that the Florida GOP has received at least $195,000 in campaign donations from Morgan's law firm, and Scott's Let's Get to Work committee accepted a $10,000 check in 2012

Pig-roast party thrown by suspended Miami Lakes mayor results in fine for property owner

@joeflech

There ain’t no party like a Michael Pizzi party — even if it costs the landowner a $250 fine for holding it without a permit.

The embattled suspended mayor of Miami Lakes who’s out on bond and awaiting a federal trial for bribery charges decided he’d host about 300 people at a barbecue Feb. 1 to commemorate the opening of NW 87th Avenue between 154th and 162nd Streets and celebrate his accomplishments as mayor.

The pachanga was held near the new road on land owned by the Dunn family, prominent developers in Miami-Dade County.

But nobody pulled a permit for a special event, and the Dunns got a $250 citation on Feb. 3.

The day of the party, Pizzi told TV reporters he wasn’t going to let the charges keep him from roasting some lechón in a caja china with his neighbors.

It was not a town-sponsored event, despite a thank-you email sent out by Pizzi to attendees that identified the sender as the town’s elected officials and staff.

He later corrected himself in a follow-up email.

Convicted Ponzi schemer Rothstein snags Crist with charge of 'quid pro quo'

Convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein made his first appearance in court yesterday and he unloaded on just about everyone — from Florida’s former governor to judges, bankers, police officers and gangsters.

Story here from Julie K. Brown. Excerpted here:

He detailed how he got around federal campaign finance laws, enlisting members of the firm to contribute hundreds of thousands of dollars to politicians, including former Gov. Charlie Crist. He claimed Crist appointed him to the Judicial Nominating Committee as part of a “quid pro quo” for helping to bankroll his campaign. Crist has said he returned Rothstein’s money after learning it was dirty.
