Senate approves in-state tuition for undocumented students

Ending a fight that lasted more than a decade, the Florida Senate voted Thursday to let undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at public colleges and universities.

The 26-13 vote came as no surprise. The sponsor, Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, had been confident he had the votes all along.

But that didn’t stop him from getting emotional in debate. "The eyes of America are on us," Latvala said. "I think we’re setting an example. I think we’re doing the right thing."

Because the Senate tweaked the bill slightly, it must return to the House for final passage. But both House Speaker Will Weatherford and Gov. Rick Scott said the new language wouldn’t hurt the controversial bill’s chances of becoming law.

"I look forward to signing this bill," Scott said. "This is a historic day. Just think, children that grew up in our state will now get the same tuition as their peers."

That action would make Florida the 21st state to offer in-state tuition rates to undocumented students.

This is another outrage - an affront to those who are here legally, will not get into a school because someone here undocumented? it's illegally - will get the spot - even though they will have to figure out how to pay full boat. And surprise people, it is not easy for the rest of us to pay full college tuition fees. What's next? The entrance criteria gets lowered so they can get in too? What happened to following the laws of this country versus worrying about votes. Discrimination at it's best.

The citizens are infuriated that their political leaders would provide benefits to law breakers that are meant for upstanding citizens.

TERESA

WHAT PART OF ILLEGAL DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND...THIS IS WRONG....WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO VOTE ON THIS..SCOTT I WILL NOT VOTE FOR YOU AGAIN, YOU ARE WRONG...they are ILLEGAL THEY SHOULD HAVE NO RIGHTS IN AMERICA

Dave

Sickening - Another reward for illegal aliens breaking the law. "Undocumented"???? Did they enter the US legally and just misplace their "documents," or forget to get the "documents" while they were cutting the US border fence in the middle of the night?
The children of illegal aliens should not benefit from their illegal actions or the illegal actions of their law-breaking parent/s.
If I break into a home (like illegals break into our country), and take many things of value, can I give the valuables to my children and have them benefit from my crime? Sickening.
The senators and governor should be ashamed of themselves. What do they tell their children? There are rewards for criminal behavior.
Gee, I hope I did not offend any illegals. Now that's a crime.

TERESA

WHO ARE THE 26 THAT VOTED FOR THIS...VOTE THEM OUT..NEED NAMES.....TO EMAIL THEM

There are no "eyes of America on us" for giving away citizen's money to illegal immigrants. Well, maybe a lot of us are watching this nonsense, but not in a way you would like.

Manitoured

He's right, "we are setting an example" for illegals to obtain all the rights that American citizens have. So if an American citizen wants to go to an out of state college, they have to pay higher cost for their education but an illegal does not. Seems fair to me NOT!!! We will just encourage more and more illegals to obtain all the freebies they want while the rest of us will pay the price. What happens when the the working people decide to cash in on the freebie too and decide to give up trying to do the "right" thing and play by all the "right" rules. Who will be paying then?

Bobby Johnson

This is unacceptable for the GOP to be enabling illegal aliens by granting them special status and give them lower tuition than legal USA citizens from other states. The GOP has lost all its principles. I'll not be voting for any of these people that voted for this legislation.

nope

lol these comments are pretty freaking clear. nobody in their right mind thinks its a good idea give benefits to illegals. why do our elected officials have such a hard time representing our interests over the interests of aliens from other countries? i guess this is the price you pay when your representatives allow china with its low wages to dominate the world economy with stupid trade deals.

Vitto Bartolo

Better to have them educated than not!! It's the right move for our country . I'm against illegal immigration, however they are here might as well get educated at their expense than they being a burden in the future to our nation.

Tom J.

When election time comes around, vote for the Democrat opposing these Republicans. If we're going to get policies we expect from Democrats, then vote these jerks out. I'll be darned if I'll give them my vote. Let them find a new job. Let these new illegal college students vote for them.

Jennifer L

Vitto: What a humane thought. However, they have dirty hands by crossing our borders illegally. Many have had free births, free welfare and food, free to even march and say they have rights and tell us - the tax payer to look the other way.

I say no to this bill. Also, all of them that apply and are granted must do a 1,000.00 hours of DOCUMENTED COMMUNITY SERVICE. Let's see if they want to pay us back some of what they have stolen.

As an Independent I will be voting against all republicans this November. That will be the 1st time in all my years voting. If you love the Illegals more than you do the legal citizens you need to be booted out of office.

Sasha

You people are all ignorant. This strictly grants only DACA students to receive in state tuition and maybe if you read up on their status then you would know that they had to enter the country on a legal passport and visa in order to obtain such status so they are not completely illegal. Read up on your stuff before you accuse poor children of wanting to get better education.
