Oscar-winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack will train his cameras on Florida for a third time (after Absence of Malice, which was shot in the Herald's newsroom, and Random Hearts) with Recount, an HBO drama set during the weeks following the 2000 presidential election, when the term "hanging chad" became a household term.
Colin Callender, president of HBO Films, told the Hollywood Reporter the movie will not have a political agenda. "It's a fascinating look at democracy where the rubber meets the road -- a look at the election process like we have never seen it before," Callender said. But where's the fun in that?
Recount will also mark the first produced script by actor Danny Strong, previously best known (at least to me) as one of the evil uber-geeks on TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
