Woody Allen talks about that kiss in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"

I spoke today with Woody Allen via telephone about his terrific Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which opens August 15. The film includes a sexy scene between co-stars Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz that created a bit of a stir when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Here's what Woody had to say about the scene: "To me it's just a kiss. It's not like they kissed and then they fell down on the ground and were passionately in love with each other. When you're shooting a film and there's 20 people on the set, and then the actresses come on and do their scene, someone yells "Lunch!" and they you're off to get your chicken salad. It's not all that exciting. But I understand the curiosity. To see two women who are so ravishing fall in love with each other - however briefly - and kiss is a beautiful thing."

Nice to see you posting again, Rene.

GOD, I can only imagine what it must be like speaking to Woody Allen. I'd turn into a mumbling, fawning mess. Was this your first time talking to him?

And the movie is "terrific", huh? Great news. Where would you place it in the Allen canon?

Rene Rodriguez

I had spoken to him several times in the past, in person, and he seemed to remember me when we talked today. He always has a little trouble understanding me, even though most people say I don't have much of an accent. So I enunciated extra carefully today.

I enjoyed VCB a lot, although Woody's canon is too big now to rank. It's not as good as "Match Point," which was the last of his movies I really liked. But his writing feels fresh and timely in this one, and the acting is terrific. Penelope kills.

This does look like the sexiest movie EVER.

"Scoop", a 2006 film, starred Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson. "The Prestige", another 2006 film, starred the same two actors. Now "Vicky" stars Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall, who played the wife of Christian Bale's character in "The Prestige".

So will Woody have David Bowie and Scarlett Johansson star in his next film about a musician?

The new trailer for The Brothers Bloom looks like Wes Anderson's version of Ocean's 11 (meaning it will need to be seen on a big screen and with more than two eyes). Plus it has Rachel Weisz!

Woody's been paging through his old Penthouse magazines again, I see.
