Will Smith on why he loves Miami
I didn't have a place for it in my interview with Will Smith that ran in the Weekend section, but here's the actor talking about why he loves our city so much.
"I have a lot of strange theories, and this is one of them: I believe cities have emotional patterns, in the same way human beings have emotional patterns. There’s a specific place on earth for every single person where you’re going to feel happier, healthier, more in love, need less rest, and your skin is going to look better. You just have to find the city that matches your particular emotional pattern.
"For my son Jaden, it’s Vancouver. There is something about that city that makes him so happy and upbeat. [His wife] Jada is a mountain girl. She needs Connecticut in the winter. She’s happiest when we’re snowed in in Utah or someplace. For me, it’s Miami. Everything I do, I’m better at it here."
It's too bad Smith didn't shoot Seven Pounds here, since if you buy his theory, the movie might have turned out better. My review was far from the only negative critique the film received, but none was more scathing than A.O. Scott's pan in the New York Times, which contained this particularly vicious nugget:
"Frankly, though, I don’t see how any review could really spoil what may be among the most transcendently, eye-poppingly, call-your-friend-ranting-in-the-middle-of-the-night-just-to-go-over-it-one-more-time crazily awful motion pictures ever made. I would tell you to go out and see it for yourself, but you might take that as a recommendation rather than a plea for corroboration. Did I really see what I thought I saw?"
Ouch.
