"Preacher" movie gets a little closer

N11086 Watchmen's disappointing performance at the box office has not derailed the planned film adaptation of the blasphemous edgy comic book series Preacher.  Filmmaker Sam Mendes, who is expected to direct the movie, says screenwriter John August is "about halfway through" condensing Preacher's 66 issues into a screenplay.

"There's a long way to go yet, but I'm very, very hopeful," Mendes said. "I think it could be amazing."

I'm scheduled to chat with Mendes later this week about his new film, the funny and moving Away We Go, which I saw this morning (and, intentionally or not, plays like an optimistic counterpoint to the dour and gloomy Revolutionary Road). I'm going to try to sneak in a few Preacher questions before he hangs up.
