Fodor's weighs in on where to go in 2012

With 2012 still young, this is the time of year when travel experts recommend and predict travel hotspots. Fodor's Travel, creator of travel guides, has announced its top 21 places to go in 2012 -- some because of big events, some for their value, and some because they are, well, hotspots.

Four highly-anticipated events merit a trip in 2012: The Summer Olympics in London July 27 – August 12; Floriade, the once-a-decade World Horticultural Expo in Venlo, The Netherlands April 5 – October 7; The Northern Lights, with the best viewing locations in Denmark, Norway and Sweden; and the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic’s Sinking, the new Titanic Belfast Museum opening in May.

Fodor's says these are emerging hotspots: Istria, Croatia; Cuba; Panama; Rwanda, South Korea, Colombia and Wales, UK.

Value destinations are Charlevoix in Canada;  Budapest; Portugal; and Matera, Italy.

And finally, Fodor's identifies these destinations as buzzy sights: Cusco, Peru; Oahu, Hawaii; Scrub Island, BVI; Paris, France; Charleston, North Carolina; and Milan, Italy.
