Loggerhead turtle who swallowed fishing hook is returned to the ocean

20120315_turtle release smallSeaWorld returned a 100-pound loggerhead turtle to the ocean just south of Cocoa Beach on Thursday, weeks after the theme park’s veterinarians removed a 4-inch fishing hook from the turtle’s throat and nursed it back to health.

The turtle, not quite an adult, was rescued from the intake canal at the St. Lucie Power Plant in St. Lucie County. The hook the loggerhead had swallowed was one of the largest the SeaWorld team has ever removed from a turtle. SeaWorld Orlando has rescued nine sea turtles so far this year.
