Searching for 'Hunger Games' scenes in North Carolina

One of my favorite road trips is into western North Carolina in the fall, where I go on not-too-strenuous hikes with friends. As often as not, we hike somewhere that we can admire waterfalls. Today I was looking through photos of scenes where The Hunger Games was filmed – all of them in North Carolina -- and up popped Triple Falls, outside Asheville, where we took our first hike together. In the movie, Peeta hides in the leaves and brush near the bottom of the falls.

It turns out that even before the film has opened, fans have been trickling into North Carolina, looking for spots where scenes from the movie were shot, and some tours have been organized. With the movie opening this weekend, state tourism officials are expecting a flood of tourist-fans.

It’s not that North Carolina has turned into a movie-making Mecca. But some good movies – and gorgeous scenery – have been shot there, including Dirty Dancing and my favorite baseball movie, Bull Durham. Last fall, I went horseback riding on the Biltmore estate where scenes from The Last of the Mohicans were shot.
