How well do U.S. airlines treat their passengers?

AirTran provided the best service to its customers last year, according to a report that ranked the 15 largest U.S. airlines on the basis of lost baggage, delayed flights, bumpings from overbooked planes and consumer complaints to the government

American Eagle had the worst record, according to the report.

Southwest, which has acquired AirTran, ranked seventh, so it will be interesting to see how Southwest does after it has finished absorbing the other airline.

The report does not consider such often-subjective factors as the rudeness of airline employees, the quality of food and drink on board, or the comfort of coach-class seating. Read the Associated Press report here.

For a different take on the same report, check out this ranking by U.S. News and World Report, which published its list of the “meanest airlines,” with American Eagle at the head of the pack.
