Live photos of Yosemite

Yosfalls
One of the most beautiful places in the world is Yosemite Valley, with its spectacular waterfalls, sheer rock walls, granite domes and spires, the tumbling Merced River, alpine meadows.... I could just go on and on. Truly, the national park in the center of California takes my breath away.

Now the Yosemite Conservancy has given me and millions of others a gift: a webcam focused on Yosemite Falls -- the photo above is from the webcam. The Conservancy already had cameras focused on El Capitan and Half Dome. You'll find the webcams here and a story with details for photo nerds (like me) here. A couple of caveats: The camera takes still photos that are refreshed every 30 seconds, not live action. You won't see water tumbling. And I'm not sure if they work at night. I looked at all the webcams last night and saw only pitch black. Maybe the moon wasn't out. Even so, just a snapshot of that beauty brightens a bad day. Hmmm, I think I'd better grab a quick look now.

Road trip attractions: Wildflowers are in bloom

When I was a kid growing up in Los Angeles, my dad used to take me and my siblings out to Lancaster and the Antelope Valley to see wildflowers in the spring. Fields and hillsides glowing with California golden poppies were quite a sight. Spring is peak viewing time for wildflowers across the county and in parts of the world. Check out the story here; maybe you’ll find a spot for a quick road trip.
