Washington Monument may remain closed until 2014

Repairs to the Washington Monument, closed to the public since it was damaged last year by an earthquake, will be more complicated and take longer than the National Park Service initially projected.

A massive scaffolding will be needed to give crews access to the most heavily damaged sections of the monument, which are between elevations 475 feet and 530 feet, the National Park Service said Monday. The work, originally estimated to take 10 to 12 months after a bid is awarded in August or September, is now projected to take 12 to 18 months. Read the full story here.
