This Miami HEAT have been very Jekyll & Hyde this season. They've struggled against cellar dwellers and have been competitive or beaten some of the better teams in the league. I've watched this team & think to myself that if the stars all align, they could be a 2nd round playoff team. I still like their chances against Atlanta in spite of losing a 7th game last season. Charles Barkley (who I happen to love) thinks otherwise.
"The Miami Heat are not a very good team," Barkley said on TNT. "Dwyane Wade is probably under pressure than any player in the league." His colleague Kenny Smith his colleague on TNT feels similarly. He said something to the effect that they were a one & done team. They had 2 of the 3 components necessary to win in the NBA, coaching and chemistry, but didn't have enough talent.
Now, it's hard to argue that this team is overly talented. But, I wonder if we're selling them short? For whatever reason, they seem to get up for the good teams. Let's take a look at their roster, and what I think is one of their biggest areas of concern.
Point Guard: Mario Chalmers is a guy who took the starting job last season as a rookie. The Heat were adamant about making sure everyone knew he was the starter this off season. Which, is why the likes of Allen Iverson & Jamal Tinsley were not pursued (well, that and a few other things). I've always said his ceiling is Derek Fisher and you should be happy if that's what he turns out to be. I mean you wouldn't take a guy who defends & hits big shots? Though he doesn't seem to be that guy yet. His shot is a bit inconsistent and his defense is suspect. Now, I know there are some of you yelling at your computer screen right now. "Suspect defense? Are you nuts? How many steals does this guy get?" And, that would be a legit point, but let's just say, as great as Mario plays the lanes is conversely as bad as he plays on the ball defense.
Where does Chalmers rank among point guards in the league? Let's take a look shall we? As I look at the teams in the league he ranks as the 27th best starting point guard. Currently, I'd only take him over Minnesota's Jonny Flynn, Golden St. Stephen Curry, and Indiana's TJ Ford. I could make the case that the first two have higher ceilings. There are even some backups I'd take over him. Those players would be Jarret Jack, Kyle Lowery and maybe Luke Ridnour. That's not including a few young guys who don't get enough minutes, but if you check out their per 36-minute numbers, they could be better like Ty Lawson and Eric Maynor. Point is unless Mario steps it up and turns things around pretty quickly he's relegated to be a really good energy guy who should get 20-25 minutes a night. I think he would flourish in that role. Just look at what he's done in his last two games coming off the bench. He's averaged 6.5 ppg and 7 assists in 24 minutes per game (Okay. Now it's a small sample size I know, but who's looking like a genius here?).
Now, this team has obvious deficiencies like size. You begin with the starting center J.O.(I get you can complain about him too, but we'll leave that for another post) and then where else do you go to Anthony & Magloire? Love the hustle, but give me a break. And, they certainly can use more consistency out of the second scoring option. Though, you can't argue over the last ten games Michael Beasley has been a BEAST. 18.0 ppg 7.4 reb and 48% FG is pretty bleeping good.
Then there's the whole Wade efficiency/conditioning debate. Props to
Riley for saying what some of us have been thinking (out loud in my
case on the air) and to Dwyane for taking it like a man and realizing
he can be better after he set the bar so high last season.
But, for all the talk about how this season means nothing, and it's all about next season we may have something to monitor after all. Do they need to address the need for a starting caliber point guard? Ok Rio I'll check to you. What do you got for me?

I'm of the opinion that Ted Ginn will never win in this town and with good reason. I for one am not a believer. Listeners to my show who are Ted Ginn loyalists were trying to convince me that his 2nd season this past year was equivalent to that of Steve Smith's sophomore campaign in Carolina. Ginn had 56 catches for 790 yards and 2 TD's. Smith had 54 for 872 yards and 3 TD's. Now, the numbers were similar, but my eyes told me they were very different. Smith is and was NOT a guy who shied away from contact. It always seems like Ginn is searching for the ground or the sidelines. He's been labeled soft by many and to be honest it's been hard to disagree at times.
This season he's on pace to have a worse season than his rookie year. The third season for WR's is supposed to be the BREAKOUT season. Guys like Steve Smith (Carolina), Laverneous Coles, Santana Moss, Chris Chambers, Javon Walker, Roy Williams, Lee Evans, Braylon Edwards, Roddy White and many more have shown that the third season is the year they announced their arrival among the leagues top tier wideouts.
Here are some of the names recently who got worse in their 3rd season (and did not get injured that year). Jacquez Green, Germaine Crowell, Troy Edwards, Rod Gardner, Koren Robinson, Quincy Morgan, Bryant Johnson, Mark Clayton and Reggie Brown. Not necessarily the most inspiring list is it? Only Donald Driver was a guy whose production went down in year 3 and then busted out in year 4. I wouldn't hold my breath on Teddy becoming Donald Driver.
To add insult to injury now we find out that Tennessee's RB Chris Johnson has called Ted Ginn out regarding some stupid race during the off-season.

Now, that's some funny stuff. Though, I'm not saying this should be held against Ginn. For all we know this could all be made up. I've been covering professional athletes for 10 years now. They are the most competitive people we have in this world. And, they'll go to great lengths to prove it. I've seen athletes challenge each other in many ways physically. Things such as, dunks to 3pt competitions, HR Derby's to foul poles, and most certainly races. Hell, I've seen guys make friendly wagers on how long practice will go. All to simply prove one is somehow better or smarter than the other. I've also seen plenty of guys exaggerate or embellish stories to make themselves look better too (cough cough... Shaq).
It turns out that maybe Chris Johnson the NFL's fastest man might have been telling a whopper. Or, Joey Porter being a team leader (even though most of you guys can't stand him) is taking up for his guy like a team leader should do.
12-17 joey porter-contradicts chris johnson's version of race jf
Either way as funny and entertaining as this may be (and trust me, I've been giggling about this for 24 hours now) the conversation just re-opened the discussion about Ted Ginn's shortcomings as a receiver. I've been a Dolphin fan as far back as I can remember. I'm 32 years old and can only recall one player more maligned than Ted Ginn and that was Sammie Smith. He still takes the cake. I can still hear all the chants of, "Sammie Sucks," in my head today as if I were still watching that game vs the Oilers. I remember reading he needed a police escort that day after the entire stadium erupted in that chant. Ginn's trial's & tribulations have not reached that epic proportions, but he's certainly carved out a niche in the Dolphins RING OF DIS-HONOR in his 3 seasons.Look, I could be wrong, and he comes to be the next Donald Driver, Hines Ward or Devery Henderson, who all blossomed in their 4th season. Doubtful. On the other hand, he does become the WR version of Sammie Smith (hopefully without the need for a police escort). Likely. One eery similarity... They were both the 9th overall pick. Okay. So, who's available in the draft?
P.S. Now, kick the Titan's butts!
P.S.S. For those who have not listened to the show (6am-10am Weekdays on 790 The Ticket WAXY-AM - www.790theticket.com), here's a funny parody song our MC/Update Guy Alex Donno created after week 3, and we thought the season was lost and Ted Ginn was stinking it up. Enjoy!
P.S.S.S. (Last one I promise) Tomorrow's show guests: 6:30am - FINS WR - Greg Camarillo, 8:30am - Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ Rashad Evans 9:00am - Camarillo - Replay and 9:30am Miami Herald's own Armando Salguero to talk about the Dolphins.
Hope you tune in!
