LeBron has no idea what he's asking for

LeBron James seems to be laying the blame of this 9-8 start on his head coach Erik Spoelstra.

This morning Chris Broussard of ESPN gave us this story on how the Heat players are frustrated with Spoelstra.

You don't need to perform brain surgery to figure out this was another genius idea from LeBron's camp to relieve some of the pressure off of LeBron and his teammates.

I've spoken to several media types that were at the game in Dallas. They've all told me that while the team had their, "players only meeting," Maverick Carter was seen walking out with LeBron.

If you've followed the Summer of LeBron at all, you know who Maverick Carter is by now. No need to rehash the details of their relationship.

In your last Nike commercial, you asked yourself if you should stop listening to your friends?

The answer is a resounding and emphatic, YES!

Think about it, in sports, only Tiger Woods has had a worse year in that department.

Hell, Alex Rodriguez thinks you've been handling your business poorly these days.

Ironically, I feel like those two have so much in common it's scary. Both have been sports prodigies, neither had a father figure, aloof, yet seeking acceptance and both sought out the best opportunities to win championships.

I think I'll do that blog some other time, but I digress.

It seems like LeBron is gaining another label. One that Alex Rodriguez does not possess. Fox Sports.com's Bill Reiter alludes to it in his latest column. He claims LeBron may be a coach killer.

Now, if Erik Spoelstra is let go, it's going to be perceived that it was all LeBron's doing. That may or may not be accurate, but that will absolutely be the public perception.

That means that Pat Riley would likely become the head coach. Which, also means that LeBron and Company's tenure here in Miami would become self fulfilling to prophesy.

It would be proving the doubters right per se.

In turn, it would then bring back Pat Riley to the sidelines. Moreover, like Al Pacino in Godfather 3 you'll hear the screams of, "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in!"

Now, I of all people can attest to the Riley fascination. I'm at the front of the line when it comes to admirers. I bring all sorts of man crush at Riles. So, much so I named my damn dog after the man.

I'm not alone on that front. I came across an excellent NY Times column from Mike Wise about Pat Riley's retirement in 2003. It has some great insight into who Riles is.

About five years ago, Pat Riley heard that Todd Day was upset with his methods. A marginal N.B.A. player had been talking smack behind his back.

So Riley gathered his team together and asked if anyone on the Miami Heat had a problem with his leadership.

''Todd Day, you got a problem with how I run things?'' he asked.

Day backpedaled for a few seconds -- until Riley silenced him and told him to get out, he was done. Guaranteed contract or not, Day was cut.

''Now,'' Riley said, breathing deeply, ''does anyone else have a problem with how I run this ship?''

See, that's the kind of stuff I love about Pat. There are countless stories like that. Such as, the time he stuck his head in a bucket of water.

Riley was notorious for pre-game challenges to his players' manhood. Riley, (during one of those Heat/Knicks playoff wars) reportedly dove face down into a bucket of water for about a minute, emerging to declare: ''You've got to want to win as much as you want to breathe.''

It's why when in the Wise article a sports executive was asked to explain Riley's allure to women, her response was:

''Women don't love Pat Riley,'' she said. ''It's the men. He's a dude magnet.''

So, you see part of me gets why LeBron would want him. It's the same reason Shaq wanted him and not Stan Van Gundy.

He's a dude magnet.

The problem is, LeBron has never really had that person to tell him what to do.

Is he truly ready for something like this?

(Wise Article)

Today, Riley also leaves a league of players who have insulated themselves with people -- agents, family, friends -- who tell them what they want to hear. Riley told players what they needed to hear, and that is how he made multimillionaires compete as if they were trying not to get cut from the junior varsity.

Shaq talked about his military upbringing and how Riley reminded him of that lifestyle. He called him the greatest coach he has ever played for.

Then when push came to shove it ended with him and Riles almost coming to blows. Which led to Shaq becoming a member of the Phoenix Suns.

Here's the last great excerpt I'll share from the Wise article:

Indeed, Riley was the coach who could teach how to never lose another grade-school fight behind the cafeteria. He could teach how to make peace with a hard-knock father without saying a word. He could teach how to -- in the most medieval sense -- be a man.

LeBron James has been a basketball prodigy for as long as we can remember now.

The question remains if he's ready to -- be a man?

Thanksgiving no time to panic for HEAT

I know Heat fans are a little bitter this Thanksgiving morning.

Meanwhile, the brigade of haters/doubters are relishing. They have a little extra pep in their step.

You can still give thanks to Pat Riley and company on a day like today.

Though, judging from my twitter account very few of you are in a forgiving mood.

Lebronbitterface The reality is this fan base and this team needs to keep perspective of the situation.

I know this is a football town, but this obviously isn't a 16 game season.

The point is folks, they (Heat) and anyone else was wrong to think this team was going to just breeze through the season.

They should treat the regular season like 82 preseason games. LeBron and Wade particularly need to figure out how to play together.

They play very similar styles. So, that will take a little longer than anticipated. They both have extremely high basketball IQ's. So, as long as frustration doesn't set in. They will figure it out soon enough.

Now, what they really need is a shooter/play maker (Miller) in the rotation.

Having Miller back will help the motion offense they wanted to run. Spot up shooters don't help the motion/transition game, they wanted to play

Miller has PG skills, can penetrate, and also shoot 3's at a 45% clip. No one else on this roster can do that.

All they need to find out is if they can replace Haslem's rebounds? Either with Dampier or a trade in Feb.

This year this team had no margin for injury.

If you have been following along, that has obviously, not been the case for the Heat. So as everyone in the country takes great joy now. If/When they figure it out as JVG said tonight, they'll be pretty bleeping nasty. Much like what everyone had anticipated.

Nevertheless, until then it will be a struggle.

That's the reality of the situation. So, enjoy the turkey and the fixings. All will be alright eventually.

It just may take longer than anyone expected.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Rodman claims he was drunk during interview

I know... I know... SHOCKER!

Via TMZ

Dennis Rodman -- a recovering alcoholic -- is now pleading "intoxication" to explain why he did an outrageous early morning radio interview.

Dennis Rodman called in to the "Jorge Sedano Show" on 790 The Ticket Tuesday morning to talk about the Miami Heat-- but that was quickly derailed by sexual moans and giggles from the woman Dennis said was in bed with him.

Rodman's rep tells TMZ, "Dennis was clearly intoxicated and doesn't remember much."

The rep continues, "Dennis wants to apologize to his family, friends, and fans" -- and says it was a bad day for Rodman's ongoing alcohol issues.

If you didn't get a chance to listen to the interview yet, you can hear it below.

Dennis rodman interview - 11-23-10

Seriously, I love Rodman. I loved him as a player and as a personality. However, after what I heard yesterday on my show, he needs major help.

I hope he gets it.

Dennis Rodman gives his thoughts on Heat (sort of)

NBA great Dennis Rodman made an appearance on the Jorge Sedano Show on 790 The Ticket this morning. He randomly called in to weigh in on the Heat discussion. Then things really got interesting.

You'll either think the interview was awful, interesting or both. It's barely coherent. It has a trainwreck kind of effect.

So, in other words... It was GOLD!

David Stern talks about LeBron and other NBA issues

David Stern took his talents to Comedy Central and the Stephen Colbert Show.

Stern is always one of the more interesting interviews, and this one has plenty of chuckles in it.

The Commish discusses LeBron, the CBA and old school short shorts among many topics.

Another day and another person rejoices in Heat slow start

This comes courtesy of the great website Sports Radio Interviews.

Mark Cuban joined ESPN Radio Dallas on the Ben and Skin Show.

Mark-cuban

On the slow start for the Miami Heat:

“Hallelujah, boys, is that great or what? … How cool is that? Now, they could still turn it around and win out for all that matters, but you’re starting to see some of the problems. Any team with a strong, big guy that can score, they’re getting abused by. Paul Millsap goes out and pulls a Tracy McGrady. What, Tracy McGrady scored 13 and 30 and Paul Millsap scores 11 in 29 seconds or something like that? They just don’t have size to battle. They have the fewest points in the paint of any team and that’s tough. … My buddy Dan Gilbert is smiling all the way, too. Again, it’s early in the season and you never quite know how it’s going to play out, but how glorious.”

I know this all comes as a shock. Especially, when you consider how well Mark Cuban took that NBA Finals back in 2006.

Who knew that he was tight with Dan Gilbert?

I seem to remember he was fined 100k b/c, he was so interested in, "helping," his good buddy...

In a CNNMoney.com interview, Cuban was asked he if is interested in signing James. Cuban said he is hopeful that James will try to force a sign-and-trade, which would give the Mavericks an opportunity to acquire him.

"Come July 1st, yeah, of course, anybody would be interested in LeBron James," Cuban said in the interview. "And if he leaves via free agency, then it's going to be tough. If he does like I'm guessing, hoping he will, which is say, 'I'm not going to leave the Cavs high and dry,' if he decides to leave -- there's still a better chance he stays -- then he'll try to force a sign-and-trade and that gives us a chance."

Well, I guess that's all in the past. Right?

Plus, he was going to sign and trade for him. So, I'm sure that makes it all better. Wait a minute, isn't that what Miami did?

Funny how in Mark's world he forgets he was willing to do the exact same thing and would have welcomed LeBron with open arms.

Sedano's Email Bag 11-11-10

Q: I agree that Peterson is coming and Ireland and Sparano are on the very hot seat...Sparano specially, because Ireland could be demoted to scouting director because he has a good reputation around the league. Remember this email ....Brian Billick...why? He's worked with Nolan in Baltimore and I suppose they want to keep the 3-4 and  most importantly he is a very good friend with Peterson. - Bob

A: If Carl Peterson indeed is the next Football Czar for the Miami Dolphins then Billick makes some sense. Everyone wants Bill Cowher if Tony Sparano is replaced, but I would also keep an eye on the likes of Herm Edwards or even Marty Schottenheimer. Moreover, I think you may be putting the cart before the horse here. Until, this team is mathematically eliminated all this talk is premature.

Q: Beyond your arrogance (smartest and loudest guy in the class) and Heat "apologist" role ---you are surprisingly naive for a professional in the media. I think you know Lebron James misstep called "The Decision" and the hype and PR about the Miami Heat Dream Team led to heightened expectations for the season starting with game 1!

Now you, Wade, Lebron, Spo (wrinkled suit lapel) and your 790 cronies are busy lowering expectations generated by the hype..."It's only eight games". - Larry

A: The Decision is long behind us now. The expectations would be there with or without the one hour special. The point is, that in basketball teams rarely gel right away. Especially, when you are adding components that are not familiar with their specific roles (IE: LeBron & Bosh). Must we forget that the Heat Championship team of 2006 was 2-6 vs opponents witha r ecord of .500 or better? Miami will struggle vs the good teams for a bit until it finds its footing. Anyone, who thought this team was breaking the Bulls single season in total was smoking some good stuff. No disrespect to Jeff Van Gundy.

Q: Why is Chris Bosh struggling to rebound the ball? He was averaging double digit rebounds in Toronto and is averageing half that right now? - Roy

A: I think a lot of it is lack of familiarity with the Heat's defensive system. Miami's defensive system is about rotation and covering for the next man. Sometimes, that will mean that Bosh finds himself out of position on rebounds. It's on him to get passed that.

ESPN's John Clayton on Dolphins Loss to Balt.

John Clayton joined us for his weekly appearance on the Jorge Sedano Show on 790 The Ticket.

He weighed in on the Dolphins recent loss to Baltimore:

Sedano: The Dolphins simply lost to a better team.

Clayton: I’ll agree with that and particularly on the road too. Baltimore is a team that is definitely in the Super Bowl hunt and has a great chance to maybe end up with Pittsburgh as the number one seed, and that was the doom of some things at the beginning of the season. You know the schedule is going to be tough, you know the game is going to be there (Baltimore) and if you don’t play the perfect game you’re not going to beat the Baltimore Ravens.

Sedano: Chad Henne doesn’t take risks, he does what he’s told to do; at what point do the Dolphins let him loose, if that’s the right move to make?

Clayton: That’s obviously not a criticism of Chad Henne, but more of a criticism of the coaching staff because Chad Henne just runs the plays, he doesn’t call the plays. If you don’t have the ability to audible to big plays or you don’t have the desire to let him do that then you see that’s a recurring problem that has been a criticism all year. I don’t think Ed was being overly critical of Chad. I think at some point particularly with the talent that’s there, and yes, there’s no real solid deep threat as far as running. Again, there’s no Ted Gin with that type of speed but I think that’s a problem. And that’s something that I think they need to do. I went to the Atlanta v. Tampa Bay game on Sunday and there were some criticisms about Matt Ryan, similar type of thing when they go against cover two defenses, they don’t try any cover two beaters. Finally they started to figure out some things with the talented quarterback, fired a 43 yard pass down the left sideline to Michael Jenkins and it just turned the game around. The dolphins need to try to get some big plays and find some ways to get the defense from swatting on routes.

Sedano: There’s a lot of talk about the blame game being played and that’s usually the beginning of the end. Would you agree with that assessment or do you think that that may be just guys posturing at this point to make sure there guys are viewed in the right light?

Clayton: I think that show you that there is recognition that this is a season at the crossroads. With a lot of decisions coming up at the end of the season I think that is a normal case. I think you even see that in the locker room with some of the player reactions and the frustration really bubbling over. Whether they’re funneling at a Baltimore full back or internally, but I think you can see that that game on Sunday was an emotional one in the sense that now there’s a growing recognition that this team is destined to finish third place and if you’re third place, everybody’s wondering why. So yes, that is a reality. Some how, some way, Tony Sparano has to try to get the focus back into playing better football and trying to find a way to win some games because right now it looks like it’s going to end up being a 9 win season.

Sedano: Can Tony Sparano or Jeff Ireland find themselves on the hot seat?

Clayton: I think that’s been in the cards since Bill Parcells decided to step back and move into a different direction and hand the team over. Now with a new owner, there will be a review at the end of the season to see where it’s going. Steven Ross inherited this group and inherited a pretty good team and I think it’s up for review. Obviously 10 wins sounds better, 9 wins is alright, but I think that necessarily we shouldn’t be feeling real good right now if they don’t make the playoffs even though its going to be tough going in because you look at the Jets and the Patriots as being better teams. I think it would be unfair that anything happened to them but it’s an unfair league.

Caller: The Dolphins got away from Ronnie Brown after the 1st quarter. What else can we do to get our running game going?

Clayton: Maybe what it comes down to is that I know they want to set things up to have good balance and have more passing and maybe force a little more passing but sometimes running back rotations end up hurting. Running backs a lot of times need that 16 to 18. It used to be 25 but nobody’s getting that 25 carries anymore. So they always like to have that rotation but maybe in some ways they need to extend the rotation. Maybe go to three possessions as opposed to two. When you’re sharing the back field which is pretty much the case, maybe that doesn’t give Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams a chance to carry as much. Go back to last year when Ronnie was hurt and then Ricky had his chance to get more carries. The more carries he got the better he got but now it seems like they’re spreading the wealth but everybody’s getting poorer. They’re trying to pass the ball more and keep both backs with a certain number of carries and its simply not getting everybody working as well as they should.

ESPN's Ric Bucher weighs in on HEAT

ESPN NBA Sr. Writer/Analyst Ric Bucher joined the Jorge Sedano Show (790 The Ticket - Miami Heat Radio Flagship) recently, and gave his thoughts on the Miami Heat.

Jorge Sedano: On Heat players hitting big shots now in regular season vs. in the playoffs

Ric Bucher: “You need eight or nine guys to be able to answer the bell at that level each step of the way, and maybe the Miami Heat have those guys. All I’m saying is don’t kid yourself because you have two or three superstars who might be able to respond in the moment that that’s suddenly going to make it easier for the rest of those guys. I don’t care if the shot is wide open or not, your ability to know that you have the weight of your team with the shot on the line and hit it, is a whole different pressure and until all of them prove that they can carry that weight, we don’t know for certain that the Miami Heat can win a championship.”

Jorge Sedano: On Chris Bosh responding to pressure:

Ric Bucher: “Chris Bosh and the way that he responded to that game one, I need to see more now.  I didn’t like the body language, I didn’t like the way he responded to that first big game against Boston in terms of his ability to be one of those guys you lean on and say we don’t need to worry about him when we get to the conf. finals when we get to whatever big game we have this guy will be there and accounted for and is going to execute and do everything he possibly can and if you don’t have at least all of your superstars delivering than I think that really hurts you”

Jorge Sedano: Who are the guys you put a checkmark next to? Guys you think can deal with the pressure?

Ric Bucher: “Dwayne Wade, Udonis Haslem, Eddie House, I’m sure I’m forgetting somebody those are the guys you immediately put a checkmark next to.”

Jorge “Not LeBron?”

Ric Bucher: “Not yet. Based on what I’ve seen in big games, with everything that happened in Cleveland, if it was a matter of he just didn’t have enough around him ok, but I saw LeBron struggle. Not even struggle, not get locked down but have difficulty in figuring out what it was that he wanted to do in really big games.”
