Thursday morning quick hits: Dolphins, Tannehill, Canes, Heat

Some quick hits on a Wednesday night/Thursday morning:

### Ryan Tannehill told Houston writers today that Dan Marino has reached out to him: "I talked to him a little bit. He's a great guy and he's willing to help out in any way, so he's a great asset."

### One agent who has dealt with the Dolphins said the team still has several veterans on its radar, but knows that vested veterans on the roster for the first week have guaranteed contracts the rest of the season. Miami will consider adding a veteran or two after Week 1.

### Here's the detailed answer Joe Philbin gave Houston reporters today when asked what he likes about Tannehill: “I like his decision-making. If you watch the preseason film, there’s not a lot of picture of him throwing the ball into triple coverage and double coverage and making really bad decisions. Certainly, we want him to be a hair more accurate as we move forward during the regular season, which we believe we will be. So No. 1, I like his decision making. No. 2, I think he has enough velocity with his arm that he can make the throws we need to make in this offense, whether it’s the 15-yard out breaking route, whether it’s the seam balls down the middle of the field, whether it’s throwing the ball on the move, which we think he does extremely well. We think he has a talented arm. The third thing is this guy’s a football player. In college, he helped his football team at two positions. He knows the game. He studies the game. The other nice thing is when he comes off on the sideline, this guy can kind of tell you exactly what happened. It’s not a mystery to him what just went on on the field. He might even tell you before you tell him that, ‘Yes, coach, I should have read the out breaking route instead of reading the option route based on the coverage.’ He knows what the coverages are. He’s not surprised a whole lot on the field.”

### Tannehill, on new receiver Anthony Armstrong: "I like what I've seen so far. Saw his speed first thing yesterday. Today, hit him on a couple slant routes where he got separation... and turned it into a big play."

### Philbin wants quickly-developing pass plays Sunday: "We don't want to be taking five and seven step drops all day. We do that, I think we're playing right into the hands of the Texans."

### For Dolphins fans advocating that Miami signs tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., keep in mind that he reportedly failed a Patriots physical after a tryout.... Receiver Jabar Gaffney auditioned for Oakland today after working out for the Dolphins on Monday. But Oakland then signed former Dolphins WR Derek Hagan.

### Receiver Davon Johnson, a non-factor at UM the past two years, has earned more playing time after a solid game against Boston College, coach Al Golden said Wednesday.

### Louisiana-based defensive end Tim Williams, rated as Rivals.com's No. 36 prospect in the country in the 2013 class, told rivals.com that UM "has a little bit of an edge" on other schools, but Alabama, LSU and FSU are very much in the mix.

### The Heat will make a decision whether to sign former Knicks center Josh Harrellson after watching him all week in workouts at AmericanAirlines Arena. If they choose against it, they'll consider other available backup centers.

### Tannehill, asked by Houston reporters if he can name the teams in each division (something Hard Knocks viewers learned that he didn't know):  "I still can't. Maybe it will be an offseason project when I have some time."

Monday’s Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech college football game drew a 2.9 overnight rating on ESPN, according to Sports Business Daily — down 12% from Miami/Maryland last year (3.3)

Despite the decline, the 2.9 overnight was actually the second-highest of the weekend for college football on any network (broadcast or cable).

At least Tannehill can name the important stuff, such as what he just did wrong in practice.
