UM recruiting update with Signing Day looming; NFL media column

Five days before National Signing Day, here’s the most stunning factoid about UM’s recruiting class: The Canes have as many commitments from players who grew up in Nigeria as they do from recruits who attended high school in Dade or Broward.

As one clever fan cracked to Manny Navarro on Twitter, UM is putting up a wall.

Around Nigeria.

But seriously… the fact that UM has snagged only two local kids – defensive backs Artie Burns and Jamal Carter – is eye-opening and a bit disconcerting at this late date. That’s not to say UM’s class is inferior. There are some very good players in this group of 12 – quarterback Kevin Olsen, Burns, defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammed and tight ends Beau Sandland and Standish Dobard.

But UM needs to close with a flourish.

That’s why many will question UM’s decision to pull its scholarship offer to Denver Kirkland after Kirkland refused to accept what amounted to a take-it-or-leave-it offer on Thursday.

Kirkland, ranked ninth nationally among offensive tackles by rivals.com, is universally rated higher than the three offensive linemen who are orally committed to UM: Alex Gall, Hunter Knighton and Sonny Odogwu.

Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris, who used to work for UM, reacted angrily; check out Manny Navarro’s UM blog for details.

Harris didn’t go as far as to say it would hurt UM’s chances of luring Matthew Thomas, one of the nation’s top linebackers, but you have to wonder.

A quick Canes update with signing day approaching:

### Defensive tackle: Considering Miami's need for impact d-tackles, it will be a disappointment if UM can’t lure either Jaynard Bostwick or Keith Bryant. But Bryant has said Miami is trailing FSU and South Carolina, and Bostwick has a strong relationship with the Gators’ defensive coaches and will spend the weekend visiting UF.

UM still believes it has a real chance with Bostwick, but the Hurricanes are no longer a favorite here. At best, it’s a tossup for the Port St. Lucie tackle. And Alabama isn’t out of the question. If Bryant reverses course and picks UM, it would be a major surprise.

UM has a decent chance of grabbing defensive tackle Terrell Brooks, a junior college All-American in Texas this season. But his coach told me tonight that he’s not sure what Brooks will do, and that Kansas State and Baylor also are in the mix.

### Running back: As long as UM gets either Alex Collins or Augustus Edwards, the Canes will be content. But it would be troublesome if they don’t get either.

Collins’ coach, Doug Gatewood, told both me and Manny Navarro today that he isn’t pushing Collins to Arkansas, contrary to Internet chatter. He said "I don't think Alex knows" what to do. That gives him only the weekend to choose among UM, Arkansas, UF and Wisconsin before he announces on Fox Sports at 10 p.m. Monday.

Gatewood denied a report that Collins has cut the field to just Miami and Arkansas, but it would be a surprise if he doesn’t end up at one of those two schools.

Meanwhile, Edwards told Rivals.com tonight that he no longer ranks FSU ahead of UM and has both schools about even heading into his Coral Gables visit this weekend.

### Linebacker: FSU always has been confident about landing Thomas, but UM and Alabama remained strongly in the mix as of Thursday. But it remains to be seen whether Thomas is influenced by the Hurricanes’ spurning of Kirkland…. Louisville and Tennessee are making a hard push for Miramar’s Jermaine Grace, but it would be a mild surprise if he doesn’t pick UM.

### Receiver: Stacy Coley, the only receiver that UM really covets, hasn’t tipped his hand, but is said to be strongly considering UM, FSU and USF. Mississippi also has drawn consideration. His coach said he loved his USF visit this past weekend.

### Tight end: With Jeremy Kerr switching his commitment to FSU, UM has an opening for a third tight end in this class and is targeting Virginia-based Ryheem Lockley, who will visit this weekend. UM and UF appear the top contenders, according to canesport.com, but Lockley likely will spend this fall in prep school. Miami also has resumed speaking to Indiana-based Nate Wozniak, who also can play offensive tackle.

I thought with the NCAA blonder, that the door will open for the local kids. It is reasonable that we could get modest sanctions. Unless these kids are playing UM? I don't get? I could only guess what is going on behind closed doors. Go Canes!

DC Cane

I dont like how it looks coming down the final stretch

cane4ever

These kids are being dupped by the ncca and other coaches using this as a tactic to get recruits. I coukd never honor a team that would stop to that level. Honestly I like being the under dog and bite the big bad teams. Therees notging really being said about Alabama auburn lsu and Tennessee as far as the alleged deer antler spray goes. The owner of the company admitted this as well as cease order Alabama issued in 2011. All proof it happened so close to signing day its not being pushed as is with Miami. Thats all the media and the ncaa has been doing for good reason swaying kids. Espn has larfe contracts with the sec. And they need these kids to put on a show for contract purposes.

Soldy

ohhhhh no

Soldy

Not good. Who's playing who ? No way this should have hit the press. Hopefully U have some 2 star backup silent commits.

Coach BTW "ICE" no Likey

U Looose again

Sadly.......Miami s NCAA sanctions still hang high over their head.Recruiting has been more adversely affected this year than last as crunch time is nearing.Too bad Miami has not been able to sign more solid committments at big need spots up to this date.Canes need 3 or 4 solid / good players and if they don t get at least 2 good ones out of their remaining targets......THIS year will have been a bust.Kirkland NOT signing/being passed over has hurt as well.

ifeeltheheat

wow, really dumb, stupid, "turrrable" move with kirkland. just shameful on UM's part. not the way to win the hearts and minds of our local kids. and this after only having two oral commits with kids from dade and broward less than a week before signing day!
i'm severely disappointed with coach golden. why the need to pull the offer? just a hugely dumb move. i certainly want to hear golden's explanation, although i doubt it it will change anything.

playthefreshmen

Miami should have waited on Kirkland just as they did (and had patience) with Tracy Howard..

boe

Golden did the right thing. Golden has some silents and Kirkland had to do was say im a cane, not this top 3 crap. Miami cant get burned at the alter like coker and shannon did. Golden has the plan stop panicking, everything will be ok.

linksys

Universities can't be waiting on Signing Day to know whether a kid is going to sign or not. I assume they gave Kirkland a chance to say yes or no, he didn't say anything, so in fairness to the other players the 'Canes are recruiting they had to move forward. May not be fair for one kid, but is opening a door for another kid who wants to be a 'Cane and doesn't have to wait until Signing Day to decide.

ALACHUA COUNTY LIBRARY HAS FREE INTERNET

SOLDY=GALLO

AND LOUISVILLE JUST SCORED AGAIN!!

jacky

the U screwed it up--let kirkland have his moments in life.no need to bully him,so i hope he goes to U of L with teddy and the other fla dudes up there or anywhere else,I'll root for him.U needs all they can get at this point, plus you dont piss off the local coaches,a big no-no regardless

Jo jo

Can t believe these posters (some anyway)cannot comprehend that Miami cannot wait for a maybe or a no until the final day.THAT is not intelligent when you are concerned with only a handful of schollys left to hand out.Through no fault of his own....Golden s hands are unfortunately tied by the NCAA getting ready to take some away.Other commits who DEFINITELY want a scholly to attend Miami...are in the waiting obviously.College recruiting nowdays is run very much like a business. There is a numbers game.Period.Like it or not......at least for THIS year ...Golden and Miami were not in a strong position to wait for every single recruit.THAT is unfortunate but a reasonable choice had to made by Miami.

valdis moseley

None of these recent developments makes any sense. My guess is we're not getting the full story. Its against ncaa rules for coaches to talk .about recrutspo

UMike

BOE: FINALLY, someone with a real brain. Isn't it amazing how these people PANIC so quickly?

Personally, I'm sick and tired of the four and five star athletes who basically HOLD COLLEGES HOSTAGE with their guessing games, always saying that "it's between three schools" blah, blah, blah...these are UNPROVEN HIGH SCHOOL RECRUITS who have never played a down of college ball, yet people are ALREADY treating them like some kind of super stars....it's one of the big problems with athletes today.....!
To me, it should be done like Duke Johnson did it....he wanted to be a Cane all his life and he didn't hold anyone hostage...neither did Chickalo....I have more respect for those two than any of these prima-donna's....with Kirkland, if UM offered him a full shot to a school with the academics and athletics like UM, he should have the INSIGHT to jump on it...NOW, his coach is supposedly pissed off at UM? F**K HIM, too! He's a high school football coach, THAT'S ALL...he shouldn't even be in the mix...afterall, the kid is moving on, out of high school...the coach should be saying "it's up to you and your family" PERIOD!!!!!!

I am not panicking at all about UM...we're not getting 33 recruits like last year, and we have to be very choosy about who we get...he got offered a scholarship and wanted to play "cat and mouse" - I'm sure that Coach Golden has a backup, trust me!

GO CANES!

Clueless in the Gables

Why does UM have to wait until NSD?
Why can't Golden lock up the local kids early?
Florida has 25 kids in the fold
FSU has 17
Va Tech, Clemson and even UVA have more kids commited than the canes
What difference it makes if Kirkland wanted to declare on NSD?
So did Tracy Howard last year
And so are Thomas, Coley and Collins
Why not call their bluff and pull their scholies too?
What a disaster.
Who's in charge here?
Does anybody have a clue?

TK SWAN!!

THE CANES HANDS ARE TIED AND THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO WAIT ON CERTAIN POSITIONS WHEN THERE IS ANOTHER FULLY COMMITTED TO BEING A CANE. IF KIRKLAND WANTED TO BE A CANE HE WOULD HAVE COMMITTED. DON'T TELL ME BETWEEN NOW AND WEDNESDAY HE IS GOING TO ALL OF A SUDDEN DECIDE TO MAKE UP HIS MIND! BULL! HE JUST HAVEN'T DONE IT BECAUSE HE DO NOT HAVE TO. HE WAS TOLD THAT THE CANES REALLY WANTED HIM BUT IF HE COULD NOT GIVE THEM A FIRM COMMITMENT THEY HAD TO MOVE ON. DON'T BE SURPRISED IF THE NCAA ANNOUNCES SOMETHING IN THE INVESTIGATION TO MAKE LAST MINUTE RECRUITS THINK HARD ABOUT COMMITTING.

Mike B.

Booker LB Matthew Thomas eliminates Miami. Down to Bama, FSU and USC.

DAMN !!!

Yupiwentthere

Mt6 didn't eliminate anyone u putz. Stick to reality

Marios

One one hand we had enough OLs and needed a yes or no because of low number of scholarships, but this guy was worth more because of his teammate LB.

Seems to me the U had inside info they had already chosen FSU and were trying to hold Golden/Coley hstage.

Or maybe the U feels better about what they already have(our whole OL is coming back next year and we have great back ups). Maybe he wants to save scholarships for defense, which I feel we are in greater need of.

UMike

TK SWAN: IF the NCAA does something like that, they will only look EVEN WORSE in the eyes of everyone in the nation, and their reputation is ALREADY TAINTED...doing that would send a really, really bad message to all schools about what the NCAA is doing to UM - basically a WITCH HUNT over the past three years.

This entire investigation has turned into a joke, as the NCAA has TRIED TOO MANY THINGS and been proven wrong every step of the way...that's what they get for even sitting down and listening to a CONVICTED, IMPRISONED FELON who openly stated that he was "going to take UM down" - the NCAA is looking more and more like they abuse their power...if they chose to hand out UM's sanctions one day or two days BEFORE SIGNING DAY, they will look like even BIGGER FOOLS...but, we'll have to wait and see....I wouldn't put anything past them after this STUPID INVESTIGATION...it's so obvious that they are after UM, even without anything substantial to go by.

F**K THE NCAA!

GO CANES!

Jo jo

Clueless in the Gables: Guess you ve been living in a cave the past few years. There s something called NCAA sanctions looming at the U.Because of the NCAA s recent/own admission gaffe/own incompetence....they have extended Miami s period of delivering it s Notice of Allegations. It will be at least 4 months at least until this thing is settled....at the earliest.THAT has obviously made some recruits skittish.Miami will get a couple good ones but EVERY college program suffers when they are being investigated by the NCAA.I see how you got your username though.

AnonymousCane

JOJO lol, you got it right, SEC and Urban Liar are negative recruiting hard against the U because of the limitless investigation of the U. Clueless I Gables chose his name well.lol.

As for Harris lol, he gave the kid bad advice, the U sends a message that they will not be held hostage, Harris and company over estimate his importance to the U's recruiting, Kirkland was not coming to the U, they found out and moved on, feel sorry for the kid, not! the Herald fans the flames and takes a view not surprising at all and everyone becomes chicken little.

Good for the U, good for Golden and this class will do just fine, a bit disconcerting Barry, not if u sit where I sit, lol!

mike

Al Golden is not an idiot. If he pulled an offer, you can bet there was a really good reason...Move on and move forward.

AnonymousCane

If Kirkland was going to commit to the U, I have just one question to ask him or his mouth piece, Ice Harris!

Why not give the u a silent? Just say,"Yes I'm coming, hold my spot, I want to play the hat game on Wednesday but yes I'm coming to the U." Why not if u are genuine in your commitment?

He doesn't do that and Golden moves on, listen folks, Golden is using his psych degree just like JJ did, he sent a message the other day and I can tell you from conversations that I've had, that message....was heard loud and clear!

After this year there won't be the negatives Golden and crew have to work against and with Critobal and Coley, coupled with Carrol and Richardson will have a top rated class and will be killing it on the recruiting trail.

The U haters have had their last blast about being upset that the Onion was let go and the U sanctions will be past history and it will be time to move on.

It will be like Warren Sapp said to the West Virgina football team before a big game "that to run with the big dogs, you got to get off the porch!" Kirkland is still sitting on the porch!
