Thursday Tebow/McKinnie update; Heat update; Ireland speaks out; UM adds European player

Some Dolphins and Canes quick hits:

### Contrary to Internet speculation today, Tim Tebow did not visit the Dolphins and there are no plans for him to do so. The team has not expressed interest in him, and the Dolphins are happy with their quarterback situation as it stands.

So where did all the Tebow talk come from? Part of it was a hoax. Part of it resulted from a couple of national media outlets suggesting that the Dolphins' refusal to state on-the-record that they're not interested in Tebow suggested that they might be. But saying something like that on the record is not the Dolphins' way of doing business. And even though they haven't said it, they have not pursued Tebow and aren't expected to.

### Bryant McKinnie re-signed with Ravens, spurning offers from the Dolphins and Chargers. The Dolphins' offer didn't measure up to San Diego's. Miami also has been considering the three right tackles it worked out yesterday - Tyson Clabo, Eric Winston and Winston Justice.

### The NBA announced that the Heat's first two games of the next round will be at 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at AA Arena. The rest of the schedule - against the Bulls or Nets - hasn't been announced.

### Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland, appearing Wednesday on the team-owned radio show on WINZ 940, suggested that one indication that the team is deeper and better is the fact he can’t come up with a final roster, or anything close to it, in his mind.

“I try to cut the team two days after the draft,” he said of a mental exercise he likes performing this time of year. “It’s great that I can’t. In years past, I can cut it down to 57, 58 players. It will be a lot deeper team. There will be position battles.”

### Asked if he felt obligated to fill needs in the draft, Ireland said: “I really didn’t. I never go into a draft thinking I have to address needs. The board has to fall the right way to address needs. I don’t want to pass up good football players to draft a need. You make mistakes if you do that.”

### He said he asks him scouts “to create a vision for the player. What are they going to do on third down? And if they’re a young developing player, what are they going to do on fourth down?”

 ### Asked if there was one player he really wanted but couldn’t get, he said: “This year, I went into this draft saying I’m not going to let that happen. And I got him. Dion Jordan. Dion Jordan was the player I didn’t want to pass up.”

When reminded that many TV pundits thought he was trading up for Lane Johnson, he said: “Lane Johnson is going to be a fine player, a tremendous athlete. But the pass rushers, the versatility of Dion’s skill set is unique. I wasn’t going to pass that up.”

### Ireland said linebacker Jelani Jenkins “will probably back up at multiple positions and has a chance to start in the future.”

### Ireland said Dion Sims “played [last season] at a much heavier weight than I would suggest he came in at.” But since the season ended, he dropped from 280 to 260, which leaves Ireland encouraged about his commitment.

### Asked if Miami might go back to using more 3-4 defense instead of last year’s 4-3 approach, he said: “There are some pieces you can look at it. We came from a 3-4 a year ago. We joked as a scouting staff we changed a year too late. Joe Philbin and Kevin Coyle will put together a creative defense. I’m excited about this defense because we can come at you from multiple different places.”

CANES CHATTER

### We mentioned two weeks ago that UM was expecting to add a European point guard. That guard is Emmanuel LeComte, a 17-year-old who plays in the Ethias League in Belgium. UM confirmed that he has signed with the program.

"Manu LeComte is a true point guard," UM coach Jim Larranaga told our Michelle Kaufman. "He is quick and fast and can shoot. He will have to learn the American college game. But with the loss of Shane Larkin and Angel Rodriguez having to sit a year, it is nice to have a point guard who can play right away."

The Belgian Youth Basketball Blog described him as "very, very talented" with a "ton of experience for his age" and "can take over a game."

LeComte, 5-11, told stateoftheu.com: "I'm quick. I can shoot from everywhere. I will need to improve my body, get more in the weight room."

### David Thompson, who is attempting to play both baseball and football at UM, has a difficult decision ahead: determining whether to play in a summer baseball league or begin honing his skills and body for the football season. Thompson, a quarterback, has a chance to be a holder on field goals this season.

“I know he’s a good player, can be a better player,” baseball coach Jim Morris told several media outlets today. “He just needs to work more on baseball right now.” Morris stopped short of saying a decision had been made about his baseball involvement this summer.

Thompson, who leads UM with 28 RBI but has been slumping recently, told Canesport.com: “Pretty much when baseball is over, I’ll be walking across the outfield and going right to football. Hope to compete for the No. 2 spot.”

### The transfer guard that UM is hoping to lure from Texas – Sheldon McClellan – averaged a team-high 13.5 points last season but also drew the ire of coach Rick Barnes because of lack of intensity and effort at times. Others – including Illinois, Marquette and Oregon – are also in the mix.

Reality Bites

I'm willing to give Ireland some slack. Last year he did well picking Tanny. The FA moves this season seem good on paper and so do the draft picks. It all depends how these players pan out once the season starts. But for right now it looks good.
So UM BB got some french midget to replace Larkin, seems pretty desperate to me. NIT 2nd round exit here we come. Back to normal.
Thompson should stick to baseball.

ESPN-ACC GOR: Time was Running Out

Well now that we all are pleased with the GOR (grant of media rights) signing by the teams of the ACC; it should be noted that the B1G was not and is not stopping its expansion move. As discussed the ACC began protecting itself back in Third QTR. last year. It was a necessity (see link to article) and a good defensive/aggressive plan by Swofford and the ACC to protect what was in many minds the very best overall conference in the USA: academics, all sports including Olympic, geographic footprint, and demographics of its footprint:

1. Brought in Notre Dame as an associate member--and just to repeat --ACC was not the only conference to offer Notre Dame the deal
2. November article with Swarbrick and Swofford indicating that the ACC from a TV dollar perspective would be "in the ball park" of other conferences--in fact Swarbrick indicated dollars would be greater than other TOP 5 conference(s)
3. Uncovering of the ACC Network that is soon to be announced--more later
4. Loss of Maryland but a very fast turn-around bringing in Louisville--remember the 4x4x4 realignment planning/strategy group that the ACC constructed prior to 'Cuse/Pitt being invited to the ACC....this committee is still up and running and continuously updates its "what ifs" and "what to execute" based on college landscape and opportunities that the ACC should pursue
--happened so quickly without negative publicity based on 4x4x4 recommendation to ACC Conference--members of 4x4 included 4 presidents, 4 AD's, and 4 athletic department faculty representative
--this committee has its "bag" of recommendations ready to go for just about anything that is going to come up relative to expansion and TV contracts etc

So why was this all revved up in the 3rd Qtr. last year....and even earlier....the link published last night is a good read. It is evident that the B1G was hunting long before most knew publicly that they were hunting universities in the BE, ACC, SEC, and to a degree the Big 12.

There is more to this insofar as what was transpiring...and some even had the universities targeted but did not have all the facts...majority of universities were not moving at least in the ACC because they had been taken step by step as to what the ACC was undertaking....award of STEALTH COMMISSIONER truly goes to John Swofford

THis is very interesting.

Its interesting that SEC network will be based on ESPN studio in Charlotte, which is right next to RAYCOM>

I do believe that before its over ACC is going to have the same NETWORK model as SEC, and there is going to be ESPN network sharing between SEC, ACC and Longhorn Network. ACC is going to get a huge bump. THe sports arena is going to be separated. Big 10, and PAC 12 is FOX and SEC and ACC is ESPN/ABC.

However, the partnership with ESPN with ACC and SEC will also create made for TV opportunities. I expect the ACC/Big 10 event will not be renewed, but it will be replaced with the ACC/SEC. Also there might be more cross scheduling along with Texas or out of country events.

ACC will offer up RAYCOM who has staff already to meet the digital requirements of he networks. ACC will subsidize this, resulting in huge labor/operations savings for ESPN, resulting in more profits for the company.

OKAY THE DRAFT IS OVER I THINK IRELAND HAS SURPRISED US ALL WITH A REALLY AGGRESSIVE OFF SEASON IN GETTING PLAYERS. NOW IT IS TIME TO SETTLE THE OT POSITION BUT HE STILL HAS TIME TO ACTUALLY GET THAT DONE. THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF IF'S BUT "IF" SOME THINGS PAN OUT ON THE FIELD WITH THE TALENT WE HAVE THAN I HAVE NO DOUBT THIS IS A 10 WIN TEAM OR BETTER. JUST IMAGINE THAT A PLAYER LIKE GRIMES RETURNS TO FORM OR MILLER HELPS US TO FORGET BUSH. BUT THE KEY WILL BE IF JORDAN/WAKE FORM A DANGEROUS PASS RUSH DO NOT BE SHOCKED IF AFC EAST COMES DOWN TO THE GAME AGAINST THE PATS IN MIAMI. DO NOT BE SHOCKED. WISHFUL THINKING? MAYBE! THINKING LIKE A HOMER? DAM RIGHT! REALISTICALLY? CAN'T DO IT RIGHT NOW TO MANY BEERS LAST NIGHT WATCHING THE PLAYOFFS!!PLUS I'M GONNA FIND A WAY TO PUT MY DOLPHINS ON TOP!! GO FINS!!

Just watched link of new french Canes PG, looks like carrying the BB is allowed in France, he plams the ball in every drive, could be good but looks thin and young.

Fins are improved but I don't like the schedule, specially early on.

The ACC’s future bowl lineup is likely to include the New Era Pinstripe Bowl and a return to the Gator Bowl, a source told ESPN.com.

The source also said the ACC is likely to maintain its partnerships with the Champs Sports Bowl, the Music City Bowl and the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, but that the Belk Bowl is leaning towards and ACC-SEC matchup for the future. There is also a good possibility that when the Big Ten plays in the Discover Orange Bowl, the ACC will slide into the Big Ten’s slot in the Capital One Bowl.

Nothing is solidified yet, as the future bowl lineup is on the agenda for the ACC's spring meetings (May 13-16) this month in Amelia Island, Fla.

PICTURES DON'T DO U JUSTICE

Ireland said last week that he drafts "horizontally" based on needs, now today he says that he picks best player and points to the Dion Jordan pick, WTF?
Still don't see a solution for our biggest problem, the Red Zone offense, Eifert at 12 could have given us one, but wait, we took Caleb Sturges.

Watch Dion Jordan vs Stanford on you tube, the guy is lost, can't find the ball and is always the first guy at the scene "after the tackle", I'm not saying he's not all that, but I don't like the tape.

1. Eifert
2. Melenik Watson/Terron Armstead
2. J Taylor
3. C. Lemonier/Damontre Moore
3. Jonathan Franklin
4. Jelani Jenkins
5. Brandon McGee / any CB
6. Quisenberry / (any OL)
7. Dustin Hopkins
7. Any DB

Looking at the schedule and our team I'm predicting 9-7 or 8-8, hopefully we make playoffs.

Tony

No red zone answer? Really? Mike Wallace, Keller,Lamar?, Clay? Hartline? Gibson?

Verde With SEC Envy ...

Yo GREEN ... Gots []_[]r own ACC ESPN NETWORK ?

SEC Network To Broadcast 24/7

Southeastern Conference sports -- including football and basketball -- will have a 24-hour-a-day home when the SEC Network launches in August 2014.

The SEC and ESPN announced a 20-year agreement and rights extension on Thursday. The deal includes a new television network and digital platform that will show SEC sports 24/7, including more than 1,000 events in the first year.

Included in the programming will be 45 football games, more than 100 men's and more than 60 women's basketball games, 75 baseball games and selected events from the other 17 SEC sports. The network will also feature studio shows and coverage of special events such as signing day and football pro days.

The digital network, which will launch nationally with AT&T U-verse, will show hundreds of additional events. Each SEC school will have the opportunity to produce and develop content for various platforms. The network will be based in ESPN's offices in Charlotte, N.C.

The extension means the SEC will have its games on ESPN's family of networks, plus the SEC Network, through 2034.

"The SEC Network will provide an unparalleled fan experience of top quality SEC content presented across the television network and its accompanying digital platforms," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement. "We will increase exposure of SEC athletics programs at all 14 member institutions, as we showcase the incredible student-athletes in our league. The agreement for a network streamlines and completes an overall media rights package that will continue the SEC's leadership for the foreseeable future."

"The SEC is unmatched in its success on the field and its popularity with fans nationwide," said ESPN president John Skipper. "The new network's top-quality SEC matchups across a range of sports will serve all sports enthusiasts including the most passionate, die-hard SEC fans. Also, it will serve the needs of our multichannel distributors and advertisers by providing extremely attractive programming options across all platforms."

turns out I was right and now coach L needs to bring in a football player, Elder, as his only decent, half good point guard, 3 star scrub.
Just like I said, 2nd round NIT exit if lucky, back to normal.
