6 p.m. update: Marlins sign two relievers; Barkley, Shaq differ on Heat; UM recruiting and NFL draft

6 p.m. update:

### Looking for veteran bullpen depth, the Marlins signed former Cubs and Dodgers right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol, who has 117 career saves but also exasperated the Cubs and their fans with 28 blown saves and control problems before Chicago dealt him to the Dodgers last July.

Marmol, 31, saved 34 games in 2011 but also led baseball with 10 blown saves that year. He had 38 saves in 2010 and 20 in 2012 before losing his closer's job last season.

Between the Cubs and Dodgers, he finished last season with a 2-4 record, a 4.41 ERA, two saves and three blown saves. Most troublesome: He walked 40 (and allowed 40 hits) in 49 innings last year. He also struck out 59, but that didn't offset his control problems, which caused the Cubs to finally dump him.

Overall in his career, Marmol has a 3.46 ERA but has walked 385 in 563 innings.

The Marlins will pay Marmol $1.25 million for one season, according to our Clark Spencer.

When I think of Marmol, what initially comes to mind is Marlins TV analyst Tommy Hutton's angry but amusing rant about Marmol a couple years ago, when he started walking batters and Hutton vociferously questioned his acumen to be a closer.

But Marmol is a hard thrower, and with the Marlins, he would be a set-up man at best. Closer Steve Cishek ended last season with 29 consecutive saves, the longest ongoing streak in baseball.

The Marlins also signed Chaz Roe, who had been designated for assignment by Texas. Roe, 27, was the 32nd pick of the 2005 draft but hasn’t lived up to expectations and was suspended 50 games in 2012 after testing positive for an amphetamine.

In 22 innings for Arizona last year, he struck out 21, allowed 18 hits and 13 walks and had a 4.03 ERA. He had a 1.11 ERA in 25 minor league appearances last season.

### Charles Barkley has never hopped aboard the Heat bandwagon during this championship run, and he isn't about to start now. Barkley announced on a TNT conference call today that “Indiana is the best team in the NBA” and that “David West and Roy Hibbert owned” Miami, "beat them like a drum down low."

“If they get a healthy, motivated Andrew Bynum, they’re going to be very difficult to beat,” Barkley said. “If you look at the Heat, the wear and tear is starting to take its toll. It’s obviously taken its toll on Dwyane Wade. It’s starting to take its toll on LeBron. It’s tough to beat LeBron four times in a week.”

But Shaquille O’Neal countered: “Just because you have homecourt advantage doesn’t guarantee you’re going to win the championship. I lean toward a healthy, experienced Miami" in a likely Eastern Conference Finals matchup with the Pacers.

And Kenny Smith added: “Indiana is the best regular season team [but] I can’t say they're the best team [overall]. In the last three years, no one in the Eastern Conference has beaten Miami in a series. There’s something about being able to close out the Big Three."

And Smith said: "Chris Bosh is the most underrated power forward in basketball because of what he does on the offensive end and creates so many mismatches.” (Bosh opens games at center, but Smith's point is understood.)

### Al Golden told WQAM’s Adam Kuperstein and Channing Crowder that he was nervous about Chad Thomas signing because Thomas told him he would direct message him at midnight Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and did not, causing Golden to worry that he might not pick UM.

“I didn’t hear from Chad, couldn’t get any sleep," Golden said. "Chad was joking about it with me [Wednesday] morning. Not so funny, my friend.”

### Golden told WQAM’s Joe Rose: “We would never drive past a local kid to fly out of state” to recruit, but that it’s difficult to fill some needs locally.

“There’s not a lot of tight ends down here, 250 pounds and can run like Clive Walford. So we had to go up to Atlanta to get Chris Herndon. Hopefully, we’ll find that kid down here next year. We will always [look] down here first to exhaust whatever position it is before going out of state."

### Golden said the one position where UM is still looking is offensive line, “maybe a junior college kid.”... Please see the last post for everything notable that Golden said yesterday.

### Though UM missed out on some elite local players, which certainly doesn’t sit well with them, blaming the UM staff for some of those would be short-sighted. For example, Plantation American Heritage’s Sony Michel cited the poor crowds at UM games as one reason that Georgia was more appealing.

Homestead receiver Ermon Lane, who’s FSU-bound, told me UM did nothing wrong and that he simply wanted a new experience going to school out of town. If scheme was a factor in Travonte Valentine picking LSU –-- which one of his coaches believes was the case –-- then UM bears some responsibility there. But he also said he felt more of a bond with LSU players than UM players.

UM wanted FSU-bound Dalvin Cook, but if he had come here, would he have been content sharing carries with Duke Johnson and his high-school teammate Joseph Yearby?

Would UM like to keep more of the elite local kids, as it did with Chad Thomas this year, Stacy Coley last year and Duke Johnson the year before? Absolutely. But some kids simply want to leave home.

And with the momentum of a national title, FSU has made significant recruiting inroads here that UM needs to reverse with the elite kids who aren't adamant about leaving South Florida. For UM, winning more is the obvious first step toward achieving that.

### The Marlins, who have been looking for another reliever or two, today signed Chaz Roe, who had been designated for assignment by Texas.

### Mel Kiper said he sees Louisville and former Miami Northwestern quarterback Teddy Bridgewater being drafted as high as fourth to Cleveland.

“You see similarities between Donovan McNabb and Bridgewater,” Kiper said. “Bridgewater throws a good ball, makes good decisions. I like that he thinks pass first, run second. Come draft day, he may be a little underrated. He may be a guy you get at 4 or number 8.”

Kiper expects Texas A&M’s Johnny Manziel to go first to Houston or third to Jacksonville.

CAN UNDERSTAND SONY AND DALVIN...WITH YEARBY ALREADY COMMITTED THAT'S A LOT OF CARRIES TO GO AROUND. OVERALL A TOP 10 RECRUITING CLASS IS GREAT, WOULD'VE BEEN EXCELLENT WITH VALENTINE AND MAYBE JC JACKSON THOUGH. STILL SATISFIED. MOTEN AND WYCHE WILL BE A PROBLEM IN THE MIDDLE.

A PROBLEM FOR OTHER TEAMS I MEANT

Marios

Thanks Barry for explaining why some of these kids didn't pick the "U".

Hopefully this directly answers to a lot of unfair criticism of Golden from this blog's readers as to why he didn't get every single outstanding local player to sign with Miami.

What most of us are still waiting for is Golden's version of why did his defense give up such huge amounts of yardage and points and what he has done so it won't happen again this year.

I am not calling for AG or his DC's head, but I believe an explanation on this was warranted but not delivered to us season ticket holders.
I can tell you I went to most home games and late in the season the defense's performance was truly hard to watch.

Mr. B

The fans that dont show up to games, but then are quick to rip these kids that are playing their hearts out have a lot to do with. It's embarrassing to see the twitpics and camera shots of the crowd. But then you see all tne trolls and understand why kids don't wanna play here when there are better teams and better support elsewhere.

CANESADOPEWAY.

I'd love to hear you defend Golden's failure to get a commitment from Port Jervis (N.Y.) Prep's TE J'Dason Barrett-Jackson. Blue chip 260lbs.with soft hands and extraordinary speed (4.42 40). Why did Golden ignore him, even after he was rumoured to have publicly expressed interest in the U? Explain that!

Lt. Lois Einhorn

Marios, it sounds like you may have missed all the comments Golden has given on N'oD, he gets asked about it quite frequently.

Those answers are one of the reasons people are calling for N'oD's head - in everything else Al Golden is completely straight up and forthright, but when it comes to his BFF he has nothing but excuses. To summarize those excuses, it's the players' fault and the defense isn't actually that bad if you cherry pick obscure statistics and delusionally ignore all of the important ones.

Setting aside the fact that a coordinator who can't adjust his scheme to his personnel is not a good coordinator, many fans believe the philosophy of N'oD's scheme is a bad fit for Miami.

He doesn't want to press receivers and doesn't want to blitz or bring more than 4 rushers. His scheme is bend-but-don't-break, it relies on not letting up the big play and having every defender on the field at the right spot at the right time.

Many fans think the philosophy of this scheme completely negates the instinctive and athletic attributes of the defenders Miami historically recruits, but Al Golden has never directly addressed that question, for fear of making his best friend look bad.

Like most other UM fans I believe Al Golden is the man for the job, but only if he can fire his best friend. Warren Sapp of all people said it best - you don't hire someone you can't fire.

CANESADOPEWAY, at least your name is right, "DOPE". No on cares what some dude on a blog thinks. Obviously our football people were not interested. You know, football people who actually do this for a living, vs. some dude on a blog who might be super sizing fries tonight.

Truth Hurts

I am so glad a player finally said the truth about attendance being a factor. Even if you grow up a Canes fan, why would you miss out on the real college experience? Let's face it, Miami is a commuter school with not much campus life compared to other schools. Then you don't even get to experience a real football crowd at home games. C'mon. Easy decision. Only reason Chad Thomas committed here is because he is building relationships with MMG (Rick Ross' Miami music company) that will help him with his music career. On top of that, you have a coaching staff that has a history of not developing talent. Let's get real. There are clearly better options for kids than miami right now.

long time cane

Too much nitpicking (Lt Lois Einhorn)excluded of course. She s always right on the money with ACCURACY and FACTS.Anyway Mr B. seems to think fans should remain quiet or behave as if they are stupid.Like we can t give our sincere opinions.Seems like most fans are ripping the DC or Golden s less than honest conversations about WHY the DEFENSE is so consistently AWFUL.Sorry you re so embarrassed about some fans having other things to do in their life, like raise a family,go to Disneyworld, visit relatives or friends on weekends.Your feelings are hurt because sometimes they don t go to EVERY game?People pleasers like you should just stick to the facts.D Onofrio has done a lousy job and Al hasn t explained the failing philosophy very well or truthfully in why the defense consistently stinks and his refusal to make more productive changes or decisions to CREATE a better DEFENSE.Coddling an inept Coach is hardly being forthright.

Lt. Lois Einhorn

That's not true at all, UM is in no way a commuter school. UF and FSU both have a higher percentage of students living on campus and Miami is mostly students from the northeast, hardly any native Miamians.

Marios

Truth Hurts:

Miami has good attendance when the opponents are worthwhile. I had season tix the past 3 years and when a ranked opponent comes in it's every bit the rowdy atmosphere and full house.
It's just that they have filled our schedule with such crappy opponents that I have a hard time finding someone to use my tix for free bacause I prefer to watch from home or do something else with my family.

Even in our heyday in the 80's the OB was rarely sold out unless it was a ranked opponent, and regarding the campus experience at UM you are completely wrong, it is a beautiful campus and a great university to attend.
If what you are looking for in the "college experience" is beer pong, frat parties, and getting wasted every night because there is nothing else to do in town then a place like Gainesville might suit you better.

Marios

Golden has "acted the fool" when addressing the scheme's problems and has not given season tix holders like me reason to think next year won't be the same.
When you watch in person and can see the whole field and not just the line of scrimmage like on TV, you can see opponents WIDE open, specially in the flats.

No matter how much better the talent may be, if guys are in the wrong place and no changes are on hand for next year, then I'm not renewing my Hurricane Club membership and will buy individual tix next year in case I don't want to see the horror show we had to witness last year.

g8rseetmya55

Listen- some good points but these kids aere swayed by the media- UM has NEVER had huge crowds. NEVER. UM only sold out 2 games a year at home:

FSU, UF,

and occasionally a big game against a ranked opponent if it meant something like revenge and hate (Notre Dame, U Washington), or dislike (Oklahoma). So at most 3 a year. If that. Look up the average attendfance in championship years (1987, 2001)- against teams like Rugers or Syracuse, or Temple: 35, 000 etc. SO whiners (including Sony Michel) who talk about crowds, are a) ignorant of history, and b) ignorant of facts. Sony Michel has no clue what awaits him at UGA- I know for a fact UGA blogs can be quite nasty towrds underperforming players- and there is a racist element over yonder that Sony will have to contend with- believe me. Athens is no Fort Lauderdale either- you wait and see. By the way- Does anyone realise that Sony Michel has an iunjured knee, has been taking pounding since 8th grade at a varsity level as well! Kid may end up a huge bust and I believe UM coaches werent that keen on him!

As far as Donofrio is concerned- yeah our D stunk but guess what so did our Offense. Time of possession DIRECTLY impacts the defense at least by the 3rd quarter. Stephen Morris was pathetic on keeping drives going, and in maintaining drives by making key 3rd downs. Whether that is also partly due to the OC (Coley) calling stupid plays, I think is both. Morris could not read defenses well (aka Louisville) and he made terrible decisions often. With theloss of Duke Johnson, we also lost a major weapon, so Defenses teed up on Morris knowing that Dallas Crawford and Gus Edwards / Eduardo Clements were not even close to the threatrs that Duke was. And that was a afact. So, guyess what by the 3rd q our D was sucking wind. That is the reason we lost to Duke- so dont blame all on the defense

Lee

Excellent comments by g and Marios. Probably the dumbest play called in years had to be sending Duke into the middle of FSU's 8 man front on 4th and 2.

liont

Theses kids kill me saying they wanted to go to school out of town and then they go to Florida state.your still in Florida if you wanna g
o out if town go out of state not to a place that ain't betta than Miami

The Sports Brother are killing it on WQAM in the afternoons. They are fun to listen to a nice refreshing change in local radio.

try hittiing the space bar after ending a sentence period you HATER. _ You dope.

Enough with the Defense bashing. They have improved every year. The will continue to improve by leaps and bounds with all these new additions on defense. The new DTs will lead the way and a few will be All-ACC. You will see them be a top-30 Defense next year leading to the ACC Championship game. A Top-10 Defense and ACC Champs in 2015 and back playing in the OB game at home just like the Glory Days as a Top-5 team. A Top-5 Defense in 2016, in the 4 teams playoff and then National Champions. Trust me, we are already BACK ! Next years process and Goldens leadership will prove it. Anyone that thinks otherwise, just doesn't know the C.A.N.E.S. and doesn't understand !

SWAG IS BACK ! (2014 CANE THANG motto!)

I may be young, but I DO !!! Duke, Yearby and GUS DA BUS are close to being at that level and by the 2015 could be equal as far as yards gained. And with Kaaya at QB they will be even better. Wait til you all see Kaaya run play action passes and throwing the ball all around the field. We'll look like FSU next year with three great Runningbacks and a Freshman QB that comes out of nowhere and in the mix to be a Heisman finalist.

U WILL SEE !!! Trust in GOLDEN ! 2014 THE NEW STORM BEGINS !

also, Chad Thomas will be Freshman All-American and player of the year. Book it.

11-1 Season. FSU ACC game loss (barely). and Bowl WIN !

12-2 ! U WILL SEE !!! Can't wait for Spring !

rboud

People need to stop attributing the defensive scheme to Coach D. This is Golden's scheme!! Get it - he has his coaches run the schemes he chooses. He doesn't give his coaches a lot of latitude in their decisions. Before UM changes its defensive scheme, Golden will have to give the OK.

Georgia Cane

Cook went to FSU because he didn't want to share the ball with Duke & Yearby. He will be sharing the BENCH! Instead
