The forecast is looking quite sunny for this Miami startup: Weather Puppy, an innovative weather app, launched Sunday and was just featured in TechCrunch. "Everything's better with puppies," says Weather Puppy's co-founder, Suraj Hemnani, and it must be true: The app is currently the No. 5 free iPhone weather app in the country.
The free app has several themes available for either no charge or 99 cents, including a custom “Add Your Own Doggy” theme, which lets you upload up to seven pictures of your own best friend. The dog images change with the weather -- sun-loving doggy wearing shades, chilly doggy under a blanket, etc. -- and a person can upload their own pictures for different weather situations. "I love dogs. We thought let's make something cool and fun with the weather. It's an opportunity for a pick me up every time you check the weather," says Hemnani, who co-founded the company with Shiv Takhar.
What further sets this app apart is it enables animal-related nonprofits to fund-raise using the platform to create and sell customized themes. Weather Puppy has partnered with 13 charities nationwide, including Paws4You Animal Rescue in Miami and the Broward County Humane Society. On Sunday, the charity partners helped get the word out on the launch.
"This is the wall calendar for the iPhone generation," Hemnani says. "Our goals were to create an app that makes people smile and a platform that can help charities fund-raise. We achieved the first and are well on the way to the second."
