Forum bringing Americas' social entrepreneurship ventures to the Miami stage

Steve-Wozniak Jessica_jackleyWhat do Kofi Annan and Steve Wozniak have in common? They are both speaking at The Americas Business Council (abc*) Foundation’s 2012 abc* Continuity Forum this week at the Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove. Other speakers include: Chris Hughes of New Republic and co-founder of Facebook, Jessica Jackley, co-founder of Kiva.org;  Cesar Conde, Univision Networks president, Harvard economist Roland Fryer, explorer and filmmaker Alexandra Cousteau, hip-hop recording artist Emmanuel Jal and others. (Jackley and Wozniak are pctured above.)

The three-day forum Nov. 12-14 -- now in its second year -- provides a platform for social entrepreneurs from the Americas to share their organizations’ work. The Americas Business Council, a nonprofit that calls itself a think-do tank to support high-impact leaders and social entrepreneurial projects in the Americas, is partnering with Ashoka, the world’s largest association of social entrepreneurs, and Innovadores de America, an organization that awards individuals for superior social, scientific, business and cultural achievements in Latin America. Out of 117 pre-screened initiatives by these two organizations, the abc* Foundation selected 33 to present at the 2012 Continuity Forum. These include a company that transforms urban building surfaces into green landscapes, a project to develop earthquake resistant buildings in developing countries and create jobs at the same time, a system that allows members  to enlist help from one another as a form of currency; and another one bringing education to underserved Mexican communities via technology, to name a few. At the end of the Forum, the abc* Foundation will select three projects to receive funding and hands-on advisory, as well as media and marketing support for two years.
