Honduras, Mexico bounce back

The fight for the last guaranteed spot out of CONCACAF very well might come down to the last match of the round.

After losses in their previous matches, both Honduras and Mexico respond Wednesday with must-have wins.

Carlos Pavon scored in the 13th minute to lift Honduras past El Salvador 1-0, while Mexico broke a 1-1 tie with Trinidad and Tobago with a 48th minute goal from Oscar Rojas.

And so, with five matches left to play, Honduras sits in third place with 7 points, Mexico in fourth with 6 and El Salvador in fifth with 5.

The top three teams after the 10-match final round earn automatic bids to the 2010 World Cup, while the fourth-place finisher has to win a play-in game against the fifth place team out of CONMEBOL.

Currently, that team is Ecuador, which knocked off Argentina Wednesday night.
