Look who I found @ Soccer Locker!!

Elpibe Look who I found buying cleats for his sons at Soccer Locker in Kendall! That's right...Carlos "El Pibe'' Valderrama, former Colombian and Miami Fusion star, just strolled in, and was nice as can be, chatting World Cup and posing for photos with customers and sales people.
He likes Argentina and Brazil to go far. Thinks US will advance from group, but not sure they are experienced enough to go much further. Impressed with Seattle Sounders' and Philly MLS fans, said he was there for games and loved the atmosphere, lamenting that Miami should have a successful pro team.  El Pibe is heading to South Africa next week for Futbol de Primera.

13 days to go...

The 23 guys heading to S.Africa are...

GK: Howard, Guzan, Hahnemann

D: Bocanegra, Bornstein, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Goodson, Onyewu (healthey enough), Spector

MF: Beasley (worked his way back into the mix), Bradley, Clark, Dempsey, Donovan, Edu, Feilhaber, Holden, Torres

F Altidore, Buddle (off to great MLS season), Findley (speed), Gomez (on a roll, good form)

The seven who didn't make the cut: Ching, Bedoya, Kljestan, Marshall,  Johnson, Pearce, Rogers

Team is going to the White House tomorrow to meet with President Obama and former President Clinton.

Who will make the cut?

US coach Bob Bradley will announce his final World Cup 23 today at 1 on ESPN..a few tough choices to make...

My guess: 3 Goalkeepers (Howard, Guzan, Hahnemann) Defense-Bocanegra, Onyewu, Bornstein, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Goodson, Spector. Midfield-Bradley, Clark, Dempsey, Donovan, Edu, Feilhaber, Holden, Beasley. Forward-Altidore, Ching

On the bubble for the final 3 spots: Buddle, Gomez, Torres, Bedoya, Pearce, Kljestan, Rogers

What do you think????

Halftime musings...

US and Czech Republic tied 1-1 at the half in Hartford. Most US starters not in uniform. Game is being used to evaluate bubble players and players who were coming off injuries, like Gooch...One bad sign: Gooch was outjumped by a guy shorter than him. When healthy, that didn't happen. Was he protecting his knee? Bob Bradley hopes not. Will be interesting to see what he does second half.

Edson Buddle looked good, as did Stuart Holden. DaMarcus Beasley made some nice runs, too. Maurice Edu scored the lone US goal.

Team will be trimmed from 30 to 23 after the match. Announcement of final roster at 1 p.m. Wednesday on ESPN live.

We're getting close...Michelinha!

And the 23 US Players are....

...OK, we don't know quite yet. But we will know TOMORROW (Wed) at 1 p.m...US Coach Bob Bradley will announce the 23-man World Cup roster live on ESPN between 1-2 p.m. Tune in to see who makes it!

US team plays Czech Republic tonight (Tues) in Hartford. Game is on ESPN and Galavision. Final chance for the guys on the fence to prove they belong.

Final tuneup before leaving for South Africa is Sat. May 29 vs. Turkey in Philly at 1 p.m. Game is on ESPN2 and Galavision. Team departs for South Africa the next day.

I leave two weeks from today! Can't believe it's almost here already!

Are your kids getting wrapped up in the Panini Sticker Album craze? Let me know.

Thanks, Michelinha!

Why I love the Irish!

Got this note from owner of Mickey Byrnes Irish Pub in Hollywood (1921 Hollywood Blvd.) asking to include them on list of places to watch World Cup. Included this note:

"Because we are an Irish bar owned and operated by Irish people, we still are a little fragile regarding the dubious qualification of the French so we will be offering free shots to all customers every time a goal is scored against France...to help lessen our pain!"

Sounds like a great place to catch a France match! June 11 vs. Uruguay (2:30 p.m.), June 17 vs. Mexico (2:30 p.m.), June 22 vs. South Africa (10 a.m.)

By the way, all World Cup matches will be televised at 7:30 a.m., 10 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.

Hi from US camp

Hi from Princeton, NJ...US camp. Dreary, cold day today. Perfect training for South African winter (it will be winter during the World Cup there -- 50s in the day, dipping to 30s for the night games).

Alejandro Bedoya of Weston (St. Thomas Aquinas High) and Oguchi "Gooch'' Onyewu were the last two of the 30 to arrive. Bedoya played full 90 minutes his last game with Swedish club. The 23-year-old hopes to make Bradley think long and hard before choosing his 23. Gooch is eager to prove he's recovered from knee surgery. He hasn't played since Oct. 14. That's a LONG time.

Bedoya did the drills, but got to skip the running (and there was ALOT of running!). Gooch looked fit, but hard to tell from one practice.

Lots of media here, more buzz than in years past. John Oliver of Jon Stewart's The Daily Show was on hand, conducting silly interviews. Jonathan Spector, Marcus Hahnemann and Jay DeMerit went along with the jokes.

Bradley's press conference started on a somber note, as he paid tribute to a family friend who was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan on Tuesday...guy was an Army Col., father of five, and former goalkeeper at West Point. Bradley talked about patriotism, and importance of realizing how special it is to represent your country. Said he is trying to impart that message to his players.

more tomorrow...Michelinha.

Michelina's Musings..

So, World Cup bids are in for 2018 and 2022. Miami is looking better and better...they presented Miami Beach Convention Center as a possible site for the draw, which makes perfect sense -- December in Miami! And also, Sun Life Stadium's capacity will be increased to 80,240, contingent on Miami getting to host, which would make it eligible for the Opener and/or the Final! Can you imagine?

Decision coming down Dec. 2. We'll keep you posted.

I will continue to post World Cup Watch spots on here..Just heard from owner of Pasha's on Brickell and Lincoln Road. They will be showing all matches.

900 Lincoln Road, (In front of Victoria's Secret)

Miami Beach, FL 33139

1414 Brickell Ave, (In front of bank)

Miami, FL 33131

Also, the Intercontinental Hotel West in Doral is showing all matches in their ballroom, complete with food. Hotel is off NW 25 St and 87th Ave.
