It's only meaningless when it's hyped to be meaningless. It's like getting a bronze medal at the Olympics. Nothing wrong with that. I think it depends on the country involved. Uruguay wanted it, Germany didn't seem to care as much.
But whether it is meaningless or not, the 3rd place game is almost always action packed, fast paced, and the goals come.
