As far as a miss from an alleged top player goes, Ruud van Nistelrooy's miss against Brazil in a friendly approximately 10 years ago was also worse than Torres' gaffe. I cannot find the video of it anywhere. He missed an empty net from about a yard out because he tried to backheel it and wound up tripping over himself, if I recall correctly.
