Live soccer from Coral Springs H.S.

It's a night full of rematches in the boys' regional tournament. In Tuesday's paper, I wrote about Pine Crest getting another shot at North Broward Prep. Mike Phillips is working that game.

I'm at Douglas-Deerfield Beach, a rematch of the District 11-6A final won by the Bucks.

Douglas enters play at 10-11-2 after shocking Cypress Bay in overtime; Deerfield Beach is 18-9-1. The winner has a daunting task: Tangling with the winner of Wellington vs. Boca Raton.

From Tuesday's Miami Herald

After a few quiet days, playoff soccer returns Tuesday, with the boys' regional semifinals. The girls' state tournament is Wednesday through Saturday. But before we get too far ahead, let's look back. Kudos to Pine Crest boys, which is playing beyond even their own coach's expectations. Hooray for Douglas keeper Kelsey Wys for recording her 21st shutout of the season. And hat tip to the Miami Springs girls for downing rival Lourdes to reach the final four. Should be a fun week.

The headlines:

Pine Crest tries to keep run going

Last week's best in Broward

Last week's best in Miami-Dade

Friday's High School Schedule

Trips to Tampa are on the line this evening, as the girls' regional finals are on tap. Who'd ya like, Miami Springs or Lourdes? Can Heritage get back on top? Will Douglas take home another title? If the last two rounds are any indication, there should be battles a-plenty.

The slate:

Region 4-6A final at University of Miami: Miami Springs vs. Lourdes, 7

Region 3-6A final: Boca Raton at Douglas, 4

Region 4-5A final: St. Thomas Aquinas at Satellite, 7

Region 4-4A final: Merritt Island at Cardinal Gibbons, 3:30

Region 4-3A final: Plantation American Heritage at Miami Gulliver, 3:30

Region 4-2A final: Westminster Christian at Delray American Heritage, 7

From Friday's Miami Herald

Well, now. So much for the favorites. The opening round of the boys' regional tournament was full of surprises: Pine Crest booted University. Douglas tossed Cypress Bay. Apparently, homefield advantage doesn't count for much. These upsets dashed expectations and put other favorites on notice: Your season can end at any moment.

The headlines:

O'Connor helps lift Pine Crest; Douglas stuns Cypress Bay

Varela holds off Ferguson in two overtimes

North Broward rolls over A. Heritage

Edison rolls in boys soccer

Douglas shocks Cypress Bay in overtime

Douglas midfielder Khorie Foster headed a pass from defender Sebastian Ortegon past goalie Paul Lima to stun the Lightning - and send the underdog Eagles to the Region 3-6A semifinals.

The final: 3-2 Douglas. Foster finished with two goals for the Eagles, who still are under .500.

Regional soccer at Cypress Bay (again)

This time, it's the boys. And again, it's frigid.

The Lightning, champions of District 12-6A, host the Douglas Eagles. On apaper, it looks like a mismatch. Douglas is below-.500 and on the road.

We'll soon see.

Thursday's Soccer Schedule

After a night off Wednesday, playoff soccer is back. The girls wrap up their regional tournament Friday, but the boys kickstart theirs tonight. Game of the night: American Heritage and North Broward Prep. Both of these teams have real final four hopes. One will be on vacation starting Friday morning. I'll be back in Cypress Bay for a Region 3-6A quarterfinals game. The best team I've seen this winter remains University, which hosts Pine Crest.

The schedule:

Region 4-6A quarterfinals at Southridge: Varela vs. Ferguson, 4; Columbus vs. Killian, 7

Region 4-6A quarterfinal at Traz: Miami Springs at North Miami Beach, 3:30

Heartbreak again for Cypress Bay

Every year, the same story. Douglas advances. Cypress Bay aches.

Two thousand nine is no different. The Eagles get a late goal from freshman Monica Sanchez with 6 minutes, 30 seconds left in regulation to beat the Lightning once again.

Read Wednesday's Miami Herald for coomplete coverage.

On a side note, Wednesday is Signing Day, and I've been called in to help with the coverage. Blogging will be light, although I might pop in late in the day. I know you'll miss me.

Yours truly, providing bulletin board material

Greetings from Weston, where it's downright frigid for Tuesday night's Region 3-6A grudge match between Douglas (18-3-3) and Cypress Bay (17-4-3).

Coaches look for absolutely anything for motivation, so it shouldn't be a surprise that Douglas' Stu Katz took keen interest in Tuesday's Miami Herald story, in which Cypress Bay's Kate Dwyer inferred both teams are on the same level, talent-wise.

Katz printed out a copy of the story, and likely showed it to his team beforehand.

We'll soon see if she's right.
