Oh, the weather up north is frightful

Not that South Florida's tourism czars are gloating about the sunny, 70-degree weather here, but...Ok, they're kind of gloating.

Just as the Northeast was about to get slammed with another winter storm, Broward's convention and visitors bureau had staff in New York City handing out ice scrapers, showing off bikinis encased in ice blocks and driving around town in beachmobiles (sand included).

Miami-Dade and the Florida Keys bought ads on the NYC subway system. Both invested in ads on websites like weather.com when someone in a very cold place does a search.

My story today explores how bad weather elsewhere is good for South Florida's tourism industry (website traffic spikes when temperatures drop, for example).

But before everyone gets carried away with the headiness of January's weather, remember: This is our reward for living through August in Miami.
