FROM SMD: SHIELDS AND HILL ON SCOUT TEAM

Hi everyone,

This is Susan Miller Degnan, reporting after the end of today's practice (Wednesday).

Wide receivers Sam Shields and Ryan Hill were, indeed, on scout team today (as well as yesterday), coach Randy Shannon just confirmed to us. But he again said they are not suspended.

Shannon insisted that everybody plays scout team because they need more bodies, and he declined to specify if they had not been practicing up to his standards. He listed some other guys who also have played scout team, including running back Shawnbrey McNeal and linebackers Kylan Robinson and Eric Houston. But those guys are definitely not first-teamers. Personally, I am inclined to think that either Shields and Hill haven't been practicing well, or are in his doghouse for some reason.

Shannon also refused to say whether Shields would start Saturday, and when asked if Shields and Hill would play against Duke, he basically said it depends on how they practice.

Later. Thanks for letting me get on King Manny's blog! I might pop on this blog from time to time for some comments. Later, I can transcribe for you what Randy told us about Shields and Hill.

   Bye. Susan.

P.S. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU ALL THINK.  DO YOU BELIEVE THAT SHIELDS AND HILL HAVE BEEN TEMPORARILY DEMOTED? OR DO YOU THINK THEY'RE JUST PLAYING SCOUT TEAM FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON? HA! SERIOUSLY, LET ME KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS.

Shields needs to be smart, if he got suspended or not. He is coming off of his biggest game of his career and he possibly is in Randy's doghouse, not smart

hey susan miller degnan, why did you discontinue your Q & A forum?

Susan, there is definitely something more than meets the eye.

I'm convinced Shannon is the king of misdirection and willful, intentional vaguery when it comes to his players and team.

SS and RH must not be practicing the way starters are supposed to practice so Shannon is embarrassing them without really embarrassing them. It's public too, which makes it even more effective, better than doiing up-downs, I'd say.

A thousand thanks for the scoop.

How are they going to simulate that legendary Duke speed without Shields on the scout team?

Super, this could be exactly the reason why Shannon is punishing like this, to prevent them slacking off and thinking they've arrived, especially SS.

It also sends a great message to the rest of the team. "I don't give a F#@! who you are! You will play and practice full-speed and if not you'll be punished like the redshirt freshman."

DJ, that's a good one. lol

Expect SS and RH to have great games.

Green, how you find these things is amazing. Good work, bro'.

I agreed with Cavaleer about Coach Shannon: he's as wily as he is mean. He might be trying to confuse opposing coaches; he might be adding some needed gumption to the scout team; he might be penalizing/motivating player. He might be doing all three.
