Game day blog: UM 23, FIU 9 (F)

It's over at the OB. I'm up here in Dallas for the Southlake Carroll-Northwestern game here at Gerald Ford Stadium on the campus of SMU. I didn't watch the game, but was listening and following online.

Here's my glass half-full take:
- At least the Canes aren't Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish are getting blitzed 31-0 by Michigan.
- Aside from one big play by FIU when Spencer Adkins got beat by the fullback for a 60-yard score, the Canes secondary played much better. FIU had three yards passing and has been picked twice.
- The Canes put up over 400 yards offense -- just not enough points against this team.
- Kyle Wright and Darnell Jenkins are getting on the same page frequently. That's good news.

Here's my glass half-empty take on the game
- The Canes offense still looks inept. Wright had 61 yards passing, 1 INT in the first half. Then, he threw another pick and fumbled. But from what I've read from play by play, it seems like he's still holding onto the ball too long. At least he's connected downfield for a few big plays -- including an 80-yard touchdown pass to Lance Leggett.
- Penalties. Too many. 11 for 78 at last count.

Feed me your take Canes fans. Reminder. Andre Fernandez and I will be live blogging here on the High Schools Sports Blog once this game gets underway.

Nix will be fine he just don`t have the right quarterback running his offense.Next year we will have a athletic more mobile quaterback like they thought they had in Kirby Freeman. Get ready Hurricane fans we will be running the spread offense soon.

Manny...Glass half full/half empty? Do we even have a glass?

Sounds to me like the "bitter truth" versus the "sugar coated" versions all over again?
From where I sit we're gonna need more sugar, lots and lots more sugar.

Back up the truck...'mon back, 'mon back. That's good, dump it right here on the offense; OK, a little on the special teams; some on the DBs; yup, a touch for the coaches...there that tastes better...nice!

This Thursday will tell us alot about our team. Texas A&M will try to over power us greatly. If they can still remains to be seen.

Penn State beat FI, WHOO 59-0 we barely scored 20 points.

The bright spot about the game on Sat. is that we are one day closer to adding the NW allstars.

Jacory Harris is the real deal, but one player who stuck out the most was Tommy Streeter Jr.

I think Marve blew his chance to take over the QB spot with freeman & wright fighting for last place. With the incoming studs Harris & Cook, the competition will be off the chain.

No one respects us anymore and it hurts. We are falling apart like the OB.

I thought we needed help at QB but we got problems @ DL & LB . Campbell needs to step up and dominate like a top 5 player I just don't see it right now.

To all the players considering Miami just remember you can play right away @ the U today no matter the position.

MANNY'S PREDICTIONS:

Manny: Pain for the Golden Panthers. Miami won 35-0 last year. No reason to think the margin shouldn't be a little wider considering FIU is younger and less experienced this year.

Outcome: Not even close! Last year a 35 point margin and a shutout. This year a 14 point margin with the Canes scoring 12 less and giving up 9.

Manny: Plus, UM needs to flext its muscle after last week's national embarrassment.

Outcome: Did not happen. FIU had the ball for 10 minutes of the first quarter and Miami's starters had to play the whole game.

Manny: Miami should win easy. I'll say 45-6.

Outcome: Not even close!

Manny: Kyle Wright will throw for 250 yards

Outcome: Close on this one at 224 yards.

Manny: 3 TDs and Lance Leggett will have a big day.

Outcome: 50/50 on this one only one TD but it was to LL for 80 yards.

Manny: Javarris James will run for 2 scores and over 150 yards.

Outcome: Well, not exactly; JJ had 99 yards and NO TDS.

Manny: Campbell will have three sacks by himself.

NOT so much! Did Campbell even play?

TRY AGAIN NEXT WEEK ON: "THE PREDICTION IS KYLE", I MEAN WRIGHT, I MEAN RIGHT!

Just wanted to say congrats to UM for winning the football game. I would have loved to see a different outcome but we are a young program trying to grow. I take comfort in the fact that USF, UCF, and FAU started their programs all within the last decade or so and from what one can see in the past couple of weekends have already matched UM in performance (congrats to those programs as well). With all the new programs in the state and within a 35 mile radius of the city of Miami, it has diluted the talent of all the college programs (with the exception of UF), so we can all be competitive and not one team monopolize the talent pool.

It was nice to see UM display some discipline and class on the field for once (even though at times it appeared that it was not matched in the stands). Finally I will miss the OB and the mystic, hopefully FIU's new on-campus facility will have that same aura, likewise Dolphin Stadium for you UM fans, hopefully UM does not become abysmal and insignificant as the Dolphins have been since they moved to Dolphin Stadium.

Again congrats to UM and good luck next week.

Green, all I am saying is that those programs are competing and winning against established and respected programs. Look at UCF, they gave Texas all that they can handle and they are in the top 10, how did UM fair against their last top 10 opponent? Also, UM has had a great ride, but decades? UM dominated the 80s but in the 90s they were up and down they came back in '01 and '02 but again, in this decade they are up and down. UM has been around for decades but "decades of sustained excellence" it is not.

nycfiufan: fu lost 18 games from 2002-05. no exception to the rule ...

it felt like marshall again. all the kyle fans have said he just needs time, but he just ended up having more time to watch his first option. if that's going to happen they should make the routes shorter or something cause he's not going to be able to do that against teams with talent.

fui tier-3 recruiting = our scraps. their scraps. everybody's scraps.

can someone tell me how a qb is supposed to go thru his progression? who is his first look?

green the fact that you refer to anyone associated to FIU as "pipsqueak" just shows us how classless SOME UM fans can be. which is pretty sad b/c for the most part the fans that i was around were at least classy. you .... not so much. win w/ some class man. btw you enjoy your drive to DS and the Jumbo-tron. while your paying an arm and leg to sit in the upperdeck, i think us FIU fans will be right there up into the action. btw cant wait to hear how much gas money you will be spending and how much cash you will spend in parking. like NYC congrats on the win. it was a well played game. and congrats on the recruiting class that is coming in pretty good man. but do yourself a favor learn to win w/ some class. o one last thing. we may have lost but go over to the FIU blog and you will hear the FIU faithful still upbeat about our team not screaming for the head of the OC after 3 games.

Green,

Keep swallowing the LSD you have been fed. Do you really think UCG has a chance against A&M, BC, GT, VT and FSU ?? Better get the signatures from all those so-called Blue Chippers soon, otherwise another 6 loss season could be the recruiting meltdown of the CENTURY !!

Green...how do you get our stats that you keep posting? From the site meter on our page? Please email me at host@canespace.com.
I will protect your confidentiality, promise.

Canespace still smokes the competition! Thanks again to Manny here at "Eye On the U" for his continued support and cooperation. Canespacers appreciate Manny Navarro and the Miami Herald!!!

Manny...please confirm the LIVE chat session this Tuesday from 8-9 on the Canespace blog???

CJ, take it easy on green, he probably had too many redbulls the night before at club trist in south beach so he could be a little hyper.

Where can we post our questions for Manny
for tonight`s chat?

Please tell me Kyle was just rusty and started to hit on all cylinders in the second half. Please???

I agree with one thing: this team is mediocre compared to other 'Canes teams.

In all fairness to the players, they shouldn't take all the blame. 'Canes fans have become accustomed to and expect dominant football powerhouses. Somebody somewhere assembled a group of considerate, well-mannered young gentlemen. I mean, for gosh sakes, the team has had good players break commitments because they'd be too far from their moms! They're caught in a crossfire between the school and the fans. What's more, because of their previous dominance, the 'Canes are the most despised team in college ball, and everytime these polite young gentlemen go out on the field, they encounter pumped-up opponents who want to beat the crap out of them.

The mystery about this team is exactly why it's mediocre. I don't think they lack physical ability. I think they lack testosterone: the fighting spirit that makes men want to defeat and dominate, and that simply will not allow them to back down.

It could be that Coach Coker stocked the team with guys who just aren't the type who get all worked up about something like winning a football game. "After all," as the mentality goes, "it's only a game," and Coker stressed academics over football.

Maybe he had to, and maybe Shannon does, too. The U has a new president, and she might not allow the school to make championship-caliber commitments to the players, the coaches, the fans or to the game itself. Shalala might be full of spunk and all of that cute stuff, but she's still a GIRL, and most GIRLS, even the ones who say they "love football" to get guys on all the singles web sites, don't even understand football, let alone like it, its physically aggressive nature, and its format for logic and battlefield strategy.
GIRLS like bloodless violence.

(An aside: every female who reads this will probably go disembowel somebody just to prove me wrong, and it will be ALL MY FAULT.)

All that sounds kind of paranoid. None-the-less, the lack of fight in these guys puzzles me. Friendly, considerate football players win community service awards, not championships. Unfortunately, community service awards might be exactly what this team is expected to bring home.

Who knows? Maybe this team is all full of fight; they just lack poise. Whatever: in my opinion, this team's problems are more mental than physical. They got the horsepower to beat anybody; they just won't use it.

I think it would be really considerate of the sports writers to stop wringing quotes out of these guys. They have to toe the company line in public, so they have to say things like, "We want to play physically aggressive football like the old 'Canes." Other teams read this, and the bloodbath begins, and after the game, the quoted player looks and feels like a fool.

That ain't right. If these guys can't fight and win like the old 'Canes, then quit forcing them to say they can. They'd do much better to lull other teams by explaining exactly why they're not the brutal, uncompromising 'Canes of old.

Well . . .. The beatings will continue until moral improves.

LIVE chat with Manny is here tomorrow night, TUESDAY, from 8-9 PM...so post your questions here tomorrow.

I am all for being patient, if there is a plan on how to use the talent. All that I have seen so far is more of the same and I know that we have enough talent ,even now to win games if we used the right offensive attack, I feel for shannon because he picked nix and shannon must give him a shot at least this season, it is all on nix as far as I am concerned with the offense this yr. Lets see a grand plan then I can actually be patient, not the same tired approach.

Ok...No more bashing the coaches. That is why it's hard to get coaches to come down here. Who wants to get criticized unfairly and then have people not even appreciate you when you win. I don't recall anyone singing Larry Coker's praises when he was the offensive coordinator. Give Nix a break. He's doing a solid job.

Sup Manny?
Hope all is well with U.
once again I must say thanks for your support at Canespace.com!
My question for tonight.
How long can we allow a sub par punter to give away critical yds?
Why don't we let Daren Daly try?
Matt Bosher is killing our field position.
your thoughts?

Whats good People.

So I'm packed and ready to get down to the OB for the T A&M game and I'm ridiculously optimistic. We will get it together. Remember, never trust success that comes too quickly. That being said, is there any kind of color scheme we are trying for the game. Orange, Green? Also does anyone know if most of the tickets are sold? I bought mine awhile ago but i have a couple of buddies who are looking for last minute ticx. In a couple of days I will be burnin a swisher down Biscayne Boulevard.
(Which I'm sure will result in a trip to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company in bayside, that place is the sh#T.)

In Randy We Trust.
Go Canes B*tch!

We will get better, but after watching the FIU game...I was mortified!!I think we were better last year [God forbid].

MARVE PLEASE

Interesting quote by Coach Shannon about Leggett:

"Q: Lance Leggett was benched to start the game and then had an 80-yard TD. Do you think those two things are related?

"Shannon: It probably was. We're going to play the best players. If guys practice the right way, do the right things, we're going to play them in the game. When I was young we had something called `Coach killers.' Guys are going to run 4.3, vertical 40 inches, look great, squat the world, but when it's time to make plays they don't make them. Then there's journeyman type guys that will give you all the effort, those are the guys that make the plays. I believe you coach a guy, coach a guy, he has all the talent in the world; when he wants to get it done, that's when he's going to get it done."

So what do you think Shannon is saying about Leggett?????

Manny, here's my question for you:

Miami is favored by 3 against A&M. I'm a die-hard Canes fan, but what the f***? Are we getting too much respect here?

Manny...status of all the DTs on the roster please. Injury updates? How's getting PT this week?

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=ApUIKsm78eNgkhiv.AHmYiMcvrYF?slug=ap-t25-texas-playerarrest&prov=ap&type=lgns

why do you and your reporter friends not talk about how the media esp ESPN are so one sided in how some schools get a free pass. talk about USC and why nothing will be done although rules were clearly broken talk about texas with 6 kids arrested since june and if this was The U everyone would be saying shut the program down.

Let me all help you losers buy your next 40 oz. Take your spare change and bet on A&M, for them to be the underdog to a second rate team is free money.

Deep down you all know that Miami will get beat down whenever they play top 25 caliber teams.

Miami stinks and Coach Shannon is a bum. Quit using the brotherman approach when recruiting. Kids want to win and play exciting football.

Texas A&M is gonna hurt Miami. I am sure the Toilet Bowl will be sold out. Wink Wink
