SMD Part III on Shields, Hill (last of night) :)

Susan here again...

OK, here's basically what I'm writing in my practice report for tomorrow, only this blog (by Susan, not THE MAN-ny) will have most of what Shannon said:

The case of wide receivers Sam Shields and Ryan Hill has been solved -- kind of.

After several messages popped up Tuesday on University of Miami football-related  Internet boards saying Shields and Hill were suspended, UM coach Randy Shannon said it  wasn't true that day after practice.

On Wednesday, Shannon said Shields and Hill were playing with the scout team, as they were spotted with different jerseys. Shannon said the two also played on the scout team Tuesday -- and on the regular team, he said -- but he reiterated they were not suspended.

"Everybody's got to play both things, because we have numbers problems," said Shannon, who listed TB Shawnbrey McNeal, LB Kylan Robinson, LB Allen Bailey and, LB Eric Houston as others who have played with the scout team.

When asked if Shields and Hill were demoted, Shannon answered, "They played scout team."

He said "they might start'' against Duke and "they might not. It depends how they practice.

"You've got to get everybody ready. Here's another one. When we were doing special teams, did you all realize DajLeon Farr, [Chris] Zellner, Lance Leggett, Tavares Gooden and Kylan Robinson were on special teams scout team? That's my point. Everybody has to play it. I don't let nobody get off with anything. So, I just really don't  have a true scout team. Everybody's got to give a look."

More Shannon: "You're going to see next week some other guys will be on scout team, and then you'll come back and say, 'Why are these guys on scout team?' Everybody plays scout team.

"That settles things. Now. When game time comes, game time comes. Guys have got to practice better. Guys have got to do a good job. OK. Lance Leggett didn't start against FIU. He didn't practice well. Did you all make a big deal out of that? So what's the big deal? When guys play well they're going to play well. You all know how I am. If guys ain't doing the right thing, what's going to happen?''

Shannon was then asked, So they're not practicing well -- Hill and Shields? Shannon: "Everybody has to practice well, OK. If they're not practicing well, you'll know. If they are, you'll know. I'm not holding any punches.''

OK, UM FANS, SO I ASK YOU ONE LAST TIME: NOW, AFTER READING JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING (AND EVERYTHING PERTINENT) RANDY SAID, WHAT DO YOU MAKE OUT OF THIS? I'M A LITTLE CONFUSED, BUT I STILL THINK THEY EITHER WEREN'T PRACTICING WELL OR LIKE SOME OF YOU SAID IN YOUR COMMENTS, HE WANTS TO LIGHT A FIRE UNDER THEM TO ENSURE THEY PLAY WELL AGAINST DUKE! AGAIN, WOULD LOVE YOUR COMMENTS. I'M GOING HOME NOW. GOOD NIGHT!

According to inside the u, Shields and Hill
are suspended...So we are all confused!!!
The story just got posted this evening.

1st,

Manny, they'll play this Saturday, they probably wont start. That's just RS trying to get them motivated and focused for Duke so that they won't have a major let down following this last big win.

Manny, I think it means THEY DIDN'T PRACTICE WELL. Really now, this Duke we're preparing for. I think we have enough studs to duplicate Duke's offense without SS and RH needing to fill the gaps.

HOWEVER. I'm sure Shannon's message is accurate in that EVERYONE HAS TO DO THEIR PART.

But I wouldn't put it past him to make the point to the rest of the team that anything can happen to anyone if they don't play full-speed, ballz-out every time they step on the field.

Shannon doesn't pull any punches but he never reveals everything. This is the style of a great general/commander, whether it was Hannibal or Stonewall Jackson.

Thanks for the practice report Manny, btw.

I've been reading SMD's columns on the U for as long as I can remember. If she were to be a guest blogger every now and then, that would be great, IMO. Keep up the great work, Manny & Susan.

One cannot argue with anything Randy has done. Players don't get a pass for what they've done in the past, they must bring it everyday. His philosophy will bring Miami football back to national prominence, but more importantly he will ensure the players are prepared for life after football. Great job coach, go Canes.

I believe what coach Shannon said "They played scout team." Just take it for what it is, and don't assume anything till game time.
I have one thing to say though. Why is LL playing special team. He doesn't like to hit or get hit.

My head still hurts . . .
Sorry to confuse you with Manny, Susan, my bad. I don't think it's anything to worry about, that's for sure. After the game at OU, I questioned this staff (privately) but I saw Canes football last Thursday. First time in a long time. And it felt good. Things aren't perfect, but In Randy I Trust. If the players in question are on the scout team, then they're on the scout team. I'm okay with him wanting things kept to himself and the team (even though I know it's the media's job to ask the questions) because that's who Randy is. He's a private guy. That's just this fan's opinion.

According to Nielsen's early statistics, Cane finished second in its time period to the potent Law & Order: SVU, ahead of Boston Legal and Emmy winnner James Spader. Cane's performance was the strongest in the time period for a new CBS series since Judging Amy in 1999." Cane: the brainchild of UM alumnae Cynthia Cidre ...

CSI: Miami + Cane = Miami Hurricanes

I guess since we got slapped on the wrist, there are no more updates from Manny -or so we are told!-

Duh, Randy is pretty clear without painting a picture. He's not happy with SS and Hill. If they were suspended he would say it and cite team rules. He is consistent that if a player doesn't give it all, in practice and in class or makes dumb plays or penalities, there will be consequences. He benched johnson and coop so far, and I'm sure will bench whoever is not on the same page he is. I wouldn't make a big deal about it, if the guys are not "doing it" randy will merely say "who's next"? I like the style.

Its not that serious to get all wrapped up in what Randy is trying to do at practice. Let him coach the team and relax. If you haven't figured him out yet, he likes to get his players attention and I totally understand some things need to stay in house. Randy is all about effort and results, like he said you practice well you play if not you don't play, its that simple. Its what this team needs to stay focused and play hard on the field. It sends a message to the team that you need to always give 100% on and off the field. As far as the scout team he said there is a numbers problem so everyone will have to play, I say leave it at that. Great job coach Shannon. Go Canes!!!!

the gaturd can't compete with U for South Florida recruits explaining oscar's bending over backwards to keep Deonte Thompson ...

I remember even the great Cane's of yore tended to play down to the level of their opponents. That's why it was frustrating to see close scores when we obviously have superior firepower... but I think RS knows overconfidence is a killer at games that we need to win big. These two boys probably was wishy washy at practice and so he laid the wood on them. If he says they are suspended then he can't use them for the game.

I really think it's a low effort punishment and nothing more.

http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=2390 InsideTheU becomes the 6th college website to join ESPN's burgeoning network. why would grassy turn down ESPN?

Yes, attempting to read between the lines it seems clear they have not been practicing well and are in the proverbial doghouse.

For those who continue to doubt the Onion:

A year or so ago, people came out of the woodwork for reasons why Willie Williams was not playing and wanted to leave. Without a shred of knowledge, people blamed Shannon for a variety of reasons. WW, now with Louisville, does not start, and can barely get playing time on one of the worst defensive teams in Div. 1A.

RS knows what he wants in his players, and knows what he's doing. I think Cavaleer has it right-the guys who wont sacrifice Sunday through Friday will sacrifice playing time on Saturday-No matter who they are.

I agree; it doesn't matter. I think the 'Canes will beat Duke even if they don't field any offense at all: just let Duke have the ball for the whole game.

Mephistopheles, add to that, I think WW was just dismissed from school for pot. He was a bad egg and Shannon knew it. Glad he didn't stay around.

i think this is just another in a long list of motivational things shannon is using to get the team past the past so to speak.

this team has had a "do as it pleases"attitude for the last couple years under coker and shannon has to correct this.

i applaude anything shannon does to get the canes back to the top.and making sure that no one is above another is part of it.i think the players respect that and that if they go all out they have a chance to play no matter if they're a 5* or a 3*.

practice hard ,you play.don't you sit.

simple as that...

The rules are fair.
The regulations are fair.
The competitive balance is fair.
High Flying Helicopters...

That's what this circle of words reminds me of. If anyone can make out what Dennis Green was talking about then they should be able to figure out What Shannon is talking about. It doesn't bother me, because I know that he will have both Hill and Shields ready to contribute.
