Good moves, now to the playcalling

Greetings from Dallas. I'm still here out west, covering the big high school game this week when Miami Northwestern travels to Southlake Carroll to play in that No. 1 vs. No. 2 prep matchup.

I'm sorry I didn't give some of you a heads up about not having a live Q&A this week. But I've been a bit busy here in Southlake since I drove back in Sunday. But enough about that, let's talk Canes.

I've got to say I was happy to see coach Randy Shannon deliver on his promise he'd do what was best for the team at all times and make some major changes. He did that Tuesday, making moves to improve his starting lineup.

Here's a quick recap:
- Kyle Wright moves back to the starting role at quarterback.
- Randy Phillips, still sporting OU receiver treadmarks, gets moved from corner to backup safety, the spot he really was meant to play.
- Sam Shields, the team's best receiver, moves back into a starting role.
- The experiment of having a 6-4, 260-pound tight end return kickoffs ends. Richard Gordon goes back to his main duties, blocking. DeMarcus Van Dyke or Shawnbrey McNeal are expected to replace him.
- And Daren Daly, who was attrocius on kickoffs, gets replaced by Francesco Zampogna.

Everything should be perfect now right? Hmm. Not quite. To me, personnel adjustments are just phase one. Look, I'm not an offensive or defensive coordinator. I only play one when I got my PlayStation 2 controller in my hand and John Madden Football or NCAA Football on. Kind of just like most of you. But I don't think it took a rocket scientist to figure out Miami's playcalling this season needs some work.

Did former starter Kirby Freeman ever throw the ball down the middle of the field -- even once while he was in there? No to my memory.
Any of you have an idea why in God's name was Miami's pass defense still playing man-to-man in your face defense -- even after falling behind 14-3 and proving it couldn't handle OU's speedy receivers?
Why was Graig Cooper running sweeps inside the OU 5 and Javarris James not in for the goalline smashmouth situations?
Why was Miami running a no-huddle shotgun offense when it obviously couldn't do anything in it?

To me, the Canes need to go back to basics. When Kyle Wright was in there Saturday and having success, his receivers were doing simple little routes. Darnell Jenkins? Go downfield 10 yards and turn around. Completion! First down! Ryan Hill? Ditto. What a concept! When Miami was running the football successfully, it was Javarris James up the middle, and Graig Cooper following his brigade of blockers on sweeps.

Look, offensive coordinator Patrick Nix and defensive coordinator Tim Walton are young, talented guys. Coach Randy Shannon wouldn't have hired and promoted them if he didn't see something he liked. UM's personnel was obviously were outmatched against OU. They couldn't provide miracles. But they could have made adjustments. There were flaws in Miami's gameplan before the 51-13 loss. 81 passing yards against Marshall? A wide open middle of the field against the Thundering Herd? Surely, Kyle Wright can ought to find ways to get 10-yard completions against FIU this week, right? Surely, Miami's safeties don't have to play in the box nearly every down against FIU, do they?

Just some of my thoughts people. I know many of you have shared the same. Since this is all fun anyway, what did you see as far as playcalling that you'd like to see removed from the playbook? What about what would you like to see Miami do more of? Is there still more personnel moves Miami needs to make? Have some fun. Play coordinator.

welcane...
I never said I wanted Shotgun every down. I just want them to pass, pass, pass against FIU. I don't care if it is playaction out of I-form, or Ace, or whatever. We know we can run against FIU so lets work on the pass. Pass the ball until we can't pass anymore.

Go Canes!!!!!

Here's the skinny. Did OU have better overall talent than UM? Yes. Is it 51-13 better? No. What was the difference? Coaching. UM coaches did not have this team prepared; the game plan... can't tell... Play calling? Mind-dumbing. Adjustments? Equipment mostly. Was it lack of experience by the coaching staff, or something else? Whatever it was, it was disturbing. Very disturbing.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theacc.com) - Tuesday's ACC All Access (9/11 at 6:30 p.m. ET on FSN South and re-airing 9/12 at 10:00 p.m. on SportSouth) marks the first of 39 weekly shows during the 2007-08 school year and the debut show for new ACC All Access host Jenn Hildreth.

How quickly we forget that The U is playing short handed. Larry Coker was handed the Crown Jewels when Butch Davis went off to the NFL. This was a team that had not lost a single game in over two years. A team that most probably would have won 3 strait National Championships had they not been screwed by the BCS computers the 1st time and poor coaching on the 3rd opportunity. It only took Larry Coker just 5 years to destroy the Crown Jewels but he did a really good job at it. As the NFL raped the team for its rich talent pool, Larry did very little to replace it. Then when The U Nation was finally coming down hard on “nice guy” Larry, he fired the heart of the coaching staff to diffuse the blame.

THIS IS STILL WHERE WE ARE TODAY! The U is in recovery.

Randy Shannon has brought in a great coaching staff, but it's going to take 2-3 years to replace the talent. Its college foot ball where u just can’t go out into free agency and bring in new studs. It takes time. So – lets relax and enjoy the ride.

Before we get all over the coaches for bad play calling and poor player positioning, lets remember that we went to Norman with a lousy hand playing against a stacked deck. Let’s not beat up the coaches or the players.

I’m not saying the season is over. I’m just setting realistic expectations. I think we can still compete in the ACC and we have a good chance of finishing on top.

IF you only had a brain ...

(CBS4) When it comes to grillin’ and chillin’ in the parking lot before the big game, Miami and Tampa have made the list of ‘top ten cities for tailgating’. Each of the 31 U.S. cities with an NFL team, plus NFL-hopeful Los Angeles, were visited by so called “tailgating experts” to judge stadium parking lots, the overall tailgating environment, tailgating fan enthusiasm, and sales of tailgating accessories.

TheMyth: You are right about the DB's playing off-that's the book on how defend Miami since Dorsey, but we've made no adjustments. They seemed like they figured that out against Marshall-I guess we'll see.

Who is Miss Direction? Was she a late signee?

As for USF-they take all kinds of academic and character risks-sound familiar? As long as they stay out of trouble, they will continue to get better.

Thank You Rick...

Just a thought, get rid of the option. We ran the option twice in goal line situations. That is a play I thought the U would never run. Secondly, please stop running out of the shotgun formation. We have two great backs and an improved offensive line, let's use it by running out of the I or a similar running formation. After accomplishing that we could establish a pass attack from these formations. I agree we are not utilizing are talented tight ends over the middle enough and no one is respected our receivers. If we improve on these facets on offense we should improve as a team overall.

According to the fans, every time we've lost in the past 3 years it's been because of play calling. Every offensive coordinator we've had since Chud is a bad play caller. Please... it's about talent. It's about execution. Don't you think that even great teams get predictable sometimes? They make up for it with talent. Play calling is not the problem.

Schemes and playing calling are overrated. The dismal offense results from lack of execution. There is no passing game because the QB's and receivers don't execute. ther have been no yards after catch in the two games other then small screens. When the receivers get open ( rare) and do catch the poorly thrown balls ( rarer) they fall down. I am a die hard but am I missing something? maybe Kyle will show somthing he has hidden for the last 5 years, but until then the canes are forced to go mostly on the ground with short, quick passes to the playmaksrs they have Baby J and Coop. Even that is a problem because no-one respects the Miamis deep threat, because they don't seperate and don't make plays.

-I'd simply like to see our athletes being used (offensively and defensively). Coop in the slot and/or taking direct snaps.

-On 3rd and not so managable is when Kirby I think should come in and use his feet (and feet only) to gain something if a first down isn't possible.

-In the redzone or goaline, bring in the Adderly's, Farr's, Gordon's, Farquharson's, and Hankerson's (all at least 6'3" for an advantage on a jump ball).
Basically to try and keep oppsosing D's off balance how Nix did so well @ GT.

-I think the D can put a little bit more pressure on the QB as well.

I don't know, I'm no coach. This is just what I'd LIKE to see....don't know why it can't be done.

If you notice, Olson, who everyone complained about here last year, is the OC at Arizone State. They're doing much better than Miami offensively. This is on the QB's plain and simple. Who says Nix didn't want to throw to the middle of the field? The QB's have to go through the progressions for all the receivers, and if they don't make the right choices, then the offense doesn't move the ball. Kirby didn't throw to the middle of the field much against Marshall either. Wright doesn't go deep well. Put the two together and they might make a good QB.

From HurricaneSports.com

HURRICANES LEAD THE WAY
For the second consecutive season, the University of Miami has the most players on NFL opening day rosters, the NFL announced today. This year, Miami has 46 players on NFL rosters, up from last season's total of 42.

Following are the top 10 colleges with the most players in the NFL:

Ohio State, 44

KEEP DREAMING...PASS ALL OVER FIU....LOL !!!

As far as RUNNING, LATTIMORE GOT 42 YDS ON HIS 1ST CARRY last week, (BUSTED COVERAGE) AFTER THAT WE HELD 'EM IN CHECK.

THE TERPS THREW 25 TIMES FOR 135 YDS AND NO SCORES AGAINST US...We gave them 10 pts in the 4th qrtr on mental errors. THAT WON'T HAPPEN THIS WEEK !!!!

MARYLAND BEAT YOU LAST YEAR AND THEY WOULD STOMP "U" THIS YEAR...

THE CONFIDENCE BY YOUR BELOVED FANS IS NOT SHARED BY YOUR COACHING STAFF. If it was shared by Shannon and company, scUM loses BIG on SATURDAY.

Hey, LANCE...We didn't forget about your sissy sucka punch last year. THEN YOU SCORED ON OUR BACKUPS AFTER THAT. NOT THIS TIME !! ALL EYES ON "U" HOMEY !!!

#9....On everyone's RADAR. Watch out SUCKA.

This is a weak team and I think the coaches know their options are very limited. It's going to be a tough task for them to try to find players to fill all the gaping holes on the offense AND defense. Coker left the closet pretty bare.....especially on offense and the defensive secondary.

Noel Devine = BEAST

pb for OC. Other than that: UM 34, FIU 13.

I would like to see Miami in the I backfield true fullback leading the way very basic. Or, maybe even a single backfield with two of them athletic tight ends who can block and catch.

I think the Shotgun look Nix likes is very viable in the right situation but these players need basic formations to show their potential.

Line it up and run it when all else fails.

I would only use shotgun here and there, not exclusively.

Mostly I Form and Ace sets. More runs up the middle.

Utlize RB's in the passing game via swing passes, screens, etc.

On defense mix in some zone here and there along with blitzes. Maybe disguise coverages, however that's done I don't know. I hope Shannon and co. does though.

I like to utilize the no huddle here and there too, but that doesn't have to be all shotgun either.

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah...let's face it. Miami is just an average football team.
A young second tiered program with ALOT of rebuilding to do.
O line is soft and slow. Our recievers are too small. Lance Leggett thinks he's Randy Moss but is an absolute wuss. And, we have no QB...8-4 this season will be an absolute miracle.

fiudefense: do you realize how ridiculous you sound? we don't care about playing your tier-4 commuter school; fui small potatoes is not our peer. respectfully, you're the gum on the bottom of our lace-up wingtips ... BENEATH U

fiudefense: enjoy saturday. once the contracts expire, the University of Miami will no longer play fiwho ... in any sport. that'll teach ya ...
