UM post-OU lockeroom scene

Just got out of the UM lockerroom after the Canes got thrashed by fifth-ranked Oklahoma 51-13 on national television.

Here's a quick rundown of reaction:

- Quarterback Kirby Freeman declined comment. His quote: "Oh, I'm not talking to the media."
- Quarterback Kyle Wright spoke at length, but would not say if he thinks he should be named the starter next week. "I'll let the coaches decide that." Wright was seen after upbeat and smiling with some family and friends.
- Cornerback Randy Phillips owned up to his bad day after getting beat regularly by OU's receivers. "It was the worst day of my life," he said.
- Javarris James asked not to be interviewed.
- Calais Campbell said Miami will rebound against FIU next week.
- Derrick Morse said "we're just going to have to eat this loss." He said Miami's offensive struggles were mostly due to poor communication.

I'll be back with full audio uploads later tonight. But that's the quick scoop from Norman.

Shannon is a winner...Winner at what...His defenses have been exposed everytime he played a real offense. Jeff Bowden is no longer at FSU so he will probably get exposed against the noles as well. When was the last time Randys defense showed up against a real offense...Louisville...Oklahoma...Dont bring Va Tech into the mix...Their offense was overrated. If Miami plays anyone with an offense, Randy will be exposed again. Has he figured out yet that leaving Randy (I should be playing safety) Phillips is not a good idea. For such a great defensive coach how is it the guy wont make an adjustment to save his life. If not for a bad punt snap and a fumble by OU receiver they could have scored 60 on us.

OKAY FANS !!! I WAS ANGRY 2 BUT WE ARE ALL MEN MATTER IN FACT HURRICANES MEN, DOSENT GET BETTER IN THAT..... LETS PARTY LIKE A ROCKSTAR THIS SAT COMING GAME AGAINST FIU LETS TAILGATE ARE ASSES OFF AND SHOW UP FOR MIAMI AND FIU GAME.... AND SUPPORT THEM!!!! AND BE SOOO LOUD AND CRAZY, WE WILL WIN THE ACC CHIP, 11-1 SEEMS LIKE A TURNAROUND TO ME!

SO YOU SO CALLED CRYBABY FANS JUST GOT IT FIGURE OUT!!! I WILL LIKE TO SEE U COACH A TEAM THAT WENT 7-6, PLAYER MURDER, REPUTATION OF FIGHTING IN GAMES, NOT BEING IN TOP 10 IN RECRUITING FOR PAST 4 YEARS, REMAINING TEAM FROM WHAT COKER MADE, SEE IF U CAN TURNAROUND A TEAM LIKE THAT FROM THE PAST YEAR AND GO UNDEFEATED GET REAL ITS GONNA TAKE TIME , IF U DONT LIKE IT GET HOSE, KICK ROCKS, U FAKE WANNA BE, STILL IN SHANNON I TRUST PANSIES!!!!

CANES FANS WE NEED TO MAN UP GRAB OUR NUTTS IF U HAVE SOME, AND BE A RIDE OR DIE TRUE CANES FAN AND DEFEND OUR TEAM I CANT SEE WHY SOME YALL WIVES PUT UP WITH A BUNCH OF CRYBABIES THATS WHY SHES PROBALLY STAYING AFTER WORK LATE, OR GONE ALL THE TIME TO BE WITH A DIE HARD BRUCE WILLIS TYPE CANES FAN INSTEAD, BUNCH OF CRYBABIES......

REAL MEN WILL CONTINUE TO SHOW SUPPORT BE @ MIAMI'S NEXT HOME GAME!!!! AND IM 1 OF THEM.... STOP CRYING .... THATS A FEMALE TRAIT...

Its not what we wanted but didn't think wouldn't happen. I thought the gameplan was good by the coaches but we just couldn't execute. Kirby and Wright not the answer. Might as well unwrap Marve(lous) so he can at least get some experience.

Ladies and gents, these are kids that we are vicariously living our dreams of the U. They are Us and therefore we have no right to rip them up. Onwards to the next game. It is a long season and there are a lot of discussions and developments to mull over before the coaching crew can turn it around.

These kids will do battle in our honor. We have to keep their backs. They are Us, whether we like it or not.

SAID To SAY THAT OUR CANES GURLS STILL SHOW LOVE AND SUPPORT THAN SOME OF THE MEN I REALLY AGREE WITH heyU........

CANES FANS WE NEED TO MAN UP GRAB OUR NUTTS IF U HAVE SOME, AND BE A RIDE OR DIE TRUE CANES FAN AND DEFEND OUR TEAM I CANT SEE WHY SOME YALL WIVES PUT UP WITH A BUNCH OF CRYBABIES THATS WHY SHES PROBALLY STAYING AFTER WORK LATE, OR GONE ALL THE TIME TO BE WITH A DIE HARD BRUCE WILLIS TYPE CANES FAN INSTEAD, BUNCH OF CRYBABIES......

yes, it's true we should be more supportive to both players and staff, i don't blame the players for today's loss, i blame the lack of vision and lack of proactive adjustments on the offensive side of the gameplan for U.M. I know it's coach randy's first year as well as nix, but just cause the score is 21-13 that does not mean everything was O.K.. At that point in the game we had around 100 total yards. That's not going to cut it, it just seems that they did not trust kirby to throw the ball and were way to determined to run the ball, which is not to bad an idea with James & Coop but at least don't be soooo predictable. the coaches need to realize when it's time to make adjustments instead of just sticking to the game plan. There is still a whole season ahead and anything can happen, it's just hard to see these kids play hard to win and have the game taken from them because of lack of adjustments. when you look @ the overall picture the defense did not play that bad statistically, but when the offense can't stay on the field that means the defense is going to have a long day.

SAME AS LAST YEAR. HUMILIATING!!!!
EMBARAZING...

OUT COACHED... OUT PLAYED...
I AM STILL SICK TO MY STOMACH.

CAN'T PASS CAN'T RUN CAN'T CATCH CAN'T BLOCK
WHY DIDN'T THEY USE JJ ON GOALINE
HE IS THE GUY
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
WE ARE PATHETIC...
ALL THE BLA BLA SECRET OFFENSE
IT STILL SU-KS

BEATING FIU WILL FEEL LIKE BEATING A DEFENSELESS 5 YEAR OLD GIRL....
MAYBE WE WILL SCORE MORE THAN 15 POINTS!!!!

ALCON-
While I agree the game was bad very bad one, I think some/mostall of the thing said about the players is out of line. These kids are out there giving their all everyday whether in the class room of on the field. And all while, the support y'all are giving is to thrash them the next day and call them names. I was, and still a proud of the way the team played, and class displayed and continue to look forward the the Coach Shannon era.
GO CANES!!!

ALCON- It mean... All concerned, sorry I'm still in Iraq.
GO CANES!!!

bottom line is OU is loaded with talent. Might be the best team in the country. it wasnt the coaching (except for taking KW out) its obvious KF cant make the throws at that level. other then that OU was better and deeper at pretty much every position. Be patient we have a great recruiting class coming in, rome wasnt built in a day. Randy will turn it around!

TOO MANY BABIES IN HERE...OU WAS A MUCH, MUCH, MUCH MORE TALENTED TEAM AND THE BETTER TEAM WON...POINT, BLANK, PERIOD...

IF U'RE A REAL CANE FAN, YOU WILL SUPPORT THEM THE REST OF THE YEAR. WHEN WE WIN THE ACC, THESE SAME CRY BABIES WILL BE JUMPING ON THE BAND WAGON AGAIN (FAKE CANE FANS WHAT I CALL EM)...

ONE THING I AGREE WITH ANOTHER BLOGGER WITH IS THAT PHILLIPS NEEDS TO MOVE TO SAFEY...HE CAN NOT COVER AND THIS IS NOT THE 1ST GAME I'VE SEEN THIS...IT HAPPENED LAST YEAR TOO...I BELIEVED THEY PICKED ON DVD ONCE (A FRESHMAN)...OU OBVIOUSLY KNEW WHO TO PICK ON THE MOST AND IT SHOWED...HERE'S OUR STARTING SECONDARY NEXT YEAR:

1. JOHNSON & DVD (OR HARRIS IF HE SIGNS) AT CORNER...FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT AT THAT POSITION.
2. PHILLIPS (IF HE DOESN'T LEAVE FOR THE NFL) & REDDICK AT SAFETY (IF HE CAN STAY HEALTHY NEXT YEAR)...PHILLPS IF HE CAN NOT BECAUSE PHILLIPS CAN STOP THE RUN AND I'M SURE HE CAN AT LEAST COVER A TIGHTEND OR A BACK...

HOWEVER, I'M A CANE TILL THE DAY I DIE WIN OR LOSE...I'M A REALISTIC FAN WHO PLAYED THE GAME...SOME OF YOU DOING THE CRITIZING (LIKE THE MEDIA) PROBABLY NEVER PLAYED A LICK OF FOOTBALL (OR SUCKED AT IT)...MOST IF NOT ALL OF YOU COULD NOT DO BETTER THAN ANY OF THOSE PLAYERS OUT THERE TODAY (EVEN KIRBY FREEMAN)...

A TRU STUDENT OF THE GAME WOULD KNOW THAT OU IS A VERRRRRRRRY TALENTED TEAM AND RANKED #5 FOR A REASON. DA U IS UNRANKED FOR A REASON BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT AS TALENTED. HOWEVER, I THINK THEY ARE TALENTED ENOUGH TO WIN THE ACC (A WEAK CONFERENCE THIS YEAR)...

THIS IS COACH SHANNON'S 2ND GAME AS A HEAD COACH. IT'S FUNNY HOW THOSE SAME FANS WHO WERE PRAISING HIM LAST WEEK TURNED ON HIM THE NEXT BECAUSE HE LOST TO A MUCH MORE TALENTED TEAM...GET A LIFE...I SUPPORT COACH SHANNON EVEN IF WE LOSE 2-3 OR MORE GAMES THIS YEAR, BECAUSE I KNOW YEAR 2-3 WILL BE THE YEAR...WATCH AND SEE...

GO CANES!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v446/Xeroc/UM/emptyOrangeBowl2.jpg despite a ticket dump, fui small potatoes literally draws flies ... OMG

Larry Coker misevaluated talent. IN A NUTSHELL

It was all coaching. We have both the talent and speed to play with Oklahoma. It is Randy Shannons first real headcoaching test and he got his head handed to him, it was Tim Waltons first time as a defensive coordinator in a game where Marshall wasn't on the other side of the ball ever and he got his head handed to him. It was the teams first year actually 2nd game trying to execute a new offense against the 5th rated team in the country in Norman who has played within the same system for at least 5 years.

We're all anxious to get back to the days when we smash pretenders like OU, but we aren't there yet. Give it time those who stick with the canes for a year or 2 will look like prophets and those who don't...Who gives a **** about them anyway, they aren't real fans. Criticism is ok, but calling for firings or lineup changes after one game is just plain ignorant and unrealistic.

Why was Kyle Wright taken out of the game? Freeman stinks!!!! My wife is more accurate than him! The coaches quit...totally.....take Leggett and Jenkins and sit them down...they STINK.
I was asked aout the "Canes" execution yesterday and I replied, "I am in favor of it"

Posted by: Rob Rothstein | September 09, 2007 at 07:44 AM 1) Coach Shannon preserved Kyle's confidence & health; 2) Larry Coker neglected to recruit WRs.

why wasn't Kirby pulled sooner? OBVIOUS

1. Manny should not make that comment about Kyle, family will always try to do their part in cheering on their favorite player.

2. Don't blame Coker... Shannon was defenseive coordinator too and help to recruit a lot of these current players. No one complained when we recruited Kyle Wright or Lance legget.

3. Kyle Wright should start. The man deserve it after his 3rd offensive coordinator. Freeman showed that it's not just the QB that needs to improve, it's the whole offense, along with play calling.

4. We need new kick returners who are more of a threat to take it all the way, Gordon runs hard but will not break any for a TD. Hill just doesn't seem impressive.

5. What happened to using the tight ends in our offense? The offense is too simple and predictable and so is our defense. We can get away with it when the talent is overwhelming, but not when it's even. I highly doubt that OU players are much bigger or faster the UM player... they are simply better coached and ran better plays.

6. K. Phillips had a decent game, he is not much a pass defender but a great run support.

7. Don't blame the loss on R. Phillips. He played tough but got put in pretty bad situations and did not get much help from the safties. He did not give up all the touchdowns to Kelly, DVD had a hand in that too. I'm sure if we had anyone better they would be starting.

8. Be patient... it's unrealistic to expect the cane's to compete with OU after a 7-6 season... we lost 3 first round picks and replaced them with 3 true freshmen... not much of an upgrade.

9. I like what Shannon is doing with the team, but please stop hating on Coker, he is gone and did a good job while he was the coach. Talent alone does not win games, he had to do something right. JJ & Davis both lost some big games that they should have won with the talent they had. That's why the games are played...

10. Shannon is overrated... he is a good coach but still have a lot to learn before we can compete for a national championship.

Coach Nix better learn from this debacle. SCRUTINY

Don't blame Coker... Shannon was defenseive coordinator too and help to recruit a lot of these current players. Posted by: Duzhi | September 09, 2007 at 08:01 AM Larry Coker had final say. BUCK STOPS HERE

replace our kickoff specialist Darren Daly. FIELD POSITION

Randy Phillips: "It was the worst day of my life." Randy disagrees with Duzhi ; )

We should have scheduled Michigan instead of OU for our out of conference game. OU will probably go undefeated and win the Big One. We ran into BUZZ SAW. If first play was sucess whole better outcome. O line was much better. Great fake field goal. Hope they prepare well for FIU. GO CANES

why did U abandon the run? ONE-DIMENSIONAL

why didn't U run between the tackles? INEXCUSABLE

Shields, Hill, Kayne, & Hankerson need more touches. CRITICAL

Sorry Caneluvr. You are right. Yukking it up was the wrong word to use. All I was trying to capture was that he was in a good mood. You could see he was happier because he got a chance to play. You could tell that in his demeanor and from what he told us. So, I went back and changed it.

Was he mad they lost? Sure. But I got the sense he also felt better than he has all fall because he got to play. When I walked out of the lockerroom with the rest of the reporters, it wasn't like he was down like the rest of his teammates. He was smiling and feeling a little better than they were.

We are not as bad as 90% of you are saying...talent wise they where on another level.....Our coaching staff will be fine and we will still have a better record than last year......I can't stand when things go wrong you guys blame everyone and there momma's.....Randy WILL bring the U back to prominance....

hey manny navarro, how did your blog do in august?

I think we now have a better perspective of the team and that is good. I know that everyone is upset about the blow-out we have just experienced but we know were the team is and what needs to be fixed.

Stop blaming and start fixing!! We can blame all day and get nowhere!! The offense is behind everyone elses because of so many changes and maybe too many band-aids. Face it we have subpar quarterbacks but that is what we have and the team has to deal. What good coaches do is make the best of the players they have. The baseball coach from texas says you will not always have the same type of players year in and year out. So as a successful coach he must adjust to the players he gets. Just a thought. Go Canes

Wow Manny. You got TOS boards buzzing with your "yukking it up" comment!

Incredible how all these experts on this blog think they know what happend... Did any of you work with the team all week at practice? Have any of you at the age of 20 go into a 85,000 seat stadium to play against a top 5 team in the country? I dont think so. These guys got beat and that happens especially when you (these bloggers) put into there mind that we are back. We were lucky to make a bowl game last year and you think we are going to be at the level of OU in 9 months? Get real and understand that Randy Shannon is taking steps and when you are learning to walk you always fall down. A good man eventually gets up... A great man gets up right away. It is what it is. The best thing we can hope for this year at Miami is to be in Jacksonville in December. I believe this is exactly what this program needed a good firm answer to where we really are. No if your a true fan you understand that rally around the team and hope they can grow from here. Show up at the games, support the team and have constructive critisim, I remember how most people felt after the blow out at Syracuse. If I remember correct most folks wanted Butch Davis gone only to wish he was hired back this January. Stay the course it could be worse we could be FSU...

One more thing.... Lou Holtz said it best.... " You are never as good as you think you are and never as bad as you think you are." Listen Kyle laughing with Family members is overblown. Should he be sobing because the team is 1-1 and we still have 10 games left....

Idiots.................

I don't know why I do this. Nobody really reads these things. I guess it's just here to vent.
The problem here goes above and beyond Randy Shannon, Larry Coker and the coaching staff.
The problem here squarely lies in the administration. This administration clearly is far more interested in academics than athletics.
Our facilities are a joke. The OB is a joke. Moving the Canes to Dolphin stadium?
Gee, thanks.
There has been no committment at the U for any program since Donna Shalala has arrived. She just needs to move on to her real agenda and run for political office with her friend Hillary.

Stop it Dave. Do not blame this on Donna. She runs the school and lets Paul Dee run athletics. She wants the U to be a great academic institution and why not? Why can't we have both? Do you think FSU does not support football? Do you think Michigan does not support football? Do you think VT does not support football? Notre Dame? Just because you do not agree with Donna's politics does not mean she is to Blame!!!

do you think Randy does not want to succed?

Lets stop blaming and start fixing!!!! Go Canes

To all, this loss was not a result of a huge diparity in talent, nor was it horrible coaching. It was a lack of heart, especially with the play of the upperclassmen, Leggett, Jenkins, and most notably Phillips, both of them. Sure Kenny got alot of tackles, but I didn't see him, or anybody else, get in the face of other players who were not cutting it. They simply did not come to play.

On the QB situation, Kirby looked nervous and flustered; ironically, Kyle, who has shown to have "happy feet" in the past, showed poise & pocket presence. Kirby was put back in & got his chance to redeem himself. He folded & it never happened. Kyle should start from here on out.

On the defense, it was the most diappointing aspect of the game. Misreads, mistackling, & with the exception of Gooden, an opverall grade of "F". How can a non-probation team let the opponent score over 50?

On the coaching, I don't think that Randy did a horrible job. He got in players' faces and looked charged when they converted the turnover into points; however, I will say this: why is he so fast to discount past glory which he was part of? Why discount the rich tradition of dominance before the game? Conversely, Stoops reminded his players of Miami's tradition & pride; subsequently, they put up 51 points on the board. If I were king for a day, I'd show a different UM game from their glory days to show what Miami football is all about.

Bleeding orange & green in Brooklyn

By the way KL FSU won on Saturday. As a a season ticket holder and missing one home game since the and as one who has travel with the team, I consider myself a fan. Watching the OU game yesterday I was disapointed. Disapointed that there were no adjustment made during the entire game. I notice last week that our safties were involved in almost every tackle.
That only showed that the D-line and linebackers were getting handled. Our D-line and line backers were exposed. Our Defefense looked unprepeared, slow, and tired.
Don`t even mention the corners, Phillips.
It seemed like in the third quarter the D. totally gave up.
What ever happen to the adjustments and the play calling. I liked the first play of the game. It kept OU corner back 7-12 yards most of the game. When you have corners laying back 8 12 yard on a 1 on 1 coverage. What happened to the quick outs. This is a gimme of at least 6 yards or a break away for a bigger play play. There should be a non aduble that the QB and the WR knows that this is a quick out. It was painful to watch the lack of coaching adjustments, the lack of prepearation. Holly Molly,If the corners are playing back that far take advantage of it.
What ever happened to the slants, quick out .... Take advantage of one on one coverage coaches. I`mn not impress with Nix, never was when he was at GT.

To all, this loss was not a result of a huge diparity in talent, nor was it horrible coaching. It was a lack of heart Posted by: peach5656 | September 09, 2007 at 10:51 AM hey cardiologist, you diagnosed their "hearts" from afar ; )

Im sure coach Shannon will stop saying that OU's quarterback is no good. It must feel horrible when you have to put your foot in your mouth. Go Soooners

Posted by: dave | September 09, 2007 at 10:13 AM hey schmuck, Donna Shalala is the best thing that's happened to the University of Miami. look no further than tonight's UM/univision presidential debate. be careful what you wish for ...

Da Canes must have been holding back thier offence & defence for FIU. Cuz all that talk about having a suprise for OU, what? Still waiting. OOOHH I see da canes were holding back for the next time OU & UM play! Now thats a good strategy!

Hello Legion,
My, my, my, what a lot of angry band wagon jumpers and fickle fans the U has inherited. Over 1600 post and most of them negative and pointing fingers in every direction. Some of you guys and dolls are insane to leave some of the angry stuff you wrote. If I was a potential recruit and I read this blog I would not want to come here, you guy are brutal (“This is madness!”). I refuse to panic, I refuse to panic , I refuse to panic , I refuse to panic, I refuse to panic, I refuse to panic, I refuse to panic!, I refuse to panic!, It was just one game! TRUE MIAMI FANS will understand this, if you don’t you should look for another team to live vicariously through.
I watched the game and I was shocked that OU dismantle Miami the way they did but then I realized something. I was the one who thought they would go 12-0; I am the one with high expectation for the team that I love more than some of my family members. I can’t blame those young men who I live vicariously though on Saturdays for my disappointment. The blame is mine for wanting Miami to be so good that I thought my faith could will them to be more than just a 1-1 team. Yes, Kenny Phillips lost a lot of money on that field and I know he has a lot of people depending on him.
Yes, I passed out on the coach just to awake from the nightmare and find out it was really true, we are not back yet! The obvious statement on Saturday is we are a few recruiting class from being back. Oklahoma is simply better than the U right now and their coaches have been together longer. I am a half glass full type of guy so I will look at the good that can come out of this. The guys we are recruiting can look at this as an opportunity to come in and start right away because the receivers we have can’t even catch a cold. I don’t think either quarterback is the answer and if we have a few more performances like this one we might has well scrap the season and start the future now with the freshman Quarterback. I don’t see it getting any worst it did on Saturday no matter who is under center. No matter how bad I feel about the loss I know the players and coaches feel worst. When the ABC camera cut to Nix in the booth he had his hand over his face and coach Shannon looked like he couldn’t wait to exit the field.
I am still faithful and a true believer in Coach Shannon, it is his first year as a head coach and I know he is learning a lot about football from a different point of view. He just has to find a way get the players to look forward and not back to last season. When James fumbled and OU scored I knew then that the game was over I could see it on the players face on the side line. Somehow some way until we win a game in the fourth by coming from behind they will always have that look on their faces.
Coach is on the right track by recruiting players from winning programs that are used to winning.
