Canes lose out on Sabino, Howard

Our Barry Jackson is reporting that the two top Miami Dr. Krop High prospects, linebacker Etienne Sabino and cornerback Travis Howard, have decided to cross the University of Miami off their list.

Howard, considered one of the top defensive backs in the state, said he orally committed this afternoon to Ohio State. "The atmosphere, the fan support, everything at Ohio State was awesome," he said. "I considered Miami very hard. But I did not want to be in Florida. I wanted to accomplish new things and meet new people."

Sabino informed UM that he is no longer considering the Hurricanes according to his mentor, Brett Goetz. Sabino, rated the 17th best player in the country by ESPN.com, has now narrowed his choices to Ohio State and USC.

Sorry boys. the next few years you will see a new um team. once we filter the old. Randy is from the school of jimmy. Either join us, or get ready to lose to us!
mark it down boys.

Per Rivals Howard doesn't even have an offer yet!!!!

The Buckeye Nation is excited! Welcome Travis our newest Buckeye.

nature of the recruiting game. Win some lose some. Good luck to them boys.

Recruiting's not about WHO YOU LOSE....

Recruiting is about WHO YOU GET!!

The U will be fine, thanks to talent everywhere in Florida and elsewhere this year.

Then he should look forward to getting his ass kicked by us when we play them up there and then here. He'll be around for that. I liked kicking their asses when I was at UM from guys who thought better of it. That's ok. We have a ton of talent coming in anyway. #1 class so far. He'd likely have to really compete to see the field his first year.

Doc - UM has presently the #4 or #7 ranked class as rated by Scout or Rivals, 10th at ESPN/Scouts Inc.

You are right though about him having to compete to see the field his first year - I expect that will be true in Columbus, just as it would be in Coral Gables.

Uh, Doc Cane,

You don't even have the #1 class in the state of Florida. By the way, it would appear that Ohio State isn't the worst place Howard could go.

#1 in the counrty right now.

It should be expected to lose some recruits along the way. I would much rather take Brandon Harris over Sabino anyways. I've said on these blogs before, so long as we hang onto the Northwestern High guys (Forston, Harris, Spence, Johnson, and Washington) we'll be alright. Besides, recruiting sites are often wayyyyy off when it comes to accurately describing and rating these high school players' skills and abilities. It's the coaching development and surrounding players and staff that can make the difference. Shannon saw something he likes in CJ Odom and Andrew Smith. And based on his first class' success thus far (Cooper, Van Dyke, McNiel, ect), I'm trusting Shannon to chase down and enroll the right kids. Keep the faith guys. Best of luck to them. Make the state of Florida proud regardless.

Sabino would have been a nice pickup but who cares about Howard? 3 star players are a dime a dozen.

I hope Howard has a good time freezing his ass off in Columbus. He should check with the coach to make sure he gets one of those great no pay jobs and signs up for the no attendance classes.

Don't worry, Canes fans. You will see Howard again soon. He will be just another in the long line of 3-star players that become high NFL draftees under Jim Tressel. You take Harris, we take Howard and Sabino, and we'll rendezvous soon enough. Oh yeah, Welcome Travis and Go Bucks.

after ohio state loses in happy valley this wkend, they will probably wavier on their decisions, in typical hs manner.

I would much, MUCH rather have Brandon Harris and Patrick Johnson than TJ Bryant. And that's the way it's looking.

Well, their loss.

Enjoy that snow! You'll be back to thaw out. But seriously, do what you think is best for you. Good luck gentlemen.

Hey 31-24 good thing we had those refs in our pocket. Damn wasn't that great how our ref changed his call three times in 15 seconds from incomplete to pass interference to holding. I almost thought he forgot the deal.

And to the moron who said Tressel will turn Howard into a 1st round draft pick, exactly how many 1st rounders has Tressel produced? Don't bother looking, I'll tell you -- 11. During that same time period, 2001 thru 2007, the Hurricanes have had 24 first rounders. So if any of those Buckeyes really wants to play in the NFL they'll change their minds really fast and head to the school that is the highway to riches -- THE U!!!

I don't beleive those numbers, but even if they are true, OSU has produced more overall draft picks in that same time period than Miami. In two of those years, OSU had two of the highest totals ever taken in a single year in the history of the draft, including the record of 14 in either 03' or 04'

Sabino will be in this recruiting class. Its a long way until Feb and he will sign with the U mark it down.

you are crazy. Those two will play their college ball together @ tOSU or Sabino will head out to the west coast. Neither seems to like your great state of Florida very much. And why play for a team that's going to be lucky to finish .500 when you can play for a champion year in and year out?

To both Eric and sandgk
Tom Luginbill of Scouts Inc. on Espn.com has UM with the #1 recruiting class.

Overall draft picks are meaningless when most of them come in the 4th round or later. The first two rounds are really what matters because that is where the stars go. The numbers Maurice quoted are correct. You can verify them yourself at ESPN. The fact is Miami has placed more than twice as many players as Ohio State in the first two rounds over the past 8 years. I know you don't want to believe it, but you can go check it yourself.

I will be a 6th round draft pick ... mark my word.

When Buckeye fans are posting on the U's blog during our 5-3 season, you know that they already see the writing on the wall. Randy's got the U going in the right direction (even non-OSU haters admit that), he's got the current #1 class according to ESPN, and far from done getting the guys he's targeted. With 6 stud LB's in incoming the class why would we need Sabino? Howard would ride the pine (behind DVD, AJ, Harris, etc.) and he knows it... Bottem line, choker Coker was the best thing to happen to OSU and one of the worst things to happen to the U. But Coker's gone, Randy's on a mission and OSU showed last year what happens when an overrated Bucks team plays a team from FL with a coach.

tOSU is extremely lucky indeed. AND they will play for championships of some type every year (until their caught).
How can they not succeed? Their arch rival loses to Appolinia St. @ home. Then turns around loses (big-time) to a team of ducks.
Michigan then runs the table in the power conference known as the Big 10, and voila-- ranking intact.
The Big(ahem) Ten, has won 32 Out of Conference games--out of those wins, 29 are from non-BSC conference teams. Four wins over Notre Dame, one win over a BCS=PAC 10 team (Washington), and two wins over BCS=Big East power Syracuse.
Losses to teams include the likes of Appalachian St., Duke (1-7), Iowa St. (1-7)
Florida Atlantic, Bowling Green, AND North Dakota St!!!
And to show the Big 10 will play anyone, anywhere...in the state of Illinois... they have 3 of the 4 compass pts. covered--N. Illinois, W. Illinois, and E. Illinois. For good measure they've played Eastern, Western & Central Michigan teams.
Somewhere in the mix is 7 what were formerly called D-IAA teams. LOSING to two of them.
I guess it's no wonder, the Big 10 Commissioner is so vehemently opposed to a play-off system.

Is it just me or should the Herald work on booting all the OSU people? They are the worst.

Now that BC beat VT all we need is for VT to beat Virgnia (probably should happen). UM runs the table the rest of the way and wins the ACC.
And its going to be sweet when we beat the sh!t out of either 1 loss team, South Florida or Ohio State.

Don't hate on recruits because they want to get out of Florida and experience something different or new. Miami isn't for everybody. You also can't deny the fan support that those Big 11 schools get or the fact that most are located in cities where there is nothing to do but worship football players.

If their hearts aren't at the U then bid them good luck and enjoy the winter weather.

Remember how amazing WW17 was supposed to be? He was going to prevent our decline and go straight to the NFL as soon as he could and look what happened. Turns out he never had any impact on anyone. Bubba Franks had 2 scholorship offers: the U and Baylor and 10 years later he's catching TDs in the NFL .

Remember Nate Robinson? He was a 5 star DT out of NJ about 5 years ago and the #1 rated DT coming out of school. He was going to be the next great DT at Miami. He couldn't academically qualify so he went o Rutgers where he did NOTHING.

Good luck Sabino. Entire fat white chicks in the snow and hollendaise sauce on your onion rings.

Signing Day isn't for a few more months. He may not change, he may change. Like Van Dyke last year, like hundreds of other kids will do this year. This is just a verbal commitment. Commitments change like the Top 10 changes now days.

Imagine if the rest of the country couldn't recruit from florida, with out florida recruiting , the colleges around the country will look like high school teams..

WHO CARES ABOUT SABINO HE LOOKS SOFT ANYWAYS...

REMEMBER USC GOT BRIAN CUSHING AND WE GOT COLIN MCCARTHY WHO WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE?

I WOULD TAKE COLIN MCCARTHY ANYDAY!

Ohio State plays nothing but cup cake teams to stay on top, then get waxed when they have to play a real team like Fla. I cant wait till we meet them again because it will be sweet to crack their nuts. By the way your mascot with a nut for a head is really stupid. GO CANES!!!!

Ohio State please play somebody, your conference is soft and slow, and Florida showed that last yr. Sabino we really don't need you we have a great group of LB's and good luck.

What we need is some good O-line help, a couple more D-line commits, a K, and more speed, can't get enough.

U can't get them all, but U can be sure that Shannon will get who we need at the U.

Good luck to them and we will play them soon enough. Preston Parker had to learn the hard way this year: "U play for the U, or U get beat by the U".

It proved true against FSU this year and those days are coming again and on a regular basis. Simple as that.

Since the BCS has been around, the Bucks have more BCS wins than any other team. All those teams cupcakes too? They have one weak year of scheduling and you guys go crazy. You Miami fans are still bitter that you lost in the 03' title game. Why don't you guys try winning some conference games, in your own weak-ass conference, and then maybe you guys will get another shot at us in a meaningful bowl game. The scary thing is, we lost 90% of our offense last year to the NFL, this was supposed to be a rebuilding year, and we're still back at #1. Sucks to be you guys. Good luck with the rebuilding at the "U"

Scott

OSU was overrated last year, and is still overrated this year. Being #1 on October 27th doesn't mean shit. Winning rings is all that matters. OSU is not really very good at winning rings, are they?. One ring since 1970, what a joke for a so-called football powerhouse. And the one ring you have wasn't even earned on the field, you had to have a ref give it to you. So crow all you want, the tide will be turning . Unfortunately for us your sorry ass will no longer be on this blog for us to give you the crap you deserve.

Look at how Shannon is calling these games. Win or lose, he's a Jimmy Johnson diciple. Jimmy lost 5 games and got blown out in a bowl game by Tennessee before making the Canes the team of the 90's.

They'll be back on top within 3 years.

YO GREEN, THE TURDS GOT FLUSHED AGAIN, SO DID THE SA FLA BULLSHITERS! WE ALREADY BEAT THE CRIMINOLES AND UCF, FLA ATL AND FIWHO ARE OBSOLETE WHICH MEANS WE ARE ON OUR WAY BACK TO RUNNING THE STATE LIKE WE SPOSE 2!

even when the u is unraked they still

Does anyone else realize that the combination of V-Tech's loss to BC and NC State's win over Virginia means that the Canes control their own destiny in the ACC?

Erase the shame of the loss to OU by running the table, winning the ACC, and knocking BC out of contnetion. I doubt ANY recruits will turn us down if that happens...

The overrated state university? You can play for a national title every year if you like because you have a p*ssy ass league that you run over and then you run into REAL teams like Florida, LSU, USC, Oklahoma and Miami the real powers of college football that play tough schedules not high school teams.

Who are the top players in the NFL, Hester, Portis, Mcgahee, Gore, Johnson, Shockey, Taylor,Reed, Wilfork, James, Wayne to name the all pros among countless others.

You got a tainted title and 1 thats ONE in 34 years. You will not get another unless

Florida State
Miami
USC
Oklahoma
Florida
Texas
LSU

all decide to drop their football programs entirely. Enjoy that one national title that was a gift to you and take your sweater vest coach and go commit suicide. FYI Ohio has the highest suicidal rate in the country.

GATORS are a one man team....

and they can't win for long on that strategy...

For next year, Coach Shannon, send the crazy dogs after his a$$ and knock him cold, and Canes win big....

how 'bout them gaturds : ) hahahaha ... my sides hurt ... hahahaha ... my sides hurt ... hahahaha ... my sides hurt ...

mommy, can tim teblow still win the heisman ...

mommy, can the gaturd still win the national championship ...
