Game day blog: Carolina 33, UM 27 (F)

l've had beer, chips and my TV set tuned into ESPN2 from my living room. I watched the Canes take on former coach Butch Davis and the Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. We shared our thoughts  and I kept track of some notes as the game went on.

FOURTH QUARTER
- UNC finds itself back in Miami territory when UM cornerback Bruce Johnson falls down on coverage on a short pass and Brandon Tate runs past the Miami defense -- despite losing his shoe -- all the way to UM 27. UNC settles for a field goa, making 30-20 with 14:12 left to play.
- Can the Canes keep their momentum going now? The offensed has to come through again now.
- Big third down conversion on 3rd and 15. Wright finds Sam Shields over the middle for a first down. But shortly after, Wright throws his third interception of the game when he forces the ball in. UNC takes over at its 41.
- Well, UM's defense limits the damage and holds UNC to another Conner Barth field goal, his fourth of the game. With 10:55 left to play, Miami trails 33-20.
- Miami is moving the football on the ground, peppering UNC with Graig Cooper and Javarris James. Can the Hurricanes score?
- Big fourth down with 6:47 left to play deep inside UNC territory. Wright keeps it and gets the first down. Canes fans can breathe a momentary sigh of relief.
- And it lasts just a moment. Another bad decision and bad throw by Kyle Wright. Four interceptions for Wright. It looks like it just isn't meant to be for Miami. 6:15 left to play.
- It's not over yet. Graig Cooper flips the ball to Darnell Jenkins on a punt return, the Canes build a wall and Miami moves the ball to the UNC 11 with 2:59 to play. Miami eventually scores on a Javarris James' plunge with 1:17 left to play in the game. But the Canes had to blow two time outs inside the 5. Now, they need an onside kick.
- Hakeem Nicks recovers the onside kick for UNC. The Canes are going to go down in UNC again. But at least, they battled back and made a game of it. They just couldn't overcome a terrible first half.

THIRD QUARTER
- Wow. What was that? With 12:38 to go in the first half, a different UM team comes out of the break and marches right down the field and scores a touchdown on a 1-yard Kyle Wright sneak to make it 27-7.
- The Rock was at UM this week. Anybody smell a comeback?
- On UNC's first drive of the second half, the Canes force a fumble on the their third play. Kenny Phillips forces it. Spencer Adkins recovers. Miami has the ball at UNC 30.
- Miami capitalizes when Wright connects with Sam Shields on a 4-yard, fourth down touchdown pass. Francesco Zampogna, though, misses the extra point when he hits the upright. But so far, the Canes have shown some life. It's 27-13 now.
- It was announced on TV by the way that McCarthy and Dixon will not return from their injuries today.
- Change the quarterback! This team stinks! Where are you now pessimistic Canes fans? Kyle Wright connects with Darnell Jenkins on a 97-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-20 with 4:22 left in the third quarter. Wright tried it first with Shields, but overthrew him. The second longest play in UM history has the Canes right back in the game. Wow!
- The Canes get the ball back, but on third down, Wright gets sacked. Miami ends up punting and UNC gets the ball back. The pressure is now once again on Miami's defense.

SECOND QUARTER

- Canes have put themselves in a much deeper hole after having a punt blocked inside their own 20. Yates scores on a 1-yard sneak with 11:25 left to put Carolina up 20-0.
- Both Antonio Dixon and Colin McCarthy were injured in the last series. Dixon had to be helped off the field and appears to have suffered a serious knee injury.
- The nightmare continues. After Kyle Wright and the offense struggle to pick up a first down again, UNC takes over and scores again. Brandon Tate on a 55-yard reverse makes it 27-0 with 9:59 left in the first half. Is it time to fire up the buses? Already?
- What I wouldn't do to be a fly on the wall in the Canes locker room right now. UM has been outgained 279-113.
- Kyle Wright has thrown two interceptions and has looked like the old Kyle Wright. Everything has gone wrong.

FIRST QUARTER
- After the teams exchange punts, Carolina draws first blood when Anthony Elzy gashes the Miami defense on a long touchdown run with 10:33 left in the first quarter.
- With 4:33 left in the first quarter, Conner Barth connects on his 16th straight field goal, a 33-yarder, to put Carolina up 10-0. On the drive, Calais Campbell was flagged for a phantom roughing the passer penalty. Replays showed Campbell never hit quarterback T.J. Yates. Amazing!
- Miami responds by moving the ball downfield after Ryan Hill gives them a real nice return out to midfield. But the drive fizzles and Francesco Zampogna misses a 32-yard field goal with 2:15 left.
- The hits keep on coming for Carolina. After another long passing play moves the ball into Miami territory, Conner Barth -- that guy again -- connects on a season-long 51-yard field goal to put Carolina up 13-0.
- This just in: The Canes are in trouble.

we need a quarterback and NC is running the same running play .

Atta boy KW...
Just hand them the freaking game. Say good night now folks....

4 interceptions isn't killing us???? Come on Manny, stop drinking the Kool Aid

Hate to break it to you guys, but Freeman isn't any better than Wright. And there is nobody else.

Heck of a play by the way by Kenny Phillips. He's made a ton of plays for the Canes.

ARRGG I actually turned the game back on as my kids called me : ( only to see this same old crap ... shame the quarterback U doesnt even have 1 : (

Another turnover at the most critical time of the game. You can't win ball games without a QB and an offensive coordinator..Mia has neither!!!

that was pathetic!

Did you read what I wrote. I said the power sweep was killing Miami, but not as much as Kyle Wright is killing Miami. Read it dude!

Kirby Freeman is worse that KW. Face the facts folks...we're going nowhere this year. We can't play Marve...we stuck with these two losers. Where's KW's dad now?

Things I can accept: playing hard, with heart, and coming short. On that note, at least the bad ref. call wasn't that much of a factor.

Things I can't accept: a senior quarterback making bone headed mistakes. It is beyond a reasonable doubt that this guy is a terrible quarterback. His head, his mind, his confidence is damaged goods.

At least Berlin made comebacks happen.

While Kirby may not be much better it is time we at least give a consistent chance to play. Kyle "Ain't" Wright has had 3 years to develop. Obviously, he is not the real deal. Hopefully he got an education out of his UM experience.

That's true, but I think kirby, actually, is worse than Kyle. I just hope Marve steps it up next year. that's our only hope for this program.

Sorry Manny, periods and commas, periods and commas!

DARNELL JENKINS

Can someone please explain why Walton waited for NC to pick up a first down and burned 3 minutes before he called a blitz.

You down 13 with 6 minutes left, what does he have to lose if blitzes 3 times to make a play.

Shannon has his work cut out for him. Between the poor QB play and questionable play calling on both sides of the ball.

If Miami had another QB trust me they would play him. After the OU game I cannot imaine Kirby getting the starting nod. Is it just me or does the head referee look drunk. KW is so sad!

Once again, the Canes DO NOT cover the spread on the road. They are pathetic. Take my adice...(I'm not using it) ALWAYS take the points when Miami is favored on the road. ALWAYS. Wayne Allen Root got nuttin on me...

old Kyle sack

how many completions to miami receivers did wrong have. more to the blue shirts i think. maybe hes color blind like vinny.

The best option is either to use Freeman and run the option or spread or use Marve. Wright is terrible. He is a 5th year senior and still can't read defenses. He holds the ball too long. He under throws and over throws his receivers. He is not a leader. Absolutely everything has to be perfect for him to succeed.

Looked good there for while in the 2nd half but then UM woke up to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

this is pitiful. i think they dance better than the coaches give them credit for

We need a big back...where's Tyrone Moss when you need him?

By the way, Butch Davis was never a consideration due to the way he left UM hanging when he left. Bitter feelings

The truth is that Shannon is playing with an empty deck: he doesn't have a consistent quaterback. I agree that after watching Kirby play against OU, he is f#cking terrible. I say play Kyle. Then Kirby will suck it up next fall and Marve will start.

I've been told by several people that had Robert Marve not been injured, he would have likely been the quarterback after the OU game.

He's not practicing. But after practice, I've seen him on various occassions throwing extra balls when the team is long gone off the field.

Marve is a great quarterback. He's small. Doesn't physically look one. But I've seen him in person and he has an unbelievable touch on the ball. He will be the starter next season in my mind.

I agree, Wright is terrible. Unfortunately, Freeman is worse. Hopefully, whenever Marve comes back from injury, he can step in and pick it up quickly. We don't need a great QB with the running game that we have. We just need a smart QB who can protect the ball. I also agree with an earlier post: the Canes and Fins have been mirroring each other for several years now.

27-33

I met him once...Butch Davis in Cleveland..what a prick.

19 e mails alrdy laughing about the canes today it really sucks being a canes fan these last few yrs : (

onside kick fails ... game over

as the clock ticks down, how come the canes arent dancing. reality sets in, um is not even mediocre. texas a&m must be really bad,

I have a prediction. UNC 33-27...

Well there you have it...a disgusting loss. Credit Wright for piss poor decisions (as usual) and a defense that refuses to tackle.

With the remaing schedule it just doesn't look possible to see one more win.

Thanks again Kyle...the check's in the mail...

Kyle Wright is a DOUCHE!!

we went down fighting ... PROUD

It sucks that we lose this, no doubt. However, RS proved with his halftime speech & adjustments, that this is his program. KW killed us. With Marve or Jacory at QB next season, the future looks bright. RS will bring in his players and they will not come out of the gate with NO HEART! We play 4 quarters of heart and we win by 20+.

By the way, our f*ckin kicker hits his 36 yarder and that b*lls*t roughing the passer call should have been 3 instead of 7, we win by 1. Oh well. Go Canes!

Look for Shannon to sugar coat this loss with comments like "we never gave up", "we were just a few breaks from winning this one", "we are going to learn from this one and get better" and other similar lines that losers must learn to recite. I am sorry, when your team fails to show up and play with any kind of intensity for an entire half and then think it can pull it out when it has to, then you have trouble. That barely worked with Duke last week and it didn't work with Carolina. If your team needs to be inspired or psyched or whatever you call it, then you are simply not a disciplined team.

At least Donna's happy. You want mediocrity? You got it... Dyke.

agreed dcane , they are pretty horrid , but the fact stands that the difference between us winning and losing is a totaly Sh-tty Qback , what ever rock these guys crawled out from I wish they would crawl back , in the stat alone their is 5 colleges with better QBs what a sad day...

I AM EMBARRASSED TO BE A CANES FAN!!!!!

Somebody mentioned in one post that Butch Davis was not even approached for the Miami job....well their right. If you were a booster back then, he was NOT wanted and you know what....the feelings haven't changed. They guys a real dick head!! He belongs where he is.

If only they didn't play the first half.

I was loving the fact that NC players/fan were doing U sign going downwards. That's a sign people. We lost to 1-4 team.

Didn't Shannon say practice was good this week. NO EXCUSES!!

remember the last year the dolphins had in the ob. monday night against the bears. the LAST significant win for the fish. now they have a new stadium the last year for um in the ob, texas A&M, great win looks like it could be that last memory for a program without any identity. coaching not like it should be. players not stepping up. how long will the new AD at um wait.

I am not a canes fan, but reading this blog I think the "canes fans" dd not notice one big thing, that even though they lost they showed a lot of fight and they did not give up, "canes fans" should be proud of that.

But I am glad they lost,

TO NORTH CAROLINA?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

yeah the roughing the passer sucked, would have made UNC punt on a drive they scored on. Would be nice to have a kicker that doesnt give you heart attacks on XP. If kyle wright didnt suck it would be interesting to see how the game wouldve turned out
