Game day blog: Carolina 33, UM 27 (F)

l've had beer, chips and my TV set tuned into ESPN2 from my living room. I watched the Canes take on former coach Butch Davis and the Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. We shared our thoughts  and I kept track of some notes as the game went on.

FOURTH QUARTER
- UNC finds itself back in Miami territory when UM cornerback Bruce Johnson falls down on coverage on a short pass and Brandon Tate runs past the Miami defense -- despite losing his shoe -- all the way to UM 27. UNC settles for a field goa, making 30-20 with 14:12 left to play.
- Can the Canes keep their momentum going now? The offensed has to come through again now.
- Big third down conversion on 3rd and 15. Wright finds Sam Shields over the middle for a first down. But shortly after, Wright throws his third interception of the game when he forces the ball in. UNC takes over at its 41.
- Well, UM's defense limits the damage and holds UNC to another Conner Barth field goal, his fourth of the game. With 10:55 left to play, Miami trails 33-20.
- Miami is moving the football on the ground, peppering UNC with Graig Cooper and Javarris James. Can the Hurricanes score?
- Big fourth down with 6:47 left to play deep inside UNC territory. Wright keeps it and gets the first down. Canes fans can breathe a momentary sigh of relief.
- And it lasts just a moment. Another bad decision and bad throw by Kyle Wright. Four interceptions for Wright. It looks like it just isn't meant to be for Miami. 6:15 left to play.
- It's not over yet. Graig Cooper flips the ball to Darnell Jenkins on a punt return, the Canes build a wall and Miami moves the ball to the UNC 11 with 2:59 to play. Miami eventually scores on a Javarris James' plunge with 1:17 left to play in the game. But the Canes had to blow two time outs inside the 5. Now, they need an onside kick.
- Hakeem Nicks recovers the onside kick for UNC. The Canes are going to go down in UNC again. But at least, they battled back and made a game of it. They just couldn't overcome a terrible first half.

THIRD QUARTER
- Wow. What was that? With 12:38 to go in the first half, a different UM team comes out of the break and marches right down the field and scores a touchdown on a 1-yard Kyle Wright sneak to make it 27-7.
- The Rock was at UM this week. Anybody smell a comeback?
- On UNC's first drive of the second half, the Canes force a fumble on the their third play. Kenny Phillips forces it. Spencer Adkins recovers. Miami has the ball at UNC 30.
- Miami capitalizes when Wright connects with Sam Shields on a 4-yard, fourth down touchdown pass. Francesco Zampogna, though, misses the extra point when he hits the upright. But so far, the Canes have shown some life. It's 27-13 now.
- It was announced on TV by the way that McCarthy and Dixon will not return from their injuries today.
- Change the quarterback! This team stinks! Where are you now pessimistic Canes fans? Kyle Wright connects with Darnell Jenkins on a 97-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-20 with 4:22 left in the third quarter. Wright tried it first with Shields, but overthrew him. The second longest play in UM history has the Canes right back in the game. Wow!
- The Canes get the ball back, but on third down, Wright gets sacked. Miami ends up punting and UNC gets the ball back. The pressure is now once again on Miami's defense.

SECOND QUARTER

- Canes have put themselves in a much deeper hole after having a punt blocked inside their own 20. Yates scores on a 1-yard sneak with 11:25 left to put Carolina up 20-0.
- Both Antonio Dixon and Colin McCarthy were injured in the last series. Dixon had to be helped off the field and appears to have suffered a serious knee injury.
- The nightmare continues. After Kyle Wright and the offense struggle to pick up a first down again, UNC takes over and scores again. Brandon Tate on a 55-yard reverse makes it 27-0 with 9:59 left in the first half. Is it time to fire up the buses? Already?
- What I wouldn't do to be a fly on the wall in the Canes locker room right now. UM has been outgained 279-113.
- Kyle Wright has thrown two interceptions and has looked like the old Kyle Wright. Everything has gone wrong.

FIRST QUARTER
- After the teams exchange punts, Carolina draws first blood when Anthony Elzy gashes the Miami defense on a long touchdown run with 10:33 left in the first quarter.
- With 4:33 left in the first quarter, Conner Barth connects on his 16th straight field goal, a 33-yarder, to put Carolina up 10-0. On the drive, Calais Campbell was flagged for a phantom roughing the passer penalty. Replays showed Campbell never hit quarterback T.J. Yates. Amazing!
- Miami responds by moving the ball downfield after Ryan Hill gives them a real nice return out to midfield. But the drive fizzles and Francesco Zampogna misses a 32-yard field goal with 2:15 left.
- The hits keep on coming for Carolina. After another long passing play moves the ball into Miami territory, Conner Barth -- that guy again -- connects on a season-long 51-yard field goal to put Carolina up 13-0.
- This just in: The Canes are in trouble.

Just an average football team...nothing more than that fellas...Oh well, we'll get um next week....Uhhh...errr...4-3, 4-4, 4-5,
4-6, 4-7...OUT.
Can you imagine what somebody like Ohio State, LSU or USC would do to this team?

Can someone please tell me why we're stuck with Wright and Freeman, and NO other scholarship QB's on this team????? Randy Shannon is a MORON for not addressing that! What a collective bunch of LOSERS!!!!!!

Why in the hell didn't we bring Butch back?!?!?! Dee and Shalala are FOOLS!!!!!!!

USF is better than you guys...admit it!!

Some of you wanted to play them this year. Obviously their going to BCS game and Canes are going to INSIGHT BOWL GAME.

Good luck the rest of the year. You should have hired Butch Davis.

If kyle wright didnt suck it would be interesting to see how the game wouldve turned out.... BUT HE DID, he has been overrated since he stepped foot on campus.

Let's just hope this does not influence that incoming class of 2008. We can definitely use, and the fans will most certainly appreciate, their help.

there is nothing to be proud of in loseing, and you can not sugar coat a half a football game effort , they lost it and it was a game to a sub par team at best, falling short has become all to regular at The U and lack luster effort is never acceptable , I just hope the new blood next year comes in and give a much needed transfusion of heart and guts as this team has the softness of coach coker, weak and full of excuses, and that doesnt win championships......

Kyle Wright is probably a great Human Being, but he "sucks" as a quarterback...Man the decision this guy makes..He just throws the ball with hope and not confidence..If I were Shannon, I would bring Marve in for the rest of the season and take my losses in an effort to develop the QB of the future...This is rediculous..This guy has a losing mentality..then after a turnover goes to the bench like a little sissy girl..Four interceptions! That's unnacceptable.

I am impressed with Randy, especially the way they came out of the half. That would have never happened last year. I actually felt like we had a chance to win this one, but they will not win on the road until they can prove to themselves that they are a good team.

Pros:
1.Greg Cooper (this guy is going to be a star)
2. Defense picked it up, only gave up 2 FG's in the second half (1 off of a turn over)
3. Coaching adjustments at the half.
4. No stupid dancing in the second half (I bet RS gave them an earful about that)

Cons:
1.Overall game plan
2. KW under pressure
3. The entier 1st half
4. Javaris is either really overrated, or does not execute well.
5. missed tackles

This will be a good team, just not yet. Expect a couple of upset wins, but I doubt we beat FSU this year. I bet they beat GT next week because they want to win it for Nix. However, GT will come to play.

What do you think Manny, how does the locker room feel after the game?

oldcane, this is dcane, 40 years of going to ob. this hurts bad. as far as discipline, you dont have to make a bunch of stupid rules and take the names off the shirts, you just have to BE THE MAN. butches guys looked much more disciplined, not dancing down 20-0. randy just needs to be the coach, not the parent. if he works them and they succeed, they will act like men. butch is one of college footballs premier coaches, he made the canes win with class and unc will be a force in the acc in the future. HELP WANTED, QB WITH ABILITY TO HIT OWN PLAYERS

This team has mediocre talent .We have young guys coming that will change that.We are 2 years from coming back.
Cokers recruiting damage still affects us. When Coker fired all the coordinators he couldnt recruit and that set us back 2 classes.
Make no mistake the canes will be back just not this year.

This is the worst Miami team I've ever seen..and that includes last year's lousy 7-6 bunch and all the miserable, awful teams of the '60's and'70's. I wish we had Davis back. Dee could have brought him in before the end of last season, but NOOOOOOOOOOO! He had to wait until the bitter end with Coker and deprive us of a coach who would have gotten things turned around. Coach Davis can win with marginal players. A greenhorn like Randy cannot. We will be Davis' whipping boys for a long, long time to come.

This team, and its coaches utterly suck. Maybe it's just as well we are leaving the Orange Bowl. She deserves to die a dignified death, and not get stunk up by these honkers!

I finally have realized this program is NOT coming back for a long, long time...if ever.

NO HARD FEELINGS FOR KYLE WRIGHT BUT!....I CANT WAIT UNTIL HE GRADUATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI AND LEAVES!!!!

I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL UM FANS TO HIS GRADUATION AND WELCOME HIM TO THE CORPORATE WORLD. THERE ARE SOME THINGS HE DOES THAT MAKE YOU THINK IF HE IS MENTALLY STABLE!

YEAH WELL, USF MAY BE BETTER RIGHT NOW, BUT THEY HAVEN'T WON ANYTHING YET. PUT THE RING ON FIRST B4 YOU START TALKKING SMACK THERE GUMP.

LET THE GAME AND THE DECISION NOT TO HIRE HURRICANE BUTCH SPEAK FOR ITSELF. AS LONG AS A WOMAN AND A FAT SLOB ARE RUNNING THE SHOW, THEY MIGHT AS WELL TAKE THE "U" OFF THE UNIFORMS AS WELL AS THEIR NAMES!! LOVE SHANNON!! GREAT DEF. COORD. AND RECRUITER!! BUT HE GOT EDUCATED TODAY BY THE MAN WHO SHOULD BE OUR HEAD COACH!!

Need better play from Quarterback position,he should be making better choices with the ball and go through his progression. And the Def. Cord need to get out of that basic defense and blitz some.

FRANK,

That's the problem with you Canes fans!! You're all living in the past. Robert Marve isn't the answer at QB. Once you get back to the days of QB U...you'll be mediocre.

Just admit USF is better than you this year and probably the next 3 years.

What are the chances of having Wright and Freeman go down for the season in the same game?!?!?!?! Listening Georgia Tech????

BTW, what happened to running the direct snap to Cooper or James?

NO HARD FEELINGS FOR KYLE WRIGHT BUT!....I CANT WAIT UNTIL HE GRADUATES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI AND LEAVES!!!!

I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL UM FANS TO HIS GRADUATION AND WELCOME HIM TO THE CORPORATE WORLD. THERE ARE SOME THINGS HE DOES THAT MAKE YOU THINK IF HE IS MENTALLY STABLE!

Hey Dcane 40 plus years here too , I now live up in tampa and have to put up with so much of this USF crap , but truth is truth and your Wanted sign for a QB is here , we have marve and harris , they just cant play yet , I have watched both of them play and they both make WAY better decisions than our present QBs , and they both are winners at heart . unfortunately we will have to live another year in wait and deal with the comments until the canes get the needed help from our future recruits. I love my canes and will always fly thier colors , and I just Pray to God that our new recruits come in and help this team learn 1 thing ,--- How to Win--- because The U has forgotten how to.

Guess what guys, Butch is NOT coming back. He took the NC job W/OUT even visiting the campus, saying it was the premier job in the country.

Shannon is our man! He will bring in a good QB, players who want to be here and we will be a factor in the polls again next year, but not this year.

But I agree, dump the tub and hope hillary takes our prez with her!

Hey HatetheU.....take a flying leep, you're obviously a bandwaggon rider huh, you moron.

Right now, Butch Davis is laughing his ass off. "I just did you Paul Dee." How's that taste you big bag of sh*t?" Get the f**k out. Thank God this fat, pathetic slob is gone after this year. Can we get someone who cares more about our athletic programs instead of where his next meal is coming from? Frickin worm.

Guys we can blame Kyle all we want, Kyle didn't lose by himself, it was the whole team that lost, ALL OF THEM DID, and all are responsible. The big thing is this, WE CAN'T SPOT ANY TEAM 27 points! WE AREN'T LSU or USC that have that kind of explosive offense, our strength is running the ball, not chucking it around. Because of that, we have to play very good D, and the OLine has to own, but that didn't happen. We got owned up front on both sides. Marvin Austin dug into D-Mo more times than not, he made some mistakes, but we are talking about a Senior against a true Freshman and I think Austin won. The also had more speed than I think we anticipated. #87 is a player for them! But all in all, we lost because we came out so flat in the first half, if we play in th 1st half with the energy we had in the 2nd we win! Now, positives...#1, we didn't quit. That is directly attributed to Shannon. He probably totally lit into them at half time. #2, Darnell Jenkins is a player and leaves it ALL on the field, just like a Senior should. Our starters at WR should be Jenkins and Shields. Leggett just doesn't have it consistently. #3, Randy should dawn the head sets more often and groom Tim Walton and help him in his transistion to DC. I know RS says communication is an issue, but its in issue because players don't know where they are supposed to be. Lastly, #4, Kyle has to learn to let a play go if its not there. I know throw the ball away and live another play, don't force it and come away in the red zone with ZILCH!

Well I feel better than I did at half time, but I'm still very disappointed in the team as a whole, they are better than they showed, they have to learn to bring IT EVERY GAME, no matter who the opponent, they mut think they are the '01 team or something, they need a reality check to say, hey...Ed Reed ain't coming through that door, neither is Dorsey, you aren't THAT MIAMI, so you HAVE TO PLAY HARD EVERY SINGLE DOWN.

I'm through.

We should bring The Rock in as AD, instead of The Blob!

CaneManiac,

The truth hurts! The U needs to recruit premier QB, but problem is they are headed to USC,Texas, etc. ThugU used to be QB U.

Another thing, the arrogance is catching up to you guys.

Any chance Dane Prewitt or Carlos Huerta has any eligibility left?

In the words of Mike Gundy, "makes me wanna puke."
Then there's Urban Meyer, "Losing sucks."

Hey HatetheU you are a stupid as you are rude , this state has some darn good QBs the canes got what our past coach thought would be good , and some HS QBs just never pan out in college , but to think just USC and LSU and Texas get all the QBs shows your ignorance , because if tebow ( yes a florida QB or Grothe a USF florida QB was here and recruited here we could be contenders , but our Cali QB has never lived up to his hype and kirby has always been weak in arm and head , so it isnt them going to other schools , it was a recruiter grabbing the wrong talent..... patience will show The U back on top and haters like yourself will be able to eat all the crap you been shoveling..

You know what really sucks? Is that I'm actually getting used to this. Losing is not such a big deal anymore. It's like...Oh, well, another underachieving bunch of over rated thugs...7-6 last year. Probably 7-6 this year too.
If you think Harris and his crew are going to come in here and light this program up again, you're sadly mistaken. They had more off field problems than the Bengals.

Wow I really thought Miami would piss one out up until about the 7 min mark. Its not the amount of INTs that upset me but the when you don't throw picks on 1st down. You certainly don't throw picks on 1st down inside the opponent's 10. That last pick was of the "Berlin" variety. I was very pleased though that RS kept Freeman on the bench and stuck with one guy.

I do hope that those who didn't think that Dorsey was anything special at Miami are quick to change their minds. At any time when he was at the reigns no one on his team or spectating didn't think he'd come out without getting the W. God bless Ken Dorsey.

Do not put this game entirely on Wright though, the D was very soft and picked apart in the first half. And man does UNC have a money kicker and talented punter.

Maybe Kyle should try sporting a mohawk.

Oldcane,

I used "etc.".You just proved my point, I forgot to include Florida. If my son was star HS recruit...i would want him to play elsewhere than play QB position at UM. Just ask Kyle Wright's dad if he would recommend a QB play at UM.

I'm not being rude...just being realistic. Sorry you feel that way.

Harris and Marve won't solve QB problem. Finally, UM is not getting top-notch O-lineman like McKinnie,J.Gonzalez,Romberg,Leon Searcy. That's another problem they need to address. Peace out losers

Please, please, just let FSU and UF get waxed today so I don't have to listen to those honks.

HO MY!!!
UF 24
LSU 16

And that's from a Gator Hater...
Here's the UF play book...
Tebow up the middle. Tebow to the right, Tebow to the left.
Hail Mary to Harvin,
Reverse to Harvin.

Ok, all you fags...time to go...I'm tired of filling in the verification box.
We'll get em next week.
GT 27
UM 13

Frank, you obviously know your stuff.
Take the points as LSU is a 9 pt fav.
UF wins this game outright tonight.
Last time UF lost two games back to back...
Galen Hall was the head coach.

Hey, where'd everybody go? I wanna bitch somemore. Isn't that what this blog is for?
Does anybody read anything but their own posts?

There's nothing left to say. We all know what has to happen. Kyle needs to graduate. We need new blood at quaterback and other positions. And maybe in a few years, we will be a top 25 team.

What you saw today was a demonstration of how a well coached team will always beat a poorly coached team. You guys can blame the players all you want to. This team makes the same mistakes, and shows the same weaknesses every game. They played awful for 50 game minutes out of 60 and still almost won the game. That is not a lack of talent, its a lack of preparation. Every game, UM has made mistakes in the passing game and been completely inept at pass defense. And there has been no improvement in either area for almost 2 seasons now.

U GUYS NEED TO STOP FREAKING OUT. THE HURRICANES CAN STILL WIN THE ACC. WE LOST 6 GAMES LAST YEAR, WE JUST NEED TO IMPROVE. RANDY KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. JUST LOOK AT THE RECRUITS HE IS GETTING. COKER NEVER COULD DO THAT.

U GUYS ARE PUSSIES JUST TAKE UR MEDICNE AND SHUT-UP. WE WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK TO KICK GT BUT.

ALL U BANDWAGON JUMPIN FAKE HURRICANE FANS OUT THERE HOW ABOUT COMMENDING THE EFFORT THEY PUT IN TO ONLY ALLOW 2 FIELD GOALS IN THE SECOND HALF. I SEE NO ONE LIKES TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE OFFENSE FOR TRYING WHERE THEY WOULD QUIT LAST YEAR. rANDY SHANNON IS DOING A GREAT JOB AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE FUTURE. TRUE CANE FAN 4 LIFE NEVER BANDWAGON JUMPIN.

Another bad loss to a bad team on the road. For whatever the reason, these guys just can't get up for road games. I'm giving Shannon the benefit the doubt, but this loss is on him and the coaching staff as much as the players. UNC had a game plan and executed it in the 1st half. Where was Miami's plan?

The D looked abysmal in the 1st half against a very poor offense. I'm really questioning this guy Walton. Yeah he shut down a run only Texas A&M team, but the D has issues against a balanced team. The D coaching has been horrible in both losses so far.

Does anyone else find it disconcerting that Shannon doesn't even wear a head set? He is giving a 1st year D coordinator and a O coordinator calling his own plays for the 1st time complete autonomy? Seems a little reckless to me. Like I said, giving Shannon the benefit of the doubt, but this is a bad loss.

Anyway, the talent seems to be in place for the most part. However, consistency is clearly lacking. A good QB would also help. Ha.

I really see no improvement in this team from last years 7-6 squad. Lazy, slow and soft. Especially the O line. Not alot of skilled postions. Baby J is over rated and Cooper is just too small. Do we even have a tight end? And the kicking game? That's REALLY sad. GT will roll us next weekend at home...again.

UM, The University of Mediocrity.
Now, that the academic standards have been raised at The U, we can expect this kind of anemic performances. Gone are the days where guys like Nevelle Divine can skate through class just because he can run a 4.3.
Get used to it Cane fans. The stanards are higher now and this is exactly why Donna S is here. The U wants to be known for higher academic standards along with the Dukes and Stanfords of the world. When's the last time either of those schools won a NC in football? Any way we can get Dennis Erickson back?

Ya'll jus don't have no offense. Ya'll shoulda hired me when ya'll had the chance.
I don't think ya'll have scored 40 points in a couple a years now...

What's wrong with all you guys in Miami? First the Dolphins and now the Canes?
Com'on Miami, get it together!

Another great game by the U...disgusting play!! One of the only blunders Shannon has made to date is hiring Patrick Nix as OC.. Sorry folks, I don't see anything other than high school play calling. Hell, we are all still able to sit at home and call the next play before it happens. Nix maybe a nice guy but way, way to inexperienced to be an OC...I don't care how many new recruits the U gets, Nix is going to hold them back.

Recruits are as good as the coaching staff
They will NOT solve HORRIBLE playcalling...
Lack of preparation
We where Schooled by a real coach.
MAM o MAN have you noticed that every QB that plays us looks like a Heisman candidate.
Today even the running back out of the bench looked great.
Did YOU notice the great running plays diagrammed by UNC with the center and guards pulling....
WOW
