Game day blog: Carolina 33, UM 27 (F)

l've had beer, chips and my TV set tuned into ESPN2 from my living room. I watched the Canes take on former coach Butch Davis and the Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. We shared our thoughts  and I kept track of some notes as the game went on.

FOURTH QUARTER
- UNC finds itself back in Miami territory when UM cornerback Bruce Johnson falls down on coverage on a short pass and Brandon Tate runs past the Miami defense -- despite losing his shoe -- all the way to UM 27. UNC settles for a field goa, making 30-20 with 14:12 left to play.
- Can the Canes keep their momentum going now? The offensed has to come through again now.
- Big third down conversion on 3rd and 15. Wright finds Sam Shields over the middle for a first down. But shortly after, Wright throws his third interception of the game when he forces the ball in. UNC takes over at its 41.
- Well, UM's defense limits the damage and holds UNC to another Conner Barth field goal, his fourth of the game. With 10:55 left to play, Miami trails 33-20.
- Miami is moving the football on the ground, peppering UNC with Graig Cooper and Javarris James. Can the Hurricanes score?
- Big fourth down with 6:47 left to play deep inside UNC territory. Wright keeps it and gets the first down. Canes fans can breathe a momentary sigh of relief.
- And it lasts just a moment. Another bad decision and bad throw by Kyle Wright. Four interceptions for Wright. It looks like it just isn't meant to be for Miami. 6:15 left to play.
- It's not over yet. Graig Cooper flips the ball to Darnell Jenkins on a punt return, the Canes build a wall and Miami moves the ball to the UNC 11 with 2:59 to play. Miami eventually scores on a Javarris James' plunge with 1:17 left to play in the game. But the Canes had to blow two time outs inside the 5. Now, they need an onside kick.
- Hakeem Nicks recovers the onside kick for UNC. The Canes are going to go down in UNC again. But at least, they battled back and made a game of it. They just couldn't overcome a terrible first half.

THIRD QUARTER
- Wow. What was that? With 12:38 to go in the first half, a different UM team comes out of the break and marches right down the field and scores a touchdown on a 1-yard Kyle Wright sneak to make it 27-7.
- The Rock was at UM this week. Anybody smell a comeback?
- On UNC's first drive of the second half, the Canes force a fumble on the their third play. Kenny Phillips forces it. Spencer Adkins recovers. Miami has the ball at UNC 30.
- Miami capitalizes when Wright connects with Sam Shields on a 4-yard, fourth down touchdown pass. Francesco Zampogna, though, misses the extra point when he hits the upright. But so far, the Canes have shown some life. It's 27-13 now.
- It was announced on TV by the way that McCarthy and Dixon will not return from their injuries today.
- Change the quarterback! This team stinks! Where are you now pessimistic Canes fans? Kyle Wright connects with Darnell Jenkins on a 97-yard touchdown pass to make it 27-20 with 4:22 left in the third quarter. Wright tried it first with Shields, but overthrew him. The second longest play in UM history has the Canes right back in the game. Wow!
- The Canes get the ball back, but on third down, Wright gets sacked. Miami ends up punting and UNC gets the ball back. The pressure is now once again on Miami's defense.

SECOND QUARTER

- Canes have put themselves in a much deeper hole after having a punt blocked inside their own 20. Yates scores on a 1-yard sneak with 11:25 left to put Carolina up 20-0.
- Both Antonio Dixon and Colin McCarthy were injured in the last series. Dixon had to be helped off the field and appears to have suffered a serious knee injury.
- The nightmare continues. After Kyle Wright and the offense struggle to pick up a first down again, UNC takes over and scores again. Brandon Tate on a 55-yard reverse makes it 27-0 with 9:59 left in the first half. Is it time to fire up the buses? Already?
- What I wouldn't do to be a fly on the wall in the Canes locker room right now. UM has been outgained 279-113.
- Kyle Wright has thrown two interceptions and has looked like the old Kyle Wright. Everything has gone wrong.

FIRST QUARTER
- After the teams exchange punts, Carolina draws first blood when Anthony Elzy gashes the Miami defense on a long touchdown run with 10:33 left in the first quarter.
- With 4:33 left in the first quarter, Conner Barth connects on his 16th straight field goal, a 33-yarder, to put Carolina up 10-0. On the drive, Calais Campbell was flagged for a phantom roughing the passer penalty. Replays showed Campbell never hit quarterback T.J. Yates. Amazing!
- Miami responds by moving the ball downfield after Ryan Hill gives them a real nice return out to midfield. But the drive fizzles and Francesco Zampogna misses a 32-yard field goal with 2:15 left.
- The hits keep on coming for Carolina. After another long passing play moves the ball into Miami territory, Conner Barth -- that guy again -- connects on a season-long 51-yard field goal to put Carolina up 13-0.
- This just in: The Canes are in trouble.

WE DO NOT SUCK RIGHT NOW, WE JUST DO NOT HAVE THE PLAYERS IT TAKES TO GET THE JOB THE DONE ON SATURDAY'S. I AM TYPING IN CAPS BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT WOULD HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE. MY MAN IS IS A GOOD KID BUT UM QUATERBACK HE IS NOT. AT THIS POINT COACH SHOULD THROW ONE OF THE WALK-ONS IN THE MIX TO REALLY SHOW HARRIS, COOK & MARVE THIS IS YOUR JOB TO CLAIM. WEATHER OR NOT KIRBY STICKS AROUND THERE WILL BE CHANGES.

I DON'T EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE GAME, LET'S TALK HOW PISSED COACH SHANNON LOOKED WHILE WATHCHING THE GAME FROM THE SIDELINE. I KNOW IT WAS A TOUGH DAY BUT FROWNS CAN TURN TO SMILES QUICKLY IN THE MAGIC CITY.

YO MANNY I KNOW KIDS WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE AND GET THAT AWAY FROM HOME FEELING BUT DON'T YOU THINK THESE KIDS OWE THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI FOR THE YEAR'S OF EXCELLENCE, THE LIGHT WHEN DADE COUNTY WAS DARK AND THE BRAGGING RIGHTS OF HAVING THE BEST FOOTBALL TALENT IN THE NATION. NO ONE COULD STOP US IF ALL OF THIS YEARS KIDS STAYED HOME.

I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE BLAME , EXCUSES, BLAH, BLAH. WHAT WE CARE ABOUT IS THOSE DUMB BLIND INTERCEPTIONS THAT ARE THROWN! THESE ARE NOT REGULAR INTERCEPTIONS THEY ARE I AM BLIND, I NEED EYE SURGERY INTERCEPTIONS!! EVERY TIME I SEE ONE OF THOSE AND THEN I SEE HIS LAID BACK REACTION LIKE HE DOESNT CARE AND THEN HIS HORRIBLE ANSWERS TO THE MEDIA THATS WHAT WE DONT LIKE. LETS FACE IT HE WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BUSTS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY.

Kyle Wright = coach killer

That's so freakin hilarious and true.

Why is it everyone with a straight face predicts a 7-5, 8-4 season, then when the losses necessary to reach that point start to pile up, everyone freaks out? Isn't this what we all expected? Didn't we know there wasn't much talent on this team? What's the big deal people. I told everyone they got too excited after the Texas A&M game. A&M made so many mistakes, it should have been 14-0 at halftime.

STOP OVEREACTING..MIAMI WILL BE FINE. THEY TOOK A HALF OFF(WHICH IS UNEXCEPTABLE) BUT THEY ARE CLEARLY THE BETTER TEAM... YES WRIGHT MAD SOME HUGE MISTAKES,BUT THIS SEASON IS NOT OVER.. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THE U IS WALTON.. THE DEFENSE HAS THE TALENT AND SCHEME TO BE THE 1 OF THE BEST IN THE NATION.. RANDY NEEDS TO THINK ABOUT KEEPIN HIS HEADSET ON TO HELP OUT THE ROOKIE DC..

GO CANES!!!

FELLOW CANESTERS PLEASE DON'T BUY INTO MOST OF THE BULLSHIT ON THIS BLOG CAUSE MOST OF IT IS FROM IMPOSTERS THAT HAVE 2 POSE AS CANES FANS CAUSE THEY R TOO EMBARRASSED TO LET US KNOW WHO THEY REALLY ROOT FOR CAUSE 9 TIMES OUT OF 10 IT'S SOMEBODY THE CANES OWN. CANESTERS U HAVE TO REALIZE THAT THE U HAS CAUSED A LOT OF PAIN AND SUFFERING FOR OPPOSSING TEAMS AND FANS FOR YEARS. SOME PEOPLE HAVE WOUNDS THAT WILL NEVER HEAL BECAUSE OF OUR U. WHY DO U THINK SO MANY HATERS SPEND SO MUCH TIME ON THE UM BLOGS? ONE IMPOSTER SUGGESTED THAT THE RECRUITS LOOK ELSEWHERE....SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE CANE-HATER FULL OF WISHFUL THINKING. IF I'M A RECRUIT LOOKING TO PLAY RIGHT AWAY I WOULD DEFINATELY CONSIDER THE U INSTEAD OF MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE DEONTE THOMPSON MADE BY CHOOSING THE TEAM THAT WAS HOT AT THE TIME OF HIS COMMITMENT. CANESTERS WE CANNOT GIVE UP AFTER ONLY 6 GAMES. I AGREE WE SHOULD HAVE NOT LOST TO UNC BUT IMAGINE HOW SO.CAL FANS FEEL AFTER LOOSING TO STANDFORD! THE TROJANS WERE PICKED TO WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE, THE U WAS'NT EVEN PICKED TO WIN THE ACC! IT COULD BE MUCH WORSE, ASK NOTRE DAME! OR BETTER YET, ASK UCLA WHO JUST LOST TO NOTRE DAME! CANESTERS DON'T THROW IN THE TOWEL JUST YET, AFTERALL, PETE CARROLL DID'NT BUILD THE TROJAN EMPIRE IN A DAY!

I see nothing wrong with great expectation starting a season for all the guys who , I knew it, scr you. If you cannot get exceited about the maybe, a great yr. what kind of fan are you. Now with the type of play ok , now is time to bring on the younger guys and develop they along with , even more creative offensive and defense. Now is the time to accept what is fine but all this I knew it such , is crp.

MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS
MIAMI SUCKS

Manny, are we doing Tuesday's live question and answer?
If we are, here are the first two questions.
How will Randy Shannon change the attitudes of these players to trust in him?
What it's the major obstacle they have to go through in order to start believing?

Canester-Nip---you are clueless...Like Most canes fans you sit there in denial. Just because some of us dont want to buy the s**t we are being sold does not mean were not canes fans...This is a bad football team. The canes stink and thats a fact. Oh wow...they played well for a half...IT WAS NC...YOU WANT ME TO PUT THAT IN CAPS...HOW ABOUT UNC GOT BLOWN OUT BY USF...THE TEAM THAT EVERYONE THINKS MIAMI CAN BEAT. IF USF PLAYED MIAMI RIGHT NOW THEY WOULD BEAT THEM BY 2 TOUCHDOWNS....GOOD TEAMS BEAT BAD TEAMS...JUST LIKE USF DID WITH FAU...MAYBE THE GAME WAS UGLY BUT THEY BEAT THEM...YES USC LOST TO STANFORD...WHO WOULD YOU RATHER BE A FAN OF UM OR USC...THE TROJANS COULD STILL WIN OUT AND PLAY FOR THE NC.

Now that I have stopped yelling....lets get back to normal talk...Miami is in trouble. Lose this weekend and they are on the verge of a sub .500 record. Cant blame coker for that.

I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE NOBODY CARES ABOUT THE BLAME , EXCUSES, BLAH, BLAH. WHAT WE CARE ABOUT IS THOSE DUMB BLIND INTERCEPTIONS THAT ARE THROWN! Who exactly are you all yelling at? Kyle's not elite and we all knew that. This team doesn't believe in itself and has a loser mentality. That hasn't changed since the clock turned to 2006. Randy isn't gonna be fired regardless of his facial expression. What coach looks happy or pleases fans in a loss? There are people at UF throwing Meyer under the bus after two straight losses. The same people who ran Zook out of town for sucking and he looks suddenly decent at Illinois, but then again he was 1-11 last year.

Now everyone throws USC out there as a fraud and basically everyone except LSU Ohio State and South Florida are really pissed, or basically waiting their turn to be pissed. Yes Miami choked away a game, and no they are not likely to pull of a miracle and come back and win the ACC. They've got enough home games left to avoid a losing record I think, but either way this season is pointing towards a lame December bowl. Probably in Orlando or Charlotte.

But didn't we all know that? Yes of course as a Canes fan I was and remain hopeful that the breakthrough is coming the next game. But you can't realistically expect it to happen with the same players (for the most part) that went 6-6 last year and have dominated nobody since winning 47-14 at Wake Forest in 2005.

A sudden turnaround with new and unproven players is one thing, and you see it with the new Ohio St and OU quarterbacks, or last year at UF with Tebow and Harvin putting a bit of life into the offense to go with a senior-laden and relentless D. Who are those new players on the Canes? Graig Cooper? DVD? That's it. Next year with players like the MNW crew and Marve and a slew of new faces, there is POTENTIAL for a sudden change. Not a guarantee, but it COULD happen. This year you were hoping the same players would suddenly have an epiphany and play like never before. That's a much less common occurence, and one that unforunately hasn't happend for UM. The next ACC loss, whenever that happens, means maybe the focus needs to shift and get some younger players in there and plan for the future. Until the Canes are eliminated, and they are not yet, all Randy or anyone can do is keep hoping these experienced guys turn a corner. It does their four years of effort (and yes they've tried, even if they've failed) a complete disservice to give up on them yet. Good luck guys, I hope you can do it.

so now you are putting your faith in a bunch of freshman to turn UM's program around. Miami will be in serious trouble next year if it is counting on freshman....You just cant win with freshman all over the place. Oklahoma a few weeks back had a qb that could not make any mistakes....now they lost a game...Does anyone actually think Marve could play better then Bradford has. Good luck...dont hold your breath too long.
