Q: Hey U dont have to anwser this if U dont want to manny, but what democrat do U like in this election. Posted by: canes#1 | October 30, 2007 at 08:35 PM

A: I’m not into politics dude. But ask me about hot chicks, sports, beer and UM and I’ll opine.

hey manny,

whats up with this years freshmen class? how are they doing? i'm talking about the ones that we don't hear about like wiggins, hankerson, gunn, horn, adderly, etc.?

Q: I know the coaches cannot say anything about a recruit or who they are recruiting, but why is UM not going after more kids from the west? Especially now that we are not getting Sabino, I would surely like to see the other 2 LBs and Thompkins come to the U. Posted by: CANES25 | October 30, 2007 at 08:39 PM

A: The guys really likes at the West that are not commits yet are WR Tommy Streeter and OL Ben Jones. Thompkins believe it or not has not gotten many offers. I like him too. But I’m not sure he’s UM material. There are several other underclassmen at Northwestern including a big sophomore defensive tackle I love. FYI, UM will do just fine without Etienne Sabino.

I know that's right I rather get guys to come in and work hard than guys that think they deserve to play.

Manny, did you ever see my impersonations of you in my Xbox 360 league? I always wrote my game recaps from the standpoint as if I were you. They were fun to do and it was a subtle way to add some realism and give you props. If you didn't see them and want to see one, let me know and I'll post a link.

Q: Hi Manny, Few quick shots:
1. ESPN Gameday at last game... any chance?
2. Kirby circa end of FSU... will he stick, and if he performs well against NCSU, does he start over Kyle?
3. Any bowl scouts been seen so far? They said Fiesta bowl folks were at the USF-Rutgers game. Just curious who is interested in what the Canes are cookin.
Thanks for the great reporting on practices and recruiting! Lookin forward to your next essay contest. Posted by: JC | October 30, 2007 at 08:43 PM

A: 1. No chance. I’d be shocked.
2. I think Kirby has maxed out. I can’t see him being any better than he was at the end of last season. In fact, he’s regressed this year. He looks less comfortable. Not sure how. His drive at the end of the FSU game was great and will be his greatest contribution to the Canes. Kyle will be the starter for the Virginia game. The only way he won’t is if he doesn’t recover or re-injures his high ankle sprain.
3. Lots of bowl scouts have been coming to the games. Peach Bowl crew. All of the ACC bowl connections have stopped by at one point or another. Haven’t seen any BCS bowls though and don’t expect to unless UM wins three in a row before going to Boston College.

What are our chances with the LB Brown from Kansas. Does he know our situation with are LB's. Are the canes looking at any rb's this year in recruiting. IF so, who??

Q: Manny...for the final game at the OB against UVA fans want to storm the field after the game. If UM and The City were smart they would tell MPD to let the fans do it AHEAD of time to avoid a nasty ending to the OB's history don't you think??? They should make a PUBLIC announcement BEFORE the game IMHO to let this happen peacfully and in an organized manner, do you agree? Posted by: 86Cane | October 30, 2007 at 08:43 PM

A: I agree 86. But I think fans also have to be warned not to do anything to destroy the stadium. FIU still has to play there. Tear the goal posts down, whatever. But it can't get out of hand. Otherwise, arrests will be made and it will get ugly. But I think fans should be allowed on the field one last time.

Q: What did you guys think of GA end zone celebration? Posted by: atlcanefan | October 30, 2007 at 08:52 PM

A: It was stupid. It could have made things really nasty and led to a UM-FIU type brawl. I think the NCAA should do something about it. Randy Shannon made a joke about it when he was asked for his assessment saying there was no way the Canes would be able to do it. Said the NCAA would be all over them for it.

Manny, wouldnt you agree CGNC and I are the most interesting and best looking people on Canespace?

Q: Hey Manny, is Doug Wiggins still on the team? There are rumours from some fan-sites that he has decided to transfer due to no PT. Posted by: Chris | October 30, 2007 at 08:52 PM
A: I answered this one earlier. Check it out.

Q: Hey, Manny who will get the bulk of carries this week against NC State? Posted by: canesagent07 | October 30, 2007 at 08:52 PM
A: Graig Cooper has been the best running back this year. I assume he’ll get a few more carries than Javarris James and Shawnbrey McNeal.

Manny, if Kyle can't go on Saturday, who will be Kirby's backup?

byran jones? your thoughts?

Q: Hey U dont have to anwser this if U dont want to manny, but what democrat do U like in this election. Posted by: canes#1 | October 30, 2007 at 08:35 PM

A: I’m not into politics dude. But ask me about hot chicks, sports, beer and UM and I’ll opine.

MANNY, THIS POST IS WHAT MAKES YOU THE BEST SPORTS WRITER TO CANES FANS ALL ACROSS THE WORLD. YOU ARE REAL...REAL 305!

Here's that link Manny if you are interested.

http://www.leaguedaddy.com/leagues/teams/teamnews.asp?lid=253&tid=49351&aid=56272&op=full

Disregard it, it won't let you see it if you aren't a league member. Bah-Humbug!

Still waiting for you to "opine", Manny. LOL

Q: Hey Manny, I posed this same question to Dan Lebatard on his chat yesterday: Why can a team like Arizona State go 8-0 coming off a 7-6 season last year but the Canes can't? Erickson even has Rich Olsen as his OC, who was ours in 2006, and they are playing at a totally different mindset, yet we, specifically Shannon, uses the excuse of "deprogramming"? I know our recruiting classes have been better on paper than ASU, too... I'm sick of hearing the "Coker screwed us" excuse. Erickson and ASU are living proof that you can make chicken salad out of chicken sh%t. I didn't buy Dan's whole "Erickson is a failure" schtick because he made a perennial Pac10 doormat in Oregon State into a BCS bowl team in 2000 with Houshmandzadeh & Chad Johnson there. Your thoughts? Posted by: Carlos | October 30, 2007 at 08:54 PM

A: Now to your question Carlos… a good one.
I’m not sure why Arizona State has made such a tremendous climb. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I know the inner workings of what has made the Sun Devils get off to such a great start and why UM is sitting at 5-3. But I can tell you this, their win over California Saturday was their first over a ranked opponent this year. They beat a California team that has lost three in a row. Not making excuses for Shannon. ASU is unbeaten and deserves all the credit for what they’ve accomplished. But let’s see what happens when they play a real Top 25 team. A lot of college football teams have made surprising runs to start the season in the past. Remember South Florida? I think that’s all ASU has done here. I think Oregon beats them this week by the way.

Manny...if the cops catch me storming the fieLd, all I wiLl say is:

DON'T TASE ME BRO"!!!

Q: Manny, any chance that Shalala has been playing us all along knowing that the final season in the OB would lead to an increase in tix sales? Would she then have the b*lls to turn around and use that money to renovate the old girl and keep us their until the apocalypse? Posted by: RT6 | October 30, 2007 at 08:59 PM

A: Yes. Right after Randy's players start flying around like he says they do every practice. Are you serious RT6? If Shalala does that, I'll shave my head.

Good job on the Q and A manny!

Also, Manny of the recruits gotten thus far, which one do you believe will have the most immidiate impact after what shannon said a couple weeks ago?

Manny...if the cops catch me storming the fieLd, all I wiLl say is: DON'T TASE ME BRO"!!! Posted by: SOUP | October 30, 2007 at 10:24 PM

LMAO!

Any of you see the You Tube Video of the Don't Tase Me Bro Remix to the music from MC Hammer's You Can't Touch This? Hilarious!

Q: I hope we land TE/DE Kavarrio Middleton from Washington. The success of Oregon & Arizona State isn't helping though. Posted by: Zakkee | October 30, 2007 at 09:07 PM

A: Canes are definitely looking to land a tight end. Not sure though if they have a real good shot at Middleton. Looks more like a longshot.

Q: Manny, you said that Kyle wasnt going to play this week he has started to practice i have read all of the interviews that kirby has done. does the rest of the team like kyle whats the deal here kirby thinks that if he starts against nc state then he is going to start the rest of the year? PLZ ANSWER THIS ? Posted by: canesfan99 | October 30, 2007 at 09:11 PM

A: The team likes both quarterbacks. I asked Derrick Morse. He said the tension between Kyle and Kirby only comes from the competition. He said though they are closer than they’ve ever been. This summer worked wonders for Kyle’s reputation in the locker room. Kirby has always been a team favorite.

Q: Manny, what would you say is the most noticeable area of improvement you've seen -- behind the scenes -- from the Canes this year? Posted by: Chris | October 30, 2007 at 09:18 PM

A: This is a united team again. There’s no doubt this team has been divided in the past. The defense couldn’t stand the offense. There is love again between both units. That’s big and perhaps the biggest thing Randy has brought this team this year. Toughness comes next year when everyone gets accustomed to the changes.

good points and thanks for answering, Manny.

You've gotta to give credit to Erickson, though....people wrote him off down here because he "won with Jimmy's kids" but the guy can flat out coach X's & O's...but he wasn't exactly known for a being a disciplinarian, either.

but lol @ South Florida, though....guys like Grothe and Co. were talking a huge amount of smack in the media about the rest of the "Big 3". Get some hardware first, like a conference championship, and then run your sock.

and a big Co-Sign that Oregon will horsewhip ASU this week.

Q: The OL from jacksonville(Jones) what do the coaches like the most about him? Is he a true diamond in the rough? Posted by: Connecticane88 | October 30, 2007 at 09:18 PM
A: He’s definitely a diamond in the rough. My sources say the Canes love the kids toughness.

His work out video is pretty impressive, he has alot of potential from what I saw of him on SunshinePreps.

ASU's raise can be contributed to their great QB play. Carpenter's a baller and a fiery leader. ASU's had the tools (players), but Dirk couldn't pull it together. He was mainly fired because of the QB Fiasco not working out. Who's to say ASU wouldn't make this rise if Koetter was still the coach @ ASU? Maybe this was their year it all fell together.

Q: What's your assessment on Kirby's season? He went from savior to bum to kinda savior. In my humble opinion, his overall performance this year (when he's seen the field) is much worse than last year. What gives? Is it just a confidence thing? Posted by: Displaced Cane in Chi-Town | October 30, 2007 at 09:21 PM

A: I believe its confidence. Kirby definitely lost it when he lost the starting job. Everytime he gets on the feeling I get the feeling like he’s trying to do too much. Like that guy who gets benched on the basketball team and comes out firing threes and drawing fouls as soon as he gets back in the game.

Manny, do you think Kirby starts next year? I think the battle is really between Marve and Jacory. Jacory impresses me, but Marve may have the hand up by being in a year, but the injury has slowed his progress, so I think Jacory has a shot. Taylor Cook I think gets a RS.

Q: Manny, Haven't heard much about Chris Perry, Harland Gunn, or Ian Symmonette as of late. What's the deal with those guys and will they be ready to contribute next year? Posted by: bg1906 | October 30, 2007 at 09:29 PM

A: Funny you ask about those young offensive lineman Bryce. I asked Jason Fox and Derrick Morse about who the young guys that will be playing next season. Obviously, Orlando Franklin is at the top of the list. But Joel Figueroa is really tearing things up in practice. He’s a guy Stoutland pointed out to me a few weeks ago. Gunn and Tyler Horn are next on that list. If A.J. Trump stays healthy, though, he should be next year’s starting center. That’s a big IF!

So OL would be like Fox, Figueroa, Trump/Gunn/Horn, Franklin, Rutledge/Youngblood....huh...I'm good with that.

Q: Rockin' the blog Manny, rockin' the blog! Last question: How much healthier is the team now than before the bye week? Which specific guys have gotten healthy that will make a difference? Posted by: 86Cane | October 30, 2007 at 09:29 PM

A: A lot healthier 86. There were a lot of bumps and bruises following the FSU game. Colin McCarthy told me he feels a lot better. Same with Lance Leggett and a few other guys that have been bothered by injuries. The biggest help will come in two weeks when Antonio Dixon likes comes back for the Virginia game. It looked like he’d be out for a long time. He told me today he’s hoping to be practicing fully next week, which means he’ll be back for the Virginia game. He’s a key cog to this defense, which is hurting for size and a run stuffer up front.

I hope Symmonette comes around, his size is intimidating. He's big like Bryant Mckinnie. Hopefully he can be as good one day.

YoungBlood/Patchan* :)

YoungChris...Let's hope!

I'll tell you who has stood out to me from the Freshman class too, and that's Damien Berry. He's always around the action on special teams. I hope he gots a shot in the near future. I like his energy.

In looking at the 2006 commit list to see more information on Figueroa, I stumbled on a five-star RB, LeSean McCoy. What happened with this guy? I cannot remember us discussing why he is with Pitt and not The U. Maybe I am having a brain fart.

Chicago, He went to prep school with Graig Cooper and Cooper started over him there although he never was 100% healthy. I don't think he wanted to compete with Coop and the rest of our stable of backs.

Q: Hey Manny, great blog. Which bowl game do you think Miami will go to this year (Perhaps premature on my part)? I still think we can make it to the BCS game and perhaps have a rematch against OU.Posted by: Sy-Cane | October 30, 2007 at 09:46 PM A: The Canes still can make it into the BCS. But I think they’ll be playing in Charlotte (Meinke Car Car Bowl, Dec. 29, 11 a.m. vs. Big East) or Orlando (Champs Sports Bowl, Dec. 28, 5 p.m. vs. Big Ten).

Chicago...he chickened out when Coop committed to the U. Coop beat him out at the prep school they were both at and he knew he would do it again at the U.

Thanks Soup

That's why Coop was elevated to 5 Stars. Because coming out of high school he was only a 3 star. Goes to show the stars don't mean a thing!

Thanks bg1906.....doesn't sound like U material.

OK peeps. I'm shutting it down. Got a few more questions to answer. Then I'm out. Hope you enjoyed it. I certainly did. You guys are a trip.

McCoy is a very good back, but he's the featured back at Pitt while at UM he would be one of the group.
