Courtside blog: UM 104, Florida So. 61 (F)

I wasn't going to blog live during basketball games. But I've decided to do it anyway when I have the time. Tonight, as the game progresses, I'll provide updates and highlights here for you to check out. Give me your thoughts as you listen to the game at home on 560 WQAM or watch on the internet at ACC Select. Let's have some fun.

Starting lineup for the Canes: Guards - Jack McClinton, Lance Hurdle. Forwards - Brian Asbury, Jimmy Graham. Center - Anthony King.
Starting lineup for the Moccassins: Guards - Brandon Jenkins, Braxton Williams and Rob Eldridge; Forwards - Zach Smith and Will Graham.
- Didn't even realize this until now. This game actually is a preseason game for Florida Southern, a Division II school. According to NCAA rules, the game will not count because D-II schools aren't allowed to play regular season games until Nov. 15.

FIRST HALF...
- Miami wins the tip and point guard Lance Hurdle's first pass ends up being stolen and taken in for a quick bucket.
- After the score is tied 4-4 early, UM goes on a 9-2 run behind eight points from Brian Asbury in the early going. Asbury is 4-of-4 from the field.
- At the 16 minute mark, coach Frank Haith goes to his bench, bringing in James Dews, Ray Hicks, Edwin Rios and Dwayne Collins. Adrian Thomas follows shortly after. Looks like Haith wants to get his full 10-man rotation in early. This is typical Haith. Problem was last year he didn't have 10 guys to rotate in.
- At the 13:47 mark, Haith leaves McClinton in to run the point. UM goes on a 6-0 run and McClinton makes a nice pass to Jimmy Graham inside for an easy lay-in. McClinton at 6-1 is a guy who is going to have to learn the point if he wants to make the NBA. So far, so good. Both Rios and Hurdle, by the way, had a turnover on their first times out on the court running the point.
- At the 7:37 mark, Dwayne Collins brings the funk, spinning and the dunking on FSC.
- James Dews just had himself a nice little run with a 3-point basket, then on the other side of the floor, he stole the ball away and had a pretty layup in traffic.
- Collins later picks himself up another dunk, this one on a putback slam on an Anthony King miss. I know this is against a DIvision II team, but Collins' athletic ability is still something rarely seen at UM for a big man. And it is pretty. Collins eventually leaves the game when he picks up his second foul on what was ruled a charge.
- Jimmy Graham picks up his second foul of the game setting a screen at the 2:05 mark.
- James Dews continues to impress here, hitting another three-pointer. He's got 11 points now to lead the team.
- Wow. Nice surprise. A number of big-time former Hurricanes are about to go on the floor at halftime to be honored. Among those on the floor: Andre Johnson, Gino Torretta, Bennie Blades -- and a bunch of other guys will be at the OB tomorrow for the final game.
- And the half ends on an Edwin Rios three-pointer...

SECOND HALF...
- Jack McClinton has started to get rolling here in the second half, opening with a pair of three-point shots. He's got 13 points with 16:15 left.
- I'm not keeping up with as much of the game here on play-by-play, but two guys I keep noticing over and over again are James Dews and Adrian Thomas. It's not just the fact they're scoring -- Dews has 13 and Thomas has 11 -- its the fact they're making plays in all facets of the game. Defense, boards, steals. If these two guys can play like this all season, this UM team can be top 6 in the ACC like Haith believes they can.

Manny is this a much better team than last year and what will be the first good test
for our BB team this year?

King seems bigger and in good shape!!!

Darnell Jenkins at quarterback? Yes, it could happen Saturday against Virginia. The wide receiver has been working at quarterback extensively this week in practice according to a source close to the team.Have you heard about that Manny?

In two minutes Jimmy Johnson on WQAM

A: First big test will probably be the second round of the Puerto Rico tournament next week. I'll be there for it. UM is likely to get Virginia Commonwealth, a second round team last year in the tourney which upset Duke in the first round.

This team definitely looks better. More experienced. Healthy. The keys are the development of the point guard. You need a guy who can defend in the ACC. Having McClinton play major minutes there hurts this team. You need him to score and nothing else.

A: Jenkins is a tremendous athlete. He lined up at quarterback on running plays last week twice. I don't suspect he would attempt too many passes if he really has to play there in an emergency situation. More for trickery than anything else.

Thanks Manny! You should stop at the Mayfair after the game at the Vilma party.

Manny...I think you are now officially addicted to blogging! You can't put it down. Score updates please?

Great game! I can't wait for Puerto Rico next week. I'm probably the only cane fan traveling to Puerto Rico to watch.

So, wait a minute - this game counts for the University of Miami but not for Florida Southern? Is this how far the UM athletic department has fallen, that they're being used as exhibition games by DII schools? That's hysterical. When the OB is demolished, Paul Dee should be shackled to the midfield stripe.

Manny do you think we have a good chance
to get Arthur Brown?

He just dropped the Sooners tonite and apparently has strong interest in Miami...

What is his relation with UM Coaches?
In particular MB

JT;

"It has to be exhibition" for FS because their season does not start until NOV15 as per DII rules.

They (FS) had to count it as an exhibition. This year we came out on all cylinders. Remember that last year at the beginning we lost to similar teams.

Little steps, bro..

I should go to some games this year. The team sounds entertaining..

Wow, 104 points in the first game!! When was the last time Miami was able to put 100 on another team?

Atleast they beat them like a D2 team
