Game day blog: Virginia 48, UM 0 (F)

They came to say good-bye to the Orange Bowl, but as it stands now, Hurricanes fans might as well say good-bye to the current season. UM has saved the worst for last.

Normally, I'd sit here and take in the final game ever at the Orange Bowl until the 7 minute mark -- when I head down to the field to grab quotes. But seeing how bad things are, I figured I'd let this become a forum for bigger issues you might want to tackle.

For starters, is this the most embarrasing moment for you as a Hurricanes fan?
Are we taking things for granted? I mean that in the sense that Randy Shannon is going to be able to turn this around. I know UM has some talented recruits waiting to come in, but can this program really climb back to the moutaintop? What makes you still have that faith today?

You digest that. I've got the dreadful play-by-play below.

By the way, I was on the field before the game, gathering thoughts from some of the greats -- Bennie Blades, Gino Torretta, Ottis Anderson and Darin Smith. I'll post the audio later tonight.

THE RECAP (THE PLAY BY PLAY UNTIL THINGS GOT REAL UGLY)...
FIRST QUARTER...
- Virginia wins the toss and defers to the second half. UM will receive.

UM 1st Drive (1st and 10 at UM 33, 14:53)
- Ryan Hill returns the opening kickoff out to the 33-yard line.
- After a 4-yard run by Javarris James and a 2-yard scramble by Kyle Wright, Darnell Jenkins comes through with the first big play for Miami, hauling a 5-yard catch for a first down to the UM 44.
- On the next set of downs, Wright goes to Lance Leggett on third and 6, but for only 3 yards. UM punts and Matt Bosher gets off a 45-yarder downed by Colin McCarthy at the Virginia 4.

VA 1st Drive (1st and 10 at the UVA 4, 11:33)
- After Kenny Phillips make a nice play in the backfield for a 1-yard loss, Virginia QB Jameel Sewell finds his tight end Tom Santi for a 25-yard gain upfield before he Santi steps out of bounds. On the next play, Virginia runs a screen play to running back Mikell Simpson, who picks up 11 yards and another first down to the UM 38.
- On the next play, Simpson sweeps wide and rumbles all the way down to the UM 34, picking up 38 yards on the play after getting away twice from Tavares Gooden.
- On the very next play, UM has a chance to sack Sewell back for a big loss, but he escapes the grasp of Darryl Sharpton and Vegas Franklin and scrambles forward for a 5-yard gain.
- With 8:35 left Virginia faces 3rd and 5 at the UM 29 and picks up a first down when Sewell moves left and finds receiver Maurice Covington wide open in the middle of the field. And he waltzes past Willie Cooper for a with 8:26 left. Drive: 7 plays, 96 yards, 3:07. UVA 7, UM 0.
- And the Orange Bowl is stunned.

UM 2nd Drive (1st and 10 at UM 25, 8:18)
- On the ensuing kickoff, Shawnbrey McNeal goes down awkwardly after fielding the kick and limps off the field.
- On first down, Darnell Jenkins lines up at quarterback and takes a direct snap forward for short yardage. UM gets flagged for holding. Kyle Wright returns to the game.
- On first and 20, Dajleon Farr gets open over the middle for an 11-yard gain. On second and 9, fullback Jerrell Mabry picks up 3 yards, bringing up a 3rd and 6. On the next play, Virginia brings the safety blitz and Wright's pass to Jerrell Mabry bounces off his hands and into the hands of Virginia cornerback Vic Hall who intercepts the ball at the UM 36.

UV 2nd Drive (1st and 10 at UM 36)
- On the first play, Sewell tries to go deep down the center of the field and is intercepted by Randy Phillips, who returns the ball to the UM 27. The Canes catch a break.

UM 3rd Drive (1st and 10 at UM 27)
- After a 1-yard run by Graig Cooper and incomplete pass by Kyle Wright, he gets picked off again -- this time by linebacker Jon Copper who sits back in zone coverage and catches the ball at the UM 36.

UV 3rd Drive (1st and 10 at UM 36, 5:13 left)
- On first down, after a short run, UM defensive tackle Antonio Dixon limps off the field. Not good news. On third and 11 at the UM 37, UM brings the blitz and sacks Sewell, forcing a fumble that Colin McCarthy scoops up and returns for a touchdown. But the play is called back because Vegas Franklin jumped offsides.
- On the next play, Franklin makes up for his goof -- somewhat -- by sacking Sewell at the UM 35.
- Virginia punter Chris Gould tries to pooch the ball, but it bounces into the end zone.

UM 4th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 20, 2:51 left)
- Despite all the troubles early on, the Canes should feel lucky to only be down 7-0. If I'm Randy Shannon, I'm letting Cooper and James run the football.
- UM goes three and out after Darnell Jenkins and Jarell Mabry drop what would have been first down catches.
- Things get worse when Matt Bosher's punt gets blocked by Josh Zidenberg and it rolls out of bounds at the UM 5.

UV 4th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 4)
- Two plays later, tailback Keith Payne follows his blockers into the end zone to make it 14-0 with 1:08 to play. Drive: 2 plays, 4 yards, :44. UVA 14, UM 0.

UM 5th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 22)
- With all the big-time recruits on the sidelines, you'd think Randy Shannon would get some of them to put on uniforms at halftime.
- Javarris James picks up UM's 2nd first down afer back-to-back runs net 11 yards... END OF THE FIRST QUARTER.

SECOND QUARTER...
UM 5th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 22)
- UM picks up action here in the second quarter with a 1st and 10 at the UM 33. On first down, Wright fakes a handoff and has Darnell Jenkins open despit double-coverage and the pass falls incomplete.
- UM's drive goes south two plays later when Lance Leggett finds himself open in the middle of the field, falls to the ground and Kyl Wright's pass bounces off his chest and hands and up into the hands off a Virginia safety who returns it to the UM 21.

UV 5th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 21)
- UM's defense is getting pressure on Sewell, but that offsides penalty right now on Vegas Franklin looms large.
- Virginia ends up scoring on a 33-yard field goal by Gould with 13:29 left.

UM 6th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 3)
- The comedy of erros continues. Ryan Hill fields a bouncing ball that would have gone out of bounds. Instead, he steps out of bounds at the 3 yardline giving UM horrible field position. Miami ends up punting.

UV 6th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 38)
- Sewell caps a quick drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone, making the score 23-0 with 10:02 to play. Do the fans start hitting the exits now? UVA 24, UM 0.

UM 7th Drive (1st and 10 at UM 28)
- On first down, Nate Collins sacks Kyle Wright at the UM 23. On second and 15, Shannon calls time out. On the next play, Graig Cooper explodes for a 25-yard gain upfield to the UM 48.
- UM punts four plays later.

UV 7th Drive (1st and 10 at UV 28, 7:35)
- I'm just going to stop doing play by play. This is amazing. Virginia is just killing UM. Virginia scores again. 31-0.

I don't believe what i am seeing. Who are those guys in orange unny's with U on there helmets. Will someone please let them know that this is the last game in the OB.

Q: Why is Leggett still playing, Manny? Do we really don't have a better receiver than him? It's just crazy to think we don't have better WRs, and QBs than these. I usually don't do this, but Coker really screw us up with the QBs, and WRs. Posted by: Norm | November 10, 2007 at 09:16 PM

A: I' was told last month that all of UM's incoming freshmen receivers and quarterbacks will play next season. And that most of the defensive recruits see significant playing time too.

the canes can lick my puckered, brown rosebud.

the orange bowl is dead; long live the orange bowl!

not with a bang but a whimper.

Hey Manny - I want you to RIP into Shannon and the players post-game and ask the tough questions!!! This team SUXXXX and looks like there is no coaching happening.

Q: manny, how can miami rebound from this as a program and a staff? this is about as demoralizing a situation as i can imagine.
Posted by: MCMXIV | November 10, 2007 at 09:19 PM

A: That's going to be an interesting question. I imagine this means this season is over. No bowl game. Start planning for the spring and make sure those recruits stick to the program.

We just don't have the talent at QB and WR. The defense has given up and called it a night. This is a sad way to close out the OB. Sad, Sad ending.

Can U amaging what Ray Lewis is thinking?

this might be the saddest(sports related) day in my life. Manny is everything over for the once proud program of miami. How did things get like this? i so wanted to go to the game but i am in med school and we hav a block of exams i think i made the right decision. I seriously want to cry. Please give me hope Manny, I love this school and this is so painful to watch/read. Manny please give me hope please (tear running down my face) please! Manny

Like I said before can't wait for next year. Just to think we will have a four quaterback competition next year makes me smile. We have to get receivers than can catch the ball too.

Norm, Kirby is only a junior. I think RS should tell him after the last game to play on special teams or pour the gatorade.

I can't wait till next year a least Kyle will be gone and hopefully Kirby won't be far behind.

this isn't just about the offense ... uva went 90 something yds on our d with the game tied at zero and emotion still on our side. 38 on the board is mind blowing.

I'll be there for the spring game in the O.B. Sorry My bad Pro Player Park, or Dolphin Stadium. Well U know what I mean.

Rob, Kirby needs to try out for the punter position or WR next year.

In the words of dandy Don Meredith "Turn out the lights the party is over."

A: Poop, the only hope UM has are those teenagers standing in the West End Zone. The kids from Northwestern, Booker T. Washington. They need those kids to grow up fast and to come in with the type of energy Randy Shannon sorely needs.

Norm, I don't want Kirby touching the ball. He'll muff the punt!

a sad sad day in miami.... just hope recruits arent changing their minds... it would be one thing to lose but to lose with no effort and lack of pride to wear the uniform that so many greats have worn... its almost disrespecting to watch them play like this

Ugly stuff. All of the Miami teams seem to be ensnared in the same karmic blowback this year. How about we write off this season for the Fins, Canes, Heat and Panthers like we did for the Marlins and maybe learn to relax with a good book or two?

IT'S GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE!! IT'S GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE!!

Manny please help us give us some hope! It feels like i am watching a car accident happen b/w a golf cart and a semi! Make the hurt go away! make the pain subside! anything I am gonna need some pain killers after this game and maybe the rest of my life if this is how the canes are gonna play. Screw Shalala and dee they dont care about this school at all!

Randy has made the team worst than last season. He should get fired. I could care less about recruits because next year people are going to be saying wait for the next batch of recruits. Fire him now and find a new coach.

Here's some good news... basketball season is starting!

Rob, U maybe right, LOL.

way to go Calais next time take a better angle

Walton is being taken to school. Totally out coached and out schemed. Nix is terrible as Offensive Coordinator. Pannuzio sucks as Special Teams coach. You have to put this game on the coaches. It is one thing to play freshman and sophomores and perform this bad, but it is another team to play this many seniors and juniors and get whipped this bad. This team gave up in the 2nd quarter and may be done for the season. This team has completely regressed this season and Shannon has to think hard about his strategy. He has to identify players he can trust and go with them. He can't continue to change the starters every week. The team needs to have the same starters every week to build continuity and chemistry. This is just sorry.

WOW CANES SUCK!!!

I honestly can't believe that this program has fallen so far. I believe that Miami NW (please stay firm recruits) could beat this sorry a@@ team that is on the field right now. Absolutely no heart, self determination. Get rid of all player's on scholarship (where you at C. Campbell, K. Phillips?). Give scholarships to young men who want to play and take pride in their performance. Disgusting. Quitter's.

I know, Manny. They actually were able to put some points on the board. 100+ can't remember the last time they score that many points.

I have to watch this 'til the end. Miami made the right move with RS. We have to give him time. Remember, he had to find coaches and hang on to recruits and had to do it in such a short period of time. RS will turn this program around. The recruits will come! What other program on the national stage can you potentially be in a 1st or 2nd position in your first year. Go Canes!

Miami teams just get even worse... wow. This whole city has really been pissed upon this year.

MANNY,

Kyle has had no help at all in my opinion 2 of his int were not his fault whats your opinion?

Gotta give Randy 3 years and see what happens. Switch coaches now and all the recruits will back out.

Okay - missed FG! THE COMEBACK STARTS NOW!!

The only good thing about today is that Ohio, and ND lost. No championship for the buckeyes. :)

I agree Randy is a good hire but he has to get back to HURRICANE football. BIGPLAYS and TURNOVERS.

I agree with bradley, the NW Bulls could also probably beat the fins too in a one night stand. The Canes? Anytime.. these losers are horrible.

A: Agree on both counts. You cannot blame Wright for two of those picks and you can't determine what Randy is capable of until he brings in at least 3 classes. He has the same team Coker had last year, minus 3 first round picks.

Manny,

I KNOW Matt Patcham (5-star tackle from Armwood High in Seffner, Fl.) is visiting along with a couple other recruits. My questions:

1. Which recruits/prospects are in attendance tonight? Any idea if they're still there and what they're saying (presuming you break rules and speak with them)?

2. What are the alumni and former players saying/doing?

3. What do YOU think is the reason for this result tonight? I know you go to practices and have to know more than any of us how things go.

Let's keep running the ball. They have no confidence in our sorry QB's,(which they shouldn't, cause they suck) and therfore no hope of trying to get back in the game.

Norm, it looks like the Gators could lose today as well they sure look like sh!t. Ohio State is still a pretty decent team just not near enough.

About the 4 qbs competing next year; Kirby Freeman I believe is in his 4th year and there is no gaurantee that a school grants a 5th year. Shannon and the University are not required to grant a 5th year of scholarship eligibility. But yes, most likely he will be returning because of experience.

2009 will be the year Randy has to produce. Next year would be asking too much for true/redshirt freshmans to make a huge impact.

Why do Miami teams always have to SUCK?

Word is that Ryan Collins was discovered to have anoher year of eligibility left and will be on the roster battling for the starting QB position next year.

i know athletes can ask out of scholarships but can the school ask for the scholarship back??? kirby, kyle, and anyone kicking the ball... the players should actully pay back the money they were given for an education... i hope next week they play all the frosh... besides morse no senior deserves to play, kenny and calais will both leave continuing the 1st round streak, and next year i say lets put all the northwestern kids in and bring luke back into the recruiting scene!

rickyD, Ohio is doing what Miami used to do five or six years ago play the backup players when there is a blowout. That is why the buckeyes do so well every year. Miami doesn't have that lexury anymore. The Gators have too much for the Gamecocks.

I agree someone cast a spell on this city with its sports teams.. ever since that Dolphin trade for Ted Ginn everything has been downhill for EVERY team in this city. I blame Wayne and Cam they cast a spell on this city not even the Heat can get a win now its gotten that bad.

A: 1. I'm not on the field, so let's clear that up right now. Before the game though, I saw a number of recruits -- Matt Patchan, Brandon Harris -- all of the Northwestern and Booker T. Washington kids. I'll try to speak to them after the game. My general thought is that these kids won't care too much about this result. They've been told by coaches all along this team stinks and they need them to make UM good again.
2. Alumni is embarrassed, but they believe in Shannon because he's one of them.
3. These players are made of mental mush. They can't handle pressure. There was a lot of pressure on them from the get-go. And they folded.
