Game day blog: N.C. State 19, UM 16 (OT)

Checking in from the OB where today as usual I'll blog live throughout the UM-N.C. State game. I'll share notes, thoughts as the game moves along and then recap later tonight with what I collect from the lockerroom. U do what U always do ... share your thoughts.

** Kirby Freeman got the start for UM. Guess my source knew what he was talking about. But don't be surprised if you see Kyle Wright come in at some point if things get really bad.

** There were a few pregame festivities including a tribute to the 1987 National Championship before the game. I saw Steve Walsh and Michael Irvin among others in attendance. Walsh even played a little catch with freshman quarterback Robert Marve. Too bad there is only about 34,621 people at the OB to soak it in.

** I didn't give a pregame prediction, but I'll do one now after the teams went 3-and-out on their first series. I think the Canes win 20-10.

** I know the game is on ESPNU and many of you don't have it. But for those of you who would like to listen to the game, WQAM (wqam.com) is broadcasting it on about an eight second delay.

SECOND HALF
FOURTH QUARTER...
NCST DRIVE (1st and 10 at NCST 20)
- After a first down run, N.C. State picks up 55 yards and moves to the UM 13 with :20 left in the quarter when quarterback Daniel Evans finds Darrell Blackman open down the middle of the field. Kenny Phillips eventually pushed him out bounds.
- So we'll go to the fourth quarter like we've done too often this season -- sweating and holding our breath.
- On 3rd down and 11, Evans lofts a pass to Darrell Davis that is well defended by Kenny Phillips. N.C. State then pulls back to within three when kicker Steven Hauschka connects on a 31-yard field goal from the same spot where Daren Daly made it 13-7. Drive: 7 plays, 68 yards, 1:58. UM 13, N.C. State 10.

UM DRIVE (1st and 10 at UM 20)
- Just saw this stat that blew me away. Canes have one completion -- that 84-yarder to Jenkins. Freeman is 1 of 10 with 2 interceptions. Miami eventually punts, Bosher gets off a 54-yarder, and Colin McCarthy comes through with a nice tackle to push Blackman out at the 36.

NCST (1st and 10 at NCST 36, 13:12 left)
- On first down, Euguen picks up 3 yards. Eugene eventually picks up a first down on third and short, moving the ball to the UM 47.
- Not that this is a shock, but the Canes defense is going to have to win this thing.
- After N.C. State moves inside the Canes' 30, Kenny Phillips comes through with a key tackle to stall the drive. Another Hauscka field goal -- this one from 35 yards -- ties the score at 13. UM 13, N.C. STATE 13.

UM (1st and 10 at the UM 20, 10:00)
- Following a five-yard penalty, James picks up 14 yards on a run off tackle on first down. On second down, Chris Rutledge is flagged for a false start. On the next play, Javarris James rumbles for a 10-yard gain up the middle and a first down.
- On first and 10 at the UM 34, James gets cut down for no gain. Looks like the Canes are content to run behind Derrick Morse.
- Well forget that. Kirby Freeman gets intercepted by Jeremy Gray on another horrible pass. Kirby got pressured and looked like he was going to throw it away. Gray standing on the sideline and basically minding his own business. Just caught the ball and stepped out of bounds with 7:36 left. CANES ARE IN TROUBLE...

And I'm going down to the field. Enjoy the rest of the game. Or try to.

THIRD QUARTER...
Missed the first half of the third quarter because I was doing an important halftime interview. Thankfully, I didn't miss much. The Canes just missed a 41-yard field goal with 4:28 left in the quarter. I'll continue from here...

NCST DRIVE (1st and 10 at the NCST 24, 4:28)
- On first down, Evans throws a pass short to his receiver. On second down, John Dunlap drops an easy completion bringing up 3rd an 10.

UM DRIVE (1st and 10 at the UM 39, 3:40)
- It looked like another drive that was going to end in nothing. Then, Darnell Jenkins turned on the jets. He picked up 39 yards, running away from 2 guys to get down to the N.C. State 18. Then, when things look bad again -- there's that man -- Darnell Jenkins pulling in what looks like an amazing touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. Was he in? The replay screen at the Orange Bowl shows... what replay screen?
- After further review... incomplete. Bah humbug. Canes will have to kick another field goal from 33-yards out and this time it goes through with 1:07 left. Daren Daly is now 2 of 3 in the game. Drive: 7 plays, 45 yards, 2:33. UM 13, N.C. STATE 7.

FIRST HALF
FIRST QUARTER...
UM 1st Drive (1st and 10 at UM 26)
- Things didn't exactly go right on that first series. After Javarris James lost 12 yards on first down, there was a bad snap and bad pass by Freeman on what looked like a designed screen. Yikes.

NCST 1st Drive (1st and 10 at the NCST 41)
- After the Wolfpack get five yards on the ground on first down, safety Kenny Phillips and linebacker Colin McCarthy do a nice job on pass coverage to force the Wolfpack to punt.

UM 2nd Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 11, 12:02 left)
- On first down, Javarris looks good picking up 11 yards on a toss sweep. This one looked better than the first one. On the next play, though, James drops a screen pass. Eventually Miami is forced to punt when Freeman overthrows Dajleon Farr downfield. He was covered.
- Kyle Wright anyone?

NCST 2nd Drive (1st and 10 at the NCST 48)
- On first down, N.C. State picks up two on the ground with Jamelle Eugene. On next play he picks up five more to bring up a 3rd and 3. On third down, Eugene gets hit in the backfield by Colin McCarthy and Courtney Harris in the backfield for a loss.
- So far, UM's defense has done what it has supposed to do. The question now becomes can Miami's offense do anything with Freeman under center. Two of his first three passes have looked awful. The UM running game is going to have to win this game.

UM 3rd Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 15, 8:46 left)
- Wow, Derron Thomas makes an appearance in the backfield. Heard earlier this week that Graig Cooper had a pinkey injury, but Shannon said it wasn't serious. Wondering if Randy Shannon put him in the game because he's hungry.
- So far he looks like a genious. That was an amazing 54-yard run by Thomas, who zig-zagged his way through the N.C. State defense. UM is on the N.C. State 22.
- Javarris James comes back in and takes a sweep inside to the N.C. State 6 before Derron Thomas comes back in on first and goal.
- On the next play, Thomas picks up 2. After all that -- including a Kirby Freeman bizarre scramble and incompletion on third down, the Canes attempt a 22-yard field goal made by Daren Daly to take a 3-0 lead with 4:56 left. Drive: 9 plays, 80 yards, 3:50. UM 3, N.C. STATE 0.
-
By the way, Joel Figueroa was in at left guard that entire drive. Figueroa, a sophomore, has been doing really well in practice according to coach Jeff Stoutland.

NCST 3rd Drive (1st and 10 at NCST 31, 4:48)
- Another Wolfpack series begins with short gains on first and second down. On third and 1, N.C. State picks up a first down on a nice pass completion. But it's called back on an ineligible man downfield penalty. After another penalty on third down, N.C. Statequarterback Daniel Evans gets sacked by Colin McCarthy.
- Another nice series for the Canes defense. But N.C. State keeps shooting itself in the foot. Four penalties on third down so far. UM will get nice field position.

UM 4th Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 40)
- Just figured out why Derron Thomas was in the game. Looks like Shawnbrey McNeal didn't dress to play. Not sure why. Eric Moncur is also not dressed and playing in the game. I'll have to find out why afterward.
- UM's drive meanwhile, fizzled and ended with an ugly Kirby Freeman interception. The pass was way overthrown and the N.C. State safety just fielded it like a punt at the N.C. State 20.

2nd QUARTER...
N.C. State 4th Drive (1st and 10 at the NCST 38)
- The Wolfpack pick up a first down on a 5-yard completion to John Dunlap. END OF THE 1st QUARTER
- On the first play of the second quarter Colin McCarthy comes through with another big play when he tackles a N.C. State running back for an 8-yard loss on a swing pass. Nice play.
- On third and 18, Evans is pressured and his pass to Marcus Stone is incomplete.
- It's been an ugly offensive game so far, except for that Derron Thomas run.

UM 5th Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 14)
- Wow. I was half-way kidding when I talked about using the direct snap. But apparently Freeman isn't doing the job. Darnell Jenkins took the first two direct snaps and has lost 12 yards. On third down, sanity returns. Graig Cooper picks up 14 yards. But UM is forced to punt. Cooper by the way, passed Frank Gore for third on the all-time list for true freshman on that carry, his first of the game.

N.C. State 5th Drive (1st and 10 at the N.C. State 38, 12:09 left)
- Before the Wolfpack get started. Sebastian gets the crowd hyped with his rendition of the Soulja Boy dance in front of the west end zone.
- On first down, Glenn Sharpe has an interception go through his hands. All I got to say is Canes fans ought to thank their lucky stars N.C. State is horrible.
- On third and 16, Evans picks up the first down with his legs to keep the Wolfpack drive alive. Safety Kenny Phillips nearly got there in time to stop him though.
- After another NC. State third down completion, the Wolfpack kill themselves with another penalty -- this one holding.
- On 2nd and 15, Kenny Phillips misses a tackle in the middle of the field and tight end Marcus Stone picks up 26 yards down to the UM 19.
- Meanwhile on the sideline, Kirby Freeman and Kyle Wright are playing catch. Not sure if that's a sign Wright might be warming up to get into the game.
- After N.C. State moved to within the UM 12, a third down pass is incomplete, bringing on a field goal attempt that is missed wide left by Steven Hauschka. UM catches a break and still leads 3-0.

UM's 6th Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 20, 6:37)
- On first down, Cooper runs up the middle for a 6-yard gain. After another big loss on second down, Kirby Freeman finds a wide open -- and I mide wide open -- Darnell Jenkins downfield for an 84-yard touchdown pass. That's another big play for Darnell, who caught the ball at about the 40 and beat the N.C. State safety to the end zone. Drive: 3 plays, 80 yards, 1:22. UM 10, N.C. STATE 0.
-
UM has outscored its opponents at the OB 81-0 in the first half. And that touchdown came at a good time. The defense looks like its starting to get tired.

N.C. State 6th Drive (1st and 10 at the N.C. State 34)
- On first down, N.C. State loses two yards on a run. How did N.C. State beat Virginia again?
- On second down, Darrell Blackman gets open, beating Colin McCarthy on what looked like that same little play FSU used with Preston Parker to move the ball on the Canes. He picked up 14 yards and a first down
- On the next play, Eugene spins past UM's defense for a gain of 21. They're down to the UM 32.
- On first down, Eugene catches a short pass out of the backfield -- once again in the middle of the field -- and picks up 6 yards. The Wolfpack keep exposing the middle of the field. The Canes will have to make an adjustment.
- On third and 3, Hollywood Chaminade's John Dunlap picks up another first down with a catch over the middle.
- On second down, Owen Spencer catches another ball over the middle and sneaks past the UM defense into the end zone with 2:21 left. The play is being reviewed. And its overturned. Now N.C State has a first and goal at the 1-foot line.
- Daniel Evans ends up scoring on the next play anyway on a sneak with 2:04 left. Drive: 9 plays, 66 yards, 3:11. UM 10, N.C. STATE 7.

UM 7th Drive (1st and 10 at the UM 20, 2:04)
- On first and 10, Derron Thomas gets stuffed at the line for no gain. On the next play, Thomas gets stuffed at the line again. UM fans are booing the play calling.
- On third down, Freeman lofts a jump ball downfield to Leggett that falls incomplete. But Leggett is whistled for offensive pass interference. Miami is forced to punt. Matt Bosher then gets off a 56-yard punt. N.C. State is probably going to take a knee with :10 left.

Man that was i depressin game i just came from i never seen so many one reciever set plays called. they should put in the third stringer and its offical patarik nixs doesnt know what the hell he is doing. i mean this guy keeps calling the same damn plays no matter what.

UM will never cover a big spread. They never blow anyone out. TAMU was an complete shock, which shows how bad TAMU is. They don't have a Patroits like killer instinct or attention span that can handle big leads, or their opponents. How the hell are they to take an opponent lightly? They're coming off a 6-6 season and had their arses handed to them by Oklahoma and they have the nerve to take an opponent lightly? They lose to GT 3 years in a row, and they have the nerve to take an opponent lightly? They're not good enough to take anyone lightly.

I'm frustrated with this season. I am confused as to what the coaches saw in Freeman this summer to make him a starter. And, if he was performing that well against the defense this smmer, well, it's not surprising they're playing as bad as they are now. Can anyone make a play, a sack, a pass defensed, a forced bad throw on 3rd down? Can Nix create a scheme and/or attitude that we must convert 3rd downs. Do whatever it takes to keep drives alive instead of going for TD's on 3rd and 8? Why is it, eery opponent on third down have crossing patterns, slants, combo underneath routes designed to just keep the drive alive, yet when the offense get into a 3rd down situation it looks like a Chinese fire drill, and no offense to Chinese people out there.

I hope our "future savior" isn't going to be a bust because of poor judgement....

UM quarterback Marve arrested

University of Miami freshman quarterback Robert Marve was arrested on a misdemeanor charge Wednesday night, according to the UM sports information department.

''Miami Hurricanes freshman quarterback Robert Marve met with Head coach Randy Shannon on Thursday morning regarding some personal issues that caused him to have an incident in Coconut Grove on Wednesday night,'' according to a statement released by UM.

once again they blow another game supposed to win....sad thing is we had this one and handed it to them. If the rest of the team would play as hard as Colin Mccarthy this team would be great...I know Kirby was bad but the coaches let this team down today and gave thei away. Starting to think that we are more concerned about securing a good recruiting class than coaching a winning team.

Look... we can all accept that WE WILL LOSE the rest of the games this year...

Think of it as a whole season of "pratice" games for the Freshmen and Sophmores. Next year, we'll start seeing the new recruits and what they can bring-- but we'll be relying on this year's class to take it another level...

...it will still be a 3-5 loss season in 2008.

It will be 2009 before we can truly judge what Shannon can do as a head coach.

I can't believe i just wrote what i wrote, but if you think this through logically, how can you deny that this is the best that can happen???

Congratulations to Kyle Write for securing his his starting role for the rest of the year provided he is healthy enough to play. Congratulations to to Robert Marve, Jacory Harris, or Taylor Cook as one of them has just secured their job next season.

The entire team played pretty well in comparison to their play throughout the year. As a team we had 314 yards on the ground---averaging 5+ yards per carry. Our defense certainly played no worse than usually, they are always a little soft against the pass. Even with the missed FG in OT, today was nearly as close as you can get to having a single player lose the game for you.

Kirby has really fallen apart under the spotlight this year. When he started the last few games late in the 06-07 season he looked like a completely different quarterback. Best of luck to Freeman after being completely insulted by the coaches this afternoon.

So when does Shannon bring back Soldinger. The special teams suck!!!! All of the kickers suck and we haven't seen any type of returns since Hester. Now we know why Pannuzio was fired from his previous job.

Can someone please explain how Kirby Freeman won the starting job at QB at the beginning of the year. A Division III QB can complete more passess than Freeman.

If Kirby Freeman even sets foot on the field next year, then this program will have hit an all time low and futher step back. Cook, Harris or Marve (if he is still on the team after his arrest) have to be better. I was at the U with Costa, Collins, Clement and Covington and Freeman takes the cake as probably the worst QB in UM history. How do you complete 1 pass and throw more completions to the other team??? Even an option QB (Navy QB) could do better. In the past two games Freeman has completed more passes to other teams than his own. And after today's performance Shannon might tell Freeman to go to another school after the year. He should yank his scholarship.

BTW, someone mentioned in blog much earlier this that special teams will hurt us in a close game this year. Well that came to fruitition. Hopefully, they recruit a kicker and find a soccer player in S. Florida, S. America, Europe or somewhere else that can kick a field goal.

I do not blame the coaches entirely for the loss. They are not a good football team. Shannon inherited this mess and until he changes the culture (i.e. Coker's kids graduate and brings in his players (play makers and a QB) they will not be very good. I am looking at 2009 as they year they turn the corner. So i will be patient with him and his staff. It is going to to take a year or two to the right the ship but I have confidence in Shannon.

I do not care if have 4 and 5 star recruits. Most of these guys have not lived up to the hype. Does C. Campbell play for the 'Canes anymore. I have not see or heard from him all year.

As for recruits who want to decommit after the season, I would much rather have 3 star recruits who have a chip on their shoulder and want to wear the Orange and Green than a 4 and 5 star prima donna and how think they are entitled.

I am coming fown to S. Florida and I will be at OB next week rooting the team on no matter what.

Marve is a perfect example why you recruit more than one QB. If for some reason he is off the team next year, then the Canes would be down to two scholarship freshman QB's assuming both commit and make it in. I wonder if this program has hit rock bottom yet, because it appears to continue to decline.

Miami looked like Navy today without the option and that is pathetic. How the mighty have fallen. Hey, Navy even won today and ended their 42 game losing streak against the Golden Domers. Maybe Nix can install the option now. Do think Kirby can even run that? He is good at handing off...

It will be interesting to see what Calais Campbell does after this season because he hasn't been an impact player this year. Also, impact players makes plays at this level despite being double teamed.

At least Notre Shame lost again.

Dear UM Fans,

It was my great pleasure to rip victory from your hands again today.

Big Ten Official

Good teams find a way to win. OSU, Mich, Texas...Shitty teams find a way to lose.
Miami, ND, Mich State...
Up 10 and lose by 3. Hack, gag...CHOKE!
Kirby Freeman won't see much more playing time again this year.
Dude needs to get on a Greyhound and head back to Texas.
I'm 52 and I swear I could complete 1 out of 14 and throw 3 picks.

Why is no one talking about the horrible play calling by Patrick Nix? That is what cost us the game. Yes, Kirby Freeman sucks but when the defense knows that you run on first down, run on second down, and then are forced to pass on third down, it's kind of hard to be successful. Kirby Freeman is terrible and he had a terrible day but the reason we lost today was because of Patrick Nix's playcalling. How many times does that guy call the same play? Darnell Jenkins at QB?? And he loses like 10 yards on the same play call? If Freeman is hurt, why don't you get the the walk-on QB to come in and hand off to an actual runningback? Patrick Nix is an idiot.

SHUT DOWN THE EXPECTATIONS UNTIL 2009

I feel your pain, because it's my pain, but I'm just trying to help you all accept this...

The sooner you accept the truth, the sooner it will set you free...

Free from pain of expectations and over-hyped hopes.

Let's just all pretend we get to watch 2 years of Canes practice, and that's kinda fun.

2009 is the year we go ape-sh*t about a potential NC run... but not now. We've got to let RS do his thing for the next 2 years before we clean out Coker's mess and actually establish the new dynasty....

IT's happened to everyone...

Jimmy Johnson spends 4 years to build a championship dynasty (3 NC's really belong to him)... hands off an NC team to Erickson...

Erickson wins 2 (almost 3) and then burns the program down...

Butch Davis comes in and spends 4 years to rebuild the next NC team...and hands off to Coker...

Coker wins the NC in his first year...

....then burns the program down.

Randy Shannon inherits a burned out team....and will rebuild the next great Hurricane Championship team...

Will we give him the time to do it?

Or will we demand his firing after another 7-5 year in 2008?

What can he do in 2009? 2010?

How many National Championships can we win by then?

Can we turn back the clock and have the last game in the OB played in 2002?

It's so sad to see if go out with THIS team!

As shell-shocked as I still am, I don't blame Kirby for this one. This was RS. I think he put the clamps on Nix and KF, and prayed that the D would get some turnover.

Of the three INTs, only one was a bad throw (the mistake that rec was going to run a post-flag). The other two were was a tipped ball (probably should have been caught) and one that Legget pratically jumped out of bounds to make sure he wouldn't touch the damn thing. Legget should never touch the field again.

KF was given a raw deal today. I love RS and think he is the best for this program and KF has lost it; but are telling me that you can't set this guy us for success better than that? Are you telling me that when its 3rd down, and they bring EVERYBODY that a dump to the TE won't work or play-action on 1st or 2nd down???

Anyway, its a sad day. Too much VA talk this week, and bad game-scheming by RS.

By the way, Manny, you're the best. I love that you love the canes, instead of all these dork-writers that don't have any passion to the team they write about.

See everyone at the last OB game. Lets bust some steel girders!

We are suffering mediocity because Larry Coker delayed the inevitable by firing his coaches and hanging around another year. We lost 2 recruiting classes during that time .We had several quarterbacks decommit then.
Those classes are mainly responsible for what you saw today.
That said- it seemed the coaches completely lost it today. It was truly a bizarre offensive gameplan.

The coaching staff has to take full responsibility for this one. To have two weeks to prepare a game plan and come to the stadium with 6 plays is just outright embarrassing. We can blame these players all day but the fact of the matter is this offense has weapons and Pat Nix has limited them with his unimaginative play-calling. Where were the screen plays today? With 2:04 left in the 2 quarter, were was the urgency to put some points on the board. This was a terrible coaching performance by coach Shannon and his staff today and it's true, KF stunk it up today but the coaching staff
did nothing to facilitate his success today. I hope they get it together for next Saturday and send the ol' girl out in style.

Go Canes!

I dont know what it is going to take for some to realize this....RANDY SHANNON IS NOT A HEAD COACH. HE STABBED HIS FORMER BOSS IN THE BACK AND WONT TAKE ANY OF THE BLAME HIMSELF....

Why does no one bitch that Randy did not recruit Demetrius Byrd. Yes he did not have grades but Randy could have placed him in junior college. Instead he recruited George Robinson to the U. I see everyone keep saying he is a great recruiter....Did not recruit Emmanuel Cook who is now starting at South Carolina....How about recruiting Thadeus Lewis who was in his recruiting area. This team is going nowhere fast....Yeah they beat FSU....So what...They actually coached a worse game then Randy could have. If Mickey Andrews does not decide to go to that soft zone and instead goes after Kirby, Miami has 4 wins right now......

Why Randy will never win....

1) He was not allowed to go out and hire a competent coaching staff....Nix was pretty much fired from Tech and the rest of the guys have no experience...Clint Hurt was a GA at Miami, coached one year at FIU and now coaches the Miami D-Line....That line does not look better then last year...Oh yeah...he is a great recruiter...Every kid he has landed is in his back yard (Lewis, Regis and Forston)...Miami is damn lucky that those kids are from South Florida. If not, no of them would end up at the U.

2) Recruiting---Everyone points to Randy being such a great recruiter...Why...because he finally is getting local kids to stay home...Thats his damn job. I want to see him actually win some battles for kids that are out of his recruiting area....I dont see this happening...Considering Dade County is down in 2009, we will see how great of a recruiter he is...

3) Randy was part of the so CALLER COKER PROBLEM....All these people still blaming coker...Last time I looked that entire defense was Randy's problem. Was it not the NC State qb passing on his defense...Was it not the NC State running back punking UM's defense....

Realize this.....when Randy finally gets through with this program some will be wishing Coker was back as Head Coach...If this team loses next week....they wont win either of the final two games....5-7....I knew this was a rebuilding year but last time I remembered this was not a team coming off probation.....Oh yeah...By the way it Cokers fault...What a bunch of clowns.

Shannon inherited this mess and until he changes the culture....

This is the problem I have with UM fans..RANDY SHANNON WAS PART OF THE PRIOR STAFF......RANDY SHANNON WAS PART OF THE PRIOR STAFF....DOES HE NOT GET ANY OF THE BLAME FOR THE DEFENSE.....Damn, some of you are so stupid. Randy stinks as a head coach....Guys like Luther Campbell got their way...the sad thing is Miami now will have a PR Nightmare firing this guy. At least Paul Dee is no longer around to give Shannon that dreadful extension....The faster Randy gets let go the quicker the rebuilding will happen....Randy is not a head coach.

This team has two problems lack of talent and lack of coaching. Lact of talent is obvious and there isn't enough talent on either side of the ball. I am sorry but Calais Campbell isn't a stud. Studs aren't stopped by double teams on this level and he isn't double teamed on every play.

As for coaching, I don't think NC, NCState, Georgia Tech, Alabama or Arizona State has more talent than the U, yet those teams always seem to give 100% no matter who the opponent. I don't think we can say the same for this team and that falls on the coaches. The players that give 100% should be on the field even it means playing walk ons.

Nix was a terrible hire. What's up with the direct snaps to Jenkins. Nix needs to get a clue. A direct snap should go to a running back that is used to running in traffic not a receiver who is only going to run wide. Also, how difficult is it to call pass plays to the backs out of the backfield to try to give the backs space to work in.

I think Shannon, Nix, Walton and Pannuzio have done a terrible job with this team. This team hasn't improved and plays passive on both sides of the ball. I am tired of hearing the defensive coaches state that it doesn't blitz because the players aren't ready. How about being aggressive and attacking and maybe the coaches will be surprised with the results like turnovers.

This team is at least 3 years away and it may take longer considering the lack of talent and coaching.

Anybody see a pattern here?
Stop me if you've heard this one before...
"Good afternoon folks, Brent Musburger here in the Orange Bowl on a beautiful, warm sunny Saturday afternoon where the Miami Hurricanes control their own destiny with a win here today...but, oops, don't look now, here come the Volunteers, oops, don't look now, here come the Clemson Tigers, don't look now, but here come the Hokies, here come the Yellow Jackets, here come the Wolfpack? What? Who?
Hard times for our beloved U.
Let's just hope these kids rally and at least win the last game in the OB.
Don't let her go out like a silent but deadly fart leaving all of us wondering, what the f**k was that?

Not in Denial Cane....
1) UM is a poor Private schoool. where are they going to get the money to pay a big time Coach or Coordinator?

The D-line is so bad huh? With Dixon, Holmes, Hendricks, and Joseph being injured most of the year if not all year? Playing DE's wesley, Harris, and Franlkin at Defensive Tackle? Oh yeah, that right they're supposed to be great with all these injuries. You're a Dumbass with that call!

Hurtt recruiting Regis, Lewis, and Forston??? THAT HIS DAMN JOB YOU MORON!!! He's supposed to not recruit them because they're in south FL? Another DUMBASS call!!

2) The head coach last year decided who the coordinators recruited. so how can you blame this years head coach for not recruiting those players you mentioned? and plus Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties are , year in and year out, THE HOTTEST RECRUITING BED IN THE NATION YOU JERKOFF!!!! why the hell would he focus more of his out of this area???? That's what got the last coach FIRED YOU DUMB F@#k!!!!

3) The defense played on a short field most of the day because...... A TERRIBLE QB WAS UNDER CENTER!!!! HE THREW INTERCEPTIONS (3) AND COMPLETED ONE DAMN PASS ALL DAY!!!! THE DEFENSE DID PRETTY DAMN WELL ALLOWING ONLY ONE TOUCHDOWN ALL DAY YOU D!$KHEAD!!!

STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR WHY COKERS PLAYERS CAN'T PLAY!!! IT'S NOT THE COACHES THROWING INTERCEPTIONS OR MISSING EXTRA-POINT TYPE FIELD GOALS!!! GET A CLUE BUDDY!!! AND THINK BEFORE YOU COME ON HERE WITH THIS BULLSHIT!!!

Damn 242! Strong words, but right on the mark.

I don't think you can judge these coaches based on the players they are working with. The play calling sucks at times, but it is absolutely influenced by who they are working with. They can't call all of the plays or run the schemes they want to because they don't have the horses.

You can't squeeze juice from a stone. Randy and his coaches need time to bring in better players and mold them. Same things were said about Butch and his coaches back in late 90's, before he was able to bring in his type of players.

It's going to take time. Did Kirby suck - yes. Did he try to suck - no. The guy is trying, he just doesn't have it. But there were no better options yesterday, and that is what's really sad.

1) UM is a poor Private schoool. where are they going to get the money to pay a big time Coach or Coordinator?

They may be poor but hiring within should not have been the solution. There are many other capable coaches in college football that were more qualified...Ask any coach worth a s**t about Randy...None of them are very high on him.

Listen Dumbo...If Randy had not turned away Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins, he would not be in this position right now. They took Luqman Abdallah over this kid. Randy had the final say on defensive recruits...

Hurtt recruiting Regis, Lewis, and Forston??? THAT HIS DAMN JOB YOU MORON!!! He's supposed to not recruit them because they're in south FL? Another DUMBASS call!!

Anyone should have been able to land those kids. They are in his backyard....Lets see those same kids stick now.

Once again this is why people like you have no clue....Randy recruited Eric Houston, Romeo Davis, Glenn Cook, Tavares Johnson, Lavon Ponder, Doug Wiggins, George Robinson....you want me to keep going on and on.....Those were Randy's recruits not Cokers. Cokers problem is he did not overrule Randy on these kids. If Butch was at Miami, Randy would have been told no on each and every one of those recruits...Randy also took Joe Wylie this year...Have you see him play. The kid is a MAC type player just like Andrew Smith from Monarch....Do you need more...Randy said yes to Demetri Stewart...he had to since the kid was a linebacker and thats what Randy coaches. Please, if you are going to say something back it up with facts.

The defense did a good job....If you say so...Tom O'Brien pretty much shut it down in overtime because he knew the game was over. NC St stinks and they moved the ball when they needed to on Miami's defense...Was it the 27-0 lead by UNC at halftime that got you impressed with Randy's defense...This guy has been exposed against LSU in the Suger Bowl, then by Louisville 2x...He made a name for himself against FSU....If not for a total brain fart by MA this year, Miami would have lost to FSU as well. In every game that Miami has lost, their defense at the end of the day was just as much at fault. But hey...he is the MAN. Has he ever made one adjustment as a coach...

Blame Coker all you want. In three years are you still going to blame coker. WTF does Coker have to do with Miami losing to NC and NC State. Those two teams have a losing record...Did you give Coker the credit for Miami beating FSU...Oh thats right...he is only to blamed. Its his fault the team stinks....

I think it is telling that Jenkins says guys were afraid to make mistakes and Freeman was "nervous " the whole game. That speaks to the motivational tactics being used and My hope is that Coach is as tough on his assistants as far as "unnacceptabe" play calling/preperation/motivational tactics as he is on his players for their mistakes.

You have no clue... Assistant coach HAS NO FINAL SAY ON ANYTHING FOOTBALL RELATED!@!! THE HEAD COACH YOUR MORON!!! THAT'S WHY HE'S THE HEAD COACH!!!!

How does obrien shut it down when they were on frst and goal with a minute left in the game. You're just confused son.

And the old head coach could land players like these in his backyard because he never stepped out into his backyard. He let the players like Santonio Holmes and the Blades boy get away to OSU and PITT

And talknig about kids who are "MAC" type players. I gues the quarterback from miami high (Roscoe Parrish), and the track guy who played on a wish bone type offense at Carol City (Santana Moss). they're MAC players too right?Butch recruited them. And oh yeah,... butch was a defensive coach!

Who is Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins... WHO ARE THEY???

IT'S RANDY SHANNON'S FAULT????

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

The guy just took over in February-- hired an entire new staff, and you blame this year's poor performance on the coaches?

You can criticize lot's of things about this team, but if you think a coach and a coaching staff can turn around a 6-6 team within 6 months, you have no concept of organized team sports-- in fact i bet anyone who thinks this way has never played organized sports...

Patrick Nix's fault for a bland gameplan??
You can only call the plays that the players can make...

And you know what? Nix DID his job-- he got 315yards running in a game where he KNEW Kirby could damage us. He game the kid 4 F*CKING passes and the kid throws 3 interceptions...

And some of you are asking why we weren't running screens and other fancy pass plays???

I totally understand what NIX did-- RUN THE BALL...

He had no idea that KIRBY could so THOROUGHLY F*CK the team with so few passes...

DEFENSE did what they were supposed to do-- held these guys to 4 field goals after playing in the hole (due to the UM turnovers)

OFFENSE line did it's job, opening holes for 315 yards of running. O-LINE did their job keeping pressure off Kirby so he can throw passes.

KICKER FAILED at 2 easy field goals-- but we knew our kicking game has been a weak point the entire season..

This loss comes down to FAILURE OF PASS OFFENSE by ONE MAN---> KIRBY.

ADMIT IT NOW YOU KW HATERS-- KW would have lead this team to a win...

IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO ONE THING AND THIS GOES FOR BOTH THE DOLPHINS AND HURRICANES:

IF AN ORGANIZATION SLACKS OFF ON RECRUITING, BRINGING IN TALENT, CONSTANTLY EVALUATING, CONSTANTLY THINKING OF HOW TO MAKE THE TEAM BETTER, I AM TALKING ABOUT REALLY DOING YOUR JOB, GRINDING IT OUT 24/7! THIS IS THE PRODUCT YOU SEE OUT ON THE FIELD.

LAZY COACHES BRING IN POOR PLAYERS, LAZY RECRUIERS BRING IN POOR PLAYERS, LAZY EVALUATORS BRING IN POOR TALENT.

THE CANES WILL BE FINE NOW BECAUSE THEY NOW HAVE A SYSTEM OF RECRUITING WHERE WITH COKER THEY DIDNT. YOU HAVE TO GO UT AN SEE GUYS, STUDY, PICK THE RIGHT PLAYERS FOR YOUR TEAM AND SYSTEM. AS YOU CAN SEE THE DOLHPINS (IN DRAFTS) AND HURRICANES (IN RECRUITING) HAVE NOT DONE SO FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS.

LAST THOUGHT: WHILE I WAS WATCHING THE GAME AND LISTENING TO LARRY COKER, I COULD NOT HELP BUT THINK HOW THIS GUY FEELS AFTER BRINGING IN 2 OF THE WORST QB'S IN MIAMI HISTORY.

I was pretty much done with this blog until I read Pacific Canes post.
Coaching does make a difference. Good coaches do make a difference. Bad coaches can kill you. Insert Charlie Weiss and Cam Cameron here.
Butch Davis, Tom O'Brien, Pete Carrol, Bob Stoops, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban. All these guys had an immediate impact on their respective teams.
I said this from day one. This program is a direct reflection of the leadership at this university. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to go back to when things changed here at the U. When Donna Shalala took the gig, it's gone south since. She offered the job to Barry Alverez and he said, "Thanks, but No." That should have told us all something. And, one more thing. Randy Shannon is no head coach and he's not such a hot recruiter either. As pointed out earlier, he was exposed as the D coordinator and now is getting schooled by better coaches in his first year.

DAVE:

Thanks for reading my post-- but i never said "coaching doesn't matter" is said it takes even great coaches time to turn around a poor program...

You i think you misread me..

"Spurrier the Genious" went 7-5 his first year at UF 1989, 10-2 in 1990, 10-2 in 1991, 8-4 in 1992, 10-2 in 1993, 9-3 in 1994, 10-1 in 1995 and winning the National Championship...

SO it took him 7 years to get to the Championship...

You are also "wrong" about Butch-- he didn't turn the losing around immediatly either...he DID TURN AROUND THE RECRUITING...which takes 3-4 years to be revealed (which it did for Erickson)

Butch's record: 8-3 in 1995, 9-3 in 1996, 5-6 in 1997, 9-3 in 1998, 9-4 in 1999, 10-1 in 2000

(then he left for the Browns, and Erickson immediately wins in 2001 with his boys)

I can go on about all the other coahces you mentioned too. No one turned a team around to a "Top 10" college power within 1-2 years. What's important in what i said actually is that COACHING DOES MATTER in the LONGTERM-- that's why i fault the current mediocrity of this team on COKER-- based on his recruiting and coaching the past 4 years.

SO my post was about GIVING SHANNON TIME... because i was tired of all the IGNORANT posts about "FIRE SHANNON AND NIX NOW" talk...

It comes from ignorant fans who don't know enough about how college football history and the coaching process works...

They just expect wins no matter what's going on...

Well wake up and smell what the COKER has been cooking for 4 years....fried dog sh*t!

YUM YUM !!!

Dave, I agree with you 100%. I just wish all these other people could see the same thing. I know it's frustration though.Randy will have this team back were they belong soon top 5.Coker screwed this team up. He was handed a fully loaded team and all he had to do is continue reloading and he didn't do it. Did anyone noticed that we started losing when coker recruits started playing.e.g B.Berlin, R.Moore, A.Jolla, T.Moss I could go on and on, so if you all think Coker did not screw up this program look at recruits I just mentioned and think again. Randy needs time 2-3 years and if this continues then I'll agree with the firing.

The quarterback lost the game! The seniors are STILL beating his as$ for losing their last homecoming!

242 Cane has been banned from canespace because he's a trouble maker!

Randy has a top 5 recruiting class next year . He has been doing some dumb things like punishing guys and letting infeior ones in the game.

you guys were saying the same things last year about Rich Olson the offense accordinator, but he couldn't win with this sorry Coker talent and Randy and Nix can't do it either. we need ballers, playmakers on offense and head hunters on defense. Randy needs time to get those types of players

Playmakers??? They're on the way. Let the witch hunt begin...

All the Shannon haters will be eating crow next year.

Steve, are you saying that Randy should not punish the players when they break team rules and let them play anyway?

Pac Cane...Thanks for responding to my post.
It's good to know people actually read somebodies posts other than their own.
I know it takes time to rebuild. We've all been through it.
It's just the way we lose. I mean other than the OU beatdown and the NC meltdown, we just can't finish. I don't mind losing a couple of games a year. 9-3, 8-4...But it has almost become expected and predictable for us to choke every year down the stretch.
What is this, the 5th year in a row we've had the opportunity to close the ACC and we've gotten beat AT home...Tenn, Clemson,
VT, GT and now NC State...For the love of Pete man, somebodies has to step up and close one of these things.
I hope I'm wrong about RS but I still think it goes above him with this administration.
Go Canes.

242...U were banned from Canespace for being the obnoxious jerk that you are and trying to pick fights with other bloggers for no apparent reason. We will not miss you that's for sure.

But don't worry you can still play cyber bully here and get your kicks that way. I'm sure the bloggers here will appreciate your contributions like these gems:

Because 242 suffers from ED and cannot see others happy.

Everytime the canes lose, he goes to all the boards and says: "I told you so".
