Hurtt has message for recruits

On a night when the Hurricanes were embarrassed, UM recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt had a message for the many high school recruits in UM's losing lockerroom. And basically, it was this: Get your gear and get ready because you're going to play next season.

"I'd tell them hurry up and get in their mind right now that when they get here next spring or in the fall, hurry up and get your equipment fitted because they’re going to be on the field right away," Hurtt told me in a private moment.

"There’s a culture about this team we got to change. And we’re going to start with the guys with who we recruit. Not because we feel that they’re great players, but because of their mentality and the kind of players we’re recruiting. That’s the biggest thing for us and I would tell them, just make sure they hurry up and get to campus as soon as possible because they got to get fitted and ready to go. Because all of them are going to play.

I asked Hurtt why he believed these potential recruits could really changed the losing culture at UM.

"Everything is about evaluation in recruiting and the guys we’re evalutating we feel are bosses. Guys we feel are hogs, guys who are competitive. Guys, that come from winning programs and they understand what it takes to win. And that’s the reason they’re being recruited, not just because they’re great players because we believe they have a desire to win. Point blank."

It will be interesting to see what happens. UM's 48-0 loss was embarrassing. But in the brief conversations I had with recruits -- linebacker Jordan Futch and cornerback Brandon Harris (a target) -- they didn't seem to bothered. In fact, both seemed happy, like they were licking their chops and couldn't wait to get here next year. UM has to hope that feeling lasts long. The rest of the season is not going to get any easier.

Check back later tonight or early tomorrow for all of the audio I collected in the locker room including Shannon's press conference and thoughts from Darnell Jenkins, Kyle Wright, Derrick Morse and Calais Campbell.

Not knowing your info before you make a statement means that you "IGNORE" the truth.

UM does not lead in arrest as you say. Do us a favor, use the mass that is located inside your cranium and find research on number of arrest in the last 20 years for NCAA DI schools.
When you have the answer please come back and like a man that you are supposed to be: Apologize!!

Freaking punk, go back and root for your hick team!!

Easy fix here. Recruit some O line hauses...
Our O line is weak....KW nad KF are both scared to daeth for a reason. They know what's coming. Go get a couple of big backs.
I'm talking 240-260# fullbacks to lay some guys out. Then we can insert Coop or JJ. Time to rebuild alright but we need some size. We look like Pee wee's out there.
Com'on...Big fast Dudes V Small slow dudes. It's no brainer.

these U coaches r horrible

they're just basically telling the current players to quit

y do think they didn't even show up on sat

Where's Randy Shannon? Anybody heard or seen this guy yet? Why is Clint Hurtt talking to the media? Is he our spokesperson now?
This guy is sending the wrong message to the current players and the incoming recruits. SHUT UP YOU HONK. Where's Shannon?!

I'm incredibly disappointed in what this blog has become. Manny, please cut it down and move onto practice/recruiting/player updates. Where'd all the true cane fans go?

Yo...what a bunch of retards we have as fans. I can't stand the argument that we should stop recruiting all these star athletes and how Butch brought in "winners"....hey jackasses, alot of recruiting is just plain old luck. Sometimes, you get great classes and the players blow..others times you get an Ed Reed or Ray Lewis, and they turn out great.

Everyone in the country wanted Kyle Wright, Leggett, Spencer Adkins, Kylan Robinson, Tyrone Moss, Ian Symonnette, Sam Shields, Matt Bosher, Reggie Youngblood, and a million other players......but guess what, they aren't that good (they aren't coached well either to be fair).

But now if we got out and some of the recruits turn into great players they'll be the "UM type".......Hey, anyone who goes to UM is a UM type. If they don't pan out then cheer and shut the heck up. And hope the next class gets better (and more importantly the coaching, which sucks right now). Bob may not have been too nice but he's right.......stop crapping on 18-20 year olds and root for your team. Or do what most of our fans do, sit there and act like you deserve a winner yet we get 30K at the games.

Yo....and one more thing.....Hurtt is an idiot. I'm tired of our coaches talking this crap about our current players, like the new ones will just come in and dominate. We got bascially one true freshman from their first class really contributing on a bad team...so what the heck does he know.

Why do so many posters give Shannon a free pass? Wasn't he part of last years team? If is such a great recruiter, why didn't he recruit great players in the prior years, he was a coach at UM. Also, isn't this years defense his defense and BTW - they suck. Shannon was a horrible hire! However, we need to face the fact that no one else wanted the job. UM is not a premier program any longer. Next year will be same. What we need is to clean house - starting with Shannon. Let's start the fire Shannon bangwagon and please stop making excuses for him. UM will not win with Shannon as the Head Coach. Coker wasn't the only problem with last year's team. Shannon was part of the problem not the solution!!!

Having the coaches bash the players is not a sign of leadership. Shannon has not motivated this team. Shannon keeps saying that the players have to trust the coaches. Well you have to earn trust. When they start bringing in all these new players with the expectation to that they are going to win, they are setting them up for dissapointment. Right now Shannon has not fostered an attitude that is condusive to winning. I hope that the new recruits buy into his system and get the job done. Jimmy Johnson did the same thing, he was a tyrant. But Jimmy was a genious and a Psychologist and new how to push the right buttons at the right time. Shannon better take a psychology course because the way I see it, he has lost control of this team.

Shannon and his staff need to coach who he has on the team and not comment on future canes. When current players here those comments how you think they are going to react. There is know is excuse for this team to be losing this amount of games! He made a comment early this year "if miami goes 8-4 he would _ _ _ _ _ himself." He really felt this team will compete for a ACC championship or National championship. That tells me it is not the players.

THE TRUTH IS THAT IN THIS HIGH PROFILE TIME OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL THE CALIBER OF PLAYERS AT THE U ARE GOING TO PLAY HARD IN THIS TYPE OF GAME REGARDLESS OF THEIR FEELINGS BEING HURT BY THE STAFF, ESPECIALLY THE SENIORS. THE SAD PART IS THAT WITH EQUALITY IN D1 PROGRAMS THESE DAYS, THE MAJOR SUCCESS DIFFERENCE IS COACHING. I'M TRYING TO STAY POSITIVE, BUT SAW NO ADJUSTMENTS, NO INNOVATION, NO MATCH-UP CHANGES, ON EITHER SIDE OF THE BALL DURING ANY GAMES THIS YEAR. UN-PREPARED. FSU BEAT THEMSELVES, AND A&M SEEMED TO BE COACHED WORSE THAN US. I REALIZED BEFORE THE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON THAT THIS IS A NEW COACHING STAFF AND THEY WOULD NEED TIME TO LEARN HOW TO WORK TOGETHER. BUT THEIR NOT "COACHING", THAT IS EVALUATING WHAT YOU HAVE AND PUTTING THEM IN SITUATIONS TO SUCEED REGARDLESS OF TALENT,INJURIES, AND ABILITY AGAINST A SPECIFIC OPPONENT. CHANGE PLAYER ATTITUDE, BENCH STAR PLAYERS, INJURIES, KEEP THAT SH**T OUT OF THE PAPERS AND PROVIDE WHATEVER TEAM YOU FIELD A PLAN TO SUCCEED. WE ALL KNOW WHAT DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT RESULTS DEFINES, AND IT'S NOT COACHING. STICK YOUR NECK OUT COACHES, LIKE THESE KIDS, FANS, ALUMNI, AND THIS U. START COACHING NOW AND GET A HEAD START ON THE NEW BEGINNING THAT ALL ARE EXPECTING. GO CANES

Dear High School Phi Beta Kappas Considering The U(LOL), Go back and look at the games played in that dump this year and don't even watch the play on the field. Instead check out the number of people in the stands(They could hold the Times Square New Year's Eve Celebration in the upper deck and not be over crowded). There are MAYBE 35,000 hard core people in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties who could give a rat's bottom about the U(That initial again!!). Now if the U(Who started that silly stuff anyway??) is contending for National championships the front runners will come out, however, since the U(Does that stand for Ugly??) is about 4 years from contending for ACC Championships--and it won't be under Randy Shannon--wouldn't you be better served matriculating somewhere safe and where people will actually fill the stands to watch you play in an ON CAMPUS STADIUM??? Yes, they do make on campus stadium. Of course FAU and FIU will have ones before the UUUUUUUUUUUU.

Lou Vales, one thing or things FIWHO and FAWHO will never have is 5 GOLDEN RINGS!!!! Why would U loosers need a 50,000 seat stadium when U can't get 5,000 people to show up at the game? If your games were free they still would'nt show up. U and one-hundred other schools have better facilities but do U have the rings? Thought not, bitch.

John is a clueless CLOWN. LOLOLOLOLOLOL Puss!

Randy Shannon did NOT recruit Warren Sapp
posted by: Luther Cambell

Shannon may have recruited 25 other pro-bowlers like Ray Lewis,J.Vilma, Ed Reed, etc, but that don't mean shit cause he did'nt recuit W.Sapp, right Fluke Cambell? Meanwhile check Coker's recruiting resume:

Brock Berlin
Kyle Wright
Kirby Freeman

Well, U get the picture.

Remember Jimmy Johnson was strict, controlling and ruthless [with everybody] and a great recruiter.
Sound familiar.

The program's problems start at the the top and filter down, i.e. Prez Donna, Dee... Hey, I know, let's move to the ACC!

And the current coaches need to motivate players, not throw them under the bus. He has been around here long enough to realize that.

The current set of coordinators SUCK, especially Nix. We don't have the "Calvin Johnson" guy to throw to EVERY play!! Duh!

And alot of the 4 and 5 star recruits? Losers! Bring in guys that WANT to play, and that can actually cathc a pass, and kicka field goal, and be leaders, which is also a reflection of the coaching staff.

So what can we expect? Obviously new kids in new positions next season, so why not start them now. Oklahoma's QB is a freshman, and look at him! So it also obvious that next year will be a re-building season too, so we shouldn't expect much.

Now is Shannon head coching material? Time will tell. I think there needs to be some coordinator changes before head coaching changes.

And bring in a smart AD, and school president to attract people that want to be here.

Things aren't going to change overnight, and with games at Va Tech and BC to finish the season, it does not look encouraging. At least if I see some new guys in there, I'll know not to expect much, unlike now just getting more disappointed each week. Zero points at home? Jeez!

Hangin on by a thread!

Sick of all U racist trying to blame the BLACK COACH when we need to blame our SORRY, WHITE QB'S!

Hey Lou! If you can show me where they can put a stadium on campus then more power to you! Thought not! Idiot!

Randy Shannon will be run out of Miami in two years after he wins 4 games in the next TWO seasons. This guy is a mental midget.

Canester-Nip you're a moron. You're the typical bandwagon fan that joined maybe 5 years ago and talk without knowing any fact.
When you talk about Larry Coker's recruit add to that list the following names.

Jeremy Schokey
Frank Gore (It was Coker who put his name on the line b/c Gore is considered lower than Learner Disabled)
Ken Dorsey
Joaquin Gonzalez
Brian McKinney
Roscoe Parrish (Who Shannon never recruited being his area coordinator and whom up to this date doesn't speak to. Have you ever seen Roscoe talking about Randy?.

None of the guys you mentioned were recruited by RS.

Vilma was signed by Don Soldinger and Ray Lewis and Ed Reed were signed by Butch (yes the same Butch Davis who people criticized for not being a game day coach, but kicked Randy's Ass this year).

If you're going to blog get your facts straight.

By the way this is the first time in UM's history where a head coach (If you can call Randy a head coach)and a buffoon (Clint Hurtt) have openly criticized players by their name. That's lack of class, integrity and it shows how insecure he and the whole staff are.

Yes, they do make on campus stadium. Of course FAU and FIU will have ones before the UUUUUUUUUUUU.

Posted by: Lou Vales | November 12, 2007 at 11:05 PM why is an on-campus stadium the holy grail of college football?

hey Lou Vales, I smell gaturd ...

not enough land, access or students to support on-campus eyesore ...

NIMBY

I cant believe I drove over 500 miles to watch that beating that our U took. I have never seen a team just give up like they did. You don't lose a game 48-0 at home without a team effort. I Bleed Orange and Green, but for the first time in my life I am embarrassed to wear my jerseys in public. I hope our Team has enough heart to pull an upset to make us bowl eligible but I think that is a real stretch. If we do somehow pull an upset in the next 2 games expect the Smurf turf again, what a joke. I sat at the game Saturday just looking around asking my self what has happened to this once great program. It seems like yesterday I was watching the Mia vs. OSU national title game. We have lost more than our swagger these past few years, we have lost our respect around college football. No one fears the U helmets any more like they use to. Not all of them but a lot of the players take that U on their helmets for granted and have no idea what it takes to win. Our QB play is straight garbage, I am tired of the excuses and the erratic play. These two may have had talent at one time but their confidence is totally destroyed and they should be embarrassed by their college careers. I have backed these 2 QB's in the past and really thought KW had enough pride and ability left to win us one more game. I just hope that this program can turn it around in the next 2 years. I still have faith in RS and hope that our target recruits understand that they will have a chance to play earlier at the U if they practice and perform well. This potential group we have coming in looks like winners and they know what it takes to win. We need as many QB recruits as possible and hopefully one of them can play football. The great thing about college football is that you can rebuild a team quick and clean house a lot faster than the pro's. Lets focus on the potential recruits we are bringing in next year and bring our program back to respectability. Fans stay motivated and have hope for the future because RS is old school and knows what it takes to win and what kind of recruits to bring in. BRING IN THE NEXT CLASS……..

hey Lou Vales aka grimy gaturd ... who wants to live in gainesville aka hogtown? FEH

God, I just hope Marve pans out, or Kirby pulls his head out of his behind. I hope all Marve's off-field troubles translate into an on-field focus.

Do you really think Jacory Harris or the kid from TX will really walk in and take the job from day 1?

You can say whatever you want about these recruits (Kyle Wright was the #1 QB in the nation in '04) but let's see some results.

Give me a 1 star kid who will help inject some some swagger into this life-less team.

what's the use in bashing Coach Shannon? like it or not, he will fulfill his contract barring a meltdown ... PILING ON

What are all your grades/reasons for the top 3 coaches thus far????

Shannon (D-) - The only reason that this isn't an F is because of his recruiting ability, but recruiting can only take you so far. Those players need to be coached like men, not told what to do like children. So far he has made 2 horrible decisions in Walton and Nix. He has proven to be not a good gameday coach either except for a few trick plays that have been run successfully and aggressive 4 down calls. This team has essentially quit on Shannon a couple games ago, I guess when they beat FSU they thought the season was over.

Nix (F) - Nix has run about 5-10 plays all year by my count. No men in motion, no chemistry with WR because they are always rotated in and out all the time (When was the last time Chad Johnson or Steve Smith came out of the game???). I understand he is limited with QB play, but run pass plays that any QB can throw like screens, slants, and comebacks. Quick 3 step drops and release. Have we seen any of this? No creativity on offense and it scares no one. The offense is worse than last year easily.

Walton (F) - Has this man called a blitz besides the 4 qtr of the FSU game? You can only run straight up man to man for so long before the oppostion has a beat on it, plue the players aren't at the level of being able to go head up with no safety help, etc. How about mixing in some zone and blitzes every once in awhile? The defense is much worse than last year with practically the same personnel. How can that happen???

As the saying goes, football boils down to BLOCKING and TACKLING. Fundamentals. 48-0? Are you kidding?

You can't hang the goose egg part of that score totally on the QB/offense. Did the defense TACKLE anyone? I thought the defense was supposed to be this team's strong point ??? They hang 48 on us in the OB's swan song? Where the *&%$ is the pride?

One season does not a career make, so I will give Shannon some rope. But young teams are supposed to get better as the season goes on -- we seem to have gone backward.

PS: To Randy: stop blaming the players. You are the captain of the ship -- shows some balls and take the heat.

Listen, Shiano was not head coach material when he first started and slowly built a great team and that is at Rutgers.

Shannon in my opinion will build something special because he cares, has passion, and works hard. He does not give me the same feeling that Wanndstat, Cam Cameron, Larry Coker gave me when I saw them coach.

Shianos Record at Rutgers:

2001 2-9
2002 1-11
2003 5-7
2004 1-5
2005 7-5
2006 11-2
2007 6-4

Give him time and remember he does not play and neither do his coaches. Vince Lombardi could not coach this team into a winner.

Our defense is good enough to win, our offensive line is good enough to win, but without a good QB we are handcuffed. They both pretty much wouldnt start for FIU.

I say that we give this coaching staff one more year to prove whether they are ready for the "Big-Time"... Next year they have FSU, VA Tech, BC, etc at home... Also we have Freshmen that have not played this year that could be productive next season, along with the potential star recruits we have coming in... I really have a good feeling about Marve next season and hopefully the freshmen QB's coming in will give him some solid competition... The running backs next season such as Baby J, Cooper and McNeal are going to possibly be the best running trio in the country!! We also have some young talent on the Defense a well, so lets hope that we can at least make a bowl this season and come out ready to play next season...

I like what the coaching staff is doing by talking up next season's recruiting class because it does two things... First it puts in the minds of the recruits that if you come to the U, your going to get some playing time, and second it should motivate the players that are already here to play hard and be productive or you'll be sitting on the pine while some true freshman is in your spot...

I am the biggest Homer in Miami and I root hard for every team in this town, but my first love is the Cane's football team... Go Canes!!!

418 yards of offense allowed. That ugly number pretty well sums it up. Sure, the offense stunk, and there was no sign of our supposed excellent trio of runners.

The thing I find funny i, why isn't anyone here sniping at the defence? You'd need a calculator to track all of the blown assignments. Fundamentals...blocking, tackling, being where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there. The basics.

The Canes WEREN'T READY TO PLAY THE GAME, and as a result, were blown out of the stadium by a well-coached team.

Star recruits are fine, but give me some kids with heart who don't quit.

IS IT 2008 YET!!!! We need recruits who play with heart, Clint Hurtt sent a good message to the incoming recruits and players that are here. I think we have a good group coming in and I am sure they are licking their chops because playing time should come quick. Maybe RS should take the U's off this years team's helmets next because I don't think some of these guys deserve it. I cant believe what I watched Saturday, do these players have any pride or heart. If I didn't drive 8 hours to watch the game, I would have walked out at half time. The OB was disrespected Saturday by the Canes team but I don't have to live with that, the players do. I hope the leaders of this team step up to the plate and get in the face of the players who are dogging it, I know I would. Its one thing to lose but to just give up like I saw Saturday is a true sign of weakness. That U on your helmets means something to the CANES nation so if you don't want to play hard than get the hell out of the way and please transfer. These last 2 games will either make men out of these players or make them one of the worst teams in the History of the U. Finish this year with some pride and don't make things worse than they are. To the players on this team that are giving 100% all the time I want to thank you and just hang in there and with the help of some new faces get this thing turned around.

Hurtt needs to look in the mirror. These players are getting worse as the season progresses. Great showing by Canes fans on Saturday night. Most stayed til the 4th and I swear, even when we were down by 30+, that place would have gone crazy if that team could've made just one big play.

Guys,

Do me a favor and not respond to Suge White or notindenialcanesfan because what you guys are doing is exactly what they want. They obviously don't have a life. Just ignore the stupidity.

P.S.: Suge and notindenial don't bother answering this post cause not gonna repsond to whatever nonsense and idiotic statement you are about to make.

Canester-Nip,
Who addresses anyone with YO! Your a loser and I am not racist just talk facts. Randy is black, a fact and you think cause of that kids are gonna respect him more. Give me a break! Everyone screams when black coaches don't get interviews but when they lose there off-limits like white coaches. Randy has no self-discipline (check his past) but he is suppose to instill it in young kids. Your a typical loser. And Randy has blamed 2 white QB's and the fans blame Coker another white man. Sounds like the culture down there. Canester does that mean your a gangster or a molester.

What I find funny is you calling Suge a racist....I guess it is alright for Randy to tell every kid in Dade County to help a brother out. Yes that is his selling point. He is all telling young brothers that one of their own kind has never been a position like this before. Randy has sold you fools a bunch of fools gold...If 48-0 was not bad....wait to this weekend. Kids are begging to leave UM.....

The coaches and the players should be ashamed of the way that they have played this entire year!!! Randy Shannon looked like he wasn't even sure where the heck he was on Saturday. You can not blame the QB's for all the problems that the team is having, when Miami played in the Sugar Bowl against LSU, I watched Lance Leggett look like a player who had no idea how to catch a football and 2 years later, he has shown no improvement, he should have been asked to leave after the Sugar Bowl. These coaches did not have this team prepared for any game that they have played this season, and this past week was the absolute worst game I have ever watched. Kyle Wright has to have players want to catch his passes, Kyle Wright has to have players that want to make plays, players that have heart, I don't see that drive in the coaches or the players. Shame on the coaches if they are blaming the players, they are after all the "Daddy's" and the daddy's are suppose to teach their kids. This coaching staff has shown me nothing and I agree that since Donna Shalalalalalalala came on board the Football recruiting has declined and the team has progressively declined also.

Remember the days when Miami fans would say...hey who cares about recruiting rankings, we take diamonds in the roughs and make them into stars...Now they get stars out of high school and the kids stink. Miami fans took pride in their coaches developing talent better then anyone else. What happened to those days. DENIAL, DENIAL, DENIAL...Its like a substance abuser...you must admit something is wrong before being able to recover. Miami fans are in denial. It is time they start realizing the program has problems...When they do this all be alright.

IS SUGE SHORT FOR SUGAR?

I NEVER SAID BLACK COACHES DESERVE BETTER TREATMENT, JUST FAIR TREATMENT! U CAN'T CONSIDER FIRING ANYBODY BLACK OR WHITE AFTER 1 SEASON. WHAT TICKLES ME THE MOST IS THE FACT THAT ALL THE COKER-HATERS ARE NOW COKER-LOVERS AFTER ONLY 10 GAMES UNDER SHANNON. EVEN STEVIE WONDER COULD SEE THAT THE CANES HAD BEEN STEADILY DIGRESSING YEAR AFTER YEAR UNDER COKER, ESPECIALLY AFTER BROCK THE FLOP BOARDED OUR DOCK!

With fans like the above, no wonder current recruits are bailing out.

How can you place the blame totally on Kyle Wright? What makes an outstanding QB great? Himself? Not hardly! Remember: it all starts with the line!! Today BC sacked him 4 times! Do you think Kyle went out there on the field and said, "this time I want to get sacked!" Did you see how many passes were dropped today by his recievers? Get this and get it straight. Kyle was the most highly regarded QB in his senior year at high school. What he needed to carry on and produce at Quarterback U was a line and a couple of receivers that can catch! The rest would have been history. Am I wrong? Then get this. In the long line of great quarterbacks at The U, he is rated 4th! And that was with a terrible team. Why was it terrible? Guess... let me give you a hint. His initials are LC. It's all about recruiting. It's the name of the game and he didn't recruit properly. He won all those games and championships with Butch Davis' recruits. As they said on the former "Cokermustgo.com" website... the team has be Cokerized!
