Shannon: "I want stability with this staff"

I asked him the question. He gave me his answer. Randy Shannon said he wants stability with his coaching staff.

I know many of you have asked the questions -- will changes be made on this staff following this season? Shannon, who is still speaking during his press conference, basically just said he will not make any changes on this staff unless somebody decides to leave for another program. I'll have more after this press conference is over.

But basically he went at length about how important stability was to UM's success in the past. He said the coaching changes made the last three years affected players like quarterback Kyle Wright. He said when UM was at its best, it had the same staff together. Maybe he has a point. But for those of you wondering if defensive coordinator Tim Walton or offensive coordinator Patrick Nix are going to be doing something different next year, don't look for Shannon to make that change.

- As for the team, Shannon said Graig Cooper is expected to practice today. Shannon said Cooper will go "three-fourths."

Canes 4 Life

There's nothing wrong with the coaching staff unless you count recruiting players with less talent than we're used to seeing on the field.

I can't be the only one who has thought "These guys are really trying out there, they just don't have the horses to keep up with some of these teams." - And by some of these teams I don't mean Oklahoma or Virginia Tech, I mean GT, UVA, UNC and NC State.

Different players perform differently for different coaches. For people to criticize some of these kids who've been under 3 different OC's over the last 3 years, and expected to master their schemes, they should take a breath and give it time. The guys Randy is recruiting I'm sure he's targeting for a number of reasons. I know he believes they have the winning mentality and overall trust in his ability to coach, which should add up to good results on the field over time. Yes, I said OVER TIME. It was wrong of a lot of "canes fans" to expect a marvelous return this season after a 7-6 record last year. It is also wrong to place sooo much weight on this years incoming recruiting class. I beleive it will take at least 3 years for Randy Shannon's staff to start producing at their peak performance. Sure, alot of people may have lost patience after this season's results, but it ultimately weeds out those that are not real fans. I wore my canes shirt the day after Virgina AND VT. I have faith in Shannon. And, from what Manny has mentioned in earlier blogs, so do the alumni. He's played on winning teams, coached on winning teams, and knows the mentality it takes to be a winning team. I dont believe there should be any coaching changes this year. We have to give it time. I will admit that some of the recruits Coker coached haven't "Developed" the way some of the past athletes of the U have, but now we get to see what experience Shannon can bring to the table and if his staff can "develope" their players to win (and not in any way accept loses). I'll be following everything closesly with recruiting though. I want to add that some of these guys on the fence with committing to UM because they're interested in LSU may be coming back if Michigan and LSU dont hurry on what coaching changes may be taking place. When Florida canned Zook a few years ago, Florida AND Utah lost some good recruits because they dragged their feet on picking a coach (and we all know players dont want to go where there is instability). So...let time tell. But, canes fan or not, I believe we are moving in the right direction regardless of how fast it may be. PATIENCE.

The lack of experience on this coaching staff show by the lack of game time preparation. He says he will not fire anyone, but I'm sure he will add a few assistant coaches.

I'm tired of hearing these young men being blamed for everything.

I loveddddd the canes but tim walton does not have the mojo to run a hurricanes defense, has to least step aside for asst def cord, and bring a knowledgeable grey beard in... We need grey beards on or staff!!! at least bring in M. stoops, Arizonia, d .cord, or the defensive cordinator from Auburn, he has that flare about him, and I also think we could probally snatch up the D. cord from USF, they are soo athletic on D kinda resemble us back in the day!!! Maybe the d. cordinator from Tampa bay Bucs......

Hopefully Tim Walton get's his head out of his arse, and steps down. I can't remember the last time where one team finds a weakness and exploits it all friggin day long. Who here remembers the last time UM was burned so many times with screen passes? or TE's to the flats? It's not a lack of talent, it's a lack of preparation. These boys almost seem to be regressing. Get rid of Walton, or be prepared for shootouts/blowouts next year.

LOL... i wonder when he finally gets canned himself if he'll get retrospective and wonder if that was the right call...

Shannon will play out his contract and then if we haven't made dramatic turns, then hopefully the new AD is not Shalala's lackey and could care less about the athletic programs sucking wind. Sooner of later, the ACC might come back to us close to contract renewal and inform us they aren't interested in another piss poor football team dragging down the conference. Rightfully so. We have become Temple. So Randy has 2 more year. If not, then hopefully the AD will go find someone FAR outside the program and get us back on track. Randy shows little in the way of understanding what a HC is and what to look for.

how does it feel to want? ...cause the fans want wins... the fans want championships... the fans want a competitive team... the fans want glory... the fans want to stop feeling downright embarrassed after each and every fricken game...

Walton is an absolute joke...

i want to suffer through as little of Shannon as possible... where does that get me exactly?

Shannon is the blind leading the blind with no hope of a cure to his blindness...

Shannon probably hears the fat lady somewhere off in the distance already...

Shannon is to UM right now what ice was to the Titanic...

i firmly believe that a championship in ANY form will forever be Shannon's white whale as an HC...

It is possible that this staff was put together foremost as a recruiting staff. If you remember back when it was reported that most of the staff held recruiting coordinator positions at the schools that they came from. If so it shows in game preparation, Shannon came keep them but add ad D coOrdinator , a proven guy, that should be the min. added. One more yr for Nix, if he does not produce. I am sure that shannon just does not want to mess up the recruiting class in any way by changing coaches , but he could add at least one,. Why no mention that to him as a possiblility if you get a chance.

You guys are a joke!!! Walton has been playing with half a deck of cards all season. Three healthy outside linebackers all learning each other's spot (Notice I didn't say a middle linebacker, he's injured Glenn Cook). The safeties all battered and bruised (Reddick, Ponder most of the season, and and that other safety whose name I can't remember), and lets not talk about the D-line. A healthy defense would have kept the Canes in most of the games we played this year. walton did much better than anyone would have hoped for with the hand he was dealt. give me a break with all that "Walton is not good" crap!

hey shannon blows go find another team to root for. you are a typical hurricane fan. half the problem with this team is the negative fan base which you seem to be a leader of.

look at the roster where are the playmakers?
vince lombardi couldn't turn this crew around. its going to take time and good personnel decisions.

one more thing. manny did you really think in the middle of a press conference before the last game of the year shannon was going to say " ah yes we're going to have staff changes right after the bc game."

let these guys coach their players at least for a year.

ON SHALALA:

Listen to you ill-informed people ragging on Shalala....

Yes she did require an increase in academic standards for the atheltic programs....any good SChool Dean wants to do that.

BUT THE REALITY OF THE BUSINESS OF COLLEGE SPORTS AT UM IS THIS:

THE CANES FOOTBALL PROGRAM HAS AVERAGED(!) $100 Million/year in profits to the U. of Miami....

IT IS THE MOST PROFITABLE operation at ALL OF UM's revenue lines. MOst of the school's money comes from student tuition fees....second comes FOOTBALL....much less comes from donations and grants.

SHALALA and the UM administration has EVERY INCENTIVE to keep the football program successful because it is a HUGE money maker for the school....

IF SHALALA makes decision that financially hurts the school, she will not last....and she likely COULD'NT make those decisions-- remember there is a BOARD OF DIRECTORS above her who HIRED her to begin with....

THE BOARD makes the final decisions on MAJOR issues actually....just like any Corporation.

Chew on that for those who throw blame in every direction without FACTS....

Hank Goldberg reports ... Larry Coker to coach smu

Damn Navarro, you said you would post more after the press conference...

first you delay the Q&A twice last week and now this? Lucky for you the higher ups at the Herald dont use the Shannon approach...otherwise you would have been replaced by one of the copy editors from the sports desk (boop your time will come)...

you know, because you havent produced on the football blog this week...

just like the time daren daly replaced Francisco Z and missed a whole bunch of friggin cake-walk FG's...

now, would that be the right decision for this Q&A?

i know this isnt football, but cmon, if Z is in the game against NCS, maybe we pull that one out and we avoid this downward spiral we have been on?

maybe we only lose 2 of the last 4 instead of all 4...

just speculation, but thats all we have left these days...

i think i am going crazy from all this losing...

oh and btw i am not complaining about your work, you do an excellent job...

last year, ohio state football cleared $36M ... U not even close ... get your facts straight

(bizjournals.com) Lincoln Financial Group, which is considering selling off the media unit it acquired when it merged with Jefferson Pilot in 2006, has sold several properties in two separate transactions. A $583 million cash deal with Raycom Media includes the Lincoln-owned station in Charlotte as well as stations in Richmond and Charleston and Lincoln's sports syndication business (ACC football & basketball).

Hey 242, thanks for that insight. I completely retract what I said. Thanks to you, now I know that our defense as been hurt all year long. I mean it's not like we had any injuries last year. Hell, we can just overlook the fact that basic assignments are blown play-after-play, game-after-game, and that no half-time adjustments are made. We all know, it's because the defense (pretty much the same one that was on the field last year) is hurt. Gotcha. Tim Walton, you're the man!

ESPN opts for the meaningless U v. bc instead of the meaningful uva v. vatech ... irrelevant?

come saturday ... ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU will have televised 11 or 92% of our games ... TV GOLD

a budget head coach affords expensive assistants ...

242 Cane,

Thankyou for not being retarded like half the other people on here. Miami took a big hit this year when Dixon went down. The run defense has not been the same since. There is just a big lack of depth on the defense this year, unlike last year when most players stayed healthy. I think all the whiners here do nothing but look at the scoreboards and then open their useless traps.

What do you expect him to say, "Everybody's job is in jeopardy"?

Let them finish the season and once he does the evaluations then he will make a decision or the coaches will make one for him.

But, remember this is the coaches first time working together as well. So there was a learning-period. However, the team got worse as the season went on, so I would think there was a disconnect with the coaches. When the opposing players say "Canes looked lost." that statement is on the coaches. Not having the talent is one thing, being unprepared to execute the game plan is another.

Oh Pacific Cane:

Get your facts straight....
there is no way our football program brings in 100 million a year....100 MILLION, maybe one tenth that....even if we made 100 million, that still wouldn't compare to the amount of grants and donations we get (See momentum campaign - 1.25 bn of private donations in 7 years).....I love hearing those numbers because it shows we are a UNIVERSITY FIRST, and not a pro team....

oh btw, in your theory, every needs to shut up about dolphin stadium...is was a good, no GREAT, business move...

I think everyone just needs to chill out....we are rebuilding...yes, it sucks to lose....but I know it will get better....give them a chance before you crucify the staff...they are young...they are not going to be jimmie johnson or vince lombardi overnight....be patient, enjoy the nice new stadium, and be a REAL fan and show up to some basketball, baseball, soccer, volleyball games.....the U is bigger than the OB....

I agree with big John. Keep the faith! we will be back! give Randy some time and he will produce a winner! I got abused this year at work by my co-workers (Rutgers fans)! I just start rattling off Miami's history and they shut up really quick! my favorite response is what's coach Schiano's overall record? they become silent! I still wear my canes ties! I drive around New Jersey with my Canes helmet magnet, the "U" hitch cover and canes license plate. My point is Miami is a dynasty that will get through this down period with flying colors! It comes down to recruiting! Dolphin stadium will draw more recruits! It will be the new Orange Bowl with unbelievable upgrades! keep the faith! we will be back!

donald trump chimes in: "U should've hired mike leach"

cane coalition good idea but the um has the worse fan base in the country. if they were undefeated people would be whining they're not winning by enough points or they're giving up too many points. this program is saddled with nit pickers on every issue. its incredible.

TO SAM,

My number may be off by $10-20 million but those ARE the numbers...

You mentioned 1.25 Billion-- but that is not considered a "REVENUE" stream income for the school. Grants and Donations are in a seperate catergory. We are talking about programs for the U that MAKES money for the school...ie. Revenues.

The football program makes money on their TV contract and merchandising. During the 80s-90s, UM merchandising and TV revenues EASILY toppped $100million per year. And that was when they were winning.

So my point is that the U and Dean wants the CANES to return to winning because the FOOTBALL program supports the ENTIRE athletic department with those revenues (NONE of the other sports make any money of course, they only COST the school money).

The $100million numbers were WELL DISCUSSED when i was in school there-- Undergraduate, Medical School, and REsidency training.... that's 12 years i spent at UM...

....I KNOW the school...

My number may be off by $10-20 million but those ARE the numbers ... I KNOW the school

I'm not making excuses for Randy. Besides, I should be mad at him. At today's press conference he kept referring to me as Juan!

Manny... Maybe you missed my question...

1)Waz up with a new field goal kicker?

2)What info do you have on other new recruits???

3) Is there a listing or a way to find emails of recruits who are on the fence... like OLB... Arthur Brown?

Nice to see you back, Green.

Manny,

I think Shannon must be mixing you up with Grizzlies guard Juan Carlos Navarro. Were you two separated at birth?

ESPN took the U VS BC game instead of the VT UVA one because they want to show the Flutie Majic play all game long. They just can't get enough of it........

On the Walton Matter. It is not a case of the D being hurt... It is very clear that he can't make in game adjustments and that the players are very unprepared for gametime...
Hurt or not hurt players are playing the same position and making the same mistakes all game long... If they where hurt of had a lake of talent but with good coaching they would be in position NOT MAKING the play or getting blown... AND THAT is not the case....
Our D is like looking at movie re-runs all game long....
He showed that with the blitz on third down he got positive results so why in critical situations he lays bach and give the long third down....
Playcalling ,praparation and ingame adjustments not there...

Does Rivals and Scout.com honestly want us Canes fans to beleive that we're the only team with "soft verbals" or committed kids wanting to take trips? You mean as bad as N.D has been all season none of their kids are having second thoughts? BULLSH*T! It's just another typical conspiracy to further humiliate the Canes. Further more, is it me or is Urban Meyer and every other recruiter in the country is just sitting back waiting to see who UM offers and and that's who they go after? They're letting UM coaches do all the leg work then they go behind the UM's coaches backs like the rats that they are and start the hating brigade. BUT AS FAR AS THE WAVERING UM RECRUITS ARE CONCERNED, IF U WANT TO DECOMMITT FEEL FREE TO DO SO, ONLY DON'T GO RINGING SHANNON'S PHONE OFF THE HOOK ONCE U FINE YOURSELF BACKING UP LSU AND UF'S BEST LIKE MOST OF THE 07' 5 STAR RECRUITS THAT CHOOSE THESE SCHOOLS OVER THE U! THE PROBLEM WITH KIDS LIKE YOU IS THAT YOU WANNA BE INSTANT WINNERS BUT YOU DON'T WANNA HAVE TO WORK FOR IT, RATHER JUST SPEND YOUR CAREER RIDING SOMEONE ELSE' COATAILS. BE LEADERS, NOT FOLLOWERS, LIKE FUTCH AND THE MNW AND BOOKER.T KIDS!

YOURE A HORSEPORKER !!!
