« Sean Taylor RIP | Main | Shannon exclusive (Part I) UPDATED! »

Tuesday's Live Q&A

OK. I'll be here until around 9:30 answering questions. Reminders, I had a two-hour lunch with coach Randy Shannon today and talked about plenty. I'll be posting a Q&A up when I finish transcribing. I've also been covering UM hoops and the Sean Taylor tragedy. Feel free to hit me up on some questions relating to those topics.

manny,

what interesting things did randy tell you

Manny, any word on the rumored player dismissals?

is it true that 7 players got dismissed from the team?

Manny,

Read a rumor on a different site that RS dismissed several players from the team, including Kirby Freeman. Hasn't been confirmed, so its hard to accept. Any truth to it?

Sup Manny?
My heart is heavy for the Taylor family.

My? Is there truth to list of players posted at Canespace that have been released.
and we would love info about any memorial for Sean.

Hi Manny,

What thoughts did Randy have about Sean T's death?

I read that JONATHAN BALDWIN named his 3 favorites and the U is one of them, what are our chances?

what round do you think Kyle is going to get drafted in if you think he even gets drafted?

kudos to the Miami herald for their comprehensive coverage ... no stone unturned ... kicking the competition's ass!

Did RS mention anything about the NW coach coming on board in some capacity?

Hey Manny,
As die hard canes fans are u disgusted with the media in how there playing Sean Taylor's death? The comments with Lebartard washington post and Wilbons comments on ESPN? What should canes fans do call in? Write e-mail?

Q: Manny, what interesting things did randy tell you? Posted by: canesfan35 | November 27, 2007 at 08:39 PM

A: A ton. But for starters, he said he had a conversation with Kirby Freeman and he's sticking around. Shannon also finally took a shot at the previous coaching staff, saying offensive players were encouraged instead of being held accountable for mistakes.

I'll have a long Q&A over the next couple of days regarding our conversation.

Do you know anything new on Seans death do you think it was planned ?

Manny, are there any plans being made to have a public wake? I know it might be a stretch but he was so loved in the community.....

Q: Manny, any word on the rumored player dismissals? Posted by: generalcane | November 27, 2007 at 08:40 PM

A: Randy said some players will be leaving, but only under their wishes. He said veteran players have been told better talent is coming in and they may have to come to the realization they will be passed up by freshmen. Doug Wiggins is definitely gone. I just got off the phone with his high school coach. So, you can cross Doug off your list.

I'm also a firm believer Charlie Jones will leave and Khalil Jones is likely gone too.

hey manny navarro, was 26 packing heat?

A: Shannon told me no one has been dismissed from the team. They've simply been told what their roles will be next year. If they don't like it, they can hit the road and UM will help them find other schools. Freeman told the staff he's coming back.

Any new football commitments coming in the near future.

How close were RS and ST after he left for the skins?

Manny, is George Timmons still on the team if so, what is his role?

Q: Sup Manny? My heart is heavy for the Taylor family. My? Is there truth to list of players posted at Canespace that have been released and we would love info about any memorial for Sean. Posted by: OCALACANE | November 27, 2007 at 08:42 PM

A: Regarding Sean, I've been told the funeral is likely to be Monday. I'm not sure if there will be any memorials on campus at UM in the coming days -- I wasn't out there. But I'm sure we'll hear something soon if there is. Gulliver Prep is holding a ceremony tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.

Manny,

May have been discussed before - how is recruiting going with regard to the kicking game ? When the canes were good, we always had exceptional kickers.

Q: Hi Manny, what thoughts did Randy have about Sean T's death? Posted by: rubcatcane | November 27, 2007 at 08:43 PM

A: He couldn't talk about it since he was only having lunch with us from The Herald and wanted to be fair to other reporters. He did however release a statement from the school.

"I am devastated over the loss of Sean Taylor. When he was a student at the University of Miami, I got to know him as a person and as a football playert. He was passionate about everything he did and was a great friend to his temamates. My thoughts are with his family."

Q: I read that JONATHAN BALDWIN named his 3 favorites and the U is one of them, what are our chances? Posted by: Dre | November 27, 2007 at 08:43 PM

A: It's pretty good if the Canes are in the top three. Shannon kept emphasizing today how important it is for Miami to get playmakers. I'm sure its going to be an easy sell for a kid this caliber considering the competition UM is up against to get him. Florida doesn't need receivers. They're loaded. Miami is dying for them.

manny, wut major recruits that are not committed now, do u think will sign on signing day

Q: What round do you think Kyle is going to get drafted in if you think he even gets drafted? Posted by: canesfan35 | November 27, 2007 at 08:44 PM

A: I think someone might take a shot on him late. But I see it more like a Brock Berlin situation, where he goes undrafted but still finds a roster spot.

Q: Kudos to the Miami herald for their comprehensive coverage ... no stone unturned ... kicking the competition's ass! Posted by: green | November 27, 2007 at 08:46 PM

A: Thanks Green. I hope people saw the difference in today's paper between us and you know who.

Q: Did RS mention anything about the NW coach coming on board in some capacity? Posted by: rubcatcane | November 27, 2007 at 08:47 PM

A: He didn't want to talk about any coaching changes and said once again he wasn't planning on making any unless someone left on their own accord. He wants stability. But I think there's a chance Roland Smith could end up on the staff in some capacity, ala Corey Bell.

Manny...tough times in Coral Gables and throughout the 305. Heavy hearts over the tragic loss of the former #26. Looking forward to your continued stories on this incident.

The only positive is the Canes BB team and it's recent improvement and wins. What are the chances they go through the easy part of their schedule 10-2 before making a serious run through the ACC this year?

Do you see Randy growing into the role of head coach? And how has he changed from the beginning of the year?

manny:
Did coach shannon mention that this situation could have an impact on the recruting trail ??
Thanks!!

Manny, great job this season. My condolences to you as someone who personally knew Sean since he was at Gulliver. Great coverage after the initial report that stupidly included his address and other superfluous info as well as a rap sheet.

What do you feel is a minimum standard of improvement in 2008, given that our schedule besides the roadie at Florida is a lot more manageable?

With the bball team, the ACC has performed well out of conference so far. Do you think they hit a brick wall come conference play? Do they match up well team with teams in conference?

A: Believe it or not, I haven't had much time to read many other stories out there. I've been wrapped up transcribing and interviewing people. But Randy did voice his concern today about why The Herald made it a point to connect this to UM. And I agreed with him.

While I understand Taylor is a Hurricane, he didn't get shot on campus. Unfortunately, I think everytime something happens regarding a Hurricane, the idea of ThugU comes out. And it really isn't fare. This was an act of violence that in my opinion had nothing to do with the Hurricanes except the fact the guy once wore The U. And its sad when spin city tries to connect dots that aren't there.

Manny, I didn't see any kind of plan of a memorial on campus today, either. I didn't go by the UC today, which is probably where a memorial would be announced. I'll ask around and see if others know of anything though.

Q: Do you know anything new on Seans death do you think it was planned? Posted by: canesfan35 | November 27, 2007 at 08:52 PM

A: I'm not involved with the reporting of the ongoing police investigation. But as I said last night, I don't think this was simply a robbery. You don't break into a house and leave a nife out of place and you don't take a shot at someone's groin if there isn't some vengence involved. You also don't cut the phone lines unless you want to make sure the people inside can't call for help.

Do you think this tragedy will affect UM in any way in recruiting?, because you know other schools will definitly be using this against the U.

I also think there will be more than 3 guys asked to leave this team in order to bring in the type of class that RS wants to bring in, which last I counted would be appx. 30-32 players.(your thoughts)

Did I just delete the k in knife? Yikes. My bad.

Manny your the best...Keep it up!

Any news on a field goal kicker??

Q: Manny, are there any plans being made to have a public wake? I know it might be a stretch but he was so loved in the community..... Posted by: RT6 | November 27, 2007 at 08:52 PM

A: I'm not sure. I'm know the family has been greatful for all of the outpouring of support. I'll try to find out about a public event.

Q: Hey manny navarro, was 26 packing heat? Posted by: green | November 27, 2007 at 08:54 PM

A: Not sure if he had some in the house. But it certainly wasn't in his bedroom. And that's a shame. He might have been able to protect himself.

Q: Any new football commitments coming in the near future. Posted by: canes#1 | November 27, 2007 at 08:57 PM

A: The earliest will likely come the weekend of Dec. 14-16 unless someone feels really good about an inhome visit. I would suspect recruits would want to visit the campus before making a final decision.

I agree with you but why would Susan write such an article today? I undersatnd the one with Barnes, because he was killed on campus but most of the other deaths were guys that had already graduated. It just hurts to see the Um image keeps getting tarnished, even locally.

Everyone here and at Canespace knows that the Miami Herald coverage beats the SS hands down and twice on Tuesday.

Manny, throughout this football season and via these LIVE chats, you have been a real friend to all of us Canes fans out there. We thank U for that!

Whats up Manny. I read Tommy Streeter is interested in the U but he wasn't sure the U was interested in him. Also, any updates on Patrick Johnson, Marcus Forston, or any other top recruits intrested in the U. Thanks keep up the good work.

Q: How close were RS and ST after he left for the skins? Posted by: Splarfy | November 27, 2007 at 09:00 PM
A: Not sure Splarfy. I couldn't get too into it with Randy because he didn't want to talk about Sean. But I imagine there was some relationship considering he lived in Miami and spent a lot of time visiting UM and Gulliver Prep.

Q: Manny, is George Timmons still on the team if so, what is his role? Posted by: generalcane | November 27, 2007 at 09:02 PM
A: Timmons is basically a graduate assistant without the title. He doesn't play and simply helps out.

Manny-keep up the good work. Thoughts are with Sean and his family. Any word on early enrollers?

Q: Manny, May have been discussed before - how is recruiting going with regard to the kicking game ? When the canes were good, we always had exceptional kickers. Posted by: keep the faith | November 27, 2007 at 09:04 PM

A: There’s a kid from Illinois who has been mentioned – I forget his name at the moment. Shannon said today he wants to bring in two kickers to compete for playing time next year.

Q: manny, wut major recruits that are not committed now, do u think will sign on signing day? Posted by: Canesfan21 | November 27, 2007 at 09:09 PM

A: I think cornerback Brandon Harris and receiver Tommy Streeter for sure will pick UM. I think the influence of their teammates and family will definitely bring them to Miami. Outside of that, I think Matt Patchan has a good shot of landing with the Canes. Arthur Brown could.

Jake Wieclaw

A: It might not be such an easy run anymore 86. The loss Adrian Thomas already began to affect them this past Saturday. They are short along the wings without him. Then, there is the injury to Jack McClinton. I know Haith said it will only keep him out 7 to 10 days. But UM struggled without their go-to man Saturday. I suspect it will cost them against somebody they should beat.
