« Sean Taylor RIP | Main | Shannon exclusive (Part I) UPDATED! »

Tuesday's Live Q&A

OK. I'll be here until around 9:30 answering questions. Reminders, I had a two-hour lunch with coach Randy Shannon today and talked about plenty. I'll be posting a Q&A up when I finish transcribing. I've also been covering UM hoops and the Sean Taylor tragedy. Feel free to hit me up on some questions relating to those topics.

Hey Manny i forgot to ask your opinion on the running backs. I think Shawnbrey is the best back we have because of his break away speed. I like coop but he got caught from behind alot and baby j seems to be running uninspired. Your thoughts for a penny.

Q: Do you see Randy growing into the role of head coach? And how has he changed from the beginning of the year? Posted by: Old Skool | November 27, 2007 at 09:14 PM

A: I’m not sure how much Coach Shannon has changed to be honest. He’s become more media saavy that’s for sure – even if his speaking hasn’t improved. I think Shannon realizes he’s no longer a coordinator and his ultimate job is to worry about the complete well being of the team. It takes time to get adjusted to change. And I think he realizes the importance of recruiting. Not that he didn’t know it before. But he’s put a much greater emphasis on it than the previous coaching staff did.

Manny, I appreciate all the great info. Can you update us on Jack McClinton's injury?

Q: Did coach shannon mention that this situation could have an impact on the recruting trail? Posted by: vlady | November 27, 2007 at 09:15 PM

A: He’s trying to counteract it. He was pretty upset that The Herald ran the article today listing all of the tragedies involving UM players. He pointed out several times how the only on-campus tragedy was Marlin Barnes’ murder. Unfortunately, its not just us at The Herald who have pointed it out. It’s a national thing. Everytime something happens involving a UM player, it almost becomes automatic for someone to come out and say – yeah, that’s ThugU. Miami has to beat that rap on its own and we in the media have to be more fair than we’ve been.

Q: Manny, great job this season. My condolences to you as someone who personally knew Sean since he was at Gulliver. Great coverage after the initial report that stupidly included his address and other superfluous info as well as a rap sheet? What do you feel is a minimum standard of improvement in 2008, given that our schedule besides the roadie at Florida is a lot more manageable? With the bball team, the ACC has performed well out of conference so far. Do you think they hit a brick wall come conference play? Do they match up well team with teams in conference? Posted by: JC | November 27, 2007 at 09:15 PM

A: JC. I was irate when I saw his address had been listed in the story and voiced my opinion right away. Not sure if it was my complaint or all of the readers that finally got it out of the copy. And I wasn’t happy either with the long list of stories regarding his previous arrests. It’s one thing to mention it. Its another to make it seem like he’s guilty because he was shot. So, I feel you.

As for the improvement, I think UM is going to have another tough season next year. They have three tough road games in a row – Florida, Texas A&M and South Florida – and still have to play in the ACC, which you know wasn’t easy this season. I’ll predict 8-4 right now. But it is subject to change.

As for the basketball team, I do think they will hit a wall at some point in the ACC and that’s going to come against teams with very good wing players. This loss of Adrian Thomas is going to hurt. I still think though, they can finish middle of the pack in the ACC and with a strong finish get into the tournament.

Thanks for the answers Manny. I know you are deluged with the job reqs....

Q: Do you think this tragedy will affect UM in any way in recruiting?, because you know other schools will definitly be using this against the U. I also think there will be more than 3 guys asked to leave this team in order to bring in the type of class that RS wants to bring in, which last I counted would be appx. 30-32 players.(your thoughts) Posted by: CANES25 | November 27, 2007 at 09:22 PM

A: I do think it will affect recruiting in a way – especially for those parents who do not have kids that live in South Florida. And I agree, more than 3 kids will end up transferring. Shannon will fill in all 85 scholarships, though, one way or another.

Q: Whats up Manny. I read Tommy Streeter is interested in the U but he wasn't sure the U was interested in him. Also, any updates on Patrick Johnson, Marcus Forston, or any other top recruits intrested in the U. Thanks keep up the good work. Posted by: DA U | November 27, 2007 at 09:29 PM

A: That's not true at all. I think the kid is just looking for more attention. I'll talk to to Tommy tomorrow. Forston is going to sign with Miami. Johnson is 50/50. I'll try to have something on recruiting in the next week.

Q: Manny-keep up the good work. Thoughts are with Sean and his family. Any word on early enrollers? Posted by: West Coast Ibis | November 27, 2007 at 09:29 PM
A: Marti will be one and I think that's a big reason Miami is taking him. Jacory Harris, Marcus Forston, Sean Spence are others. Matt Patchan and Patrick Johnson could also be.

A: Shannon said today that Javarris was injured all season and Cooper was injured for the final three games. I like McNeal. But I want to see him grow a little and add some muscle. He's real small looking.

Q: Manny, I appreciate all the great info. Can you update us on Jack McClinton's injury? Posted by: canes to the ship | November 27, 2007 at 09:42 PM

A: I didn't speak with coach Frank Haith today, but I know for sure McClinton will not play tomorrow night against Alabama State. And I don't think he will be back yet for St. John's.

OK guys. I'm signing off. Doug Wiggins is definitely transferring. I spoke to his coach and will have a story up soon.

Until next time.

Thanks for the info Manny.

Sean Taylor we will NEVER forget you...
