Courtside blog: UM 67, FIU 53 (F)

Checking in before tipoff where the Canes are about to take on FIU. I'll be here to bring you updates and thoughts throughout the game. Feel free to throw me some questions if you like.

FIRST HALF...
- Jack McClinton is back in the starting lineup for the Canes alongside Brian Asbury, James Dews, Jimmy Graham and Anthony King. The Canes are sporting those nice new black uniforms for this game.
- Talk about a way to start. Canes come out and score 12 straight behind back-to-back threes by McClinton and Dews, a pair of free throws by Graham, an Asbury jumper and a Graham lay-in off a beautiful pass from King. This could get real ugly.
- Alex Galindo finally gets FIU on the on the board with a three-point basket with 15:30 to go in the half.
- Edwin Rios left the game with 11:27 to play after appearing to injure his right leg. His right quadriceps appears to be wrapped up with idea. The Canes have been having trouble protecting the ball tonight. There have been six turnovers so far.
- Rios checks back in after a timeout with 6:46 left.
- Here's an impressive stat in this one. Second chance points: UM 13, FIU 0. Miami outrebounded FIU at the break 21-14. Dwayne Collins and James Dews go in with a team-high 8 points each. McClinton and Asbury each had 6 points each.

SECOND HALF...
- The Hurricanes start the second half with a 5-0 run. Have to say I've been impressed by the hsutle on the boards again for the Canes. FIU has some size. Yet, still, the Canes are beating them to many loose balls and boards.
- Miami now has its biggest lead of the game at 54-29. Collins has 12 points and seven boards and Dews has 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting. Miami has 28 points in the paint.
- Canes finished this one sloppy with lots of turnovers at the end. But we did get to see a reverse dunk from Lance Hurdle on an alley-oop at the end. It just didn't count.

Any Recruiting Updates?

None yet Brew. I was at the Booker T. Washington-Armwood football game last night and saw assistants Jeff Stoutland, Marquis Mosley and Joe Pannunzio on hand to watch Armwood's Matt Patchan and the three Booker T. kids -- Davon Johnson, Thearon Collier and Brandon Harris. Patchan looked great, getting a sack on defense. Unfortunately for him Armwood was too slow for the Tornadoes. Brandon Harris looked unbelievable yesterday. Miami has to get this kid.

hey manny navarro, how'd your blog do in november?

Same spot Green. No. 2 behind only Dave Barry's blog. Got the email a few weeks ago. But we keep getting better and better.

hits?

Hey Manny,

Last year Dwayne collins was a beast in the last couple of games last year, where we beat maryland and almost BC. Why isn't he starting. I have heard any on recruits for basketball, like that Boyntan from Miami

This were the numbers for November... I was second among Typepad blogs for The Herald. This list also includes Blogger, another blog format. That's the format Dolphins in Depth uses.

1. Dave Barry's Blog 699,966 hits
2. Dolphins In Depth 139,378 hits
3. Eye on the U 135,460 hits

A: Haith likes to bring Collins in off the bench because he feels Collins can get a better feel for the game before going in. Plus, King is considered the No. 1 post scoring option with Graham the rebounder, post defender. Collins ultimately sees starter minutes anyway. As for Kenny Boynton, he's one of the top 10 players in the country in his class. And the Canes would be doing backflips if they got hum.

Manny, any UM students or other assorted UM fans that went down to (Kendall? South Miami? Cutler Ridge? Technically where is FIU's campus. I know I've been there)? Probably not. It would have been good for the school to promote a strong crowd at FIU. What easier way to start a road following than FIU? I hope basketball catches on one day. UM fans are so weak, that it would take a national championship (like '83 for the footbal team) to get anyone to care about anything. Good team, sad situation. Maybe I'm wrong, is there any Orange & Green in their auditorium?

Could 14-0 actually be possible going into ACC play?

43-22

hey manny are we recruiting julio jones, the wr from alabama? i saw on an espn artricle yesterday that he was interested and i was wondering if that is true?

good to know Green, now we have got to fill that BankUnited Center when ACC play starts. We are still 12th by a wide margin in home attendance. I wish I could do more, I am up in CT, where Women's BBall gets more play here than the 'Canes down there. You know what it's like seeing Dana Tarasi do a car dealer's commercial??!

Canes fans are actually out here in force. The arena is pretty well stocked with fans -- not to capacity -- but I see a lot of orange and green.

A: Haven't spoken to Jones. But I'll ask about him when I get a chance.

In your opinion, what are the chances that we sign Matt Patchan and the linebacker from Kansas?

Q: Manny In your opinion, what are the chances that we sign Matt Patchan and the linebacker from Kansas? Posted by: Rebecca | December 08, 2007 at 08:34 PM

A: I think Miami has a better shot at Patchan than Arthur Brown. But the Canes have a good shot at both. Patchan's UM connection because of his father is going to help.

What is with all the rumors about Patrick Johnsons' admission into UM possibly being rejected?

What are the chance Jacory Harris, Sean Spence and Aldarious Johnson are accepted early?

Manny...congrats on the stats! Keep up the great work U do here at Eye On The U.

Whats Up Manny, I Have Heard A Couple of Rumors in which 1 Turned Out 2 Be True From A Reliable Source About Jacory Harris Thinking about Decomitting, But This One Is About Tim Brown #2 for Rutgers, former MNW Receiver is said to Be Looking to Transfer to Miami, do You Know Anything about this?

Many,

Anything new on Jacory or Patrick?

Way to go U B-Ball 8-0. Thank you for giving me something good to talk about other than the future.

Manny,

2 more questions.

1.) Did you see any of the Northwestern Deerfield game? I ask this because I know Deerifeld has some ballers on their squad and I wanted to know if the U was looking at any of them.

2.) Do you have anything on the upcoming Baseball season?

Give it up for Brock and Vinny this year! We're still Quarterback U!
(I just puked in my mouth.)

Let's get Dorsey to start a game this year. Can someone take a crowbar to Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn?

Hey Manny,

On UM attendance at tonight's game... a student road trip was organized by Category 5 and sponsored by one of the boosters -- over 150 students got free tickets and transportation to Pharmed Arena tonight, and they showed up in force, making a LOT of noise. Definitely had more Canes fans than FIU fans there, and it looked like the Canes students outnumbered the FIU students by a decent margin too. It was great to see, and that game was a LOT of fun!

I have to say, I was quite engrossed reading the message board attached to that article; I know every message board has stupid people, but man Miami is trying for a monopoly on them. If ever there was a fanbase that deserves having their program crash down, they are it -- duckinexile

Haha hey, I took that picture! I actually like the series and road trip over to FIU. It's good for the area, and it gets some attention from people who wouldn't normally be college basketball fans. If you saw the 150 or so UM students we brought over to Pharmed yesterday, they were all having a blast. This has never been a dirty rivalry with fights or anything in basketball, and it's good for both schools... I love it!
