Courtside blog: Winthrop 76, UM 70 (F)

Checking in courtside from the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise where the 19th-ranked Canes are set to take on Winthrop in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic.

I'll be here to provide my thoughts. So, will my homeboy George Richards over at his blog -- On Frozen Pond. George covers the Panthers for us. But he knows his Canes content better than most.

Enjoy the game. It's live on FSN and on WQAM. But if you want to vent or shake your pom-poms during the game, I invite you to do it here.

By the way, I just remembered my favorite George Richards (G-Man) moment of all time during the national anthem. 2004 Florida High School Athletic Association State Basketball Championships. National anthem ends and the PA announcer begins to talk about fans respecting the players. Its the same intro read all weekend long and by now G-Man knows it by heart. So, he shouts in his best Cartman voice: RESPECT MY AUTHORITY! The entire gym goes dead quiet and stares at two silly Herald reporters who are red-faced. That's G-Man.

FIRST HALF...
- It's 7-7 after the first break with 15:27 left in the half. Winthrop looks like its frustrating UM's offense a little bit. Eagles are putting some extra pressure on the ball and forcing UM to make tough passes. Most teams come out respecting UM's inside play a little more. It will be interesting to see if UM comes out of this time out trying to push it inside and take advantage of those Winthrop players double-teamming the point.
- The Canes are struggling in their transition defense. Winthrop is really pushing the ball up the floor and Miami is struggling to get back.
- Here's the story of the first half in a nutshell: UM, the balanced undefeated team, has 10 points from Anthony King and five from Jack McClinton. That's why the Cares are losing.
- And just like that, UM puts together a 14-2 run in less than five minutes to retake the lead.
- The Canes close out the half on a 10-2 run to go up five at the break.

SECOND HALF...
- Coach Frank Haith said this would be like an NCAA tournament game and so far he is right. Winthrop's 12-0 run has given the Eagles a 42-40 lead with 12:51 left to play. Miami has fallen asleep offensively again. The Canes had a 40-30 lead with 17:17 left and then got comfortable. UM is taking too many jumpers again.
- Jack McClinton has turned up his intensity. Unfortunately, his teammates aren't matching it at this point.
- It's 62-57 Wintrhop with 3:48 to play. Miami has been getting killed with the three-point shot and they aren't rebounding as well as they were in the first half. Great game though.

MAN-ny! How the hell did UF basketball manage to get it's games on the local CW station coming in January??? I'm po, and can't always make it down to UM for home games, would have been Great/Amazing to have UM basketball on a local, non cable run network...... Any thoughts?

I hate hockey and George Richards...

Manny Miami seems a little flat so far...

They are flat Montreal. I think Winthrop has more to do with it than the layoff.

Did we really get Julio Jones of Alabama? - The number one HS player. Please let me know. This would be HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Manny, How much playing time do you think Allen Bailey will get next year? How did he look at practice last season?

Have you heard anything new on the DC search
and on the FB recruiting front for the Canes?

We got Julio Jones???? Where did you here that? Miami isn't even on his list of schools.

A: No. I know I have an imposter posing under my name now. Just know I'll only post information like that in a story or on the blog. Not under this portion of the blog.

Miami is finally rolling!

Any updates U can give us on the DC position?

Manny any starters with injuries on our BB
team?

Manny, I don't know if you are taking football questions, but if you are, here is one: If signing day were tomorrow, who do you think would round out Miami's class?

Thanks

CBS4/ MY33 televise syndicated ACC hoops

Manny thanks for the score updates...WQAM
has some audio problems once in while on line...

King is having a good game!

A: Depends on where he plays. If he stays at middle linebacker, I could see him splitting time. If he moves to the defensive line, I could see him starting opposite Eric Moncur -- assuming Calais goes pro.

Manny, what was Coker's deal with not recruiting guys from florida (particularly south florida).....as I sit here and whatch these bowl games, plays are being made left and right from kids out of south florida.....even looking at the Carrol kid from St. Thomas....Coker did not even recruit that kid.....I know its water under the bridge, but I would just like your take on it....thanks for all your hard work...

Manny, how U been?

Manny, any truth to the rumor Mosley the receivers coach has been relieved of his duties??

A: I know the Sporting News reported USF defensive line coach Dan McClarney had been interviewed for the job. Not sure where they got that from. I personally don't have anything new on it. I've basically heard the same rumors you have in the last couple of weeks. When I get something concrete I'll let you know.

Q: Manny any starters with injuries on our BB team? Posted by: Montreal-Cane | December 29, 2007 at 04:49 PM

A: Jack McClinton is still playing with a soft cast on his left hand. But he's been playing with it for week. Jimmy Graham tweaked his ankle a couple of weeks ago and missed a couple games. But I'm told he's 100 percent now.

A: CB Brandon Harris, OL Ben Jones, DL Corey Liuget and either WR Tommy Streeter or OL Matt Patchan.

Manny with KF leaving we will have 4 baby QB'S some injured right now...Marve 2nd
surgery...Harris with a knee...is it true that Taylor Cook is also injured...Do we expect all of them to be fully recovered
soon?

Anyhing new on our future AD?

Q: would have been Great/Amazing to have UM basketball on a local, non cable run network...... Any thoughts? Posted by: no money | December 29, 2007 at 04:04 PM

A: It would. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to TV and broadcast rights. More up Barry Jackson's alley. Shoot him an email and ask. I'll ask on my end.

A: I brought this up more than three years ago when I was the high school writer. The Canes basically took their backyard for granted. They left the local guys on the backburner thinking they could get them late. It didn't happen. Shannon has operated the opposite way. Secure the local guys and then go outside. It's the right way to do business in South Florida.

Manny, has Bailey gain anyweight at all? If he has, does he have LBs weight or DL weight. Can he keep up with the running backs, and wide receivers?

Manny,
Any word on the Mosley rumors?? i.e. being let go...

Q: Manny, how U been? Posted by: RT6 | December 29, 2007 at 04:55 PM
A: Good RT6. Got all I wanted from Santa this year. 50-inch plasma for the living room. PS3. It was a good year.

Manny so far this season who is the best
surprise on our BB team?

Q: Manny, any truth to the rumor Mosley the receivers coach has been relieved of his duties?? Posted by: Jcanes | December 29, 2007 at 04:55 PM

A: It's speculation I've been hearing too for about a week. But I don't want to say anything about it until I corfirm something. Right now, it's just speculation.

A: Nothing new on the AD. As for the quarterback situation, Harris and Marve are both supposed to be healthy by the start of spring practice. Cook was reportedly injured, but nothing that would keep him out by the time he's at UM in the fall.

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to TV and broadcast rights.

I am ...

Manny, Thanks for the info and your hard work is appericated by Cane Fans.

Green.. go for it.

I answered his question

Miami has attempted 3 shots in their last 12 possessions. They are the fakest undefeated team. Turnover after turnover. This team is far from good.

Manny,

At home watching the UCF Bowl game (so far a yawner) but checking in on the Miami Bball game as well.
I posted this on the other day's blog but would it make any sense for Miami to make a greater push for TJ Bryant and stop wagging PJ's tail or is Miami afraid that they could potentially lose both by not pushing so hard for PJ?

Manny, what is the down low on Kenny Boynton? Is his interest rising in the Canes?

Sad to say, but Miami basketball is a fraud- they are sloppy on offense and can't pull down a board to save their lives. I guess its back to football recruiting. Oh well, miami basketball has always been a joke

We can't stop anyone, ugh

Manny i wish you and your familly the very best for 2008.

No need to support the basketball team. They can't rebound and the passing in the second half has been atrocious. Its hard to watch. Sooo sloppy. This team is going to stink it up in the ACC.

I can't say it enough. This team is not good and the shot selection is terrible. There is nothing to get excited about.

57-67 2m ... our D betrayed us
