Key UM recruit says he's considering Oregon

If there is one member of the next University of Miami football recruiting class considered a must-get, have-to-have, no question "we need this guy," most experts would agree it would be Northwestern quarterback Jacory Harris.

The 6-3, 172-pound signal-caller for the nation's No. 1 high school football team is one of six current Jacory_harris_actionBulls committed to the Canes. As captain and leader, he has tremendous pull with many of his teammates. Well, after taking a trip to Oregon with receiver Tommy Streeter last weekend, I caught up with Harris moments ago -- the first reporter to do so since they returned (CHECK OUT THE AUDIO) -- when I visited Northwestern's practice and spoke to Harris and several players. What did Jacory say? Something Canes fans DO NOT want to hear. Harris said he loved his trip to the Oregon so much, he is now strongly considering the Ducks. In fact, he's sent both Oregon and Miami applications for enrollment in January.

"The trip to Oregon was wonderful," Harris said. "They came out here yesterday and talked to me, [Coach Mike Bellotti] asked me about the trip and I just told him I enjoyed myself. Me and Streeter, went up there, had fun, seen the facilities and seen what they had to offer athletically and academically and you know, we really liked the program. And they will be a thought, something I'll be considering. I'm still committed to Miami, but I'll still be considering the University of Oregon too."

Harris told me he and Streeter, a receiver The U is also trying to chase down, were impressed by the facilities at Oregon and the atmosphere before the team's final game against Oregon State. Harris said he was impressed by the way the crowd responded to its hero, quarterback Dennis Dixon and said he was very impressed by the ovation Dixon was given.

"Soon as he came out, my ears started hurting," Harris said. "It was super loud. They really impressed me. I love the stadium. The stadium is built kind of weird, but it looks good. And I like that feel. The fans there are real supportive, its really a football town, that's all they have there. Oregon Ducks football and Oregon Ducks athletics."

Were there things he liked about Oregon more than UM?

"Yeah, there were a lot of things I liked better than UM. People are always going to say the facilities are better elsewhere than UM. But UM has the tradition of winning games with or without the facility. That's not going to determine where I am going to go. The fans are kind of better because of the fact that's all they have to cheer for. And the fans here if you do bad, they're going to get on you. You do bad there, they don't say too much."

Harris said among the many things he did on his visit was have dinner with Dixon, whom he said coaches were constantly comparing him to.

"He wasn't really trying to convince me to go there, but he was saying how I look very much like him from film. He said how his style of play is. He came in 6-3, 178. I'm coming in 6-3, 172. So, we basically have the same measurements. He runs a 4.48. I run a 4.52. We're kind of similar, both of us."

So, will this open things back up for Harris in recruiting?

"Yeah, I've been open. But it's just the fact I'm still committed to Miami. I don't know, that's still a place that strong in my heart, but Oregon has taken a big chunk of that away. Hopefully, I'll make the right decision."

Harris said he's going to sit down with his parents and talk things over soon. I spoke to Jacory's father, Northwestern defensive coordinator Rodney Harris, who told me "my son would first have to convince his mother to allow him to leave." Jacory said his mother mentioned that to Oregon coaches last night.

So what is UM doing to make sure it doesn't loose a huge commitment? Jacory said he spoke to coach Randy Shannon last night, whom Harris said asked him about his trip and encouraged him to "go on more visits and see other places."

"Your word is your word. And he's not worried about anything," Harris said. "I told him don't be worried about anything."

But should Hurricanes fans be worried, especially after Harris was walking around campus Thursday wearing an Oregon Ducks skully?

"I don't know," Harris said. "I've been messing with everybody today throwing up a University of Miami sign then curving it into an O. I have everybody scared. But those are just the little things I do to mess with everybody."

-- So is Harris going to end up going to Oregon? My money still says no, that he's going to stay put and go to Miami. But after hearing him speak Thursday, I definitely feel there's a chance Dixon and Oregon could sway him. Until now, I had always thought the Northwestern guys were locks.

-- As for the rest of the Bulls, I got a kick out of the way defensive tackle Marcus Forston, another key UM recruit, took to hearing Harris talk about Oregon. Forston refused to shake Harris' hand and told him, "Man, get away from me, you ain't no real Cane." Forston told me when LSU coaches attempted to visit him last week, "I pointed and told them to go home."

-- Forston told me other schools have calling him of late trying to trick him and other recruits by telling them coach Randy Shannon has only one year left on his contract. Forston and Harris both told me they've been receiving calls from UM coaches to stop the false information from spreading. I got a phone call from a UM assistant who pleaded with me and said "please put it out there that coach Shannon's contract runs through 2012. People are spreading garbage that he's only got one year left. That's bull."

-- As for Streeter, landing him at this point is not going to be easy. He said he hasn't spoken to UM coaches in a month. Although, I hear from the other end, it is because Streeter is not returning phone calls, a sign UM coaches have taken as a sign he isn't interested. When I spoke to Streeter for 10 minutes tonight, he seemed a bit brainwashed by the apparent pitches other schools are delivering. He brought up Sean Taylor, safety and how going away can be a good experience. Streeter, who has also visited Boston College, said he won't make a decision until February. But the likelihood of him ending up a Cane is tough at this point. UM coaches are going to have to work hard to convince him. Although, he also told me that the thought of winning a national championship in high school and then following his teammates to the same school is what entices him most about UM.

-- I'll have audio from all of my interviews up shortly, including an interview I did the other night with New Jersey linebacker Zach Kane, a 6-3, 215-pound senior who could become the 24th player to committ to the Hurricanes. Kane told me he plans to visit UM in January and will likely commit then.

-- I've been told UM is down to its final 10 scholarships and will attempt to more of an emphasis in the coming weeks on defensive backs. The Hurricanes are also trying very hard to sway current Illinois commitment Corey Liuget, a 6-3, 260-pound defensive end from Hialeah High. This is the early report. Check back later tonight and tomorrow for more on recruiting.

Sure he could follow Dixon's footsteps at Oregon, or he can create his own here. We need leaders at the U, not followers!!

Damn....He was the most solid of the solid....so I thought....

WOW canes fans we need to be loyal to our football players, I hated when i attend every home game i hear boos, this effect us, i told everyone that, show support canes

He's not going anywhere.

I hope Harris is a little more mature than he is showing now...He knows Miami is the
best place for him to play with his pals and win championships and to increase his chances to play in the NFL...Plus he can relate a lot with coach Shannon...He said many times that he was to enroll this January at the U...How serious is this kid?

Superb work Manny!!! Bravo.

Jacory's a Cane. The Ducks impressed him because they're so damm desperate for anything. lol. He should take other visits. Why not.

Forston is already a Super-Hero. Can't wait to see that attitude on the field.

Streeter's going to be interesting. Has Shannon visited him at home yet???

Let's hear this Kane. He sounds True U from what I've heard so far.

Great work and thanks again.

I LOVE FORTSON!!! HE POINTED AND TOLD THEM TO GO HOME LOL LOL LOL-LSU

I hope we get all the Northwestern guys we can get. I think Harris is playing mind games. Remember the grass always appears greener on the other side. Hearing Forston telling the LSU coaches to take a hike was great plus telling harris hes not a real cane was awesome. With the exception of Patrick Johnson and a couple of LB's i think all will stick with the "U". ITS ALL ABOUT THE U.

Forston seems to be the real leader and the most down to earth...a real Cane...

Our defense will look awesome within 2 years!

I really like Jacory, I thought he was awesome at NW. A true leader. We need that kind of leadership at the U. I hope he stays, but I wish him all the luck in the world if he does go to OU. Jacory is a player, I just hope it is for the U.

Jacory is a 17 year old kid having fun, so cane fans don't worry about him, he will enroll early to the U. As for Tommy this guy needs too much attention from schools to be wanted, our chances are low, and if we don't get him it wouldn't be a huge loss. Dam, U have got to love Marcus Fortson can’t wait to see this gut anchor our D-Line and Defense.

Cant say Oregon has a great reputation for Qb's doing anything in the NFL.

I'm a canes fan who lives in Oregon. They would be making a mistake going to Oregon. The Ducks are so inconsistant and Mike Bellotti over rated coach. The Ducks never have a National Championship defense. I'll give the Oregon fans the just due. They LOVE their team no matter what. Not like the majority of fair weather fans the Canes have. If they wind here in Oregon I'll route for them and wish them the best, but they win a NC here Oregon. The Ducks always find a way to blow it.

We have Robert Marve for 4 years. Enough said!

It doesn't bother me these kids say what they say and they think they will sacre the heck out of the coaches and fans. Everyone is replacable and no one is above the team. We have Marve, Cook and Smith here w/ QB's that I am sure will be available next year. I think he ends up here but we have plenty in the pantry if he doesn't.

And a note to anyone from the east who wants to come west (specifically Harris)...it sucks out here! I am from back east and if I could get out of here I would. The west is either cold (OR and WA) and has to many people and traffic (CA), not much there, far away from anything, takes a full day to come back east. It sucks out here!

I mean he has one bad game and what is he going to cry and leave the field we because he is being heckeled... MAN up... If you're having second thoughts just say it, but dont come out with some lame excuse about the fans are MEAN. Thats crap I hope Forston has something say about that.

LET'S BE HONEST>>>>>>

CANES FANS SUCK!!

AND I AM A CANES FAN....

BUT THE CRAP THAT FANS GIVE THE PLAYERS HERE, NO WONDER THESE KIDS THINK ABOUT GOING SOMEPLACE ELSE...

HARRIS IS RIGHT-- OREGON FANS SUPPORT THEIR TEAM NO MATTER HOW BAD IT IS....LIKE IN ALOT OF OTHER PROGRAMS....

EVEN UP THE STREET AT UF AND FSU...

CANES FANS HERE TREAT THEIR PLAYERS LIKE THEY ARE PROS WHO ARE ON A FREE-AGENT CONTRACT...

YOU NUMBSKULL FANS WHO CURSE AND PERSONALLY INSULT PLAYERS BETTER LISTEN TO WHAT HARRIS JUST SAID IN THE INTERVIEW...

IF YOU CRAP ON THE PLAYERS, DON'T COMPLAIN WHEN WE CAN'T GET COVETED RECRUITS TO JOIN US...

WITH THE 'IMAGE PROBLEM' MIAMI AND UM HAS NOW, WE NEED MORE THAN EVER TO CHANGE THE ATMOSPHERE FOR THE PROGRAM AND PLAYERS...

Forston refused to shake Harris' hand and told him, "Man, get away from me, you ain't no real Cane."

That's what I'm talking about

looks like someone is afraid of competition after all. forston however, born to be a cane.

FANS ARE THE "12TH MAN"

So we as Canes fans are honest about rating ourselves--- we suck worse than the 5-7 Canes football team is....

But everyone in college ball knows, having the crowd on your side is HUGE in motivating players (playing at home ALWAYS increases teams chances of winning)

When are we gonna figure this out???

Last post said something about telling a 17 year old kid to "Man up" and just take the verbal abuse???

Yeah right.... and if that guy was 17 and a major football prospect at a Canes game watching Kyle Wright's parents getting cursed and spit at by "Canes fans", he would chose to come to this school???? Hell no....

If you come on here criticizing and opinionating about how players need to be better, how about looking in the mirror at yourself and asking:

"How good i am my position as the 12th man?"

Pacific Cane let's really be honest... This is a metropolis not some small town that happens to have a campus as the nucleous of it. Thats just how big citys fans are not just here, and these kids are aware of this. We had plenty of players come through here and I dont remember any of them bitching about the fans thats BS.

I think it boils down to this! If Mr. Harris can enroll in January he will be a cane. If he is unable to and has to wait until the fall I think he goes elseware! If he misses the spring he is that much farther behind Marve!

To get the 4 and 5 star QB's like Jacory. We have got to switch to the spread. If we do we will get T. Streeter also. Jacory is a big get for the U. He is the player all the recruits want to play with. If we sign Jacory all the other recruits will follow.

Worrying about a crowd in college and them getting on U is what's expected at the next level. U win and everyone comes out if U loose U know the rest... Look at the Dolphins, Jets, ST Louis etc.. Their stadiums are empty because of losing. I am sorry but CANES do not go to mediocre games similiar to how the pros do it. Once we start winning the stands will fill up once again. We are not some HICK, REDNECK OR HILLBILLY TOWN THAT ONLY HAVE A FOOTBALL GAME TO GO TO. People MOCK MIAMI and say this and that but people will still bring their hypocrite A** down to the bottom. MIAMI WILL ALWAYS BE MIAMI..... SO stop hating. They love it when we down but their faces turn red when we are on top!

i must admit im real hurt by harris comments, as fortson said he is not a real cane. harris has been the 1 blowing the U horn all season now 1 trip 2 boring ass oregen now hes contemplating oregan!!! r u serious OREGON , WOW.

Pacific Cane are you serious? Florida State fans really supported Chris Rix. Florida fans loved Ron Zook. If that kid needs to be stroked like that obvisiously he isn't cut out of Miami. Hope he has a nice career in the CFL when he graduates.

I DONT WANT HIM, IVE FRIGGIN SAID IT ONCE AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, IF UR HAVING SEXOND THOUGHTS, DONT COME! WE DONT WANT U, U AINT THAT GOOD KID, WERE NOT GONNA WAIT ON UR ASS, WE GOT MARVE WHO WILL PROBABLY BEAT U OUT, THATS Y UR WAIVERING UR DECISION, VBECAUSE OF THE COMPEITITON! WELL U KNO WUT, THATS WUT DA U IS ALL ABOUT, COMPETITOON, WHOEVEER IS THE BEST PLAYER IS THE ONE WHO PLAYS, GO TO OREGON AND RTEAR UR ACL AND RUIN UR CAREER JUST LIKE DIXON UR FRIGGIN IDIOT

AS FOR FORSTON, I LOVE THAT GUY, TELLING THE LSU COACHES TO LEAVE IS FRIGGIN PRICELESS MAN, HES A REAL CANE!

Ok I am a huge Cane fan who lives in the Pacific NW just outside of Seattle. And these are the positives of the area:

1) Very Scenic and the Oregon coast for what its worth is beautiful. Anybody else seen Goonies- Cannon Beach?

2) Actual seasons though I find it hard to believe a black man from Miami would be interested in living in an area that is cold 9 months out of the year.

3) People are much nicer as a whole and less about ego. Miami is perhaps the biggest ego city in the country as seen by some of the classless fans who boo Wright and Freeman out of a game.

4) Eugene is an actual college town and I'm sure has the best athletic facilities and other non athletic amenities driven by Nike dollars.

5) Maybe important maybe not, if your a poor college student Oregon lacks a sales tax!

6) Pacific NW is home to a very large intelligent and cultural community. Maybe not as diverse as Miami but certainly just as cultured.

7) Maybe Harris doesn't want to have to compete for 4 years with Marve, Smith, and possibly Cook to start?

To ALL...

Everybody CHILL... sit down and have a Coke!

Jacory is my player along with about 23 other players, soooo far.

He hasn't said he is leaving but he did say he was thinking about it!
He also said that he was looking at USC next month and he is entitled to!

To those of us who likes Harris... He has not changed but some of you are changing, right in front of his eyes.

Stop the crap and let him decide his future without degrading him!

I think he knows that staying here would promote his chances of NFL stardom more than any other school in the country.... where else can you go and resurrect a super dynasty again! Given the class that is coming in and add that to the players that are here plus Randy’s next crop of recruits in 2009 ... you can book the date for 2010 and 2011 National Champions!

Ugly

who really wants to follow a great player? i mean, wright came to UM to follow Dorsey and he was a bust. michael vick's younger bro was supposed to follow in his footsteps, but we all know what happened to marucs: bust! harris was probably impressed by the 40 degree weather with non-stop rain! gimme a break! if he decommits and goes to be a duck, it could be a sign of what's to come for the entire recruiting class this year. players are going to say what they normally say about the U and that is that the facilities are absolutely terrible. it also doesn't help that the team is going to be playing 15 miles from the school now. i'm just really looking forward to USC falling of it's horse and then moving to the rose bowl. their fall is going to be identical to the U's.

as for streeter, he sounds like either a really quiet guy or a complete dirtbag. if he's the ladder, who wants him anyway?

HEY JACORY DID YOU KNOW OREGON IS PUTTING ON THE FULL COURT PRESS FOR TYRELL PRYOR AND TELLING HIM THE SAME: "You could be the next Dennis Dixon." too? Pryor has supposedly added them to his finalists after a visit from beloti to his school.

You are their plan B. Come to Miami and be the "First Jacory Harris", not Oregon and the "next Dennis Dixon" cause they are telling a few qbs that right now.

On one hand it shows you how bad UM's facilities are when after Millions in upgrades they are still considered ghetto. After hearing what the Streeter kid said about the Taylor incident & safety etc. yeah it sounds like he's a no show, but as Fortson said & I guess something that got Larry Coker in trouble a few years ago, your either a Hurricane or your not.
Now on the other hand UM has several good WR's currently on the roster, we played alot of freshman/sophmores this season, though they didn't play well it was just their first year out. UM also have several other top WR's still looking at us, the good thing UM has going for us is playing time almost guarnteed to Freshman/Sophmores.

IF he chooses not to come to UM will we have lost anything, NO! Fact is there have been several QB's who put up way better numbers than this kid, they each choose to go other directions, one to Penn State & is at the bottom of the depth chart, the other was last at a Junior College & got kicked off the team for conduct, then the last who decided to play Pro Baseball well he wont be seen in the majors anytime soon. So see when you loose players it sometimes means your better off.

Lets recall most if not all of these guys committed to UM when Miami was 4-2 or 5-2, then UM went on that losing streak, which will make anyone waver. So how honest were their committments? It appears they may have chose UM because it appeared Shannon had turned things around very quickly, well news flash it takes time, in the NFL where they can sign players at will it takes upwards of 4-5yrs to get it right, so expect no more out of Shannon who only has Miami's tradition to sell.

BUT THE CRAP THAT FANS GIVE THE PLAYERS HERE, NO WONDER THESE KIDS THINK ABOUT GOING SOMEPLACE ELSE...

U are correct sir! Enjoy your trips Jacory and have as much FUN as U can. See the USA and then we will see U in January when you enroll at the U. ;-)

GO CANES!!!

if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen -- harry s. truman

tough crowd? you bet. if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere : )

Hey, Jacory.....you said it all in your response about Oregon...All they have is football.....Come on man, we all know there's not another town out there that has what Miami has....and most of all, your friends and family are here not in Oregon. I can think of a lot of things I would like to cuddle up to in the middle of an Oregon winter and a DUCK isn't first on my list..
CANES FOREVER!!!!

I DONT WANT HIM, IVE FRIGGIN SAID IT ONCE AND I'LL SAY IT AGAIN, IF UR HAVING SEXOND THOUGHTS, DONT COME! WE DONT WANT U

speak for yourself, 21. hey Jacory Harris, we want you!

It wouldn't bother me a bit if Jacory goes to Oregon or USC. I wish the best for him or any of the other recruits that want to jump ship. When Butch was leading the CANES, he didn't have 4 or 5 star recruits (that touted the "U" as having the #1 recruiting class on ESPN). He had kids that would pour their hearts out and die trying to complete the play. Hell, it takes a special player to become a CANE. So if any recruit decides to leave, it's understood. We will be back and it won't be that 4 or 5 star recruit that brings us back to a NC. It takes a team. A team of CANES!! Real CANES that sweat Orange and Green. Whether they come from neighborhoods of Miami or from any other part of the US. A true CANE has been just that since birth. So I don't mind if players want to jump ship. Not everyone is made to be a CANE. Not everyone is meant to be a Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Edge, Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp and any of the other great U players. Yet at the end of the day, we will be back with the right players contending for a NC. We always have been and we always will!! P.S. Streeter. I can't believe you want to listen to outsiders, about the Sean Taylor incident. It's ridiculous what these guys will put in the mind of young recruits. I invite you to some of the past UM blogs and I want you (not U because you've go to earn it) to read what those glorious fans from other teams are saying about people from Miami(not U players). People from Miami, that's you too. So go ahead and leave, but just remember, when that fan reads the list of new players added to their roster and they see Miami, FL by your name, they'll think (thug & criminal). Why not stay at Miami, where RS has only had one incident under his helm. He will not steer you wrong and you will be prepped for stardom. Otherwise, I hope you like playing for those other teams with the label of THUG beside your name.

People are always going to say the facilities are better elsewhere than UM -- Jacory Harris

the soon-to-be-renamed dolphin stadium trumps all ... INCOMPARABLE

Look, what makes FSU a tough competitor in the football recruiting game? BOBBY BOWDEN IS A GREAT CLOSER! When its close to signing time, no one is better sealing the deal (and stealing away a good recruit or two from other schools).

RECRUITING is the name of the game. The unanswereed question at UM is whether RS is a CLOSER or NOT.

We're entering the the all-important FINAL QUARTER of the college football recruiting game. I hope the hell that Shannon's crew isn't sitting around the office at UM holding up four fingers (like our inept football team did this season in their last few blowout losses).

It's more than a little ominous that out-of-town coaches come into Shannon's 'hood and make inroads at stealing away his best recruits. (The way these coaches are always bad mouthing the Magic City, I bet they were packin' heat when they came down here to wow the local talent). If RS can't seal the deal with local players like JH and PJ (and God knows who else?), and if Miami is not going to recruit nationally like UF, USC, OSU, LSU, and dare I say OREGON (my God!) then, let's face it, BCS bowl games for UM are nothing more than a distant memory.

Time will tell, I guess. I am NOT jumping off Coach Shannon's bandwagon YET. If, however, HE AIN'T NO CLOSER, we ain't no closer to the BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

Sure, we'll have a GOOD recruiting class, even if we lose a few of our top recruits, but GOOD just isn't good enough!

I'm out!

Jacory...

Be aware that some blogger's on this site may not be Canes Fans... and you know what I'm going to say about tricking you, so if reading this, keep an open mind about Recruiting and how the system plays on your mind.

It's important to keep your objectives straight and don't loose focus... First State Titles, Then Nationals and then THE U.

Lastly, with all this hype and BS... Keep your head and don't get puffed-up. It takes you out of your game!

2 Things.

1. we should take the message that the kids are giving us as fans that maybe this act of verbally abusing the players when we don't like how they are progressing is getting old. The kids don't like it. THE KIDS DON"T LIKE IT!! THE KIDS DON'T LIKE!! If we are going to be a successful program then we have to accept that we are the proverbial 12th man and stop being selfish.

2. The facilities suck because the majority of these players are black. This school has won enough championships to get these kids state of the art facilities, instead they and Shannon is included, take advantage of the local loyalty of these kids by saving money and giving them bargain basement facilities and then pointing to the NFL. The U doesn't make these kids great, these kids make the U great! When Rutgers and Louisville started getting south Florida guys look what happened!! If the U doesn't man up, they will lose the loyalty of these kids Shannon or not. It is an insult to these kids that they can pay the price to win this city 5 championshoips and the Orange Bowl is the worst dump in the ACC.

What was the Canes recruiting class ranking for 1998 & 1999?

===========================================

Sorry Manny N,... I meant to Thank You for your tremendos effort and many hours that you are putting into this program.

The effort shows ... you are a Canes Fan and Thanks!!!
