Kirby Freeman leaving UM

We've wondered if he would return. Now, we know he won't. Kirby Freeman has asked the University of Miami for a release from scholarship, which means the Hurricanes will not have a veteran arm on its roster next season.

Freeman hasn't had the type of career he envisioned when he came to UM. His career numbers are ugly: 92 completions on 197 attempts, 1,311 yards, 12 touchdowns, 16 interceptions. But he'll always have that memorable game-winning drive against FSU.

I know freshman Robert Marve and Miami Northwestern High's Jacory Harris were expected to compete for the starting job anyway. But how do you feel about not having a veteran to turn to just in case?

I've been working this story for a few days and finally got the confirmation on it this afternoon. Susan Miller Degnan and Barry Jackson chipped in too. I'll have more thoughts for you later. But I figured I'd leave you a forum to pour your thoughts out.

As for Freeman, I'm hearing he could end up at Baylor, which isn't that far from his hometown of Brownwood, Texas. Freeman graduated from UM in May and has one year of eligibility remaining. But according to NCAA transfer rules, if he transfers to a Division I program he is supposed to sit out. The rule shifted for a short time last year to allow seniors who had already graduated to not have sit out the mandatory one year time frame. But the NCAA quickly went back to its old rules last January...

UPDATE... I spoke to the NCAA. Freeman would need a waiver to go to Baylor and be eligible. Getting a waiver is not easy.

Vince Lombardi is coming back from the dead to become Miami's next defensive coordinator--some people will believe anything.

Kirby, you will always be remembered as a guy who played with a lot of heart. Thanks for beating FSU at the Doak and for all of your efforts at the U. You will always be a part of the family--despite what a few trolls say. Good luck with all your future pursuits.

Blah blah blah, all the nice, cutesy sweet comments about Kirby. All the politically correct, lovey dovey nice things "like thans for the memories, xxxooo. Come on people, if it wasnt for Kirby, Kyle would have been the WORST QB in the history of the NCAA, based on high school hype and expectations. Here, what did he do? He threw horrible passes, horrible ints at he wrong time, was unable to lead us against NCststae, and looked ike a deer in the headlights all the time. At Baylor he is going to face the same speed rush agaginst Oklahoma and Texas and still look like a deer in the headlights. Whats going to change? The boy is not a college or NFL qb. Period and end of story. Everyone was previously down on Brock Berlin, but he got us to two 9-3 seasons, and he brought the team back on sevral occasions, not just once, and beat FSU and UF 5 times combined! KW and KF both ruined my college football seasons the last 3 years, almost single handedely ruined my beloved canes, who are starting to become the laughing stock kof the ACC and nation because of their ineptitude in offense. The same to the overhyped "receivers" like Leggett-get out and don't let the door hit you in the---!

What's going on with Patchan? last I heard was he wwas going to decide last weekend!

Good riddance to bad rubbish! I can't believe all these Kirby-haters turned Kirby-lovers since he's leaving. But did it once occur to any of U that he is only doing this in an attempt to hurt and get back at the team he claims to love so much since he was told that he most likely would be a back-up again? It looks like one of those "I'll show em, what they gonna do now" type of deals. No matter where he goes he will not be able to beat anyone out cause he is not major college material, so why not stay and fight for another position? He already has his degree so why not hang out with the U family? It's not like he's gonna play anywhere else! But fear not fellow Canesters, for it is the begining of a new era! Cause even at their worst the new qb's will be better than Freeman and Wright at their best! So i'd like to wish Wright and Freeman the best of luck with their degrees cause their playing days are over!

ITS OFFICAL PATCHAN WILL ANNOUNCE JAN 6. TO SEE THE FULL STORY GO TO ESPN COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUITING.

Kirby, thanks for the effort and the drive to beat FSU. Good luck where ever you end up.

He will be missed. He was a class act, and being classy while losing takes character...and Kirby had it. The pass to beat FSU while getting his ribs cracked was the '07 highlight. This guy gave it his all. I thank him for it.

Kirby...thanks for playing with heart and giving 100% all the time.

And most of all, thanks for beating FSU at the Doak! I was there to see your moment of glory. It will not be forgotten.

Good luck to you wherever U may go.

Don't let the door hit ya.... It's MARVE time baby... at least now we don't have to worry about Randy seeing what he thought was a good QB in the spring again... Worst case scenario for me and this team is if Freeman was selected to start next year because the others were too "inexperienced"... Nice clean slate with a kid who is a PLAYMAKER...
GO CANES

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All you f*cking losers should be shot. Kirby Freeman tried and whatever he's not that good but he was still a Hurricane, so wish him well and shut the F* up. You are all the same fans that were praising Calais Campbell last year and saying that he sucked this year. You're the first ones to pat a guy on his back when he does something good but also the first ones to kick him when he's down. I wish they would ban all you losers from Joe Robbie next year. Oh wait, you probably won't even show up there until they start winning. This is why all you loser South Florida fans are known as the WORST fans in all of sports.

Good luck, Kirby. Go Canes.

QB's that don't get any time in the pocket will always look bad, sure Kirby looked bad but Coker left the pot empty for not just him...I wish Kirby the best and thank Randy Shannon for taking on the rebuilding process which seems to be going well...I can't blame any seniors for wanting to leave but the future looks bright, especially with the major talent from the national champions of high school coming to the rescue. Any young recruit coming in will get lots of playing time and the opportunity to restore the U to greatness. Kirby may be doing the U(or should I say his U) a favor by giving Randy one more scholarship to use, isn't that what the U is about? Giving it all for the TEAM. The current problems at the U were not because of Kirby or Kyle...it was Coker and his incredibly poor judgment and development of talent. It is college and players move on, its great that Kirby moves on with the added value of a degree from a highly rated university. Who would you hire, a graduate from the University of Miami or from fsu (where they have to cheat to pass simple classes). Kirby has been and always will be a Miami Hurricane and I know he will be rooting for his ex-teammates and the new ones coming in because IT'S GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE!

Robert, since you love the loser so much why don't you follow him to Baylor! Even the most die-hard Cane-haters will admit that Kyle Wrong & Kill-a-drive Kirby is mostly responsible for the downfall of this storied program. U know these guys suck when they have Canes fans missing and praising Brock Berlin! What's even more sad is the fact the guy has been at the U for over 4 years and all he will be remembered for is one friggin pass against FSU! Has anyone thanked D.Epps for making the catch? Or better yet, has anyone thanked C.Mcarthy for the game-saving fumble recovery to seal the victory against FSU? Thought not! I understand some of U not wanting to bash the guy, but by no means don't try and defend the bum!

Here is what I would like to see to start the new year.

1. A committment from Matt Patchan
2. A committment fron Patrick Johnson
3. A committment from Brandon Harris
4. I'd like to see a strong push for Jamie Harper, RB out of Jacksonville. I think the cupboard is a little thin at running back.
5. I'd like to see a stronger emphasis put on landing 4 and 5 star offensive linemen.
6. The tight end position seems to have been ignored. Could we possibly be going to a spread offense utilizing the skills of both Marve, Jacory Harris and the plethora of talent at the wide receiver positions ?
7. Will there be anymore surprises a la' C.J. Holton coming in under the radar come signing day ?

Right on the money Dan. If anyone doubts that Coker left the cupboard pretty bare, just look at what Rich Olsen has done at Arizona State after struggling big-time with the talent here. I blame Coker's bringing in Brock Berlin as a short-term fix, leading to a lack of development of KW and KF that, along with too many other poor personnel choices or poor development, killed us the last 2 years. Randy Shannon is on the right track and will bring the U back faster than many people think. Good Luck Kirby. GO "CANES!!!

Does thid mean we have another scholarship available?

Baylor it is...

His father used to be an assistant under new Baylor HC Art Briles (formerly at U. of Houston).

Bashing Freeman is wrong. Kid had about 4 offensive cord. No one to mentor our Qbs and polish them. What you saw on the field was due to the bad coaching we had too. These kids should of been better but were lost like this team has been lost. You cant go into battle with a sling shot while your enemies have state of the art weapons. Freeman is and wil always be a cane.

Do you know how to read? I never said he was good...I explicitly said that he was not good. The guy is still a Cane and he tried his best and it didn't work out. And if you knew anything about sports, you would know that the problems on this team a far more than just the quarterback.

I hae had the privelage of watching kirby play since his freshman year in high school. The kid is talented! I'm not sticking up for him for leaving because i now live in brownwood. You see eople around here treat football differently than you people in south florida. We respect the effort and hard work these kids put in day in and day out. Kirby is just following in the footsteps of his older brother colby who couldn''t hack it at texas a&m and transferred after one season to D2 abilene christian. Maybe its in their blood to bail i don't know, but all i do know is if he plays at baylor this year our season at brownwood is shot. we lost this year because his dad would call plays to end the game instead of winning them so he could catch a plane and watch kirby sit the bench.

"he'll always have that memorable game-winning drive against FSU" - yeah right!!

1 of 14 with 3 picks against NC State is much more memorable for canes fans.

Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out Kirby.

I'm glad that most of us have handled themselves properly and given Kirby his due respect. Regardless of his performance (remember, he was here during a time of great turmoil) he is as much a Cane as any of us, even more than some. Thanks for your efforts and "in bocca al lupo," Kirby.

GO CANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He wouldn't even win the starting job at Baylor... better go play with his brother at Abilene Chrisitian Community College or Sisters of the Poor High School... No business anywhere in D1... Good riddance Kirby... Good luck to U... hopefully you majored in somthing you can use. You will be getting a job as soon as you lose the QB competition at Baylor...

P.S. Robert.... cry for me...

Cry for what?

You just showed how much of a classless piece of sh*t you are. You are what give true Hurricane fans a bad name. Loser.

Cane-ster Nip

Reading all of your posts shows what a moron you are. You are a pathetic little man who feels powerful sitting behind a keyboard. When people talk about how S. Florida has the worst fans in the nation, You are EXACTLY who they are talking about! PATHETIC LITTLE, LITTLE, BOY and i do mean boy because know MAN would act the way you do. Piece of $hit! I just hope our recruits don't read your garbage!

good luck kirby.
all you badmouthing him please show some respect. hopefully the recruits reading your immature comments know your a vocal but insignificant tiny group within the legion!

IN MY OPINION PLAYING KIRBY FREEMAN WAS LIKE HAVEING AN INEXPERIENCED QB.

SAM BRADFORD FOR OKLAHOMA WAS A FRESHMAN AND HE PLAYED BETTER THEN KIRBY DID.

KYLE WIRHGT AND KIRBY FREEMAN BOTH LOOKS LIKED HIGH SCHOOL FRESHMAN EVENTHOUGH THEY HAD A LOT OF EXPERIENCE.

YOU CAN BE A 12TH YEAR SENIOR BUT WHEN YOU SUCK YOU SUCK!!!!!

Good luck Kirby. Football just wasn't your thing. Hopefully you'll find it.

kirby should have been switched to wide receiver if coker could really evaluate talent that would have happened, he had some speed moves and hands but could not cope or throw as a qtback.

Just a thought for some of you
The 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 years have been a downward tail spin with revolving coaches, less then quality recruiting in 04/05/06, 3/4 star players not evolving to next step, play calling limited to player positions available on game day, key positions, as in QB's and Field Goal Kickers (9/16)proforming at about the same bad percentage. Interceptions and players not running proper routes. Special Teams and Zero Returns. WR and TE not stepping up to play. DB,DE and Safeties being burned every game and lastly, the Fans for lack of support at the games.

Who do we blame?... Lets start with coaching stability and pore recruiting during those years and work our way down the list. Meanwhile the top 10 schools of 07, during those same years... past us and now we are climbing back with renewed vengence, with a new team and a new dynasty in the making. Set your compass on the horizon of 2010.

Give Kirby and Kyle respect, as they leave, as they are Canes and were not the only ones to fail the U.

You say, "You are a Cane and you want a change"! Start by coming to the games and we'll see you there... jacked up and ready.

To the Canes

Cat Five

First and foremost, it's best for the kid to go. He wasn't going to play next year w/ "the Future" Marve, and "the future 2" Jacory coming in.

He was completely atrocious. He was worse than that.

Why the heck did they bring him in the first place? He's an option quarterback!

People are saying thanks to Kirby!?! Why!?! He was HORRIBLE!!!

I wish Kirby the best. You can't blame him for transferring, considering it was clear he would not be the QB next season. He is a college kid who wants to play. He obviously is not going to play professionally so his senior season is his last chance to play the game. How can you begrudge him that, especially when he'd be sitting in favor on freshman. Give the kid a break.

As for his performance, it speaks for itself. What boggles my mind, is how this staff actually thought Freeman deserved to start over Wright. That really shows poor judgment and makes me question if this staff is able to properly evaluate talent.

Like Wright, Kirby was hurt by the constant change on offense and the lack of playmakers that we have been spoiled by in the past. Watching the Texas/ASU game last night, I found myself laughing at ASU's inability to block simple blitzes. Sound familiar? Rich Olson couldn't adjust to blitzes when he was here and, obviously, he hasn't changed anything at ASU. Pathetic. Now, imagine being coached by Olson and Werner for 3 years. No wonder our Offense has been awful and both Kyle and Kirby regressed.

Joe Kane, you are just another idiot! Why say thanks to Kirby? Because he came in EVERY DAY and played his heart out, he came out to practice EVERY DAY and played his heart out. he held summer practices with his Receivers on their own time. He endured Fans like YOU spewing hate twords him every chance you get. Joe Kane, These are just a few of the reasons people are saying thanks to Kirby. It is pretty easy to take shots at someone when they are down. A real man goes out of his way to help that man back up. You sir, are just a boy. Do you feel a little bit bigger for ripping him?

Canes, U need to check your spelling before YOU call anyone else a moron! You said I have to be a pathetic little boy cause "KNOW MAN would act the way I do". And you call me a moron and pathetic little boy! U gotta be from the same trailer park as Sir Suge White, my favorite intelligent dummy!

Kirby was just a college kid trying to do the best he could....you guys should get over it already. He had a lot of leadership and always tried the best he could. Thats really all you can ask.

==============================================
You can't bash Kirby, because at least he had HEART and went out and TRIED his hardest - which can't be said for many of the 2007 'Canes.

Yeah, he sucked. No doubt about it. The reason, I don't know. Bottom line, he was BAD.

But I give the kid respect for sticking with it, playing with heart and giving it his all. I will never forget the FSU game.

But I'll never forget the N.C. State game either, which is why I'm GLAD he's moving on.

Good luck to Kirby in whatever he does, because he was a standup kid, even if he was a pretty horrible quarterback.

IT'S GREAT TO BE A MIAMI HURRICANE!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Good morning JoeK.

IMO, The team failed as a unit. Kyle and Kirby both played bad at times and yes, ineffective playing and bad decisions and interceptions all played a part at QB and so did the receivers in dropped balls, OL blocking, and offensive play calling, Penalties inside the RED Zone, Special Teams and starting field position was one of the worst in our history... It's hard to win games when opponents are starting on the 50 yard line and lastly the kicker, How many missed field goals during close games?
I'm sure you would feel alot better with a 8/4 record, as I would, but the team, as a whole, couldn't walk the walk.

Cat Five Cane

"But how do you feel about not having a veteran to turn to just in case?"

Do you think Harris, Mavre, or Cannon would do worse thant 1-14 with 3 picks against NC State?? Having Freeman as a backup is hardly reassuring...

Its interesting reading the posts of those of you that are defending Kirby Freeman, and attacking those who are critisizing him. The last time I checked Kirby Freeman was a scholarship football player who chose to play quarterback at a very well known college institution. No one forced Kirby to be in the public eye, and just like any other celeberity, politician or sports figure, when your in the public eye your going to be sujected to praise and to criticism. I'm sure Kirby Freeman is a nice guy, I'm sure he likes kids, walks older ladies across the street, maybe he'll win man of the year someday in the community he chooses to live in, but speaking about him as a football player at the U, he was absolutly terrible. I don't think any true cane fan thinks he didn't give 100% on game days or in practice, but somehow those efforts didn't translate into soild performances. To be brutally honest he had to be one of the worst starting QBs to ever play at the U. And so I ask my fellow blogsters that are defending and praising him..why? This is a MIAMI HURRICANE
FOOTBALL blog, we don't accept mediocrity at our beloved U..

and yes my spelling sucks..I am aware of these things

You hit the nail on the head, LAcane! Some of these blogsters just like to stir the pot and argue, where as most of these bloggers aren't Canes fans at all. The same people that dogged Brock Berlin simply adore him now that he's gone. The same people that called for Coker's head were the first to defend him after he was fired. Now these pretenders are pretending to love Kirby since he's bout to dip. Only anti-canes would defend Kirby and Kyle, either that or they are just plain idiots! Sometimes I think most of these bloggers are talking out of their ass, cause their mouths know better!

Umm... reading comprehension is really tough for alot of you people isn't it? No one is saying that he is good or defending his performance on the football field. Everyone thinks he sucks and everyone is glad that he is not starting. People are defending him as a person and as a Hurricane, which is what he always will be. He tried his best and did what was best for the team and that is all that you can ask for. But these losers are kicking him on his way out. Why would you do that to a Hurricane? Just say good luck to him and respect him as a former Hurricane player...good or not.

Canester-nip, surely you have the intelligence to come at me with something better than a spelling mistake can't you??? Maybe you want to defend yourself on why you feel it necessary to rip into a college athlete for not playing to your desired standards? Perhaps you now look back at your remarks and realize that my previous statement was correct. In case you forgot that statement, I will refresh your memory. You my friend, are a moron. Any spelling mistakes you would like to fix in this post. Be my guest, I don't give a crap!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

Again I say.

"Give Kirby and Kyle respect, as they leave, as they are brother Canes and wish them well in their journey of life."

To those who curse our brothers, I question your loyalty as a Cane, as you are acting like a TV Fan who has lost his 5 Dollar bet.

A true Cane would show support when times are tough.

Yo, I gave the kid his props, for the hard work he probably did and his throws against FSU. That's it. Some of you make it seems like he's the devil and put on a Cane helmet or something. Yes, he wasn't a Ken Dorsey, but he did help break a streak against FSU, which I think Kyle probably wouldn't have done. Hell, I'm still bent at Vinnie against Penn State, but people, let it go! Take the high road, wish him well, and get on with it. He tried and it didn't work out. I don't put the total blame on him and Kyle for this years debacle. Don't forget, we had a defense that was like swiss cheese at time, but could look like a "Canes Of OLD" defense at other times. We now have to look at quaterbacks that haven't started a college game yet, but with Miami's history, that's actually not a bad thing. As long as we get a good offensive line in front of them, and a good receiveing corps, we already have very good backs, I feel we should be strong on offense. Patrick Nix has to learn how to call a better game, because some of the play calling from last year was horrible. He's gone (Kirby), the next important event to look for is February's Signing Day, that's when we know who's really coming, not this soft and verbal commit crap. We'll know who's for real. Instead of bashing a has been Cane, let petition the school to make a choice for an AD, and try and get a game in Orlando against Notre Dame, because they have an arraingement with the Florida Citrus Bowl to play in Orlando after renovations are completed. THAT CAN BE ONE HELL OF A GAME!

Again I say.

Well said, Cat Five Cane.

Seems like there is nothing in Miami but these fair-weathered, brain dead fans.

Why is everyone saying "god luck Kirby" or "thanks Kirby". Thanks for nothing you quiter. He got an Education from Miami and now that he sees he is not going to get to play he bails. He is not a true cane. I say good riddance. For all you people being nice to Kirby now, were the same ones that were thrashing him during the foorball year. Bring on the new blood.....THE REAL CANES.

I went to the U on scholarship, busted my ass in the library, and earned every dollar in the classroom. I prepared, I performed, and I succeeded. Kirby might have prepared but definitely did not perform and had mediocre success, at best. Had I shown up in the classroom the way he showed up on the field, I would have lost my scholarship.

It's "disloyal" to dis Kirby, but Kirby is still loyal because he's transferring? Doesn't make sense. He's got his degree, so why is he considered "transferring" unless he's still trying to play for another team? Sounds more like a quitter to me. He doesn't want to ride the pine or help out the younger guys coming in? Sounds pretty selfish to me. That being said, I understand his decision.

If that's what's best for you, take your ball and go home, Kirby. You've got a degree from the U like the rest of us in the alumni family, but please understand the bad taste in our mouths you're leaving by transferring rather than bowing out gracefully simply to grad school elsewhere. Sorry things were tough, best of luck in future endeavors.

DOES THIS MEAN THE U WILL HAVE ANOTHER SCHOLARSHIP TO OFFER ?

Why don't you complete your analogy?

If you performed in the classroom the way Kirby performed on the field, you would not get ripped and degraded by fans and on radio shows. And if there was a chance that by transferring to another school, you could have a better chance at succeeding, you would take it. And that is exactly what he is doing.
