Kirby Freeman leaving UM

We've wondered if he would return. Now, we know he won't. Kirby Freeman has asked the University of Miami for a release from scholarship, which means the Hurricanes will not have a veteran arm on its roster next season.

Freeman hasn't had the type of career he envisioned when he came to UM. His career numbers are ugly: 92 completions on 197 attempts, 1,311 yards, 12 touchdowns, 16 interceptions. But he'll always have that memorable game-winning drive against FSU.

I know freshman Robert Marve and Miami Northwestern High's Jacory Harris were expected to compete for the starting job anyway. But how do you feel about not having a veteran to turn to just in case?

I've been working this story for a few days and finally got the confirmation on it this afternoon. Susan Miller Degnan and Barry Jackson chipped in too. I'll have more thoughts for you later. But I figured I'd leave you a forum to pour your thoughts out.

As for Freeman, I'm hearing he could end up at Baylor, which isn't that far from his hometown of Brownwood, Texas. Freeman graduated from UM in May and has one year of eligibility remaining. But according to NCAA transfer rules, if he transfers to a Division I program he is supposed to sit out. The rule shifted for a short time last year to allow seniors who had already graduated to not have sit out the mandatory one year time frame. But the NCAA quickly went back to its old rules last January...

UPDATE... I spoke to the NCAA. Freeman would need a waiver to go to Baylor and be eligible. Getting a waiver is not easy.

Good luck Kirby, thanks for everything you did at the "U". As frustrated as I got at times watching you and Kyle, I do realize it's not completely your fault. Everything starts with coaching and unfortunately we were unable to make the adjustments we needed to be successful. Hold your head up high, you don't owe anyone here on this blog anything... Best of luck at Baylor or whereever you decide to go and hopefully you will enjoy your last year of eligibility and make the most of it. May God bless you in all aspects of life and everything you do after football...

Robert: You are a major D---k head!

Why do you rip on people who speak the truth about a shi-ty qb who was the worse I have ever seen at what he does? I mean this ain't FIU my friend. This is where NCS were born! KF and KW are the worse tandem qbs ina major D-1 school ever. ever ever ever! can't think of any worse= evenr worse than Kenny kelly and Frank Covington. Worse.

Kirby is dumber by iq points than Brock berlin. He can't read blitzes, can't decide whether or when to run, can't throw the deep ball well, that dead duck of a pass that he threw agaginst NC state that was intercepted was pathetic. He can't read coverages. He can't see receivers. He takes too many sacks (oh that Kyle wright). Sorry-when you see a true freshman in Sam bradford SCHOOOOOOOOL YOU, and you are a senior and junir respectively, You have a problem. That boy is ion the wrong sport or at least the wrong position, and who gives a crap about effort. He should have that U tatoo and turn it into an "O" because his qb play and qb smarts are one big fat zero just like you are.

Wow...I really don't have to reply to your post to point out how stupid you really are. Why don't you go to Miami-Dade, because I know that is the only school that would accept a retard like you, and take a class in reading comprehension. I have never said that Kirby Freeman was a good QB or defended him on the field. I think he's the worst QB in Miami history, you dumb f*ck. Please point out where I have said otherwise. It amazes me the complete idiots that there are out there.

By the way, it was Frank Costa and Scott Covington, you pathetic excuse for a Hurricane fan.

Some people are athletes, some people are academics, so it's all relative. Ask Kirby if he would give up his scholarship in exchange for not getting ripped by idiot fans and radio shows. I genuinely doubt it. Unfortunately, the public negativity comes with the territory, and it's the high risk/high reward culture he knowingly signed up for.

And I agree he's got a chance for success at another school, so good for him. But Shannon always said the best players will play. If Kirby wasn't a quitter, he'd go out and attempt to earn a spot on this team. Instead, he's taking the easier route by trying to step onto a squad where the competition won't be as fierce or where he can start with a clean slate rather than try to reconcile for seasons past. He's abandoning his team to take care of himself. Great for Kirby, but don't expect too many well-wishes from those he's leaving behind.

The only solace I can take is if he were giving up his scholarship so that another player could sign. But I doubt that was his reason, and I'm not sure of the technicalities, but we may lose that scholarship for next year (I don't know).

He did what he could but we expected more just like we did with kyle;now we have Mare to take over he seems like a kid that likes to win, Im not setting any expectaions im just going to watch and root for UM.

LMAO @ U PEOPLE KISSING HIS ASS NOW
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Well not having a veteran arm to count on and also mentor the young QBs would normally be an issue. Problem is Freeman has never really distinguished himself as a premier QB - neither has Kyle Wright. Both had considerable hype surrounding them and in my opinion will not even be playing bench on Sundays in the NFL. Even NFL Europe is a longshot for each of them.

Bring on young talent - though I realize that it might be another year before the U rises again.

Didn't the NFL terminate NFL Europe earlier this year?

Nemo,

Kyle will be on an NFL Roster next season. He still has the size, arm strength and adequate enough footwork to develop into a player.

Oh and to a previous post by who I can't remember: Scott Covington was a decent QB while with Miami and was a part of the team that upset UCLA and set the stage for Miami's reemergence into the elite.

KF maybe thinks he can earn a check in the pros. Brock started this year, yet he was always dissed on the blogs. I'm convinced that all the KF haters never graduated. If they did please note the year as I am, so we can know if you ever saw Ray Bellamy, Burgess, Chuck Foreman, Anderson,Kelly,Highsmith etc. play or Tate, Curci, Elliot, Selmer or Saban Coach. You probably never got through Miami Dade or are FIU wannebes, so you are pro fans rooting for a NCAA team. You Guys jumped the bandwagon in 84 with Howard, and now you think you can Hate on UM grads like this is the Dolphins. Even brother Brian has it wrong, KF is merely going to another grad school. This may not sit well, but I'm not a Cane Fan, I'm a Cane, always will be can't change it any more then ethnic makeup. You fans who hate on KF, Coker can always change alligence. I was there in 76 when the UM went to Bama and the Bear crushed us 47-0. I was there when we went to Norman this year and got crushed by Stoops. We will be OK. The U will rise again. leave the hating to the Fish, heat, marlins fans. They get paid to take it.

Boy, some of you cane fans are pretty cruel. Playing at the U must be like a zoo to put up with all the taunts. I'm surprised someone hasn't jumped the wall and mauled some of you idiots. Do you Like playing in a real conference where there's good competition every week?

Lucky you aren't in the SEC

funny that most of that competition in the "real conference" came from the big east

Chilidipper what a name it show what you are. You Gaytards don't have anything better to do. Remember " We own you". You avoided playing us for years because you didn't want to get your ass kick. Remember who has 5 national Championships. You're not on our level. Tell Urban the Hurricane MIAMI gonna blow through Gainesville next year. It's going to be a category 5, get ready to be blown away. Gaytards!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S ALL ABOUT DA U

C/0 2003

Just out of curiosity, Canesternip, Jaime, LAcane, did you graduate from the U?

Simply a question, I am not trying to insult anyone...

Kirby should be free to do what he chooses, maybe this will give him a leg-up on the next level. He doesn't owe us anything. Perhaps things would've been different if he had gotten that "chance" a long time ago, but it's in the past.

Robert you are a pathetic excuse for a human being and i'm coming over you p---sy a-- and i'm going to b---ch slap you from here to pasadena you moronic idiotic piece of human excrement. You sit there and insult evryone who disagrees with you despite being out numbered. You also corrected me on Kenny kelly you idiotic moron, as you lnow he played at um before dorsey. You stoopid excuse for a waste of sperm. Go to your momma and tell her your daddy want his giz back

Who cares if i graudated from the U. The U as a small school, has a fan base that goes way beyond alumni and students. It is Dade and Browards team, poor and rich, young and old, and we (alumni or not) have adopted the U football team as ours, because we either grew up there as I did, or went to school there. In fact, I have been supporting Um football since before many of you all knew how to wipe your own--sses, and I have never seen a pathetic excuse for a qb as KF or Kw. and note i have said nothing about them as persons. I ma sure Kirby will be a good high school assistant coach somewhere in Texas so they canmake a tv series about how his high school team went to thetexas championship, all the while he can put his UM degree to use and sell used cars.

Bottom line: agree or disagree Kirby sucked as a quarterback, and a team goes as the qb goes.

Oh and to a previous post by who I can't remember: Scott Covington was a decent QB while with Miami and was a part of the team that upset UCLA and set the stage for Miami's reemergence into the elite.

That was Kenny Kelly who upset UCLA in '98.

Yeah and in fact, no qb upset UCLA, it was all the O-line and The edge with his 299 yards rushing!

1st of all, I'm outnumbered on what exactly? You don't even know what you're point is, you @sshole. 2nd of all I haven't mentioned anything about Kenny Kelly or Ken Dorsey. What are you talking about? You don't even know the names of former Cane QBs and you call yourself a hurricane? 3rd of all, I dare you to bring your soft @ss here to Miami and meet me because I will kill you. You talk real big behind a computer in California. I f*king absolutely dare you to meet me.

That was Kenny Kelly who upset UCLA in '98.

Posted by: 242 Cane | December 28, 2007 at 08:36 PM

No it was not. It was Scott Covington.

Kenny Kelly Started the 98-99 season. and then quit to play baseball the 99-2000 season when Dorsey took over buddy!

Fan, student, alum or some blog troll just looking to instigate over the internet, I don't care. Kirby was an absolute gentleman while he was here, he didn't have the talent to get us as far as we would have liked, but he didn't punk out once and always played with a full heart. He never embarassed the program or the school, and he never spoke ill of his teammates, the university or the administration. If you are a REAL fan, you will wish him well as you would all Canes who left this program, whether of their own volition or not, on good terms and with respect.

Best of luck Kirby in all of your future endeavours.

oops. I stand corrected

jaime, you are right about never having such a horrible QB... no one is arguing against that.

But what does it matter if people wish him well? As an alum, I find myself hoping that Kirby moves on to bigger and better things because he will always be a Cane. I was born and raised in Miami and have bled Orange and Green my whole life. I hated Kirby as our QB, but that doesnt mean that, now that he is gone, I cant hope for the best for a fellow Cane.

Thats the only point I am trying to make...

Like it or not, Kirby will always be a CANE, and since the U prides itself on the "brotherhood" of its players/alums, I just dont understand why you have such a problem with people wishing him well.

PS: I love the hypocrites who come on here and rag on Kirby, but were calling for Coker's head while in tears when other guys decommitted or transferred out.

Kenny Kelly Started the 98-99 season. and then quit to play baseball the 99-2000 season when Dorsey took over buddy!

Why do you open your mouth without knowing anything?

Scott Covington threw for 318 yds and 3 tds that day. Look it up, buddy.

Unbelievable.

Mike P -

Jaime has a serious problem with reading comprehension. He doesn't even know what he is arguing. He is obviously a complete moron.

Hey homo Robert... I admitted my mistake. When will you admit that your dad made a mistake by not pulling out?

242 you from the bahamas?

Your reply came after I posted, @sshole. Are you all mad now because you it's obvious you don't know sh*t about Miami football?

Yeah. I'm fuming mad.... grrrr... what a loser

mike. yes I am

Yeah. I'm fuming mad.... grrrr... what a loser

Posted by: 242 Cane | December 28, 2007 at 09:11 PM

You insult me with your 2-yr old insult after posting your nonsense and I'm the loser? Go read up on some Hurricanes history, scrub.

Hey everybody... Robert called me a "scrub" I'm so sad, now. :-(

Lets see if I can piss him off some more by his responding to me calling him an absolute "joke"!!!

Kirby is a college kid...lay off this dude already! All you can ask of these kids is that they give the best effort possible. Kirby did that, end of story.

There are plenty of adults to blame for UM's lack of success. Randy Shannon is working on coaching and recruiting, we are getting a new AD, and upgrading facilities. We should focus on the progress in these areas instead of beating the Kirby thing into the ground.

How many people here could've completed that final pass in the FSU game. Not me.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.
To some on the board.

He is still a Cane, let him leave with respect and wish him well.

Point: Randy told him, he would not be playing for the team in 08 and it was Kirby's option to leave, to play out his last year somewhere else and it was Randy who helped him transfer to Baylor.

I don't think anybody would stay on the team under those conditions... would you? I know I would not!

TO Kirby and to a smooth transition, good luck!

Cat Five Cane

How about you all stop arguing with each other and show up to the 'Canes basketball game tomorrow?

Kirby's gone, he sucked, we've got new guys coming in, end of story.

If you're real Miami fans, you'll make an effort to come and support the only decent team in South Florida right now. And can somebody explain to me why the last game in the OB wasn't sold out?

Newsflash: Posting on a blog doesn't make you a real fan. SHOW UP, support our 'Canes. You're not allowed to have an opinion until you do.
-----
It's great to be a Miami Hurricane!

I admit I didn't go to the U. I admit I became a lifelong fan when at the age of 11 I watched them beat Nebraska in the OB, January 1, 1984. Despite the fact that I live on the left coast, I've managed to attend UM games all over the country through the years, I've seen wins and losses, national championship victories and streak ending losses (still the only time I've cried at a sporting event, when Wash snapped our winning streak) I feel lucky that I've been fortunate enough to manage to see the U in person quite a bit, despite the fact I don't live in So Fla, nor did I go to the school, but does it make me any less of a fan? Just because I didn't get my degree in Coral Gables does that mean I can't vent a little? I'm glad people are mentioning Scott Covington (don't forget about Ryan Clement) and Kelly Kelly on some recent posts. It reminds me of another dark time at the U, the probation years. I'm sure for the most part they were great decent human beings, but none of them panned out at QB. So yes for those of you bloggers out there who think that critiquing the play of Kirby Freeman is clasless, let me ask you this. What about him leaving with a year of eligibility left? What about him being the bigger man and sticking around to help with the youngsters coming in? All of you K Freeman defenders are singing his praises for getting his degree, but how about following through with your commitments? We arguably just went through the worst 2-3 year offensive period in the history of the program, certainly in the last 25 years. In caneland when you play well you get praised, when you don't you get panned..thats life in the U, but I also think thats what (at least used to) gives us the edge, what sets us apart from other schools.

Probably waaay too long of a post, my apologies.

Agree with Cane Mutiny. If y'all are fans, you'll watch the Canes whup on Winthrop tomorrow.

And my apologies to LAcane for the similar sounding name, but you're not the only Cane in LA. Figured there's room for one more representing the Left Coast.

To all the posters that don't attend UM or recieved a degree from UM, please shut up!!! You have to right to say anything about UM. I don't care if you are from Miami or Broward. UM isn't a public school. Therefore, if you are only a fan - go cheer for the Dolphins!!!

Shut the hell up, Cane Alum. Anybody has the right to be a Cane, provided they're not fairweather jackasses. Face it, Miami is a small private school, and without outside fans, attendance would be even lower than it already is.

Let me ask you, Cane Alum, will YOU be at the game tomorrow?

If that were the case, there would be about 5,000 fans at the games and that includes the students. Why don't you shut up and allow fans to be fans. UM is a private school whose fan base is primarily from the Miami-Dade and Broward communities. We can say what we want about the school and the program because we are entitled to. We, the South Florida community of non UM alumi represent more than 80% of the fan base at the games. You think we're bad??? You should go up to Tuscaloosa, or or that private university called Notre Dame! Us non-alumi are gonna be here and speak our mind whether you like it or not so you can go suck it!

?????? If you didn't graduate from the u shut up???????? Ah Jacka$$ I can can root for who i want and talk smack about who i want. I didn't go to cullanary school so should i stop cooking??? I am not a mechanic so should i not drive my car????? Come down of your mountain and get back on your fry station.

CaneAlum,

You can't be serious can you? If I understand you correctly, the only way to be a true fan is if you attended the U?
caneinLA, no worries, good to have a fellow cane in Pac-10 world, I'm sick of watching USC be what we used to be.

First off. I was just wondering... i never said anythingbad about non UM alums...

242, where in the bahamas are you from? I worked in the Berry Islands as a lobster diver (on the Me One) for a couple years and I love the bahamas with every inch of my heart, i go as often as possible...

Mad love for all Cane fans, regardless of where you went or didnt go to school...

Fans are fans, if you root for the canes then mad love, BUT...

For those of us who ARE alums, we hold a special bond with our school...WAY MORE than as a football fan, we love every aspect of our alma matter... no matter what, and Kirby IS and always will be a brother of ours...

Quick story... I am in Colorado right now visiting my Dad, and I wear my U Hoodie every where I go, and I get mad shout outs from both Football Fans AND Alums, only the alums come up to me, ask what year I graduated, we shoot the sh@t, and its all good and gravy... But there is a connection that FAR exceeds a football connection...

Like I said, anyone who reps the U or roots for the U is MY BOY 4 LIFE... regardless of a degree...

But KIRBY FREEEMAN will be my boy, regardless, and if I ever see him walking around, I will be sure to holler at him...

MAD LOVE FOR ALL CANES...

Mike
