The No Spin Zone

I'm not really a fan of FOX's Bill O'Reilly. But there is a segment/concept on his show -- The No Spin Zone -- I see befitting for the topic related to the Patrick Johnson saga.

On my way home from today's Virginia Tech practice -- yes I'm covering the Hokies who are in town for the Orange Bowl -- I called back some of my buddies at The U who had left me a few irate messages pertaining to the Rivals.com 5-star cornerback, who announced yesterday he was no longer considering The U (I know this will be it for the PJ stuff, I promise!).

As you know, college coaches and staff members are prohibited by the NCAA from commenting publicly about potential recruits. But it doesn't mean they can't tell us how they feel off the record. Let's just say The U is steaming over Johnson. No, nobody at The U was surprised Johnson, USA Today's Defensive Player of The Year, decided to officially cross UM off its list. They are just surprised at how he has tried to spin the story. Johnson told reporters Sunday that UM "wasn't showing him enough love."

According to UM sources, it was apparently Johnson who wasn't showing UM any love. In fact, the source said UM tried on several occassions in the past month to reach Johnson on his cell phone and usually never received phone calls back. One assistant who was handling his recruiting visited Johnson at Blanche Ely High. Officials supposedly called Johnson in his classroom to tell him to meet up with the UM official after school. Johnson agreed. But according to the source, Johnson never showed or explained why he blew the visitor off.

Hurricanes fans can at least thank Johnson for this: his announcement Sunday gives UM more than a month to fill his scholarship. Tallahassee Lincoln's T.J. Bryant and Booker T. Washington's Brandon Harris may not have the size and athleticism of Johnson. But UM sources say either are more than capable of being just as good as Johnson if not better. As for Johnson, the UM source said this: "Bet the house whenever we play him the first ball is going over his head for a touchdown."

Anyway, I figured that would light U guys up. I've got my Hokies story and notes to write.

** By the way, the Hurricanes dropped out of the Top 25 in men's hoops. Can't say I'm surprised. But I will say this, UM fans shouldn't be so down on this team. Not only is Winthrop a very good mid-major, this UM hoops team in my eyes is still very good and capable of making the NCAA tournament. Are they Top 25 material? Not yet. Did they play a favorable schedule to get to 12-0? Yeah. But I really believe the chemistry and makeup of this team is good enough to win at least 20 games and push for the tournament. Winthrop was a veteran team that knew how to beat UM. And it might be a blessing in disguise for UM. The Hurricanes needed a jolt before ACC play and this might have been what they needed.

** By the way, I saw new Dolphins head-man Bill Parcells at today's Hokies practice. I had never met the Tuna before, but the dude is intimidating. He's tall, about 6-3, 6-4 and he carries around a real-life intensity. You could feel it. He spoke to the Hokies players for about three minutes about what he was there for -- basically to check them out. He said "I'm looking for some football players. No dope heads or lazy guys. Football players." Got to say it was encouraging for the Dolphins to see their head-honcho already at work.

Besides Dennis Thurman, To see Ravens coaching staff, go to:

http://www.nfl.com/teams/coaches?coaType=assist&team=BAL

.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<.

What I see in Thurman is he has allot of practical experience like Randy and played for Dallas, like Randy, about the same age, has 7 years in college coaching at USC and 5 year Pro coaching and most importantly,... I think that he would be affordable.

IMO: his thinking... Coming to Miami, would propel his worth for HC after we take back the BCS in 2010 and 2011.... and he would become a house hold name throughout the College world as being the guy to bring Miami back from the rubbles.

Not to mention our all star cast of new recruits…

Manny...Happy New Year from all of us at Canespace!

GO CANES IN 2008!!!

Hey Manny's a Fraud, why don't you learn basic phonics before you make any negative comments about people. Maybe you didn't make it past elementary but when you use an apostrophe on a proper name it makes it possessive. So it's not like "it's" where what you're saying is "it is", what you're saying is that Manny owns a fraud or is in possession of one. I know I'm knit picking but when you're putting down one of my boys, don't open yourself up to the opportunity for an easy comeback. Well besides the fact that you're a dumbass. Everyone knows that what PJ is saying is BS. The Canes have been showing him love since he was 15. They didn't stop all of a sudden now. Maybe the "love" he's talking about is another way of saying showing the money like Cuba Gooding Jr. in Jerry Maguire. I don't care how good this kid is no one is above the team which this kid apparently thinks he is. I'm really not disappointed at all that he's not coming, I want Brandon Harris. Him and Patchan are the two biggest needs right now ad I hope we get both. If TJ comes that would just be icing on the cake.

Manny:

Do you know anything about Nicholas Perry, DE from Michigan? According to Scout.com, Miami's his top school.

Happy new year, and go Canes!

well folks new year, no more bs year. thankfully were past the PJ CRAP. NOW WE FOCUS ON BH. we all agree pj is a stud. however so is bh, i think randy needs 2 takeover the D. WE NEED him coaching da d so nix can do his thang on the offense.we have stud running backs wr now we need a TE.marve must produce, 1 key fact is the kids must stop playing scared RS has the kids terrified 2 make a small mistake

There is no better way to start out the new year than watching the Gayturds lose.

So what have we learned the last few days

1 PJ is a fraud
2 FSU still stinks
3 USF still stinks
4 The Florida Gators stink
5 App. State is better than Florida
6 Glad we didn't get Mike Leach
7 The Florida Gators and the SEC is OVER-RATED
8 ITS ALL ABOUT THE U
9 Tebow can't pass the ball over 7 YDS.
10 We can't wait till SEPT. 6

Great job Manny,... It feels funny being different, Hmmmm , I just got all this love for the canes. It is taken more time but I'll get use to it... Go Canes!!!

CANES!!

UM FANS ARE RETARDS... GO Canes!!!

Posted by: UM FANS ARE RETARDS | January 01, 2008 at 11:16 AM

LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
U MIAMI FANS ARE RETARDS BUT DAMN SURE ARE COMEDIANS

Myer and Tebow on ESPN news whining like a couple of B!tches. Tewbow looks like he is going to cry. WHAAAA WHAAAA There were some bad calls WHAAAAA. Great team you got there Florida. Yall will be great when yall realize that the other players with Florida uniforms on are there to help you, not just Teblow and Harvin....Teblow....ha ha ha

I just checked to Florida blog and there is hardly anyone posting. I see why you Gator fans who can read a little and write even less come over here to post.

Watching the Gators lose brings smiles too all Canes fans!

You look like Bill Parcells.

Like I suspected.
Urban crier blamed coaching. He had demoted Strong to assistant DC, this way he blames Strong for losses and takes credit for wins.

See strong either fired or resigning pretty soon.

Did people finally realize that Tim Tebow can't throw the ball and he is a product of that offense? He is Alex Smith Part II but Smith is better.

I dont like how you guys are treating my son. He is just having fun with recruiting. Just to let you guys know that he'll be a cane on Saturday.

RS would not compromise the integrity of himself or the program in any way , this is what builds the character of our young men today . RS has been there and done that, his defenses were an extention of him .It is not the facilities , it is the work ethic , patience and the character that RS instills that puts so many players from THE U in the NFL . Has anyone thought of contacting Tony Fitzpatrick as a DC , he was DL coach at the U of Houston for a while . He'd love to be back at THE U .

Did anyone see the Gators receiver (Ingram, I think), flash a U during a touchdown?
The touchdown was called back on a penalty, but he appeared to flash a U.

Dude, my brother and I saw the same thing. It was so weird. We were trying to figure out what it could have been but it really did look like a U. He must have been trying to do something else because who would do that?

I've seen a few teams flash the U today. I think somebody flashed it in the USC-UI game. Does that have another meaning---I can't imagine these guys are really flashing the U...maybe taunting us?

when they do it fast it looks like the U put there throwing up a diamond which means dynasty they got from rapper JZ. The first one i see do that was Willis M. on our second title run before we got robbed by Ohio State

Yeah, I know...this wasn't the same thing.

Yeah, I know...this wasn't the same thing.

I thought I saw the UF receiver throw up the U sign also. I hate the Gators but I am a Tebow fan. Regardless of the system he is in the kid has heart and does not back down from anyone. I rooted like hell for Michigan yesterday!

I rooted for Michigan too.......LOL...anytime UF looses I am happy.....

I rooted for U of Michigan like a mofo yesterday too, but I wanted to ask Manny that if you read this please ask coach Shannon how come we did not go after English?
The DC from Michigan that just sign to be the DC at Louisville, I think he would have been a great fit for the U.

i think that kid did throw up the U .... i was confused when i saw that lol. great game by Michigan and UF... tebow for what its worth did play tough and hard to hate on the guy after the story of him giving up his spring break to go to the phillipinee's to help his parents orphanage... but... love seeing the guy get a beating by michigan was priceless seing him get droped

robert, are you serious? tebow cant throw the ball? he stands in the pocket and throws like a man. he can make almost any thrown in a game. tebow wasnt the prob yesterday. urban and his staff never game him a chance. mich was blitzing all day long, and urban never adjusted to give him any backfield help. he had less than 2 seconds to throw the ball on many occasions today... no qb would have thrived under those circumstances. the gators coaching staff choked by not making any adjustments on offense or defense... they lost the game!

Wow...I'm glad you're not in charge of any player evaluation.

I never said Tebow was the problem. He's just not a good QB. He is a great COLLEGE QB in that particular system. But he is a product of that system, just like Alex Smith was. Alex Smith sucks and Tebow is not even as good as he is because Smith has a stronger arm.

i aint goin to knock on tebow, w/o him & harvey the gator's get trampled on.. but i think he will be a better college qb than NFL qb.. its not a bad thing just there... i mean look at what happen you put pressure ( like michigan did), take away his running ability (ala michigan)... and take away harvey ( not like michigan).. and the gators did nothing

im not saying he will be a great pro... but he is a great college qb..period!

but its not like he had time to do anything and couldnt get it done... the coaching staff has to put him in postion to make plays.... montana couldnt have done anything with the pressure he got yesterday, and his coaches hung him out to dry... surely you cant deny that?

He is a great college QB and he did face alot of pressure yesterday. I'm just saying that he puts up the numbers that he does because of the system that he is in. If you force him to be a QB and actually throw the ball, he's not good. His footwork and throwing motion are terrible.

WHO CARES ABOUT TEBOW, HARVIN, OSCAR MEYER-- OR WHOEVER???

WE SHOULD BE UNCONCERNED ABOUT WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY DO-- STAY FOCUSED ON OUR TEAM, OUR FOLKS OUR MISSION.

FORTSON, HARRIS, BROWN,JOHNSON-- WHO'S GOING TO BE OUR DC? WHAT ARE THINGS GOING TO BE LIKE AT DOLPHINS STADIUM NEXT YEAR? HOW DO WE REBUILD THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND FINANCES OF THIS PROGRAM-- WHAT'S YOUR TAKE ON THE TIMELINE TILL CHANPIONSHIPS-- SCREW THE GATORS AND ALL THE OTHER TEAMS-- ITS ALL ABOUT THE "U". WANT TO TALK ABOUT OTHER TEAMS AND SPECULATE AND PONTIFICATE ABOUT OTHER TEAM'S PLAYERS? GO CREATE YOUR OWN BLOG SITE. THIS IS CANES COUNTRY BABY.

ronnie i agree forget the gators... btw my opinion on the Move to DS... it might be a "recruiting tool" but i think it was a horrible move.. the OB was in bad shape but i would have rathered them fix her up. than move... DS wont shake and rattle like the OB did.

UGA dominated Hawaii.. There defense tore Colt Brennan a new one. The defense coordinated was born and raised in coral gables, fl.. He went to the MIAMI.. He has only been the UGA defense coordinator for 2 years and they have played great. Willie Martiniaz is the perfect fit at defense coordinator, and why wouldn't he want to play for the alma mater.

True but what is the only thing better than a Canes win? A Gator loss!

Shannon stopped talking to PJ months ago. Last guy he did this to was Bowe, who was also paid by LSU. PJ has been sold to the highest bidder, FSU or LSU.

cannie,

there's no way martinez comes this way. if he does he'll have to probably take less pay while leaving a consensus contender for the sec/national title next year. unless we have a boatload of money stored up from some rich alums it probably won't happen. shannon is fighting an uphill battle with limited financial resources, which is why we need to support him, give him and his staff space to grow into this opportunity. he's are guy, and he, the team, and the program will need every ounce of support and goodwill we can send his way. as a matter of fact i'm going to write a check today.

caneinatl-- out

Guys I've been a Canes fan ever since I started watching football and I know I'm supposed to hate the Gators. However, I just don't understand why...we've played them 4 times in the last 20 years and the last time we lost to them I was 1 year old in 1985. This hardly sounds like a rivalry to me? Why is there so much hate for UF out there? I'd expect more FSU bashing since we play them every year and lose far more frequently than we do to UF. Whats the deal???

Besides I cheer for every Florida team to win---just not when they play Miami. It would speak volumes of the talent in Florida if you had UM, FSU, and UF in the top 10 and teams like USF and UCF flirting with the top 25. Besides it only makes UM better if they are the only team to defeat FSU or UF...think about it.

PS: Anybody hating on Tebow is simply jealous. When is the last time a UM quarterback was responsible for 55 TDs in a season? I don't think UM has ever done that...Kyle Wright only managed 42 TDs his entire career.

go easy on the gators, you sound like a cameltoe. You obviously do not know about the history between Miami and UF. Study up Junior, then you'll understand!

Ref Ronnie G on the Gator-haters. The UM-UF rivalry goes way-way back. My first college football game ever was what we used to call the Baby Canes vs the Baby Gators in the Orange Bowl. It was a JV or freshman type game. That was in the early sixties. I was probably 7 or 8 yrs old. I don't know when they stopped doing that. UF was the dominant power in FL during the 60s and 70s (bar none). Then came the early 80s and Miami's rise to prominence along w/ FSU to a lesser extent. We were still playing UF until the schools cancelled the annual rivalry after the Canes were pelted w/ oranges at a game in Gainesville. Charlie Pell was the Gator coach I believe. That game up in Gainesville was the beginning of the end of the old rivalry. BLUF: as long as I can remember growing up in Miami....we never cared much for UF. They were better than us for so many years; that's probably what caused it. That said, I usually pull for the Gators now when they're not playing the U. I especially miss Steve Spurrier and his antics. My account of UM-UF history is probably not exact, but it's close enough for govt work. If you want to know more you could email Mr. Pope (Herald Sports Editor). I was reading his stories about the Canes when I was a kid growing up. He knows the U.

go easy...

you are dead on your tebow assessment. so many people are on talk smack about him, when the bottom line he is a great college QB. he can throw nd run... and do both exceptionally well. im not gator lover, but i tolerate them (even though i cant stand meyer), but tebow is a stud. fsu and bowden is who i hate

sorry about the typos... guess i should proof read

Anyone with a scout account please check the news on LB Marcus Robinson. They are saying he is headed to the U.

1971 "The Gator Flop." Florida's defensive players, who later said they were upset that Miami literally fell down to enable the Hurricanes to score a late TD. That gave Florida's John Reaves enough time to become the NCAA's leading career passer at the time as the Gators rolled 45-16. Some Florida players cavorted in the stadium's end-zone dolphin tank after the game.

This was the game that forever changed UM-UF attitudes toward each other, permamently. If you see the footage, all 11 players literally fall to the ground so their QB could get the passing record. Totally classless.

Hey Go easy-- 2 words sum up the hate for the gaytors GATOR FLOP.

mo canes,

the "gator hater" i believe you are referring to is "go easy on the gators" not me-- "ronnie g"-- i don't necessarily dislike the gators-- i pull for all of the florida teams-- unless they're playing the "U".

the history between the two programs and the rivalry notwithstanding, i still think we spend too much time talking about tebow and meyer. champions, even budding ones, aren't fixated on their foes and opponents-- they stay focused and tuned on their own game-- see the canes of the 80's and 90's (and their fans)-- check today's new england patriots.
