And for the last question... to my knowledge no, Walton's firing has not affected any recruits. Then again, I haven't spoken to all of them. Ultimately, we'll find out in the next couple of days if it does. But from my conversations with the guys at The West in the last couple days, I'd say NO. They are Shannon's Boys not Walton's boys.

you know i really dont like manny anymore... have you been drinking?? patchans family wanting him to go to UF... word on the street the brown and patchan going to the same school together... Posted by: loucane | December 18, 2007 at 10:46 PM

A: So, let me get this straight. Loucane doesn't like me anymore because I said I've heard Patchan's family would like him to go to Florida?

How can Patchan's family be pushing Florida??!? Didn't his dad play for Miami? Wasn't Randy Shannon a teammate of his dad's? Posted by: Eddie | December 18, 2007 at 10:39 PM

Did I read that right, Manny? Patchan could be pushed to UF by his family? Posted by: croociac | December 18, 2007 at 10:39 PM

A: Yes. I know what I said ruffled some feathers. But listen to me. I spoke to folks at UM who believe the kid wants to come to Miami, but his parents -- who are being parents in this situation -- would likely prefer for him to go to Florida. I know Matt's dad played for UM. I know it doesn't make sense. But from what I heard over the weekend from those recruiting folks and from conversations with people at UM, this is what they're hearing. Like it or not, I'm just reporting what I've heard.

what kind of U family are they if they would push their son to go to UFag???? that's insane.

Q: 1. DO you think we are really putting too much pressure on this years incoming recruiting class? Or do you think they can help achieve an 8+ win season?
A: I think a lot of pressure is being put on the young players to produce next season. Can they produce? We'll see. Tim Tebow and Percy Harvin sure looked special at Florida this past season in their sophomore seasons. I'm sure a few of these young guys can contribute.

Manny,

Patchan's Dad might as well turn in his NC ring if he feels Florida is better than Miami. Doesn't make any sense.

Manny,

I think we are doing well in recruiting. I just hope we will do well next year because i don't think we can stand another losing season. These fans are spoiled including myself. I don't want to swallow my pride and come to grips that All hope is gone.

So my question Manny is who do U think will emerge next year among the freshmen and where will our defense rank even without a DC at this point.

2. Any news on recruits' reaction to Walton being ousted (other than the one you posted about Forston in your initial article)?
A: I spoke to a few other Northwestern guys and from what I heard, they liked Walton a lot. But he's not the reason they picked UM.

3. Do you think Browns committment will help sway other recruits TO or FROM UM?
A: Yes. I think this could play a role in convincing some guys to pick UM. But I don't think that it should make you believe that will work with everyone -- especially guys like Patchan, Brandon Harris or even Patrick Jonson.

Manny don't listen to anyone that's upset by your reports. Sometimes the truth/rumors isn't what we want to hear. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Q: Manny, Patchan's Dad might as well turn in his NC ring if he feels Florida is better than Miami. Doesn't make any sense. Posted by: Eddie | December 18, 2007 at 10:57 PM

A: You got to remember something Eddie. Matt Patchan Sr. is trying to make the best decision for his son. If he and his wife feel Florida is a better school for their son, somebody has convinced them. My money is Urban Meyer is a hell of a salesman. Don't forget either how this team went 5-7 last season.

Manny, how about Will Muschamp (auburn dc) for new dc? Word in North Florida is C.J. Holton is very very soft on FSU, i think we need him how about you?

What's the deal with Tenn LB Gavin Hardin and Julio Jones? Word is they are both interested in the Canes. Any hope?

Florida lost 3 games this season. They didn't even win their division. Miami will win a NC before the Gators win another one.

4. Who do you think would be a good candidate for the new DC?
I honestly don't know. I don't want to throw my two cents out there until I hear some feedback on whom the candidates really are.

5. Who is on the list for enrolling in the Spring?
The same guys Ive been telling you about for awhile -- Spence, Forston, Jacory Harris, Aldarius Johnson. Futch. Calhoun. Maybe Patrick Johnson and Matt Patchan.

6. Any news on Patchan, Johnson, or Harris?
Nothing more than I've already mentioned.

Hey Manny,

What recruits do you think are going to round out this class (that have not verbally committed yet)? Do you think we might pick up any FSU recruits (Jenkins?) thanks to the scandal up there?

Thanks for taking the time to do this. I've never posted a ? but I check in several times a day to look for your blog updates.

Q: Wassup Manny, I believe that Randy Shannon had to let Tim Walton go because it seems as if the defense under him just seemed out of sync alot of times. I really didn't see any cohesiveness in that defense under him. I just believe that all of this year the OC's that we faced were just lickin there chops to call plays against Tim Walton because they knew he couldn't adjust. I know the timing was a little awkard, but I agree with it, do you? Posted by: lilcane | December 18, 2007 at 08:49 PM

A: As far as the firing of Walton, I just think he wasn't qualified for it. I think Randy gave him an opportunity hoping for the best and then realized he couldn't get the job done. Walton is probably just a very good position coach -- nothing wrong with that. As far as the timing. When is it a good time to fire a coach? To me, as quickly as possible so you can find a replacement. I think that's the way Shannon treated it. I don't understand how waiting until February would make a difference. He did it now so the program could move forward. End of story.

Manny,

Meyer might be a good salesman, but is Shannon chop-liver? Patchan senior played with Shannon. He should know Shannon. If that's not good enough, PLUS he's Miami blood... then something is wrong with Patchan senior.

I'm not sure where the reports are coming from that my parents want me to go to Florida came from but I can assure you all that that's not the case. You all find out how I really fell tomorrow at 4pm

Q: What is the latest on the early enrollees? If no update, when will we know? Any update on Brown's family moving to Miami, and if so, where does his brother play in miami? thanks for your hard work. Posted by: West Coast Ibis | December 18, 2007 at 08:52 PM

A: Hey West Coast Ibis. Answered the early enrollee question earlier. Canesport had a nice article up on Brown yesteday basically saying his parents may not move to Miami after all so it might be a moot point.

A: Cute.

A: Look, I'm not ripping Shannon as a recruiter. I'm just relaying what I heard. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the people I spoke to have no clue. I'm just telling you I heard it from several people. If Matt Patchan wants to go to Miami, we'll find out soon enough. I hope he does. The Hurricanes need him more than Florida does.

I think all this talk about "THE" Matt Patchan might be a moot point this time tomorrow. Could just be a hunch though. Don't wanna be CUTE or anything:)

Q: 7. Is Calais Campbell announcing anytime soon if he's going pro? 8. Who is Patrick Hill? I found nothing on Scout and Rivals. Any other under the radar players you know about? Posted by: BrandonB84 | December 18, 2007 at 08:52 PM

A: I'm not sure what the deal with Calais is. To my knowledge and from my sources (my sources felt better about UM landing Arthur Brown than they do Patchan), he's supposed to be going pro. He wants to take care of his family. But who knows why he is taking so long. Maybe he'll change his mind. As far as Hill is concerned, he's the fullback of the future of this program and a teammate of Kayne Farquharson at the JUCO level. I'll try to find out more on him.

MPatch -- Hope so. I'm sure like everyone else on this board its safe to say they want Matt Patchan to be a Cane.

Keep up the good work. I like that you keep people updated even if they don't live in the area. I'm out.

Q: Do you have any sense of how Shannon felt about the offense this past year specifically Nix's play-calling? How much input does Shannon really have? Some of the play-calling especially in the red zone was very questionable this year and i think everyone is concerned about the lack of tight end and fullback use. I know it seems we are recruiting these skill position players but will we really use them? Posted by: C$ | December 18, 2007 at 08:58 PM

A: I asked Randy point blank how much he had to with the playcalling. His response: "None at all." As far as how he felt about play-calling, he seemed happy. His frustration came from having a lack of playmakers. There's no doubt though UM has to do a better job in the red zone. Epps is a guy they are counting on to grow into their go-to tight end next season. As Hill is a guy they are very excited about as far as a blocking fullback near the goalline.

Are the canes looking at any other OL to come in with this class?

Q: Manny what's up with the Walton situation? Posted by: 86Cane | December 18, 2007 at 09:10 PM

A: Hey 86. From what I heard it all came down to his inability to make adjustments. Shannon wasn't happy with how the defense fell apart down the stretch of the season and wants somebody who keep the defense at the level he had it.

So Manny, where do we go to find out MPatch's decision tomorrow at 4EST?

Q: Manny, What is it going to take to get fans to support the basketball team? Posted by: Hawaii Cane | December 18, 2007 at 09:14 PM

A: It's going to take time and tradition. You don't just develop a fan base without some history -- especially here in South Florida. UM was building it at the end of Leonard Hamilton's tenure. I think once this team starts to win regularly and goes to the postseason regularly like it once was, the fans will come out. But they honestly shouldn't wait for that logn. This team is good and fun to watch.

It's a good father that thinks in his heart he's doing what's best for his boy.

It's a sad father that thinks his boy must do whats best for his dad.

Q: What are the chances of Miami landing Brandon Harris, Matt Patchan, Tommy Streeter and do you think Miami will hire from within or outside the program for a DC? Posted by: Joe | December 18, 2007 at 09:19 PM

A: I think Brandon Harris is about 75 percent. Patchan is 50/50. Streeter is 50/50. As for the DC, I think UM goes outside.

Manny,

Any news on the transfer front?

What seniors on the team do you think have a chance to be drafted? i.e. Wright or leggett?

Posted by: HuffyTheKidd | December 18, 2007 at 09:29 PM
Q: Which of the 26 commits do you feel are the most likely to go elsewhere?
A: Patrick Johnson and maybe Ramon Buchanon.

Q. What is your personal "OPINION" about whether or not Calais will go pro?
A: I think he will go pro. But the fact it has taken this long to announce makes me wonder if he is reconsidering.

Q: Have you kicked the bug you caught in Orlando yet?
A: Yes. OJ and good rest will do it for you.

Q: Manny, Even though Darrell Scott has the U listed as a school he's interested in, are we putting any effort in trying to get him seeing how RB isn't really a high priority for us next year? Posted by: HuffyTheKidd | December 18, 2007 at 09:34 PM

A: The running back I believe UM has its best chance of landing is the kid from Jacksonville Trinity Christian. UM coaches believe its a battle between them, Clemson and Florida.

OK guys... I know I didn't get to all the questions. But I'm calling it a night. I'll answer the rest of these tomorrow. Feel free to leave any questions on topics I didn't cover. Thanks for the Q&A session. It was fun.

wow thats a stab in the heart of patchan goes to the gators... if your dads want you to go to the gators... tell him to go to hell and be a man and make your own decisions... in four years from now are your parents going to be telling you what to do... you make the decisions not them... remembers its your life...

Jamie Harper is his name, and hes a beast.

Manny

Nice work - appreciate the updates out here in the west

Any chance spence moves to safety, I saw him a couple games this year and it seems like with all the linebackers we have coming in and with him being a bit undersized that he'd be a natural fit at safety. Also why didn't Allen Bailey play more this year he was a beast in high school I figured we'd have him at MLB.

Can you give us more insight on the Walton firing, who's rumored to be a likely replacement, and is Nix going to stick with his spread offense or will he use more of the old playbook (pro style) this upcoming year? I don't like the fact UM didn't use the TE's like they could have; the TE's are a staple at da U.

Gotta believe in Randy.

Recruits, just know that RS will do the best to not just Recruit you, but also to Develop you into the First Rounders he was able to help create as D Coord. Trust that Shannon knows what it takes to maximize ability and the proof is in the starting lineups on Sunday.

If Walton was not the guy to lead, Randy will find that guy for you and you could make no better decision than to come to the U and help lead the Resurrection!

Looking forward to 2008!

manny,

i have trouble buying this "adjustments" argument re: tim walton. if shannon was "unhappy" w/ walton's "adjustments" why didn't shannon, a former d coordinator/asst. coach of the year etc., relay his in-game thoughts on strategy/players up to walton during the games? or is shannon basically putting the defense solely in the hands of the coordinator? if then, based on what you reported he said about his involvement w/ nix's play calling, does shannon do during the game? i really really want to believe in randy but i can't shake the feeling that things are a little chaotic around there.

Manny: No way matt patchan goes to Uf not after he shows balls, guts and love and emotion in calling out the team's poor play. :e beleives there is a problem, and - believe with his balls and guts he is going to be at the U in ;anuary with 6orston, Brown, and the other cats to right the ship. Otherwise his shoutouut becomes foolish, senseless, and he ends up a coward and a wolf in sheep,s skin.

herald's barry jackson: "Recruiting guru Tom Lemming said ... elite cornerback Patrick Johnson told him on TV Tuesday he ... definitely will come to UM."

We've got a kicker (thank God).... Also, Arthur Brown is supposed to enroll in January.

Canesjunkie: we landed a kicker & Arthur Brown ... OMG

Patchan is supposed to announce this week. From what I heard last week while I was out in Orlando chatting up with recruiting gurus like Mike Bakas and Newberg from Scout.com, they believe he'll end up with Florida. I know the feeling at Canes headquarters is they think Patchan loves Miami, but could be pushed to go to Florida by his family. It will be interesting to see who wins out. I think he's going to Florida.

how come Bakas said he never talked to you?
